It is a very sad day. Veronica phoned me this morning to tell me that Uta's mother had died after a long illness. I spoke to her just a few days ago and she knew she was dying and was so brave. I am glad that I had the opportunity of meeting her, even if only for a few days and since then we have been in touch all the time. I often thought of her when I was writing my letters and wondering what she thought.
Then yesterday too my friend's grandson was mortally  wounded. He has particles in his brain and there does not seem to be much hope. It was only the other day that I had supper with her and Robbie and she said that she does not sleep at night. That it would break them if something happened to him .
I can think of nothing positive happening in my life. Then I read of our president whom I realise does not have a brain in his head.  He signs a rocket which is going to kill people as if he were writing on someone's bandages leg or knee?  And then there are people who laugh at their sufferings.
It is getting harder and harder to write.  woman Orit Stroch. a settler, who wrote demanding to know whether the pilots who said they would not report for future reserve duty had refused to take part in the war? By the way she is also the one who said that  no doctor should have to treat anyone from the gay community if it conflicted with their religious beliefs. Outrage as far-right minister suggests some pilots refusing air support for Gaza troops
Settlements Minister Orit Strock widely reported to ask at cabinet if some in Air Force are failing to carry out their duties for ideological reasons
Today the Jerusalem municipality came to the tent of the families and took down and tore  all their signs  and a bunch of hooligans came past screaming that all the families are traitors and caused the death of their children and the war and that piece of shit whose two sons cower behind them is quiet. That is Israel today of Netanyahu.
After a long interval because of the war, we had not been to the DCO and decided to go.  We were surprised to find about 15 men there. They had all been summoned by the ISA, the secret service. One indignantly told us that he had to pull his trousers down to his ankles and did not know why. They also told us that the Satmar cult comes into their neighborhoods with the Palestinian flag with no problem. They were all very pleasant.
We then decided to see what is happening at the entrance to Beit Lechem from road 60. Until the war the road was completely open but this is the way it looks now. We stopped a short distance before the checkpoint.
Shlomit got out to photograph and immediately a soldier came running up demanding our IDs. We told him we only have to show IDs to a policeman and when he said he was also a policeman asked to be shown identification.  Also , as we were on the main road of the town and not in the area of the checkpoint, to be shown proof that where we were standing was a closed army area. He claimed that we had photographed him and said that it was easy to identify him....I leave that to your judgement,He said he would phone the police and we said to be our guest. I said to Shlomit that it was just as well we  had not driven off before we saw him approaching us as in this day and age he would probably have taken a shot at us. But all's well that ends well....He had evidently phoned the representative of the DCO. He   knew us from former days at Etzion and we showed him the photo which he did not  ask to have deleted  and  after a short and pleasant conversation continued on our way home.
Today we went to plant trees with one of the farmers from Burin. Not that I could help but I go to identify. This is how the others went up. Her ladyship went up by taxi. i don't think it is the help which is important but that we come. We left early though as the Palestinian authority phoned and said that the area was getting restless and we should go and then too soldiers and settlers started coming down the mountain. But people bought a lot of his olives and olive oil. I asked where his family was ...usually it is very joyous there and the house was so empty but he said it was too dangerous from them to be there so they had gone to live in the village.
But then we also have this......I remember how Israelis said what animals the Palestinians are that whenever there was an attack on Israelis they would go out to celebrate and give out sweets. Evidently Israelis are also keen to learn from Palestinians as this is what some soldiers did.... singing and dancing in the street and giving out sweets at the death of one of the Hamas. Not that I feel any grief for him but this is not the Jewish way. But today I no longer think that there is a Jewish way. I think we have learned only too well of how to hate and how to conduct pogroms. They should remember the Peisach seder where God rebukes his angels for singing when the Egyptians drowned.
and this caricature appeared in one of the far right newspapers. If it  had been from a newspaper on the left or a journalist/ whoever published it would already be sitting in jail/ If you want to know what this is about look at the pdf below. It is too complicated for me to go into it.

Riots, demonstration in Kikar Zion, siren 12.5.2021
Netanyahu is no fool….he is very very clever and many of us had a suspicion of what he was leading up to. I would not be surprised if he calls a state of emergency and continues with his vicious policy of not caring for the county but doing his best to keep himself, his mentally ill wife and son out of jail. Sara Netanyahu once said she did not care if the country burned…and they have succeeded in bringing us to that pass. The first picture is a quote of hers from 2002…… “We will go overseas and the country can burn” and the second a cartoon saying “I said we would leave for overseas and then the country can burn….NOT BEFORE”
This is a horrible morning. I am trying to put my thoughts into place. The whole country is burning. Tel Aviv. Suddenly after all the years of the south suffering and as they say, they were invisible it has become serious. I doubt that in Jerusalem there will be many more rockets. Maybe because of the holy places, Christian and Moslem, maybe because of the large Palestinian community. I feel guilty as I sit here quietly writing.
