You know the fanfic on AO3 about rangers playing hide and seek with the apprentices at the gathering, and Will disguises himself as Halt? I know there's mentioned how Gilan as an apprentice hid and what happened next but in a different year, perhaps, what if Gilan hides in the commandant's tent and the rangers find him sitting in the middle of reports after they spend an hour in pouring rain and the little shit has the audacity to just look up and say 'Geldon, you spelled Trelleth Fief wrong' before running for his life.
And that's actually the moment Crowley knows this kid is going to sit in his chair one day.
I know Gilan mainly plays the big brother role in the story, but I think everyone kind of forgets he's actually the son of one of the best kingdom strategists, he grew up between knights, barons, battle masters and diplomats, and he's got to know what's up because otherwise he is going to be used as a weak link to his dad. At this point, he probably has excellent foreign connections because, unlike someone, he doesn't like to make royals and highborn angry in his free time and thanks to his outgoing personality, he probably knows almost every ranger very well and knows about many problems the corps encounter because of it. There is a leader hidden behind the bright eyes and cheerful smiles and, beside Sir David, Crowley recognizes it first.

"ranger's apprentice is a kids series"
oh ok, meanwhile
Will's drug addiction
Halt's traumatic childhood
Horace's bullies quite literally almost murdering him
The fucking creepy Kalkara things
Pretty much every violent fight scene
Sir Karen quite literally mind-controlling Alyss and attempting to seduce her
Will graphically almost dying in the desert from dehydration
Halt almost dying in b9
Horace using a literal torture method to get an answer out of the Genovesan (bro just casually poisoned him and made him run around to make it spread faster through his bloodstream like can someone say iconic)
The way Will's parents were basically both murdered
Will's speech for Horace and Cassandra's wedding. (it's just not suitable for any person of any age)
The graphically portrayed animal abuse
Alyss' death. Which was actually pretty gruesome, she died in pretty much the most tragic way someone could die. A fire so intense her body was never even recovered? which is um kind of traumatizing imo
Will's 'vigilante shit-- revenge' era, and his depression being handled very very poorly by his friends and family (literally made me angry reading those chapters for the first time)
Maddie quite literally getting drunk. at 15 years old. ma’am.
Dimon and Maddie's hookup
many, many, many, deaths. like many on-screen deaths. like one day I’m gonna go through the books and make a kill count. there’s legit a lot of death. (i am actually going to make a kill count now)
Rangers, in general, are pretty brutal people tbh. The way they handle a lot of situations is just kinda like "Eh strip them down to their underwear. dehumanize them, they deserve it." and ummm sure it's "funny" and I think that's what Flanagan was going for, but it's a littleee edgy on a moral level like calm down, they tried to rob you, but calm down
On that note, Gilan legitimately thinking of hanging some highway robbers and only being stopped because of the lack of trees around him. truly an icon.

Ranger's Apprentice Charcters at an annual family gathering
(yes, they are all a family now)
Will and Gilan: The cousins that pretend to not have seen each other for a year. In reality, they see each other at least twice a week. They greet each other extremely loud and hit each other on the backs in a way that leaves marks. After that, they run around, do impressions of other family members, or get up to other shenanigans.
Horace: Without fail, he's somewhere near the cake buffet. He talks with everyone near him, gives ratings on the different cakes, and after his latest victim left, he turns to Sandra and Pauline and asks how he is related with that person
Pauline and Sandra: They chat the whole time and agree on pretty much every topic. They also do the passive-aggressive children comparing (i.e. 'My son just graduated and started a business. What's your kid up to?') They always say they should meet up and chat more, but never do so.
David, Arald, and Duncan: As soon as the evening comes around, they're the dads that go BBQing outside. With a beer in hand, they will chat while making actually pretty decent food. Also, they will BBQ every year without exceptions. They don't care if there's a blizzard. It's just some cold water after all, that can't stop them. Also, Gilan and Will occasionally try to sabotage them, which always ends up being entertainment for all. The three also insult each other heavily, but brush it off like it is nothing.
Cassie and Alyss: From afar, they just look like two friends getting along splendidly, chatting away about their hobbies. In reality, they are not talking about their hobbies. Stories about local murders, rape, and breakup gossip get shared like they are conversations about the weather. If you don't need a therapist when walking away from their conversation, you are incredibly lucky.
George: He does not want to be there, he just has so much work to do. He just sits in a corner and is on his phone.
Crowley: He's that uncle with the mission to talk with everyone. He's always cheerful, can merge into any conversation (even Cassie and Alyss') and shares the gossip within the family. He also organises the family gatherings each year.
Halt: He 'hates' the family gatherings with a burning passion. He secretly does enjoy them, but he's got a reputation to live up to. Pauline knows of this, so she 'drags' him along to every meeting. Once they arrive, Crowley immediately starts talking to him and making him join him on his mission. On some occasions, Halt tries to stop Gil&Will's shenanigans, on other occasions, he helps them with them. Their suspicion towards him is one of his joys at this event.
Jenny: She brought the food. Afterwards she just kind of wanders through the room doing everything and nothing at the same time. Once the dads start to BBQ, she sometimes joins them, bringing them spices and such to improve their food. They don't really use them, saying that the way they've always been making the meat is just fine. Jenny is always a little disappointed by that.
Malcolm: Due to his work, he's only rarely at a family gathering. But when he is, he stations himself at one table and does not stand up until the whole event is over. In ways unknown to the rest of the family, he manages every single time to get to Will abandon his jokes, and sit down with him and listen patiently. Some family members (Halt) have been trying to find out how Malcolm does it for years now, but to no avail.
Erak: He's not part of the family, yet he shows up every year. For a very long time, most didn't even know his name, or what made him show up for the first time at the gathering. After 7 years, Arald randomly says in a conversation that he was the one that made Erak join them. When asked why or from where they knew each other, he responded with: 'From nowhere. He just walked by while Duncan, David, and I were outside at the BBQ. I saw him, offered him a beer, and he joined us. Got no idea where the fella exactly came from, but he's a cool guy, in'he?'

