{  * unsteady  }
finally, it’s quiet. all he can hear is heavy breathing of his comrades and some grumbling, but clearly human, not the guttural groans of all the creatures slain today; not the clashing of weapons or shouts of pain that come with a fresh wound.
he is afraid to take in the sight of the ballroom. he fears it will remind him too much of the last battlefield he stood on: the casualties, the bodies, the soldiers he could still put a name to even after their death.
he must, though, to make sure those he cares for most are safe, and it hurts to so much as move. he is not quite broken yet, but he is bruised, so much of his body sliced up by the skeletons’ swords and abominations’ claws after hours of fighting. he feels so heavy, so exhausted, and a little sick to his stomach, and he knows part of it is the eye monsters’ dark magic he couldn’t help but absorb a little of throughout the evening.
there are so many bodies, monsters and people alike. he doesn’t know if it’s dark magic that leaves such a large pit in his stomach, or if it’s simply rational dread. he went into today knowing he would be surrounded by familiar faces, most from his past that he would rather not see again, but now he can’t help but wonder if they’re among the corpses littering the ballroom floor.
for as much as he swore he wanted so many of the gleerians to die, he feels no satisfaction when he considers that they might have today. he takes a moment to look up toward the balcony, searching for gleerium’s rat of a king. he doesn’t see him, but he sees some knights acting casually, so he assumes he’s still up there alive and kicking. that’s one man finn wouldn’t mind dying to some abomination today.
he, however, lives to die another day, as always. as always, he stands among the living for reasons unknown to him, but today, he is too tired to question it. maybe it will haunt him in the coming days, but all he knows now is his aching bones and stinging blood, and it’s far too hard to breathe for his liking.
he searches, searches for familiar faces, and somehow, it’s astrea of all people that he finds first. she appears to be in one piece, thankfully; that’s one friend he can count as alive. she’s a skilled healer, too, and he’s surprised she hasn’t busied herself trying to aid those in trouble yet, though he supposes the fighting really has only just died down. maybe she, like him, is still only catching her breath now.
in many ways, he feels guilty seeking her help when there are so many bodies laying on the ground, some which may still live should astrea heal them. she meets his eyes, however, and he drags himself over with a tired smile, because he figures she wouldn’t let him go even if he tried to get away from her.
“i’m okay,” he assures her before she can even say anything. “there are others here that need your help far more than me, so don’t waste your time on me.” i can help you look for survivors, he nearly says, but he doesn’t know if he can. he doesn’t know if he’s strong enough.

hideous, frightening eye monsters called MOGALLS have been spotted IN NOYILLAI. they have rudely interrupted the final day of the lotus festival, crashing through the windows, causing all sorts of damage and destruction in lotus hall. it’s not just lotus hall that is under threat, however; mogalls have sprung up all across noyillai, emerging from the ground and very depths of the underworld itself. they are not just nuisances; they are dangerous. they use DARK MAGIC to fight, and are quick and capable of flight, ensuring even high altitudes are unsafe. they have high resistance, but little defense, making them weak to physical attacks. they are less likely to attack fellow dark magic users, and are especially weak to light magic damage. these mogalls have 23 HP, and it is recommended only characters LEVEL THREE OR ABOVE take them on.
welcome to your second enemy encounter!
these encounters are essentially a mini event. your role here is to write as much (or little) about encountering mogalls as you'd like. this can include your character defending innocent civilians in lotus hall’s ballroom, to working together with a new ally to defeat a mogall, to trying to run away from them themselves. there are plenty of possibilities, and given mogalls are cropping up all across noyillai, you are not only limited to threads taking place at or close to lotus hall. you may also receive submits from this blog related to mogalls during this time, where an official battle may take place.
in order to potentially receive submits, however, you must like this post. by doing so, you give the main permission to have enemies run wild related to your muse, whether in their submit box or relevant threads. it’s important to keep in mind that given official battles can be unpredictable, your character may be injured as well, perhaps severely. choose carefully!
by writing about your character's encounter(s) with mogalls during the given time period, you will level up. we won't reveal your levels until after the enemy encounter's time period ends, but the more you write, the more levels you'll gain. both threads and solos will count, but note that threads will net you more experience, which leads to more leveling up. although it’s recommended those fighting mogalls be level three or above, this does not mean lower level characters cannot fight them. they’ll just likely have a bit more trouble than their higher level counterparts!
this enemy encounter lasts until NOVEMBER 1ST, 11:59 PM EST. please tag all posts related to this enemy encounter as #uf:lotusenemy, and note that after the time period for this enemy encounter ends, the mogall threat may not be entirely dealt with. you may encounter them again later. you can continue all threads after the event ends; you just won't level up from doing so like you will during this time period.
you will also submit everything you write about this encounter to the points blog by the end of NOVEMBER 2ND EST.
submit the following form:

THE LOTUS FESTIVAL: CONCLUSION
"attention, everyone!" the lion councilor kahuzoa announces from the top of the staircase, voice loud and booming, managing to fill the entire ballroom despite its massive size. the music stops immediately, and the bustle below them calms to murmurs. those closest to the staircase look up, giving deyuis's leaders their attention as requested.
