Each day it's possible to hear the birds singing that little bit louder and with more enthusiasm as it warms up around here. And that leads me to starting thinking of the beach. Sadly as Pixie my foster dog is a terrible traveller, I'll not be able to go to my favourite local beach anytime soon, but I do get to play with my finds stacked up in the studio. Here's a recent listing in my Etsy shop - a rock pool pendant I made from a limpet ring and featuring bright pink and dark purple seaweed and pretty micro shells encased in eco-friendly resin. Available at The Creaking Door. . . . #limpetring #limpetshellnecklace #rockpools #rockpoolpendant #limpetshell #ecofriendlyjewelry #sustainablejewelry #pressedseaweed #periwinkle #clamshell #urchinshell #ecofriendlyresin #britishbeaches #seaweed #seaweedart #beachnecklace #surfnecklace https://www.instagram.com/p/CqBFkdfoLZ8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Flash Memoir #35_The Shell Around the Corner It was another fine sunny day in South Maui, and, despite the broken coral chunks biting into my knobby 10-year-old knees, I pushed on in my fervent search. I was on one of the rocky outcroppings of Ulua Beach and far out of sight of the rest of my family back at Keawakapu. In those early days on the island, we went to the beach together--the happily beached mom, the just-retired dad, and seven kids. We were pretty serious shell seekers. We'd sometimes use handheld fishing nets to tote heavy loads of sand, rock, and coral from the shore break up onto the wide golden sands so we could pluck out any lucky finds. We often brought home treasure troves of cowries, conch shells, puka shells, augers, and even fragile whole urchinshells. That day, I'd wandered farther than usual as if propelled by some premonition of a great find. So was I surprised when I pulled a cowry from the rubble, one that was bigger than my fist?  I remember elation, but also sense of confirmation. I knew it! I knew there'd be a big shell out there, around the corner! Last weekend, I was on the East Side of O'ahu, again on my knees, this time in the soft white sands of Waimanalo. Once again, I was fervently collecting. This time, though, I didn't have to look far at all for I was collecting plastic detritus, not shells. I barely had to move to fill my cupped palm over and over again. Oddly enough, though the plastic pollution is a tragedy, I felt almost the same emotion as I did when searching for shells in my childhood--an eagerness, a purpose, and even a sense of triumph:  "Look how much plastic I cleared--no turtle will ever eat this!"  Somehow this gives me hope. Perhaps, whether we're seeking nature's beauty or seeking to preserve it, we'll be drawn around that next corner, driven by an inner knowing, toward a moment of confirmation and triumph. And maybe that voice is saying over the din of tragic headlines: "We can do it. We just can't give up and we can't despair. Onward, around the next cormer!"  Photo: The very cowrie I found that day so long ago, sitting abed two hours worth of plastic cleanup.  https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq09YdRnugVGF9DavyeQhHyKK0mDZ43j1tjI8w0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=tp5wsg4z07kz