Netanyahu has done a good job of seeing the Israel on fire. Closing the steps at the Damascus gate …so obvious it would lead to troubles. He knew that he only had to give a small push and with his friend the minister of police everything would develop as it suited him. The news media has also been given its instructions and except for Ha’aretz no other paper mentions what is happening on the other side. Today a comment was passed which many people probably did not hear or take in. That the army would target high rise buildings……in which many families live. The army gave messages for people to evacuate……where were they supposed to go and how many of them actually got the message as we have taken care to destroy much of their communication.
Sunday I did not feel well and it was a furnace outside. Since the episode where I had memory loss and then straight after that had a cold ….many people here dafke in summer are also sick with colds….I feel a lack of desire to do anything.  So  I only went to the shiva for Cecelia in the evening.  My Spanish teacher. I doubt I will go on trying to learn Spanish. I feel as if something has gone out of me. I had a special relationship with her and she was also my friend. I cannot imagine another teacher or a group. And at the shiva it seems that many of her other students felt the same. And every day I hear from someone else who had studied with her.
Monday I went out with Tag Maier to distribute flowers in the Old City to Palestinians. It was a difficult today because seldom do Ramadan and Jerusalem Day coincide.
But this is no united city. So divided, Right and left, Palestians, Jews, Hareidi Jews, …united? And yesterday the schism was even clearer. The religious youth took over the city and their arrogance was unbearable. Some of our members gave flowers to them and when I asked one why she had done so, she said she had many interesting exchanges with some of them who did not even know what we were doing or why. But I saw some of them throwing the  flowers into the rubbish bins. No Palestinian refused us and accepted with a smile.
In the evening I went to my Arabic lesson. I get a lift with Gershon and Edna Baskin and we had just sat down when we heard  a siren. It was faint at first and we looked at one another in bewilderment. Then we heard three loud bangs and realized it was serious. I wondered what was happening in Nofim. I wondered how all these people here, many of whom are less mobile and quick than I am even on the sticks would get down to a shelter. Later I saw the post that one should look for a safe place in your flat as there is very little time between the siren and the fall. So that question is where. My bedroom ….the glass door is next to the bed. The lounge….the windows again. The bathroom….the mirror and the tiles. The corridor is maybe the safest but there are all the painting and photographs in glass. I think the best place for me is next to my door and to put a blanket over myself. I am just sorry for the really old and incapacitated with their carers.  We spent the lesson learning all the words necessary for such an occasion. We came home to a quiet night and then all hell broke through.  Later: My cleaning lady said I should go and sit on the steps between one floor and another.
Coming back there was an amusing incident. As I got out of the car I saw two girls putting coke tins next to the rubbish and I told them to give them to me. I explained to them what it was for and then the one girl said to me, “Are you from Balfour? Were you at Sheik Jarrar.” And again I know you have all been writing to me to stay home but when two teenagers tell me that they look up to me and for them it is important to see me at these places what can I say? Truly I don’t think I am in any danger. I keep to the sides or anything going on and I doubt that even our violent police would attack an old woman. But whom I am scared of is groups like Lahava or those yesterday on the march of the religious. I feel the hatred around us as I did last night with people calling us haters of Israel and traitors and bitches who fuck Arabs.
Yesterday I went to the doctor as the time has come to deal with a hearing problem I have and then to the DCO which was very quiet. There is a young soldier there who has been very sympathetic towards us and is now being transferred. He brought his replacement out and this I do not put in my report. Nadav says that when he leave the army he will join Breaking the Silence. He said that his replacement is a good fellow so we are hoping that we will have the same relationship with him.
I came home and then went to a play. “The Comedians.” It was very funny but I laughed looking at the audience as it was so appropriate for many of us. From a play by Neil Simon about two once famous comedians who are  now uber bottled. When I went out I asked three people to tell the organizer of the transport that I would not be joining them. Later she phoned in anger to ask why I was not on the bus!!! It was so appropriate. I had sat down to phone a friend and when I got up to leave the theatre which was by then pretty deserted I saw a really old lady with her carer sitting outside looking desperate. It turned out that the theatre had ordered a taxi for them and another couple had jumped in and taken it. Being the celebration of Id Il Fitir there were few Arab taxis and they are  a large part of the taxis in Jerusalem.  In the end I stayed with them until I managed to stop a taxi and put them on the way home. I gave them the number of Gett taxi which is more reliable.
