The Raikar Case  - Review
The Raikar Case web series review: A heady concoction of scandal, shock and suspicion in this teasing whodunit
The youngest member of an extremely wealthy and influential business family, coveting political ambitions, has allegedly committed suicide, but the police investigation reveals it to be a murder case, which opens a can of worms and exposes several skeletons in the closet of each family member, with no one being able to be ruled out as a suspect
It's refreshing to see the new web series, The Raikar Case (I was fortunate to watch it in its entirety before the official release), traverse this path, and stimulating to experience how well it pulls it off given how difficult it is to keep an audience engaged around a whodunit premise due to how easy it is for attention to waver as the creators attempt to confuse us without making us feel silly.
The youngest member of an extremely wealthy and influential business family, coveting political ambitions, has allegedly committed suicide, but the police investigation reveals it to be a murder case, which opens a can of worms and exposes several skeletons in the closet of each family member, with no one being able to be ruled out as a suspect.
What's hot
The writing (a collaborative screenplay by Karmanya Ahuja, Bijesh Jayarajan, Chinmay Mandlekar and Anitha Nair) is what makes The Raikar Case what it is — an absorbing, intriguing tapestry of layers, twists, turns, scandals, suspicions, and shocks galore. Aditya Sarpotdar also does a fine job as the director for most parts (no surprises there, considering he has helmed one of Marathi cinema's finest thrillers, Faster Fene), and though his grip on the narrative slips at times, the script is so good that you're willing to forgive his few discrepancies. Of course, a good script gets wasted if you don't have the right actors to perform them, and on that note, everyone from veterans like Atul Kulkarni and Ashwini Bhave to accomplished stage and screen actors like Neil Bhoopalam, Kunal Karan Kapoor and Lalit Prabhakar have aced their roles. The editing, too, is right on the money, keeping the proceedings crisp and snappy and luring you into the next episode till you end up binge-watching the entire show. It's also a welcome throwback to see each episodes end on a cliffhanger after ages.
What's Not
While all the cast members are busy doing a fine job, Parul Gulati proves to be a major thorn in their side with a severely subpar performance. It further doesn't help that she's cast in a central role, demanding finesse, depth and complexity. Also, when I had earlier mentioned about Sarpotdar's grip slipping in portions, it had to with how he tries to conveniently insert certain twists or contrive some plot points, which just about stands in the way of The Raiker Case from being a brilliant thriller. Manoj Soni's camerawork also leave a lot to be desired, with some shots of a picturesque location like Goa looking straight out of a beginner's guide to photoshop. Aditya-Nayantara's sound mixing is another sore point, with the dialogues not gelling smoothly with the background music in several places.
BL Verdict
Some technical and creative hiccups notwithstanding, The Raikar Case is still a tense, unpredictable and highly effective murder mystery that'll leave you on the edge of your seat with excitement, make you keep guessing and force you to binge-watch it at a go. Don't forget to catch it when it premieres on the newly launched OTT platform, VOOT Select (the same streaming service that brought you the masterpiece, Asur, a couple of weeks ago), on 9th April.

The Raikar Case review: A gripping story of a dysfunctional family
The series keeps you glued to your seat throughout. Each episode has a twist to make it even more interesting.
Even though the begins to slow down a little mid-way, it picks up the pace before you get bored.
The background music helps in crafting the suspense very well and is appropriate for the scenes. It invokes much curiosity in the audience.
Talking about the performances, all the actors have aced the characters of the Naik Raikar family extremely well.
Overall, this series is a must watch and is the perfect pick during the lockdown.
Is it a suicide or a murder? Or is the situation completely different? To know, watch The Raikar Case, which will stream from 9th April.