Rangers Apprentice Fantasy Headcanons if John Flanagan Actually Committed to the Bit
Ranger's oakleaf pendants are enchanted by the commander to be a tiny beacon of warmth whenever an apprentice/mentor duo are nearby to each other, and this persists even after the apprenticeship ends. This makes the game of Gilan trying to sneak up on Halt way funnier because the pendant warming is a dead giveaway, and makes Halt giving up his oakleaf to go find Will a much bigger deal because now there's no way to tell if he's getting "warmer" to finding him. When Horace becomes known as the oakleaf knight, his shield is enchanted too because he's basically an honorary brother to will let's be real.
The rule of "The cloak isn't magic, training is everything, trust the cloak" still applies, because they're not perfectly illusory, but they do shift color and pattern throughout the year to match the changing seasons.
Where do the wargals go after Morgarath is killed??? Do they all just die spontaneously? Run off a cliff like lemmings?? Get mass executed by the araluens? No! They've got a tragic history of being semi-intelligent war-slaves. Let me see a few refugee ones make their way to Malcom's camp along with the rest of the "freaks" he takes in, and be given a home, and have Will reconcile his (very valid and traumatic) fears of dealing with them before with the fact that they had no control over the situation back then.
On that note just let Malcom be an honest to the gods sorcerer, he deserves it.
When they're chasing the Kalkara in book 1, they pass through this plain with singing flutes. What's the deal with that?? I think this is a religious practice for a god. We know the Skandians practice a polythestic religion but only get superficial information. I want to know more about the rest of the world and I want Details Please and Thank You. A singing shrine for local spirits is such a cool worldbuilding concept that is left totally unexplored.
The ranger horses can still be a special breed that Halt stole from the Arridi, but they're semi-intelligent mythical creatures in their own right with a history full of lore. Give them a better reason for their mannerisms beyond just "good training". Every once and a while Tug pulls out some whacky power and Will's like "HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING THAT ONE." This is already canon.
It's been a while since I read books 5 and 6 where Alyss got kindapped that one time, but I vaguely remember there was this one hypnotizing jewel. She takes that idea and brings it back to the diplomats to research, refine, reproduce, and use. They start wearing them as necklaces to subconsciously influence the people they're talking to to agree with them on diplomatic missions. Lady Pauline strikes me as the type of person to not shy away from a little harmless mind control. After all she married Halt "forging a king's seal is totally ok" O'Carrick so the moral compass is. A bit wobbly.
Jenny's cooking position is also a secret potioneering apprenticeship and she send Gilan off with tons of healing potions because she worries about him coming home safe. After hearing about what happens to Will in Skandia, and what happens to Halt in Halt's Peril, she makes it her life's mission to develop antidotes to warmweed and other addictive/poisonous substances so that no one has to suffer those withdrawl effects and symptoms again.
Morgarath had a fancy enchanted necromancer sword that he used in the battle, and when Horace uses the double knife defense to block and kill him, the power translates to those two daggers. He doesn't use them ever, but carries them with him in case he's ever really. REALLY. desperate and also because he doesn't trust anyone else to keep them. Eventually, he gives one to Evelyn/Cassandra so she can keep herself safe in case of emergency and then they have cute evil matching couple knives <3