I walked down to the city and stopped at Balfour where some of the stalwarts were sitting. The demonstration at Kikar Zion started off with few people but soon grew. There was no talk of a march but then people did start walking down the main street and also on the tracks of the light train. I did not think that that was a good idea and walked along with them but on the pavement. The police arrived but did nothing. Then we came to Kikar Zion, to the square,  where we gathered and in no way were we disturbing pedestrians, the train or anything else. Then the police decided to attack. I think because where we were walking before there were passers by and wanted it to be where they had us to themselves. First of all they started pushing people back but then we saw that they had brought in the dogs and what dogs. Their trainers could hardly control them and the dogs also started fighting amongst themselves. You can understand how dangerous they were. They were real killers.  I have no photographs as everything was very volatile there and I did not want to put my sticks down. They also tried to sic them on to some people. Then they came with the horses….enormous . You have no idea. My question is why when we were obstructing traffic did they do nothing but attack us when we were not bothering anyone else.
In the meantime Lahava and the other young fascists had started screaming at us…the police kept us separated but when the police managed to drive us off they left them celebrating in the square.
I always stand to the back at such times but Eitemar who has stood with us at our demonstrations at Nofim refused to leave me and when one of the policemen seemed to be heading straight for us called to him and said that he was standing with me. He is one of those who is very watchful for me but I tell them to go and do their own thing as I do not want to be a drag on anyone. Last night I yelled at them and said that for 81 years I had been looking out for myself and I could still do so. But when the shunk came we were all away.

THREE PALESTINIAN FAMILIES  22.7.2021
One Palestinian family. There is nothing extraordinary about it other than the fact that our activists know it. For four months Israel prevented the father from coming to work because his sister was ill in Corona, one of the girls had to come to terms with the arrest of her partner with whom she recently married and another daughter was denied a work permit due to a complaint that the police also agree is a false complaint. One family and three small stories that illustrate a drama-free routine under occupation. These stories also illustrate other things - the incredible mental resilience of Palestinians and also the ways in which Israelis can successfully act on issues that affect the lives of millions of people who live here. The documentation below also offers a way to join and support the cause.
Every such "story" requires - apart from the mental struggle - to pay lawyers or other professionals who will work with the Israeli system of oppression. Against this background, the amazing work of Sylvia Peterman, Ronit Dahan Ramati and their partners from the "Prevention Regime -" Black List "team at the checkpoint, which we used in the third story we will present below, has been glorified over the years. They would take thousands of shekels, they give this vital assistance for free and with inspiring commitment and dedication.
We will immediately tell the story of the family. But first we take the opportunity to offer to donate and allow Sylvia and her partners to subsidize legal representation for Palestinians who need it: donations can be transferred - by calling Adi at 050-692-8015 or by bank transfer: Account number 40448302 in the name of Adi Bass, at branch 946 of Bank Leumi . Please write in the comments "Donation to remove prevention" and add your email address so that we can confirm receipt of the donation.
The father engine Corona
These were the months of the corona. Ihab and his two brothers, who live in one of the West Bank villages, arrived at the checkpoint on their way to work in Israel, as they do every day. This time a surprise awaited them: "You can not enter," they were told. "You are Corona engines." The Palestinians have all kinds of prevention and here is a new type - prevention due to the corona, probably so that those who carry the virus do not enter Israel. But Ihab and his brother are not sick at all nor have they come in contact with a verified patient so what is the matter with Corona?
When they inquired, they were told that since their sister had fallen ill in Corona, their entry permit to Israel had been suspended. But their sister lives in another area of the West Bank a few hours drive from them and they have not visited her at all recently. Israel does not really care. They approached the DCO (Director of Coordination and Liaison at the Civil Administration) time and time again and again and again the same answer “Corona Engines.” So for weeks.
Bottom line - on the one hand, the state has refused and refuses to take responsibility for the treatment of Palestinian Corona patients and for vaccinating the Palestinian population against the plague . Israel, on the other hand, is careful to know who the Palestinians who were in Corona are - even though it does not care for them at all - and it also knows who their relatives are. This is how deep our control over the Palestinians is, and this is how far our renunciation of responsibility for their well-being goes.
And of course the state does not care at all that Ihab and his two brothers did not meet with their sister at that time and could not be infected by it and therefore there is no danger in their entry into Israel. Thus, the livelihoods of three Palestinian families were suspended for a month. And who knows how long it would have continued.
