ngl but i think that's how snow would describe katniss too, decades in the future. "she only wants to save her skin" - he's. clearly projecting his own views on human nature and lucy gray's "betrayal" - the nail to the coffin, so to speak - onto her. also him derangedly shooting at the mockingjays is really hilarious considering that another district 12 girl with a beautiful singing voice who the rebels literally called "the mockingjay" is going to be his ruination. the ghosts of past sins etc.

#also it's ironic that charming and apparently innocuous lucy gray is heavily correlated with snakes (it's not just coryo!) #therefore a dangerous creature #while katniss (an actual hunter and a fabulous shot) is nicknamed like a harmless singing bird #and how this singing bird in coriolanus' mind is a symbol of chaos and what happens if order and control are not imposed on society etc. #val rereads thg #val speaks #txt

unpopular opinion: coriolanus may have turned into a selfish asshole going on genocidal dictator but he's got a point here. would you give up your future for a girl you've known for like. two months? and live in the wilderness without certainty of food, shelter, heating in winter time, plus all those wild beasts that enjoy the taste of human flesh and disgusting insects going around? while you're no hunter and a city boy through and through? ngl but i would have faltered here too. idc much for Money Power Glory as much as i used to when i was an ambitious teen but i value my peace of mind and idt i'd find it in the woods

one thing that must be said about coriolanus and katniss is that they both share such a snarky inner voice that despite the seriousness of thg saga (especially mockingjay - the last chapters almost reduced me to tears, it was that heavy) it made me chuckle more than a few times

#coryo is such a petty bitch tho sjehdhdh #there are interesting similarities but also very stark differences! #1. they both have an obvious fixation on food and their growth was somewhat stunted by malnutrition #2. they both have a special memory token from one of their (dead) parents and are emotionally distant from the other #3. they're both survivors (katniss even describes snow in mockingjay as 'the consummate survivor') but coryo relies on his charm and cunning #(a lot of what he shows outwardly is a carefully trimmed performance) #while she's a born hunter and also quite smart but not a planner (actually i'd say katniss can be quite impulsive sometimes) #but she's also forced to perform (in completely different circumstances and a life or death situation) #and i think that's one of the reasons snow thinks everything that comes out of her mouth is a lie. he's projecting #the major difference so far is obviously that coryo is such a snob asshole lmao #but... unpopular opinion: he doesn't start as evil incarnate and i don't understand how people could come out of tboas with this take #that's the point! he gets corrupted by his own choice #but the boy he used to be (as much as he was a capitol born and bred elitist not exactly endorsed #with a huge capability for emotional depth and human warmth) would be horrified by a lot of the crimes he committed later in his life #so far he's just an annoying teenager. emotionally stunted and not very sincere but not an evil guy by any means #anyway both his and katniss' sarcasm are a++ #val rereads thg #val speaks #val rambles in the tags #txt

wow, mockingjay was. much more violent and gory than i remembered

#in my defense the last time i've read this book i was. 20 maybe? so almost 10 years ago #i watched pt 2 a few years after it came out #tho it's still not as... vivid and terrifying as the book is #one thing collins always stands out for among ya writers is her descriptions of ptsd symptoms and grief #and war and its awful consequences are well-written. maybe bcs we see it all through katniss' pov but imo they really get you #inside this world of horror and devastation this poor girl is living in (god. no wonder she's so broken!) #i think this is something that was lacking in tbosas (for plot reasons) #and it was sorely missed because it's one of the highlights of the series and as i stated above #one of collins' strengths as a writer imo #she doesn't perform as well when she's delving into complex philosophy about good and evil (she doesn't get above what's basic) #and villain origin stories despite all tbosas' potential. they're a different beast to tackle #just imo obv. tho as you can see from my pfp i still ate the shit out of that movie lmao #val rereads thg #val speaks #txt

glad to spot another parallel/contrast between coriolanus and katniss (him being a favorite of this old cat, she with her rocky relationship with buttercup) and to see that my headcanon about snow liking cats is basically canon

it's somehow both hilarious and tragic how sejanus starts thinking coriolanus is his bestiest friend ever while on his part coryo just. doesn't give a fuck about him 80% of the time

#it reminds me of that girl in middle school i didn't particularly like but everyone bullied her and i was bullied too #so even if i didn't want her friendship i was kind to her because... well you know. common decency? i didn't want her to feel bad #it's not like i hated her or everything. but i pitied her and idt that's a good foundation for friendship #anyway i'm pretty sure i've been the sejanus for quite a few coryos. they meant more to me than i meant to them and it showed and i HATE it #i'll never enter another one-sided friendship/relationship again. i have some pride too #val rereads thg #val speaks #txt
