Over the past few months, I've become fascinated with small portable reel to reel tape recorders. I've purchased a few from online auctions. It's a special treat when they come with a tape recording as part of the deal. This one I got earlier this week was especially interesting. It mostly consists of a guy dictating a "letter" to send to his folks (I guess). He was stationed near Vûng Tàu, in what was then South Vietnam. He must have been in the Navy, as he spoke of being situated a few miles from the mouth of a river (couldn't make out which one), waiting out a typhoon. He spoke often of "when we get back to Guam". It was interesting, yet a bit boring at the same time. He couldn't think of much to say, and would speak for a couple of minutes, turn off the recorder, then come back to it later. He would speak of eating cake and other food that had been sent to him. Judging from the music in the background (The Animals, mainly), it must have been from the late '60s. No clues as to who he was, or where he was from. There are a few places on the tape where he and others had recorded over his "letter". Recent auction find - an old Sears model 6243 portable tape recorder from the 60s (?). The batteries were still in it. Yeesh. The 9v battery clip was corroded, so I replaced that. One of the C battery negative terminals had corroded beyond repair, so I got a 3v power supply and hooked it up. Cleaned it up, put on a tape from another deck. PSU section completely ready, corresponding cables included! 😊Rectifier PCB has four new rectifier bridges and a new filtering capacitor for the +48V phantom supply. Not visible though are the four huge reservoir caps, hidden behind the top cover. . . . My own #Studer #A807MKII restoration project (cont') . AAAARRGGHHHH!!!! 😱 . Just discovered this, right after I finished cleaning the power transformer's frame!!! 😱 . The original metal side panels of my recorder had effectively been torn. But I'm somewhat surprised that the internal frame (which is right in the middle of the machine) on which the power transformer is attached has been bent, too... must have been a hell of a shock that twisted out of shape a ca. 1.5mm-thick, hard, stiff and very rigid piece of steel metal! 😪 . . . My own #Studer #A807MKII restoration project (cont') . Side panels of the second chassis now ready for a good shower. Take that 25 years old grime off those parts, now! 😉 . Anyway, both panels clearly show that the recorder might have been parted with because it was totally out-of-service: there's an outer layer of dark grey soot, typical of overheated electronic components.