Day 7 of drawing the hottest ranger every day:
Since this is the last day of my little TRR Will appreciation week, I wanted to draw something special and let you all in on an opinion of mine.
I think Will had a beard during his marriage with Alyss.
Now I'm not going to go too into detail about Will's character, how some people seem to infantilize him or how his 30s largely get forgotten by the fandom because I actually want to dedicate a huge masterpost on all of these later. Not anytime soon, because I don't have that much free time, but ideally it would be me going over and analyzing Will's character progression throughout the entire series and presenting some arguments against common (what I believe to be) misconceptions on how he is portrayed in TRR.
For now though, I'll just talk about the beard directly.
After the prologue where we see Will on his revenge mission, the first time we are actually introduced to him is in his cabin when Halt and Gilan are there to talk to him about Maddie. This is the first time we actually learn about how Will looks in detail.
Now that he mentioned the fact, Halt noticed that his clothes were crumpled and stained and his hair and beard were long and uncut,
Will's depression leaves him "messy", both his house and his physical appearance not cared for. He doesn't care about daily tasks anymore, he just wants to see the killers of his wife behind bars. It's probably the only thing getting him to get out of bed everyday because have no doubt that this is a coping mechanism. After seeing him probably for the first time in months, Halt realizes that his hair and beard are both long and uncut.
Notice how this doesn't say anything about Will growing his beard out recently? Hell, I'd say its proof that Will's beard isn't new. Halt isn't suprised that Will has a beard, he is suprised at the lack of care he shows for himself. Will's hair is long and uncut too, did he grow out depression hair from scratch??
I think what most people forget when they read TRR is that at minimum 15 years have passed since Will and Alyss' wedding. Both of them had around 13 years to grow and mature and we as an audience don't see them during their 30s at all.
I think most of the traits people attribute to TRR Will believing they are a result of his loss of Alyss, are just signs of him maturing. People are NOT the same in their 20s and 40s, and they shouldn't be. Everyone reading this post has the right to shoot me point blank in 20 years if I'm the exact same person I am now.
Will, after his initial and very understandable period of depression, earns a lot of the traits he used to be associated with during his younger years back. He starts laughing again, he starts to make bad jokes, he allows the people he loves back into his life and learns to move on. He also still has a beard.
The point I'm trying to make here is that even if Alyss hadn't died, Will would still be closer to what we have in TRR now compared to the main series. Because he shouldn't be the same Will. He is a grown ass man in his 40s, while some traits like his high energy and joking personality will stay with him for the rest of his life they will be filtered down. They should be. That's what maturing does to a person and 30s are the prime age for this.
Going back to the beard, Will has no reason not to have one. It suits his personality, Will doesn't care too highly for his looks and likely wouldn't bother to shave daily. All the men around him had beards as he grew up, including his father figure, and he has no reason to not follow the same pattern. Beards are also very common for the time period we're speaking about.
Is the beard used by Flanagan as a simple plot point to show him aging? Absolutely. But it's really not tied to his depression as heavily as people think. The reason he becomes dark and grim for 2 years before learning to enjoy life again is the same reason his beard is unruly and not taken care of before becoming better shaven. Will, even if at the lowest point of his life, is still Will. He has a beard because he wants one, not because he is depressed. And I believe it makes the most sense for him to start growing his beard out during his marriage mainly because of the fact that there is no reason for him not to.
Howls you just talked to me about why Will has a beard while married to Alyss for 4 hours, why does he have just stubble in the drawing then? Easy, artistic choices. It's easier to separate Will in his 30s than Will in his 40s by giving him different facial hair. That's it. It's a bit of a cheap narrative device but it's also realistic and fitting for his character.
Will had a beard during his late 30s with Alyss and that's it, that's the post.