"thank you for coming today," kahuzoa continues, proud, albeit close-lipped, smile on his face. "250 years ago today, we all came together to create lotus campus. as you can see, it's stood strong and grown immeasurably since then. it's quite impressive," he chuckles. "of course, this is worthy of celebration! we're glad you could enjoy the festivities."
thegrorthius speaks next: "it certainly is worth celebrating, but it is also worth remembering. many lives were lost in the conflicts before the lotus campus's inception, and we should be grateful for their sacrifices, which served as great inspiration to work together to create noyillai. without these wars and loss of life, there would be no need for the neutral zone, and so something beautiful arose from the violence. may our ancestors look upon us proudly for this accomplishment." he bows his head politely; thoughtfully, and the other leaders are all quiet for a moment. thegrorthius, as old as he is, is inarguably respected by the others, his words always considered carefully, and often heeded.
before long, it is andreas to speak up. "for the first time in centuries, deyuis is at peace. there is no longer any war." he pauses, and it's laurelia that gets the hint and claps enthusiastically. some in the audience follow suit, while others don't. "i am very grateful--"
there's a near deafening shatter, and suddenly, a monster flings itself through the now broken window closest to andreas. it's a grotesque thing: it hovers above the ground, tentacles flowing from behind it, attached to a massive eye.
misu is the one that reacts first, drawing her sword and slicing the creature.
"what the hell is that?" ysmene hollers, drawing her own sword.
just as she does, more of the creatures explode through windows, this time in the ballroom itself. some of the guests scream, and all chaos breaks loose, people trying to escape, the guards on standby trying to fight.
"mogalls," the archsage replies, voice troubled. "we sometimes see them in omaduun."
"their appearances historically have coincided with the use of dangerous dark magic," thegrorthius adds, moving to stand in front of faeryn; he knows from experience, as he was alive among some of the first dark mages in existence.
andreas turns on the archsage. "you did this," he claims, with little room for argument.
"for what reason would i summon mogalls to a celebration like this?" the archsage fires back.
"your people will do anything to sow chaos! you expect me to believe it's a coincidence that you finally show up to a meeting and these things do too?"
"gentlemen!" ysmene loudly interrupts. with her sword in one hand, she motions with her free one to an approaching mogall. "get busy."
it's enough to stop their bickering for now.
"kahuzoa," faeryn says, somehow calmly and urgently at once. she stands with kahuzoa and thegrorthius in front and back of her, protecting her from any oncoming attacks given her inability to fight.
"if you are able to fight," kahuzoa's booming voice echoes through the ballroom once again. "gather your weapons and join us in neutralizing this threat. otherwise, find safety as soon as possible. look to laurelia for guidance."
he then shifts into his lion form and lets out a roar that does little to disturb the mogalls.
"daldona and gleil help us," laurelia mutters under her breath from her place in the chaos on the ballroom floor itself. she raises her voice a mere moment after: "do not exit through the broken windows! you may take shelter in the eastern part of the hall where there are no windows, or use the north and south exits to evacuate. your weapons are being held in rooms by the doors you entered in, sorted in alphabetical order based on what name you gave upon entry. i know everyone is frightened but the entryway to these rooms is small, so please form a line outside the door and move to find your weapons as quickly as possible. we will prevail!"
– ♕ –
well...this really throws a wrench in celebrating lotus campus's 250th anniversary, doesn't it? even though the lotus festival event is technically over, it's also...not quite. that being said, the first part of the event is over, meaning you may no longer level up from or start more festival threads taking place before the mogall attack. you may, however, write about anything mentioned in this post and the events following it that you'd like. more details on that coming up in an additional post!

monsters vaguely resembling reanimated corpses called REVENANTS have been spotted IN NOYILLAI. as if appearing for backup to the mogalls, they come in hordes later in the battle, enclosing on both lotus hall and the areas around it during the final day of the lotus festival. this traveling in packs is partially to make up for their weakness. they move slowly, generally giving fighters paying attention time to run or avoid their attacks. they are durable, however, and hard to down, so it’s important not to get too confident. even the weak have power in numbers, after all. they fight with DANGEROUS CLAWS, and despite their apparent individual weakness, it’s recommended characters LEVEL THREE OR ABOVE take them and their 30 HP on.
