Most GP vets I know recommend glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supplementation for dog at risk of osteoarthritis. They're both precursors to substances naturally found in cartilage, and the general claim is that supplementation reduces joint inflammation and protects cartilage from damage. Typically these are sold under the names Cosequin or Dasuquin. They're very popular with dog owners, and very commonly sold by both pet stores and vets.
I just went to a talk on osteoarthritis by an orthopedic specialist, and she claimed that these supplements were a waste of money, because they're not very bioavailable. The molecules are too large to make it through the GI system intact, and don't get to the joints where they'd be useful. So they're promising in vitro but aren't clinically useful.
So, rather than take her word for it, I looked it up. I found a 2017 literature review on the subject. Their conclusions are so frustrating that I want to quote directly from the article:
"Despite the trend towards more stringent criteria for veterinary nutraceutical products, the research community continues to conduct and publish novel, low-quality studies without consistent evaluation methods and varying products/doses...
These results are of questionable validity due to several trial shortcomings. First is the absence of therapeutic standardization. The sources of active ingredients, manufacturers of products, formulations, combinations of active ingredients, treatment doses, regimens, and durations of therapy differed significantly between trials. Second, multiple potential sources of bias were present in the trials, including the lack of a standardized follow-up timeframe, unexplained loss to follow-up, flawed study protocols, and incomplete data sets. Moreover, all of the clinical trials relied on subjective outcome measures to some extent, and the absence of standardized owner and veterinarian assessments increased the risk of bias in the reported results and diminished internal study validity.
The trials generally lacked peer review and were at risk of funding bias due to company sponsorship. Finally, there was an overall lack of generalizability of trial results. The trials were small in terms of the number of subjects used and subject baseline characteristics were not always disclosed...
Based on the available literature, the potential benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin use in osteoarthritic canines can neither be confirmed nor denied."
We are still so far behind human medicine in terms of evidence-based medicine...and human medicine is already worse than you'd hope. It's maddening. So in conclusion, I have no idea whether Cosequin/Dasuquin is helpful at all, and neither does anyone else.

There is a lot of misinformation when it comes to pet food, I hope this can shed some light. - Grains are necessary (Unless diagnosed with grain allergies by a veterinarian). - Raw isn't always best. (Raw/home cooked diets need to be properly formulated by a board certified nutritionist to be balanced, more information below). - Grain free can be dangerous. - The vast majority of companies do not follow WSAVA guidelines. - Veterinarians DO NOT get kick backs from suggesting food. How are they going to get a kickback from a food you didn't even buy from them? If anything, the pet store employees are getting kick backs for suggesting foods! The “Big Five” Brands are the five brands that adhere to WSAVA guidelines (World Small Animal Veterinary Association). Which are: - Employs one or more full-time qualified nutritionist(s) and willingly discloses their credentials. - Foods are formulated by a qualified team of professionals such as nutritionists, toxicologists, food scientists etc. - Undergoes feeding trials that meet or exceed AAFCO standards, for most or all formulations. - Foods are produced and manufactured in US facilities, owned and operated by the manufacturer, or under close supervision of the manufacturer. Equipped with machinery, laboratories and staff that provide extensive on-site quality assurance. - Provides detailed description on quality control protocol. Selection criteria for partners, analysis and sample tracking of externally sourced ingredients, daily safety checks of product batches and facilities, physical inspection, key nutrient testing before final packing. - Provides exact number for any nutrient on an energy basis (grams per kcal). - Readily provides kcal content per gram and per cup. - Conducts research relevant to nutrition, products marketed, and product claims. Publishes research in peer-reviewed journals. So let’s get to it. The “Big Five” Brands are: Royal Canin - Breed specific lines that were created in conjunction with breeders and veterinarians, general health lines and targeted health lines + RX diets Eukanuba - Owned by Royal Canin, mainly their performance lines + general health lines Purina - Sport lines, general health lines, targeted health lines, most accessible and cost effective + RX diets IAMS - General health lines, cost effective, easily accessible Hills Pet - General health lines, targeted health lines + RX diets If you’d like to do some reading… Here are multiple links for kibble, raw diets, grain free vs grain inclusive, Diet Associated DCM and WSAVA. Open-Source Platform Cuts Costs for Running AI - Technology Org

Open-Source Platform Cuts Costs for Running AI - Technology Org
Cornell researchers have released a new, open-source platform called Cascade that can run artificial intelligence (AI) models in a way that slashes expenses and energy costs while dramatically improving performance.