Into the Halloween spirit! Time for some Rangers Apprentice Modern AU Halloween Headcanons:
Gilan: Really wanted to go trick or treating. At first Halt wouldn't let him go but then Gilan annoyed and pissed him off so much by asking over and over again and whining that Halt basically begged him to go trick or treating in the end just so he would leave the house. Gilan knows all the best houses and the best techniques to getting the most treats somehow always had the best costumes. Nobody knows where he gets them from. He just shows up wearing them. Brings a pillow case.
Will: Will also asked Halt if he could go trick or treating. After remembering how annoying Gilan could be Halt gave up pretty quickly and just let Will go. When he got "too old to go trick or treating" he kept trying to go with other little kids, pretending to be a baby sitter/supervisor, but in reality he just wanted to have fun.
Crowley: Will decorate everything spookily and has a wide variety of lollies to give out to the kids. Still keeps some for himself. Compliments all the younger kids on the costumes and says that they look "very scary". The entire neighbourhood loves him. He had the best decorations. Each year he had to buy more bags of lollies since everyone comes to him first and runs out very fast.
Halt: Doesn't do much. He only likes it for the scary stuff. He uses it as an excuse to watch horror movies with Crowley. And an excuse to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas. Once Crowley's done with all the kids he basically drags him into the lounge and watches It and other horror movies with him. Also Coraline because why not.
Alyss, Horace, Jenny and George: Go trick or treating with Will. Jenny makes treats and spooky biscuits for everyone. George suprisingly doesn't get that scared by horror and scary things and researches a lot of old horror stories to tell everyone while they are walking around the streets from house to house. Horace calls everyone weak for feeling sick from eating lollies. Alyss. She's just kinda there. I honestly don't know anything that she could do.
Arald: Throws one of the biggest Halloween parties for the adults, and any other kids who didn't go trick or treating. He plays songs like Monster Mash.
Pauline: Gives treats out as well but not as much. She's the type of person who only gives out one or two lollies to each kids, unlike Crowley who gives them like two handfuls. Sometimes raises her voice slightly so the kids won't overhear the screams and gore coming from whatever movie Halts watching.

A list of prompts for the Autistic!Halt fic fest!
Feel free to use as many as you like! These prompts are NOT exclusive, so don't worry about any prompts being "taken" <3
Halt shutdown/meltdown, Will's reaction
Halt's interest is mythology and folklore.
He is good in languages and likes to learn them. But since he struggles with social skills, he doesn't speak as much as he would like to.
He loves animals.
He never worried about his behaviour until he hears castle staff whispering he's fae-kissed. He's read enough to know what they mean and he starts to mask.
He has sensory issues with clothes, food and weather (warm/cold). He also doesn't like it to be touched, though from some persons he allows it (e.g. Caitlyn can hug him).
He stims only around Caitlyn. With everyone else he masks
He loves to read and can get lost into it if not told to stop.
Aside from Caitlyn, Pritchard is the only one who knows about Halt's autism. He figured it out when Halt had a meltdown.
When he got apprentices, Halt spent lots of time in his room to prevent getting overwhelmed. Gilan and Will rather thought he was mad at them. Halt never told them, until they asked about it. Gilan learned about his autism when he was in his second year, Will only learned about it when he was about to finish his apprenticeship.
Halt has a special interest in flowers in his early years. In his older years, they’re not a special interest anymore but he holds a certain fondness for them. What’s his favorite type of flower? How does his bio family react vs. how his found family reacts? (I was going to put examples but the ideas were from other posts. Like how Caitlyn made a book of flowers for him, flower crowns, the possibility that he picks out flowers based on their meaning for certain situations…)
I can see Halt having alexithymia. So, how would that impact himself and his relationships? (Example from an article by Jessica Penot, who is autistic/has alexithymia, “I overcompensate by being a compulsive caretaker in relationships but have no idea how to let people into my inner world or explain it.” Also he might have trouble with telling how serious an injury on his person is until someone else notices).
Masking (well, attempting to mask) by copying his brother—
(Kind of related) practicing different expressions in the mirror with his brother’s/mother’s/father’s urging
Learning to unmask :’)
Abelard helping Halt with sensory issues/calming down.
A category 5 autism event happens and Halt ends up infodumping about his special interest to someone he feels safe with
An abrupt change of plans. No time to transition. Halt somehow has to hold it together for the next several hours

Do you ever think how Gilan is portrayed as the love of girls and crush of all of us in the fandom but it is actually Will who is the canon love of ladies? Like Gilan canonically has ONE girl interested in him. Will pulled literally the whole girl population in the books. Alyss, Evanlyn, Erak's niece, Delia, like bro really has the pull. The only character that has more than one Canon person interested in him is Halt. CROWLEY IS SO IN LOVE IDC. Like father like son

