Clay‚ the first (and perhaps best) of the three #short plays concerns a man's obsession with the land he works‚ to the detriment of his family and his health. shot with an almost folk #horror sensibility‚ it's a subtle beast; quite unlike the second‚ a broad comic piece about a tough matriarch and her various children. the #third has a more overt sense of the supernatural again‚ or at least a kind of psychological horror (very much subtextual) in its study of a #sensitive urban woman driven slowly out of her wits by dual isolations of a new home in the country and a cruelly distant husband #all three plays benefit from centering strong female characters‚ all three rewarded by excellent casting. as i said‚ watch if you can

Jun: Haha. I just thought it was a pretty rare sight to see you acting like a proper senior, Ibara. Isn't it nice doing stuff like this every now and then?

Hiyori: "Fufu. As teammates worked closely with one another, the game ran a most interesting course..."

"But one way or another, the only ones left in the arena are the nimble Mitsuru-kun together with Shino-kun, who has for some reason been left untouched by everyone else!

Tomoya: “There’s no way I could target Hajime… Every time I reached out toward him, he’d just start trembling, his eyes brimming with tears.”

“If I pushed him into the water, I’d feel like I was the bad guy here.”

Hajime: “Th-That was my strategy! I thought that even if I wasn’t able to push anyone else off, I’d make it to the last one standing and win that way!”

Ibara: “Fufu. That truly is a rabbit’s — that is to say, a herbivore’s strategy ♪”

Hajime: “Yes! I’m a Ra*bit after all!”

“Eeeek?!”

Mitsuru: “BAM! And I’m a bunny just like you, so I’m not gonna show any mercy! If anything, it wouldn’t be right to hold back when we’re goin’ head to head like this!”

Nagisa: “...Yes, I felt the same way. We love Ibara, but we still directed all our attacks at him.”

Ibara: “No, it’s very clear that you simply have a grudge against me!”

“Tch! Was this payback for trying to manipulate everyone into reacting in amusing ways?”

Hiyori: "Mmhm, and you too ought to have more amusing reactions yourself — after all, this is a variety show, yes?'

Jun: "For that matter, maybe it was amusing to you but it wasn't fun for me in the slightest, y'know~? The way you kept bringing Jin Sagami up to mess with me and all that?"

Ibara: “You only have yourself to blame for being so boring!”

“If you’d like me to stop, you need but do something interesting that doesn’t involve Jin Sagami or His Highness Hiyori! Well? I’m waiting!”

Nagisa: “...Settle down, you two. The water sumo match is still ongoing; we should stay quiet until the victor is crowned.”

“...Tenma-kun is giving it his all inside the ring. I’d feel terrible if the cameras started focusing on us instead of him.”

Mitsuru: “Thanks for lookin’ out for me, Nagisa-senpai! I’m gonna win this for the both of us! HAAAWWW!!!!”

Hajime: “W-W-WAH?!”

Ibara: “Please don’t hesitate to retire from the match if things seem grim, Jimenyan!”

“The reward isn’t at all commensurate with the effort you have to put in, and the gap in points between us and the other teams isn’t too large. It’s more than alright for you to lose!”

Hajime: “I-I know, but—”

Mitsuru: (Now’s my chance! Hajime-chan’s a real carin’ person, so if someone talks to him, he’ll turn to them to give ‘em his full attention! That’s my openin’!)

(I feel kinda bad ‘cause Hajime-chan’s really given it his all today, but this is a battle between him and me and it has to be done! I’ll send him flyin’!)

“GAARRRRR!!!!”

Hajime: “—Hehe. It’s pretty easy to guess what you’re thinking, Mitsuru-kun.”

Mitsuru: (...?! Hajime-chan disappeared?! Did he dodge me?!”

Hajime: “Sorry! Now’s my chance while you’ve lost your balance—there!”

Mitsuru: “Wh-Whoaaa?!”

Nazuna: “—Oof, he fell off.”

Tomoya: “Whoa… I feel like I just saw something super out of the ordinary with Hajime winning against Mitsuru in a battle of physical strength like that.”

Mitsuru: “Pffah! S-Sorry, Nagisa-senpai! I lost!”

Nagisa: “...There’s no need to apologize. You put up a good fight ♪”

“...I’m quite surprised, though; I had no idea that boy — Shino-kun — had such a clever strategy in mind.”

Ibara: “Heheh. I would say that he’s more calculating than you might expect, but that isn’t exactly accurate. He’s simply very bright, and I’ve also instructed him in the ways of strategizing.”

Hajime: “Yes! Since we’re spending all this time together, I thought I‘d try to absorb a bunch of Ibanyan’s good qualit—W-WAH?!”

“HYAAAH?!”

Tomoya: “Huh? Why’d you fall, Hajime?!”

Hajime: “Pffah! Once it hit me that I’d won, I got careless and slipped! When I dodged Mitsuru-kun, I ended up in a super unnatural pose so I lost my balance!”

Hiyori: "Fufu. Why, isn't he just a charming little thing? That shot just now seems like it could go straight to air."

Jun: "Yeah. No one woulda expected that, so it was pretty fun to watch."

"Plus it happened after the match got decided, so it's not gonna look like he lost and dragged his own team down"."

Hiyori: "If that boy could pull something like that off intentionally, rather than by chance, he'll be taking things to a whole new level."

"True, it's all the more adorable if naturally done, but I do think it'd be unbecoming for a professional to be that unpredictable."

Nagisa: “...Fufu. You’re more than welcome to give commentary, but why don’t we announce the victor first?”

Nazuna: “Yeah. Congrats, Hajime-chin, you’re the winner of water sumo~!”

Hajime: “Huh? Eh-Ehehe...♪”

“Ibanyan! I did it! I won!”

*whisper* ...Although you’d rather not stand out, Ibanyan, so you probably didn’t want to win all that much.

Ibara: …No. I won’t say that I don’t appreciate your consideration, but you’ve made a misassumption.

Triumphing in a mere game such as this one is nothing boast-worthy, but every win is a cause for celebration.

There’s no reason for me to criticize the person who led me to victory. On the contrary, I should be praising you.

“You did very well. That was a splendid performance, Jimenyan.”

Hajime: “...! Yes! I gave it everything I had!”

Jun: ... ♪

Ibara: Jun? Care to share what’s so funny with the rest of the class?

Jun: Haha. I just thought it was a pretty rare sight to see you acting like a proper senior, Ibara. Isn't it nice doing stuff like this every now and then?

I mean, working together with friends and doing your best... that's what it means to be a kid, right?

It seems like you've been thinking up a storm over all this like you usually do, but...

In the end, maybe all Ohii-san and Nagi-senpai wanted was for us to experience this kinda thing together with them, yeah?

Ibara: Hm. In that case, they could have simply told us as much; there was no need for them to kick up such a fuss.

Jun: Haha. I mean, you'd never take it seriously if it wasn't for work, right? ...You might be surprised to hear this, but we have you in our hearts and understand you more than you'd expect.