Artificial intelligence hardware – artistic interpretation. Image credit: Alius Noreika, created with AI Image Creator
Cascade is designed for settings like smart traffic intersections, medical diagnostics, equipment servicing using augmented reality, digital agriculture, smart power grids and automatic product inspection during manufacturing – situations where AI models must react within a fraction of a second. It is already in use by College of Veterinary Medicine researchers monitoring cows for risk of mastitis.
With the rise of AI, many companies are eager to leverage new capabilities but worried about the associated computing costs and the risks of sharing private data with AI companies or sending sensitive information into the cloud – far-off servers accessed through the internet.
Also, today’s AI models are slow, limiting their use in settings where data must be transferred back and forth or the model is controlling an automated system.
A team led by Ken Birman, professor of computer science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, combined several innovations to address these concerns.
Birman partnered with Weijia Song, a senior research associate, to develop an edge computing system they named Cascade. Edge computing is an approach that places the computation and data storage closer to the sources of data, protecting sensitive information. Song’s “zero copy” edge computing design minimizes data movement.
The AI models don’t have to wait to fetch data when reacting to an event, which enables faster responses, the researchers said.
“Cascade enables users to put machine learning and data fusion really close to the edge of the internet, so artificially intelligent actions can occur instantly,” Birman said. “This contrasts with standard cloud computing approaches, where the frequent movement of data from machine to machine forces those same AIs to wait, resulting in long delays perceptible to the user.”
Cascade is giving impressive results, with most programs running two to 10 times faster than cloud-based applications, and some computer vision tasks speeding up by factors of 20 or more. Larger AI models see the most benefit.
Moreover, the approach is easy to use: “Cascade often requires no changes at all to the AI software,” Birman said.
Alicia Yang, a doctoral student in the field of computer science, was one of several student researchers in the effort. She developed Navigator, a memory manager and task scheduler for AI workflows that further boosts performance.
“Navigator really pays off when a number of applications need to share expensive hardware,” Yang said. “Compared to cloud-based approaches, Navigator accomplishes the same work in less time and uses the hardware far more efficiently.”
In CVM, Parminder Basran, associate research professor of medical oncology in the Department of Clinical Sciences, and Matthias Wieland, Ph.D. ’21, assistant professor in the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, are using Cascade to monitor dairy cows for signs of increased mastitis – a common infection in the mammary gland that reduces milk production.
By imaging the udders of thousands of cows during each milking session and comparing the new photos to those from past milkings, an AI model running on Cascade identifies dry skin, open lesions, rough teat ends and other changes that may signal disease. If early symptoms are detected, cows could be subjected to a medicinal rinse at the milking station to potentially head off a full-blown infection.
Thiago Garrett, a visiting researcher from the University of Oslo, used Cascade to build a prototype “smart traffic intersection.”
His solution tracks crowded settings packed with people, cars, bicycles and other objects, anticipates possible collisions and warns of risks – within milliseconds after images are captured. When he ran the same AI model on a cloud computing infrastructure, it took seconds to sense possible accidents, far too late to sound a warning.
With the new open-source release, Birman’s group hopes other researchers will explore possible uses for Cascade, making AI applications more widely accessible.
“Our goal is to see it used,” Birman said. “Our Cornell effort is supported by the government and many companies. This open-source release will allow the public to benefit from what we created.”

If you've eaten pig in the last month, and/or intend to do so again, you owe it to the animals to see how they're being killed.