Yea okay I’m gonna do the Dutch school niveau thingy
(If you don’t want the explanation, go to the green text. It starts there-)
Let’s start with what what means and Dutch people. Please help me with Mavo and vmbo. I rarely interact with them and don’t really know-
So, is dutch people normally go to a primary school for about 8 years. We’ll get tests and at the end a Cito toets. Then they give us an advice.
If it is a little in between (een twijfel geval) we get a mix. For example, I have Havo/vwo and a friend of mine has Havo/mavo.
We have different levels amd different kinds of names for those levels. (If I can’t explain it, I am sorry-)
Vwo- vwo is the highest you can get. This prepares you for the university. It lasts 6 years in total
Havo- Havo is, in my experience, a bit easier than vwo. You can also get onto university with this. This lasts 5 years
Mavo- im pretty sure you can also get into the university with mavo. This lasts 4 years
Vmbo- vmbo is the lowest and you mainly get physical lessons. Like baking, taking care of animals, ect. This also lasts 4 years
(listen, I don’t know shit about this vmbo and had to redo this post like 10 times already. I’m sorry😭-)
Also, these are just the things my school has, so if I missed any, PLEASE CORRECT ME
There are also a few special classes.
Tto- tto stand for ‘twee talig onderwijs’ or in English, bilingual education. Most of the lessons with this are in English and you sometimes travel to another country. There are also exchange programs. Sadly tto is only for Havo and vwo
Sport klas- sport klas is for sporty people. Sometimes the second years prepare sport days for the school. They also get to skip lessons some times to do the sport
Kunst breed- kunst breed is with art. In my school, every Friday the people who filled in the papers for this go to the ACD classroom and make art.
Now finally onto what I think the people would do:
Will: probably Havo or mavo/havo. He might do sport klas but I’m not sure
Horace: mavo sport klas. Listen, this man is pretty good at grammar and begrijpend lezen. He seems like a person to be very good in Dutch if he was dutch
Crowley: havo/vwo tto. If I can do it, this guy can do it too.
Halt: also havo/vwo tto. But I feel like he’d also do kubstbreed
Alyss: vwo tto. Do I even need to explain??
Pauline: vwo. Really liked languages
Arald: mavo and I feel like he and Rodney really liked medieval history. Because you know, knights and sword fights
Rodney: mavo sportklas
Jenny: Vmbo. She is really, really, REALLY good at the cooking and likes to do things with her hands
George: vwo tto. He’s good at languages. Really good. (Please give me your skills, George)
Gilan: he either has like havo/vwo or vmbo. I cannot decide. But of course he does sportklas

7 for Stan, 12 for Ford, 1 for Mabel, 2 for Dipper; 9 for Chara, 10 for Berlyne, 18 for Apen, 6 for Idony; and then (let's hope a quick scroll got character names for Jade Torch right) 14 for Lune, 13 for Gabryl, 24 for Kennyth, and 4 for Soni, please?
It took me a while to get to this but I will attempt to reply now!
And so many fun fandoms! I'm tagging @dragonanne since there are Jade Torch characters here hehe
Stan: 7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
Hmmm, I'm not sure if it's 100% a *fandom* thing but like, I really do love all of the protective Stan things, especially when he's protecting Ford. Gotta love protective siblings! 👏
Ford: 12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Oooo, there are probably a LOT, but one that's I've been wanting to write about is the headcanon that Ford tries to get Stan to like...be healthier after the show. Like, exercise more, eat healthier, all of that. Of course, Stan is annoyed by it, but it's because Ford knows they already lost so much time with his brother and he wants to have as much time with him as possible 🥹
Mabel: 1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
Mabel! I mean, there are so many reasons to like her tbh. I think for me, I really just love her energy and excitement for life. She's just so fun, and she also makes me laugh so much, maybe even more than any of the other characters 😂
Dipper: 2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
Oh canon thing...I mean, you gotta love his care for Mabel. Just that sibling love and support makes me so happy! And his nerdiness of course, gotta love an excited nerd haha
Chara: 9. Could you be roommates with this character?
Oh man...I...genuinely do not know tbh...I feel like maybe? I've really only shared a room with my sister and as I've gotten older I've had a harder time sharing sleeping spaces with anyone beside family so...???
Berlyne: 10. Could you be best friends with this character?
Oooo...I'd like to think so? I mean, I think we definitely have differences in personality, but I feel like I could understand her enough to be friends at least?
Apen: 18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
It's funny cause I had one gut reaction, then it changed...I think I might have to go with him and Bay? Like, even when Apen was little, he didn't antagonize Bay, and he seemed genuinely concerned about him. And even as he got older, he has never hated Bay (and Bay's care and concern (or maybe some guilt?) for Apen in Gallitan is just...😭)
Idony: 6. What's something you have in common with this character?
Oh hmmm...I mean, I feel like she cares a lot about people and I relate to that quite a bit 🥲
Lune: 14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
Haha this is funny because I just saw a modern drawing of her, so I'm thinking of that now lol. I feel like...green tank tops with maybe a leather jacket and black pants (probably some more stretchy material so she can fight in them haha)
Gabryl: 13. What's an emoji, an emoticon and/or any symbol that reminds you of this character or you think the character would use a lot?
Oooo...honestly...I'm thinking the 🥲 Just...for me, I love him but I also get emo about him...but also like...in a good way? If he used emojis....eh...maybe just the generic smile? :)
Kenneth: 24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
I had a hard time with this haha...but I feel like I just settled on a mix of Kai from Lunar Chronicles and Gilan from Ranger's Apprentice? (though Gabryl reminders me of Kai too haha)
Soni: 4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
....is it bad I want to say my book idea that I haven't written yet? It has dragons and it would be fun if Soni could interact with my dragons haha 😂