When we visited the family then we found out the story and that for a month now Ihab and his brother have not been able to get to work. "Why didn't you tell us before?" We asked Ihab. Years we have known the family and we know what poverty she lives in and how much the low salary that Ihab earns in hard work is essential for them. And since in this family we are allowed to laugh at everything we answered ourselves: "Actually you are kicking that you should not go to work. You wanted freedom!". But after we laughed he got serious and said how difficult the situation is.
We called Haaretz journalist Amira Hess and told her the story. And she, not being lazy, made a few phone calls to the Civil Administration and within 24 hours the scandalous "prevention" was eliminated. "It turns out there are still people who listen to me," she remarked. We called Ihab to tell him and he immediately drove to the checkpoint to check, was unable to wait until the next morning. "They let me in," he called after two hours. And so Ihab and his brother returned to work. The salaries of the month in which they were prevented from earning a living no one will repay them.
The daughter who takes care of her arrested spouse
A month and maybe two months passed and the family called to tell that the spouse of one of the girls - Basma by name - had been arrested by the army. Jamal returned from work at night and soldiers confronting Palestinians decided that he would throw stones at them. Basma and Jamal got married several months ago; A fresh young couple. A few days later we visited the family and also met Basma who had returned to her parents' house. Anxiety and unhappiness were evident on her face.
Detention in an Israeli prison is not uncommon for Palestinians . Basma's father was also arrested years ago. Still, the anxiety there and the lack of knowledge there and the tension there - of course. Jamal told Basma how he was beaten in custody. He does not receive family visits but they manage to talk on the phone a few minutes a week.
At first Basma and her parents still hoped that within a week or two the army would recognize his mistake and release Jamal. We were much less optimistic. They were slowly hurt by the recognition that the trial would last for many months during which Jamal would remain in prison . Usually an Israeli accused of a crime can be released and should not be in prison during his trial. Not so with Palestinian judges.
After a few weeks, Basma's sense of humor returned. "He's going to do dental care at the expense of the military. I told him he put gold teeth. That I want him back all gold at the expense of the occupation." In the military court, matters are progressing lazily. The lawsuit is based on the testimony of a soldier who allegedly identified Jamal as throwing stones. But the description that the soldier gave clearly does not fit Jamal's physical characteristics. For the military prosecutor this is not a reason to admit a mistake. Instead he asked for the date of the hearing to be postponed. And meanwhile Jamal in the military prison. Life goes on week after week and for Basma the next hearing date is the destination she is eyeing.
Another daughter "police engine"
Dalal works in the settlement. A few weeks ago, one of the residents there - who is known not to be clear - complained to the police that Dalal had allegedly attacked her. And so Dalal entered the category of "police engine", her work permit was suspended and she was forced not to come to work. This is a serial complainant and Dalal's employer told her not to worry because within two weeks the prevention would be removed.
After two weeks the police did decide that there was no real complaint. But the removal of the prevention will only take place after the State Attorney's Office for closing the case. The prosecution is in no hurry and closing the case could take months. And again the sense of family humor: "The one who really suffers is my fiancé," says Dalal. "Every day he has to take me for a walk somewhere else." "And because they are not allowed to be alone," the mother explains, laughing, "Dalal's little sisters join in and earn trips."
But another week passes and another week and Dalal is in distress. We turned with her case to Sylvia and Roni who, as always, immediately got involved and with the help of the checkpoint staff of the checkpoint that works with them,  handled the paperwork and submitted the urgent request to close the case and remove the prevention. After thousands of such cases Sylvia swims well in the depths of the exhausting bureaucracy of the permit regime. "Actually, it could be that in Dalal's case it is possible to act in another way," she explains and immediately activates her team to write another letter.
Dalal is still waiting but we hope Sylvia will be able to resolve the matter soon.
And this is an opportunity to contribute and help subsidize legal representation in cases where this dedicated team of volunteers needs the assistance of attorney Tamir Blank (who settles for a minimal fee). Donations can be transferred - by looking at Adi at 050-692-8015 or by bank transfer: Account number 40448302 in the name of Adi Bass, at branch 946 of Bank Leumi, please write in the comments "Donation to remove prevention" and add your email address so we can confirm The receipt of the donation.
And of course you can join us and the practitioners who build relationships with Palestinian partners and stand by them when needed. If you have any questions about transferring the donation or joining the charity, you can write to us and we will respond promptly.
These are three stories of one family from the last four months. An ordinary but Palestinian family. Countless other such stories - for every Palestinian family its stories - that never come to the attention of the Israeli public are the non-dramatic routine of the reality of life under occupation.