...slaughterhouses have become warier of activists, improving their physical security, tightening their access controls, and searching out hidden surveillance devices. In an earlier attempt in 2020, in fact, Deerbrook hid cameras without remote connectivity in a slaughterhouse gas chamber, but those were discovered before she could retrieve any footage.
When WIRED reached out to Smithfield Foods and shared DxE’s videos with the company, it responded in a statement that “Smithfield is committed to the safety, health, and comfort of our animals and strictly follows approved laws, regulations and best practices for humane animal stunning prior to harvest. We adhere to all humane handling and stunning regulations for livestock with the oversight of the United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service.” The company pointed out that organizations like the USDA and the American Veterinary Medicine Association have recognized carbon dioxide gas chambers as complying with humane slaughter laws for years. It argued that “carbon dioxide stunning quickly renders hogs into a state of analgesia,” adding that its programs were “created in consultation with two of the world’s foremost experts in animal behavior and handling.” Gas chamber manufacturing firm Marel didn’t respond to WIRED’s request for comment.
Watch the video, read the official comment on the comfort of the animals involved, and please understand that this is what they mean when they say "humane," with legal backing. And they are actively blocking out any attempts at transparency and legally hogtying activists. Because they want their words to be the only thing on your mind when you consider buying their products, not recordings of what they actually do.

U.S. Veterinary Orthopedic Medicine Market Growth & Trends
The U.S. veterinary orthopedic medicine market size is expected to reach USD 814.51 million by 2030, registering a CAGR of 7.2% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The market is primarily driven by the increasing pet population, adoption of pet insurance, rising prevalence of diseases among animals, and advancements in veterinary medicine.
For instance, in October 2023, the FDA approved Librela (bedinvetmab injection), making it the first monoclonal antibody for treating osteoarthritis-related pain in dogs. In addition, in April 2022, American Regent Animal Health, a division of American Regent, Inc., received FDA approval to extend the shelf life of Adequan Canine and Adequan i.m. The expiration date for both products was increased from 24 months to 36 months from the date of manufacture.
Key players in the veterinary orthopedic medicine market are engaging in strategic initiatives like product launches, collaborations, and acquisitions to make their market presence more prominent, impelling market growth. In September 2022, Zoetis acquired Jurox, a private animal health company specializing in veterinary medicines for livestock and companion animals. The deal, finalized in August 2021, included Jurox's operations in Australia and regional offices in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. Such initiatives are anticipated to drive market growth.
For instance, in October 2023, Athersys, Inc. (ATHX), a cell therapy and regenerative medicine company, entered into a licensing agreement with Ardent Animal Health. With this move, Athersys, known for its work with MultiStem (invimestrocel) in critical care, entered the field of animal health. This collaboration with Ardent, a veterinary biotech firm specializing in regenerative medicine and cancer therapies for animals, highlights Athersys’ commitment to advancing veterinary care.
Some key impacts of the pandemic and respective lockdowns on the market include dampened growth, decreased sales, supply chain disruptions, and operational challenges. However, the pandemic also propelled concerns over animal health and welfare, strengthened the pet parent and animal bond, and increased pet adoption. Moreover, the market witnessed an improved medicalization rate, pet expenditure, and adoption of pet insurance.
Increasing pet humanization and improved diagnostic rates were other positive impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the veterinary sector. In 2021, the market recorded increased demand and sale of veterinary medicines, including orthopedic medicines. In 2022, other macroeconomic uncertainties, such as global recession and cost inflation, adversely impacted the business. However, as the underlying market drivers remain unchanged owing to an increasing prevalence of orthopedic disorders in dogs and horses, the market is estimated to grow notably over the forecast period.

