My Writing This Week

After eighty years - okay just under a month, I’ve finally broken through some writing block and anxiety and have published a little Joel introspective drabble for Your Hand in Mine today.

What I've Been Up To This Week

I finished two books this week: A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid and Girl Goddess Queen by Bea Fitzgerald. I loved both books but for me Girl Goddess Queen wins favourite of the week. It’s a retelling of the Persephone - Hades myth and was incredibly engaging, well written and had brilliant characterisation. I read it in one day and it’s a definite 5 star read for me.

I’ve been finishing a few horror movies after spooky season, but this week I continued to watch Lessons In Chemistry and I’ve decided to try a mubi 7 day trial so I can finally watch Strange Way of Life (and Aftersun which has been on my watchlist for ages)

I'm still playing and loving Baldur’s Gate 3. I’m on Act 3 in my original playthrough (half-elf bard romancing Astarion, obviously 😂) and I’ve just started a durge playthrough too. I’ve had so much fun playing this game so far. Thanks @perotovar for listening to all my BG3 thoughts and discussions so far and also I’m so excited @pastelnap has bought the game now too!

Anyone who reads the crime reports in the daily papers would be hard put to disagree with him.

Doctor Who #2

Just finished (nearly) Season 1. I forgot Ecclestone was only there for one season, it feels like longer when you watch the normal non-internet way of once weekly, as I did at the time. The plot twists in the newer seasons particularly feel extremely fast, but I think if it was viewed the traditional way (which streaming services actually punish - binge watching is seen as the only good metric) the build up and payoff is more rewarding. I skipped the second episode of the gas masks one because I remembered the ending (and the character(s) saying mummy 1000 times was getting annoying, though I appreciate the repeated sound being an effective and simple technique to create an ominous atmosphere which Doctor Who uses frequently), and skipped the third slavine one (I might return to it). I like Billie/Rose's temporary anime transformation into an all-seeing time being at the end, but I couldn't tell you what happened in the rest of that episode since I tune out when it gets too daleky (I swear they shoehorn cybermen and daleks into plotlines solely for copyright-refreshing reasons, like is anyone out there hooting and hollering when they see a dalek or cyberman?) Tennant looks like a fresh-faced 80s baby in his leather jacket here in his first episode, I remember I took a while to warm to him at the time, since he had played a bad guy in some tv show broadcast recently prior, but I like him now - he's very endearing and intense in the newest (plot wrapup/revival) three episodes.

My Writing This Week

I posted the first chapter of Let's Get Lost this week and I was a little nervous about it (thank you @undercoverpena for encouraging me to just press post when I got in my head) but I'm so pleased with the feedback so far and that people appear to be enjoying it!

Current state of the WIPs:

Your Hand In Mine - I am working on chapter 5 we'll only die of lonely secrets which is a bit of a change for the fic so ...

Let's Get Lost - working on chapter two

Secret Smile - remains on temporary hiatus but I hope to be writing for it again very soon.

Call it What You Want -rewrite in very early stages, some significant changes to the original fic including it's now an ofc but I'm excited about the opportunities with this

I Can See You In Your Suit and Your Necktie - still in early drafts

What I've Been Up To This Week

I've been listening to some more podcasts, including one called Ghost Story which has been very compelling - think ghost story meets true crime meets family drama.

I went to a Christmas event over the weekend which was nice though I remain woefully disorganised for the festive season. I'm hoping all the festive fics will help me get into the spirit of things?

I'm finally reading more again, this week I read Hopeless by Elsie Silver, Penance by Eliza Clark and am currently reading Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldere.

I've continued playing BG3 in news I am sure will surprise no-one. I am super stuck on my first playthrough because my current quests are Orin's battle and Shadowheart's quest conclusion and they are super, super difficult. So we're playing a durge runthrough instead because it's my game, so why not?

Mustachioed Hangman took the No. 2 spot for most total votes, with 529 votes cast. However, there was a 13.6 point drop in his smashability when the mustache is taken into account. He scored 86.4% smash for his previous poll, with 386 smash votes. With the mustache, he scored 70.7% smash, with 374 smash votes. I thought he'd do better, given how popular mustaches seem to be overall, but maybe the mustache fans are just a small, vocal minority.

Eve Torres had the misfortune of being the least smashable woman overall. She was the fourth woman to score less than 50%.

We can now add Rocky Romero to the rankings for Best Friends and Friends:

Did you know that Carpetbag Enterprises is an async-always business? Here's how we make that happen: 1) Creating the simplest rules & procedures possible for everything we do and documenting them as thoroughly as possible. 2) Leveraging async video apps (Loom and Volley) for our weekly team meeting & trouble-shooting/comment sessions. We also use email & text-based comments for notes that don't need additional visual context. 3) Build intentional communication into our operations. We have a weekly async meeting to check in personally and to share company announcements. And each work session includes a short wrapup summary which is reviewed and replied to during the next day's work. Do I get phone calls and texts from my team? Yes. But because we document what constitutes an emergency (see #1), I'm only getting the big stuff I need to know about in real time. I'm not sure how successful our async model would be in business that didn't have such a rigid set of tasks as bookkeeping. As the number of companies doing async increases, I'll be interested to see if they end up with similar core structural principals to ours or if they end up taking a different sort of approach. ......................................................................