Digital Review: ‘The Raikar Case’
With online streaming having become the main source of viewing entertainment of late, it seems film and TV makers are using every opportunity they can to make interesting and gripping stories without the worry of constant restrictions. One of the newest Indian web-series about to grace the online streaming world is Aditya Sarpotdar’s ‘The Raikar Case’ which is set to begin streaming on Voot Select on 9th April. With its first season consisting of seven episodes, the story revolves around family, politics, money and crime; where every episode gives its viewer more to be hooked on to as it goes on. The initial trailer has looked promising, however, with many series dramas of this kind, one may wonder if this will be just another thriller story where audiences will be able to predict what will happen and how it happened, or will Sarpotdar give his audience something to look forward to at the end of every episode and at the end of the season?
Standing at the edge of a cliff, Tarun Naik Raikar (Honey Kamboj) is distressed, and very distraught at cousin Etasha (Parul Gulati) who has failed to pick up his calls. As she pleads with him to step away from the cliff and come towards her to safety, Tarun keeps inching towards the edge, until he turns around and falls to his death. With this being the third death in the family in four years since Tarun’s father and sister passed away, the Naik Raikar family are doing all they can to hold it together. However, their whole situation is made worse by the arrival of SP John Pereira (Neil Bhoopalam) who pronounces Tarun’s death as a murder rather than a suicide, and the suspect is a member of the family. As the series unfolds, each episode reveals more about the family than anyone could anticipate.
An ensemble star cast is always rather tricky to get right, where each performer is as good as their co-star. However, Sarpotdar has done a brilliant job in selecting actors who are extremely good at their craft. Atul Kulkarni’s reputation for being a good watch is only enhanced with his role as the head of the family. Playing up to each element of his character perfectly, Kulkarni doesn’t disappoint his viewers in any way. Playing his wife Sakshi, Ashvini Bave is also another wonder to watch. In her role as the protector of her husband’s family, she is fierce and is able to express her character’s power in the most interesting way. The same can also be said about Bhoopalam, who has the audience on his side from the beginning. As he discovers more and more about the family, the viewer feels a part of his team in trying to find out the truth. Kamboj is someone who one becomes more interested as the story unfolds. He adapts his acting style to each situation and he is very convincing as a boy who had a lot to deal with, where story reveals that he is the key to more information than just his own death. Gulati is placed as the innocent daughter, whose faith in her own family seems to be shattering. She almost plays her character as though she is a part of the audience which works wonderfully in moving the story along. Other brilliant performances also come from Lalit Prabhakar, Kunal Karan Kapoor, Prakash Ramchandni and Vaishnavi Kadam who all display their characters as the ones to be wary of. Throughout the series, they never fail to leave the audience’s minds, even when not being on screen. The shudder and adrenaline that comes from watching a shaded character are piercing in each of their performances, making this series all the more exciting to watch.
If there is a series that will keep you at the edge of your seats, this is the one to watch. With a stellar star cast in tow, Sarpotdar has done an excellent job in making a gripping and captivating story. Using simple cliff-hangers and dedicating each episode to a different character works very successfully for the plot unravel. With each episode ending on a cliffhanger, Sarpotdar ensures his audience will definitely be clicking to watch the next episode straight after. By directing this series in a simple way, he has let his actors be the true storytellers. It’s fast-paced and he has kept the episodes short which makes it all the more easier to engage with, where one will be all the more eager to want a second season to soon follow.
‘The Raikar Case’ is not a light-hearted series, and does deserve the attention and interest of someone who wants to watch a brilliant story. Some may find parts of the series slightly predictable and there will be many who look for complicated and twisted dramas who could find this too quick. However being its first season, it is definitely worth a watch and is perfect for a binge-watch. The performances are outstanding and each episode has plenty of nail-biting moments, which are the perfect combination for an exciting series.