His Worst Nightmare
Chapter Six
Lady Pauline was not a violent woman. She knew that words held more power than fists and that the pen was mightier than the sword. She truly believed that there was never a problem that couldn’t be avoided with diplomacy if properly addressed.
She was also sixty seconds away from throwing Halt into a moat.
“Tell me what happened O’Carrick or I swear to god I will make you regret ever meeting me!” Pauline’s hands twitched at her side, desperately wanted to run her hand through her hair in frustration. But she resisted. The carefully pin coils had taken the better part of an hour and it was not yet midday. She still had several meetings that she had to look somewhat presentable for.
“Leave it be Pauline. I don’t know how many times I have to say it!” Halt shouted. Before this week, he had never shouted at her. Now it seemed as though all he did was yell. Or cry, but he tried to pretend otherwise. The first couple days after Halt had moved into Redmont, he had been a silent shadow of himself. He hadn’t said a word about what prompted the move. Even now, all he ever said was that he wished to be left alone. But Pauline refused. She knew something bad had happened. Something horrific. Something that kept Halt awake each night if the purple bruises below his eyes were any indication. She had tried everything she could think of. She had been gentle. Reassuring. Kind. She had used every tactic to open communication she had been taught. She had been empathetic and supportive and patient. And now, she was being angry and pushy.
“Halt, please. You can’t just bottle this up like you try to do with every other emotion you have. This secret is killing you, and I for one refuse to watch it consume you.”
“Go away.” He growled
“Not happening.” She matched his tone.
There was a knock at the door and a familiar head of flaming hair appeared in the doorway. Pauline sighed in relief. “Finally, my reinforcements have arrived.”
“Lady Pauline, always a pleasure.” Crowley smiled before walking over to Halt. He crouched down in front of him so Halt was forced to look down into his eyes. “So, want to tell me what’s happened?”
“Go back to Castle Araluen Crowley.”
“That’s not happening until we get you sorted out. Now, if you won’t tell me as your friend, then you’ll have to tell me as your Commandant.”
“I resign.”
“I deny your resignation.”
“Crowley-“
“Pauline,” Crowley interrupts without breaking eye contact with Halt, “would you be dear and fetch Will? I’m afraid he’s the only other person who might be able to snake the story out of Halt and get him sorted.”
“No!” Halt leapt to his feet, eyes wide. “Leave him be.” The was a frantic note of panic in his voice and Pauline and Crowley shared a look. They had finally found the pressure point to lean on.
Crowley rose beside him, “Why? According to Gilan you said he’s hurt. Though it can’t be that bad since you’ve locked yourself in this room rather than helping Horace and Gilan take care of it. I’m sure he’s perfectly capable of making his way across town to come visit.”
“He’s not. He needs rest, not you two badgering him.”
“Will’s a sweet boy, he’ll be more than happy to check on you. He wouldn’t want you to be this upset, not if he can help.” Pauline reach out towards the door, but Halt lunged past her, slamming the door shut.
“Please, don’t bother him. Please.”
“Why not Halt? What’s happened to him? Why aren’t you with him?” Crowley’s voice was firm and authoritative.
“It’s my fault.” Halt’s resolve crumbled away with the words, the fight and anger leaving his body, replaced with waves of guilt. “I’m the one who hurt him.”
Pauline took his arm and gently steered them to the sofa. Crowley joined them and placed a hand on Halt’s shoulder. “Start at the beginning Halt. Tell us everything.”
And with a heavy sigh, he did. He spends the next hour describing every gruesome detail, unwilling to leave anything out, to minimize the roll he played in Will’s torture. He finishes with his letter to Horace and Will’s reaction to him once he finally came to. Fat tears ran down Crowley and Pauline’s faces, for Will condition of course, but also for the pain and guilt Halt carried.
“It’s not your fault.” Pauline grasped Halt’s hand in hers.
“Of course it is.” He pulled his hand away from her, clenching it into a fist. “I’m the one who hurt him. I’m the one he’s afraid of.”
Crowley began to protest but Halt cut him off. “And don’t say that it’s not my fault because I was forced. I’m the reason we were in that position to begin with. The man was after me. He wanted me to suffer, Will was just the means that he chose to do so. Time and time again Will has been hurt because of me, or because of the Corps. I should never have gotten involved in his life. Look at where it’s lead him.”
“Halt, Will chose to become a ranger. He put the work in, he fought for it. It’s what he wanted. He wasn’t forced into this life, and he certainly didn’t go in blind. Will is brave and has always wanted a life of adventure, if not with the rangers, then with the knights. Don’t discredit Will by pretending he wasn’t in control of his choices.” Crowley said firmly.
“And as for the matter of him being better off without your involvement,” Pauline added, “don’t forget how you found him. Orphaned, alone and scared. You provided with him sanctuary. You gave him a family. You saved him from a life as a nameless field worker and gave him a purpose. Don’t you dare wish all that away from him.”
“I don’t know how to fix this.” Halt admitted quietly.
“This isn’t something that can just be fixed. What’s done is done, the only thing we can do is support Will in anyway we can.” Pauline says. “And I promise that avoiding Will like he’s a leper isn’t supporting him.”
“We are all going to visit him first thing tomorrow. And I’m going to see if Rodney has any advice. He’s got more experience dealing with these type of injuries than I do.” Crowley stood, grateful to have a clear course of action.
Halt gives voice to his greatest fear. “What if he doesn’t want to see me? If he’s scared of me?”
“Then we try again the next day. And every day, until he’s ready to start mending the bond between you.” Pauline kisses Halt on the cheek. “Try to get some rest dear. We’ll be by in the morning.”
Once he was alone again, Halt moved towards the window and stared out to the forest’s edge, where he knew his little cabin stood, containing the most valuable thing in his life. Please give me chance Will. Please let me make this right.