The Crucial Role of Distributors in Veterinary Medicine Storage Conditions
The Crucial Role of Distributors in Veterinary Medicine Storage Conditions
When it comes to veterinary clinics, the proper storage of medications is pivotal in ensuring the effectiveness of treatments and the overall health of the animals in care. Distributors of veterinary pharmaceuticals have an integral role in this delicate system, as they are the bridge between veterinary pharma companies and the clinics that administer the medicines to our beloved animals.
Temperature-Controlled Deliveries
One of the primary responsibilities of a distributor is to maintain the integrity of medicines during transit. Since many veterinary medications require temperature-controlled environments, distributors must have proper cold chain management systems in place. Substandard transportation conditions can lead to degraded medications, which not only poses a risk to animal health but also represents a financial loss for clinics.
Education and Protocols
While veterinary pharma companies provide specifications for storage conditions, the role of the distributor is also educational. They must ensure that veterinary staff are aware of the storage parameters for each medication type. This means training on the correct usage of refrigeration units, understanding the importance of maintaining consistent temperature logs, and knowing what actions to take when equipment malfunctions occur.
Regular Inventory Checks
It's crucial for distributors to coordinate with clinics to perform regular inventory checks, ensuring that all medication is within its expiration date and has been stored under the correct conditions. These checks also provide an opportunity to remove any stock that may have compromised efficacy due to storage errors.
Technology and Monitoring
Advanced distributors employ technology to monitor and control the conditions of medications both in transit and in the clinic. Technologies such as telemetry units in delivery trucks and storage facilities allow real-time tracking of ambient conditions, and in some cases, distributors can provide clinics with smart monitoring systems that alert staff to any storage anomalies.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the role of distributors in managing medicine storage conditions is a collaborative one. It’s not just about delivering products from veterinary pharma companies to clinics; it involves an ongoing process of education, quality control, and technological investment. Only with diligent oversight and cooperation between all parties can the highest standards of veterinary care be upheld.
A distributor’s task is thus clear: they must be the vigilant custodians of veterinary medicines, from the point of manufacture to administration, ensuring efficacy and safety for animal patients everywhere.

I am not at all upset with u giving ur pup rawhide -- I have no dog as of yet -- but I wanna know the news so I can reassure all the pup owners in my life who are nervous!!
aaaaa sorry this is so late but I'M HERE to spread the good word
ok first of all this is Not a paid advertisement lmao but as a dog parent and professional who is very skeptical of all dog product manufacturers (and also ALWAYS believed that rawhide is bad, esp coming from a veterinary background) i will 100% be reordering this stuff for the foreseeable future
one of my fav and most trusted trainers always recommends this brand, farm hounds, bc ppl are always asking what chews she buys for her dogs, one of whom is a chewing Machine. i got a coupon from her and (skeptically) ordered their rawhide rolls BECAUSE:
the vast majority of standard rawhide products only use the inner layer of hide; the top outermost layer is used for tanning bc it's more durable and leather sells for more $ than dog chews. the hide from this company uses the Entire hide sourced from small farms
standard rawhide is also chemically treated (which is why it's generally that light white-ish color) to speed up the production process to make more $ instead of allowing them to dry naturally, which this company does
so i have two big dogs at home who love to chew. so i ordered these and started giving them 20-30 min daily chew sessions (1. edible chews like this should always be supervised 2. that's enough time for all the satisfying chewing endorphins to be released in their little brains and for them to scrape off the plaque from their teef, and 3. i wanted the hides to last longer than 2 days lmao)
and i am genuinely So impressed by how long they lasted and how durable they were. the other dog nola (60lb) actually still has like half of hers left after almost 2 weeks, and the only reason echo (90lb) finished hers is bc ppl have been working on the house and she was rly stressed so i just let her chew while someone was working in her line of sight for a while
ok ty for coming to my ted talk on rawhide, moral of the story: don't buy regular rawhide but some of it is actually good and dogs need to chew on non-plastic stuff. also here is a link to their website, they also have other chews and treats that are ethically sourced and produced! (i stg this is not a fucking advertisement shkjshhsd i'm just glad to have found them bc most manufacturers Suck)