The Raikar Case is an edge-of-the-seat thriller about family, love, deceit, and their hidden secrets. The triage - Direction, Writing and Editing is what makes The Raikar Case what it is. This nail-biting thriller is supported by powerful performances from @atulkulkarni_official (plays the patriarch Yashwant Raikar), @neilbhoopalam (S.P. John Periera), @kunalkarankapoor (Mohit Naik Raikar / Son of Yashwant Raikar) and @ashvinibhave (the best written role & performance). Background music is apt and add depth to the thrills. What's not hot is the mediocre cinematography from Mano j Soni. Leaving few technical glitches, this who-done-it mystery is still a roller coaster ride that will leave you on the edge of your seat with excitements and surprises. An intriguing thriller and master stroke from @vootselect after Asur. Must BINGE Watch this lockdown. @wisemoviereview Ratings: 3.5/5.0

The Raikar Case Review: Ashwini Bhave Blows Your Mind In What Is One Of The Best Whodunit Murder Mystery In The Indian Cinema Space.
So, the day before yesterday, I happened to watch the VOOT original web series titled 'The Raikar Case'. It is a whodunit murder mystery that is so well crafted that I am at a complete loss of words to describe its brilliance. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to state that the web series is so intriguing and edge-of-the-seat that it should have been made for the big screen or the television. Yes, we are sick to the stomach with the kind of shows they telecast on TV and it is high time things change and change for the better. Coming to the series, well, there is a murder in the towering Raikar family of Goa. The well-reputed family starts to fall apart as the case unfurls and dirty secrets begin to unravel. Every family member has a secret absolutely unbeknownst to the other and yet they stay together, eat together and cull out huge functions together albeit with a pretentious smile stuck on to their faces! When Tarun Raikar commits suicide which eventually is found out to be a murder, the whole family comes under the radar of the Goa police, as the investigations proceed, we are made aware of the surreptitious pages of each and every member of the family that has been so long kept in the dark. Tucked away from the prying eyes of the media and their own kith and kin.And therefore, when their individual filth pops its head out, it sticks out like a sore thumb and how.Mind you, the web series has nothing to do with the Raikar Murder case (which also happened in Goa) that came to the fore in 2013.The characterisations take the cake, Atul Kulkarni plays the patriarch Yashwant Raikar, Sakshi Naik Raikar, the matriarch of the family was executed wondrously by Ashwini Bhave (one of the best-written roles in the series), Parul Gulati plays Itasha Naik, the daughter of Yashwant and Sakshi Raikar, Neil Bhoopalam plays S.P. John Pereira, Kunal Karan Kapoor plays Mohit Naik Raikar, the son of Yashwant and Sakshi, Reena Wadhwa plays the role of Tarun’s mother. The writers Bijesh Jayarajan and Anaitha Nair have nailed every character, with intricate detailing of the way they work, their background and their thought processes. It is so well-written that it came through in the performances and the dialogues too did full justice to it all.The series has been directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, his direction is well-nuanced and restrained and it never goes over the top. He makes every character so plausible and the arc of every character is so well rounded in the short span of one episode that it is indeed commendable. Everything has been taken care off, be it the question mark in the mind of the viewers at the end of every episode or the impending probability of everyone turning out to be the murderer, (again, the writing has to be mentioned over here), the nail-biting edit and a background score that is perhaps one of the best I have experienced in an OTT series. It is high time we as audiences realise, everything depends on the script and as much as the performers have to bring out their part in front of the lens, almost eighty per cent of the work has to done on papers and if that is in place, the film is already on the pathway to success. In this case, the script, screenplay and the treatment part is so robust that everything had to fall in place.Talking about the performances, Atul Kulkarni’s Yashwant is an otherwise dignified man who loves his daughter and trusts her more than his own son. He has his own faults which on coming out, leaves him ashamed and crestfallen, his false pride grovelling in the lowly dust and all in front of his family. After a long time, we see Atul doing what he does best. He plays the part with such adeptness that it becomes almost impossible to fathom someone else in his place. His character demands a hardened, no-nonsense exterior and a soft and fragile, prone to mistakes and temptations interior which seems to fit his persona. He has to always put up a show which portrays him righteous, powerful and commanding but within he is well-aware of the fallacies and the demons he willfully succumbs to. The - I am there from the outside and yet I am not there from the inside, makes his character so vulnerable, so vulnerable.