i feel like gilan would totally be left handed.
like, during a battle or whatever, he whips out is sword and the other person screams in agony:
“oH GORLOG HE’S LEFT HANDED!”
it would also drive the ranger corps crazy because he’s the only one who needs/uses left handed equipment.

Reasons why I personally don't like Will's beard:
He's still 15 in my mind, and 15-year-olds don't have beards
He's everyone's little brother, and those don't have beards either
Who did they use on all those undercover missions after Will forcefully murdered his "innocent baby-face"? Liam?? too bad, he's dead anyway (justice for Liam, honestly, he deserved more screen time 😭)
I can handle Will having a few grey hairs on his head (because the man's in his 40's, and he probably feels like he's 72) but him having "fully grey" hair and a "fully grey" beard is just too much. I can't tolerate that
I. Miss. The. Innocent. Will. Era. He was the main character, and his whole demeanor showcased that. Like there was no mistaking what his role was in the series. Ok, now I UNDERSTAND that TRR is a new series and Maddie is the new main character, but that doesn't mean I can't miss the old days. The old days when Will didn't have a beard
He was so precious. So innocent you just wanted to wrap him in a hug and give him a therapy plant. Bearded-Will doesn't deserve a therapy plant. He can cry in his beard.
I simply like the RA books better than TRR books, and I'm blaming that on his beard.
it makes him seem older than he is. like I said before, he's in his 40s; he's not that old. but every time Flanagan uses the phrase "the grey-bearded ranger," I second guess myself on whether it's Halt or Will now
I understand that Flanagan was trying to get Will to mirror Halt in the first book, and I love that prompt, but personally, no. I disagree. Will and Halt's personalities are VERY different. Halt was always the grumpy old man, and Will was always the one to see the light at the end of the tunnel. And yes, grief can do weird shit to your brain, but it wouldn't alter his whole personality like that ... and once again, I'm blaming the beard.
Will wrote "greybeard Halt" He wouldn't ever risk himself being subjected to something similar
I'm pretty sure he only grew it because he was too tired to shave, which, you know, is understandable. However, that means he didn't have a beard during his marriage, which most likely means Alyss didn't want him to grow one in the first place. Sooo therefore, the beard is disrespectful to his dead wife 💅
Horace doesn't have a beard. Gilan doesn't have a beard. Why doesn't Will stick with the memo?
I remember Will being described once as having dimples?? Like sir, why would you cover such a rare blessing?
And finally, no one likes it. Like, bro, just shave. It's what the people want.

How I imagine Ranger's Apprentice Characters in Ikea™
Gilan: He would most certainly fall asleep on one of these display beds. If he's not doing that, he will open all of the drawers to check what Ikea decided to display on the inside. Or he climbs on furniture.
Alyss: She came to shop furniture but lost track of time in the decor section and has to rush through the rest before the Ikea closes. She doesn't buy any furniture.
Cassie & Will: They do similar things to Gilan, but start making bets on it too (i. e. 'I can throw this Dungelskog brownbear further than you'). The loser has to buy the other person the ugliest item they can find. Gilan occasionally joins their shenanigans.
Horace: He entered the Ikea restaurant and was never seen again
Jenny & George: They're trying to pronounce the names of all the furniture they see but accidentally end up offending the old norse gods, causing some severe natural catastrophes.
Halt: Already done with everybody before they even entered the Ikea, he just rushes past all the displays straight into the storage. Because it smells so nice like wood in there.
Pauline: The one that actually has a plan. She strides into Ikea like she's a queen about to enter a battle. She's got the measurements for the furniture, uses Cassie & Will's betting games to make them fetch things for her, has Gilan check out the comfort of everything while having Halt on call to already collect what they want to buy in the storage and correcting George and Jenny's pronunciation. Obviously, she also bought furniture for Alyss.
Arald: For the life of him, he doesn't know why he joined the group. But he enjoys the hurlyburly. He also buys a lot of Ikea plushies. Honestly, good for him.

