if I had a nickel for every time I developed a special interest in a piece of media wherein the story hinges on free will and choices and nature vs nurture and good vs evil , using a nonhuman character that has a vague mysterious origin while also implied to be born for destruction but forgets their original purpose/identity through some kind of intervention and is discovered by somebody who decides to take them in and encourage them to make their own decisions or choose to be good over their original evil purpose.
And that character is sweet and gentle and loving and silly and carefree and still doesn’t know who they were supposed to be but loves who they are now. They’re new and naive and don’t quite understand the nature of the world,!until they witness the death of an innocent and are thus very forcibly thrust into the concepts of grief and loss and death. Fearing what death means as something they can potentially cause with their strength or as a result of their original purpose; what it means for them as a strange unknown creature, and as an inevitability for their mortal loved ones. They fear what it means to lose things.
and again they’re sweet and gentle and kind but they still have these sporadic unexplained moments of aggression and violence as a misunderstood defense mechanism that confuses and scares them and causes everyone, even their friends, to fear them and see them as a weapon despite the prior encouragements that they can be who they choose to be. They still try to be good and kind and gentle but In a moment of pure utter grief that they have not yet experienced before when they think their best friend is dead they lash out and become as violent and aggressive as they were born to be and become the weapon everybody feared them to be, .
But their friend is alive and still in this moment of seeing them at their absolute worst at having made the choice to destroy, a choice made from grief rather than malice, their friend still believes they are good and tells them they still have the choice and they don’t have to be This. They are who they choose to be. … and they aim to prove it by sacrificing themself rather explosively. Dying doing something good .for the sake of others, to prove they are not a weapon. .