Neil Bhoopalam’s tough cop act of SP John Pereira is also done to the T. I can’t forget how he snubs an outwardly arrogant Yashwant in the police station when he asks him, “Tera Baap Kaun Hai Periera” He rams the phone on the table, looks him in the eye and thunders, “Anthony Pereira Mere Baap Ka Naam, Tere Baap Ka Naam To Poora Picholim Jaanta Hai…” or when Itasha comes to the police station and Pereira takes her for a “crash course” on her family, he walks up to Yashwant and roars at him, “Tumhari Beti Yaha Nahi Hoti To Tumhare Daant Tod Deta Main.” Well, John has evidently seen a lot of cases in his career and he is a hard nut to be cracked, he doesn’t give a damn about who he is dealing with, all he knows is to get to the crux of the case at hand!
Parul Gulati’s Itasha is also a swell job done, out of all the other sinister characters, hers is the only righteous one, who is trying to scrupulously find the truth. Her self-reproach when she finds out the truth about her family, the realisations when don on her, the expressions that she has, the look of surprise and utter shock at once to discover the gory and baleful goings-on in her family is done to the T.
One of the best written and the best-executed character is that of Sakshi Naik Raikar played with a conviction and a mastery like no other by Ashwini Bhave. She is TERRIFIC! She lets her eyes do the talking. We all know about the film in a film phenomenon and hers is an act in an act! It was just mind-blowing to watch her. She transforms from being the meek matriarch to being the lady who stands like a rock with her family no matter what to the venomous serpent who lurks underneath yet no one is aware of it. Ashwini just kills it. The Raikar case is her comeback and boy oh boy, whatta comeback! This show is a must-watch only for her!
All in all one of the best web series out there. The Raikar Case on VOOT is a MUST WATCH! It streams on VOOT from the 9th April, '20.

'The Raikar Case' review: Engaging family drama weighed down by a middling whodunit
The first episode of this 7-part series, currently streaming on Voot Select, plays out like the first episode of Modern Family.
The Raikar Case begins with a quandary — Has Tarun Zachary Naik Raikar, a teenager hanging out at the edge of a cliff, plummeted to his untimely death of his own volition or was it a murder?
A real cliffhanger, if I may. However, he takes time off from it to provide narration to the series, and begins by defining the word, Family — “Udne ke liye pankh, aur girne ke time support.”
(A family acts like your wings when you fly and is the support when you fall.)
It seems like a very nice thing to say about family, but it quickly turns dark when he adds, “My sweet but strange family is everything to me, even the reason for my death.” The quandary becomes rhetorical. Of course, it is murder!
The first episode of this 7-part series, currently streaming on Voot Select, plays out like the first episode of Modern Family.
Over the course of 30-odd minutes, one-by-one we are introduced to all the members of the Naik Raikar family, a rich and influential family based in Goa.
It isn’t easy to draw this family tree, and it takes further episodes for us to get acquainted with the exact familial bonding each of them shares with the other.
This not-so-modern family is headed by Yashwanth Naik Raikar (Atul Kulkarni) and his wife, Sakshi Naik Raikar (Ashwini Bhave).
There are the children Etasha (Parul Gulati) and Mohit (Kunal Karan Kapoor). There is Tarun’s mother, Lily D’Silva Naik Raikar (Neena Wadhwa), a widow who lost her husband (Yashwanth’s brother) and daughter in an accident.
There is also the extended family of Yashwanth’s sister, Anandi. Apart from the Naik Raiker family, there is also a powerful politician Rajshekar Rane and his hot-headed chauvinistic son, Eklayvya Rane. And over the course of the series, we see almost every one of them become suspects in the murder of Tarun. More importantly, we find out the tremendous variety of skeletons in each of their closets.