Ranger's Apprentice AU where the banishment wasn't just for a year and this changes surprisingly little about the third and fourth books until very near the end (apart from Horace having more stress and Halt having more internal angst).
Halt literally does not tell Will until they're on the ship back to Araluen; even then, an increasingly worried Horace needs to push him into it
Halt A) refuses to explain it properly, meaning Will is just baffled by the idea of Halt committing treason, and B) moves straight into discussing how this will or won't affect Will's life. He can still go back, and is definitely still part of the Corps, and Halt is 95% sure Crowley will approve Gilan as his new mentor if they ask...
Will has a rare instance of completely losing his temper at Halt in a teenage explosion, ending in a shouted "DO YOU EVEN WANT ME??" as he stomps away
(Yes, at least half the ship heard this. It's fine, it's fine. There are no secrets aboard longships anyway, there isn't room for them)
Will unloads the whole thing to Horace and Cassandra, about how Halt is just planning on passing him off to somebody else now he's rescued and he didn't even tell him and why?? why is any of this happening???
Genuinely, the boy is Very Upset
Horace is not experienced in personal mediation but he is qualified to point out "Um, Halt really hates being banished, he probably doesn't want to inflict it on you too because it's a bad thing"
He also explains the actual story behind Halt getting himself banished, which helps a bit
Cassandra has to process the banishment bit but is more taken aback by the second revelation that Will wants to follow Halt into banishment and Leave Araluen Forever
It's like a domino effect of abandonment issues!!
But because she's shocked, she actually says what she's thinking, which means the boys are able to explain that well yeah, Will doesn't want to leave Halt, would you want to be separated from your dad forever right after getting him back?
She's like "...oh"
The process of drawing that parallel is helpful for everyone concerned, actually
Anyway, Will calms down and goes off to have another talk with Halt (who is ALSO not happy because now he might have to say goodbye to Will forever WHILE Will is MAD AT HIM). Halt explains he wants Will by his side but more he wants what's best for him, and wandering the face of the earth is Not It. Will counters that he'd lose more by losing Halt than by leaving the Corps, which... is a lot for Halt to process, but was also almost exactly Halt's train of thought last book, so it's not like he can just shut it down.
They go back and forth some more but ultimately agree Will is going to stay with Halt. I don't know if Familial Words are actually used but honestly I think they are, because "you're my DAD" is the only context in which this decision makes total sense and they both know that.
Of course, Cassandra has been setting up a counter-scheme with Erak's collusion this whole time, so when they dock in Araluen Erak immediately asks Duncan for the lifting of Halt's banishment as a Formal Diplomatic Boon.
Emergency over, return to your homes, eucatastrophe all round! Will and Halt are just left with the established fact that they would have gone into banishment together if circumstances required it.
Also Cassandra and Will separate on somewhat better terms because she knows how much he wants to go home to his cabin. (Although Will's class issues are definitely still a thing.)

modern headcanons… duh
Will and Alyss would have mr. and mrs. mugs. horace and cassandra gifted them and it started as a joke but now they use them unironically all the time.
the ranger corps has no specific uniform. except for the matching t-shirts with their respective number that Crowley makes them wear every gathering.
speaking of, sometimes Crowley will call out a number of the ranger he wants to talk to but the rangers switch shirts sometimes which throws Crowley off of his game and stuff gets even more chaotic.
the gang is on vacation. and there’s a street artist playing Budapest. Will and Alyss kinda unconsciously stop to watch and listen, moving along with the music. when the gang realised they lost them, they turn around and see them dancing. a whole group forms a circle around them to watch and when the music ends, only then does Will realise and he starts blushing. Halt tips the musician and the group continues their walk.
George’s hobby is photography and he constantly takes pictures of his friends etc without them noticing.
Gilan is a “i hate brussels sprouts” type of person.
Gilan is also the type of person who gets car sickness but doesn’t listen to Halt’s advice regarding that.
Alyss won’t eat seafoods. Just- no.
Will was in his high school’s musical group.
Cassandra has an instagram page called “things we think but cannot say out loud”, which offers exactly the type of content you’d expect. She has several thousands of followers.
