I get when non vegans say that veganism is expensive its usually in bad faith and misinformation. rarely is it a genuine statement BUT
can we not pretend that everyone is happy giving up alternatives due to price? (happy as in not practical)
Because some alternatives ARE more expensive than the original
Basically, i am privileged enough to be able to consume impossible burger and violife cheese and beyond meat jerky and JustEgg and gardein chicken.
i dont need all that but i want it. i like it. it makes me happy just like when i wasn't vegan those types of things made eating fun and enjoyable
obviously it feels nice when im able to eat healthier (and cheaper). but it DOES require more prep than just opening a bag or microwaving or throwing something in the oven
and im able to do both. but my disability changes.
Like i think we need to mention this. And this post isnt to give non vegans a pass on not trying or anything. Always try and find alternatives and have fun with it and all that. trust me if youre able to eating plant based can be exciting (finding out plants can be so many things its just fun)
but if i werent where i was, id still be vegan, but id probably eat less. i wouldnt enjoy it as much. no sour cream for burritos, no butter or mayo. making my own versions from scratch is to much energy. etc
Someone whos not plant based, trying to go plant based a lot of times is going to want the cheese and meat and egg and snacks. but that stuff IS expensive.
and non vegans need to understand that is what expensive. my non expensive meals are healthiest but i need to eat more of, just like in non vegan meals. Because real meat and cheese even when subsidized is expensive
so in all, i know it works in our favor that veganism at its base is not expensive but regardless of genuine concern from non vegans we shouldnt just lie
And we dont we DO say veganism is how expensive you make it but its like sometimes expensive is all someone can be happy and healthy on and thus needs to be recognized
i CAN be both. like pasta. or rice or beans. or roasted vegetables. but rn i est chickn and bee'f burgers and use sour cream on potatoes and burritos and cheese and mayo for sandwhiches
idk. its not about coddeling its about bein real that someone whos a big meat and cheese eater might have a hard time switching if they cant get those alternatives. they should still try and talk to thr community for help
but at the end of the day, yeah its a legitimate argument. not against veganism but just not something we should just leave it as "veganism is as expensive as you make it"
which just comes off...idk the word
but yeah just another one of those things we have to remember bc i know im not the only vegan who likes alternatives even though they are expensice in such a way that giving them up is not practical i guess?
does this make any sense at all. i guess it falls under practicality? idk. discuss!