More than Modern Family, The Raikar Case is fashioned straight out of Broadchurch. You have a dead kid on the beach, a cop who gets too close to the case, and a never-ending list of suspects. An interesting narrative style is explored in The Raikar Case by beginning each episode with Tarun being struck down by a suspect and ending the episode with a new suspect being added to investigating officer SP John Pereira’s (Neil Bhoopalam) list. While this route might seem a bit tedious, it does work... mostly.
Writers Bijesh Jayarajan, Karmanya Ahuja, Anitha Nair incorporate various themes like infidelity, borderline incest, homosexuality, anger issues, power struggle, idealism, voyeurism, misogyny, and politics into The Raikar Case. Not all play out effectively, but most do. It creates enough confusion in the mind of Pereira, who initially seems like a most inept cop.
All his breakthroughs are incidental or aided by Etasha, who overcompensates her guilt for not picking Tarun’s calls on that fateful night by investigating the murder. But towards the end of the season, we get to know Pereira’s wily nature through a semblance of a twist buried under a series of even bigger twists. Such subtle touches are so very few and far in between that after a point, the reveals lose sting.
However, the series is kept engaging almost till the end by the impressive performances of the entire cast. In some ways, Yashwanth is similar to Atul’s very own Ameya Gaikwad from the political series, City of Dreams.
But certain nuances in Yashwanth and subtle undertones in Atul’s performance make it stand out as he watches his painfully-built family crumble in front of his very eyes.
Ashwini is brilliant as Sakshi, who undergoes a rollercoaster of emotions as she comes to terms with every secret, every catastrophe, and has a few skeletons of her own in the closet. The casting is on point, especially Lalit Prabhakar’s explosive Eklavya Rane and Kunal’s Mohit.
This is essentially a Karan Johar meets Sriram Raghavan whodunit that veers more towards the former’s sensibilities.
It would have made for a good feature film too. But despite the makers choosing the web-series format, the all-important character arcs of these family members feel underdeveloped. The incessant quest for cliffhangers in each episode results in an underwhelming hook to the second season that even dilutes the mother of all twists in The Raikar Case.
The Naik Raikars, which I first heard as Knight Riders (how cool would that have been), are morally corrupt and have enough skeletons still remaining in their closets to be brought out in the open. And as Tarun, who dropped from a cliff seven times in this seven-part series, taught us — The rich really are different.

However, it doesn't matter because you will continue to enjoy the thriller, thanks to a strong star cast including Atul Kulkarni, Neil Bhoopalam, Ashvini Bhave, Parul Gulati, Kunal Karan Kapoor and Lalit Prabhakar. In fact, Lalit and Ashvini's characters were one of the best written, until the last episode, where things are taken too far. I still wanted to see Ashvini's character continue on that path, but as for Lalit's Eklavya, it became hard to watch. On the other hand, Neil Bhoopalam's SP John Pereira is shown as a tough cop in the first episode but the focus is quickly moved to Parul Gulati's Itasha, who comes off genuine and perfectly clueless as her character has been left in the dark all along.

Director Aditya is pretty successful when it comes to exploring the fact that how easily family bond and love for one other can turn into deceit for the thirst of wealth and power. A lot of credit needs to go the writers Karmanya Ahuja, Bijesh Jayarajan, Chinmay Mandlekar, and Anita Nair. The writer and the director have truly blended well when it comes to understanding each other’s vision and the end product is a result of that. Although certain twists and turns make you feel a little prolonged and a bit of a forced attempt to create further confusion, overall it matches well with the subject as most importantly, it is able to captivate the audience’s mind and engagement throughout. Atul Kulkarni as Yeshvant Naik Raikar is simply magnificent and the layers that he brings into his character are laudable.
Parul Gulati and Kunal Karan Kapoor have always been fine actors and they have shown depth in their performances. Neil Bhoopalam deserves a special mention for playing a strong and level-headed cop character, which touches everyone’s hearts. The director makes a successful attempt in not letting the plot and the sub-plot slip amidst many twists and turns and that’s one of the winning factors for this show.
Overall, The Raikar Case is the perfect watch when it comes to understanding how cardinal sins of life can get the better of any bond and tear apart relationships into pieces. The cliffhanger ending at the end of each and every episode will make you swipe to the next. A good and intense watch for sure.
iwmbuzz 3,5 out of 5 stars.
The Raikar Case Review – A dysfunctional family with dark secrets merits a voyeuristic watch.
The Raikar Case Voot Select Web Series is a strongly scripted Family Drama Web Series on Voot Select. After Asur and Marzi, this is the third major Web Series on Voot Select and hence the anticipation was quite high.
The Raikar Case story revolves around a rather dysfunctional Christian Joint Family, with hypocrisy ruling the majority of the characters. Yashwant Nayak Raikar (Atul Kulkarni) is the Head of the Family which has a Kaju Factory Business in Goa. He aspires to gain entry into Politics and become an MP. Wealth amassed over years and heirs apparent galore. Greed, Jealousy and Corruption rule. Yashwant is a strictly practical patriarch, a corrupt businessman, who sees dynasty as a pack of cards.
Amidst such an environment, Tarun Zacharine Nayak Raikar, a 16-year-old son of the family is murdered and a police investigation is initiated. The Raikar Case Web Series unfolds a series of suspects and why they could have murdered the young lad, who had an entire life ahead of him.

Murder, Lies, Adultery, Deceit, voyeurism, jealousy, retribution and many such dark emotions rule the family roost in The Raikar Case Review. With each episode revealing the family secrets one after the other, the viewer voyeurism is certainly piqued. More importantly, the character of Etasha, Tarun’s cousin sister as the only person who seems to be perturbed by Tarun’s death is nicely edged out.
When a family keeps it’s honor publically, but is cryptic privately, the tension and drama are very well depicted in The Raikar Case. The hypocrisy, jealousy, and backbiting prevails and engulfs a sense of sadness for an otherwise thinking individual. To the voyeuristic viewer, The Raikar Case offers an unending Masala.
Characterisation
The complex characterization of the Web Series depicting the relationships that exist in the rich joint family makes it a treat to watch. The interplay of relationships in the backdrop of a young boy’s tragic death is commendable. The patriarch, his wife, the deceased brother of the patriarch, his wife, their children, the sister’s husband, the list of characters is endless and yet by the second episode, all seem familiar and dark in some or the other way.
Screenplay
The Screenplay of the Web Series is its Hero. Each episode details out at least one suspect and the reason why they could have potentially committed the murder. Tarun himself, a rather shady and depressed boy without a father and a crappy mother is worthy of viewer interest as well. The Director has nuanced the mystery build up very well, keeping in mind the viewer interest.
Dialogues
The dialogues of The Raikar Case Web Series evoke intrigue and suspicion and support the narrative of a murder mystery very well. Each family member is literally suspecting the other, guarding their own little secret.
Performances
Yashwant Nayak Raikar, essayed by Atul Kulkarni is a stern and practical family patriarch with big ambitions. Atul Kulkarni is subtle and brings out a matter of factly character, who treats his family like a pack of cards, which need to be played to achieve his ambitions. Sakshi ( Ashvini Bhave) deserves a special mention for her digital debut and the complex depiction of a mother trying to protect family reputation at any cost whatsoever.
All other characters like Mohit ( Kunal Karan Kapoor), the designated black sheep of the family, Etasha (Parul Gulati) the concerned and responsible kid, Investigating Officer SP John Pareira ( Neil Bhoopalam), the menacing Eklavya ( Lalit Prabhakar), the MP’s son, and many more such performances make this Web Series a delectable watch.