Tumblr media
as if matters couldn’t get worse, sentient skeletons called BONEWALKERS have joined the fray IN NOYILLAI. they, too, appear later in the battle in large groups, both in areas all over noyillai and lotus hall itself. like revenants, this traveling in packs is partially to make up for their weakness. unlike their corpse-resembling counterparts, however, they are far faster, able to dodge at nearly the speed of a regular human where many other monsters are quite sluggish. they are physically weak, however, and despite their speed, are seemingly unskilled with their IRON SWORDS, and have a tendency to have inaccurate, weak attacks. while not the strongest enemy fights have probably faced, just like revenants, their true strength comes in the numbers the usually travel in. it’s recommended characters LEVEL THREE OR ABOVE take them and their 21 HP on.
OOC NOTE: it’s time for another enemy encounter!
these encounters are essentially a mini event. your role here is to write as much (or little) about encountering the monsters in this post as you'd like. this can include your character defending innocent civilians in lotus hall’s ballroom, to working together with a new ally to defeat a monster (or multiple), to trying to run away from them themselves. there are plenty of possibilities, and given terrible monsters are cropping up all across noyillai, you are not only limited to threads taking place at or close to lotus hall. you may also receive submits from this blog related to revenants during this time, where an official battle may take place.
in order to potentially receive submits, however, you must like this post. by doing so, you give the main permission to have both revenants and bonewalkers run wild related to your muse, whether in their submit box or relevant threads. it’s important to keep in mind that given official battles can be unpredictable, your character may be injured as well, perhaps severely. choose carefully, and even if you liked the mogall post, you must like this post for potential interactions with the other monsters as well.
by writing about your character's encounter(s) with monsters during the given time period, you will level up. we won't reveal your levels until after the enemy encounter's time period ends, but the more you write, the more levels you'll gain. both threads and solos will count, but note that threads will net you more experience, which leads to more leveling up. although it’s recommended those fighting these monsters be level three or above, this does not mean lower level characters cannot fight them. they’ll just likely have a bit more trouble than their higher level counterparts!
this enemy encounter lasts until NOVEMBER 1ST, 11:59 PM EST, just like the mogall attack. you are free (and encouraged) to write about all three types of monsters during this time. please tag all posts related to this enemy encounter as #uf:lotusenemy as well, and note that after the time period for this enemy encounter ends, the monster threat may not be entirely dealt with. you may encounter them again later. you can continue all threads after the event ends; you just won't level up from doing so like you will during this time period.
you will also submit everything you write about all lotus festival enemy encounters to the points blog by the end of NOVEMBER 2ND EST.
submit the following form:

SOMETHING NEW IS AMISS…
the fight is already tiring, but it continues, the mogall threat seemingly never ending. faeryn still stands on the balcony behind thegrorthius, yet to change into his dragon form, while kahuzoa the mighty lion tears apart any creatures that approach.
“thegrorthius, can you see below us?”
“yes,” he replies with no further elaboration.
“how bad is it?”
“in all of my years, i have learned to recognize a losing battle when i see one. this is not a losing battle.”
the archsage accompanies the laguz on the balcony, hurling orbs of dark magic into the fighting below.
“can you even aim those?” andreas questions, apparently certain the archsage cares little for collateral damage. andreas still stands on the balcony as well, though heavily guarded by his company of knights. they implored him not to involve himself in the fighting. what would we do were the king of gleerium to fall here? he agreed.
“my ability to aim gets worse the more you talk to me,” the archsage quips back.
“please,” faeryn interrupts, a single pleading word putting an end to their fighting.
yumi also looks upon the scene below in silence, but her daughter joined the fray, cutting down creatures alongside queen ysmene. the women stand back to back with their swords drawn, careful not to allow any monsters to approach one another undetected.
“ysmene,” misu suddenly stiffens, gripping her sword a little tighter. “ah–– queen ysmene,” she quickly corrects herself. “there are more.”
“yeah, they won’t stop coming,” ysmene says through gritted teeth and another swing of her sword.
“no, i mean, more,” the princess is at a loss for words, because in front of her is another new and dreadful creature: one resembling a reanimated corpse, but far less human than any lifeless body, some mutated monster.
“what? oh, shit.” ysmene doesn’t even turn around. “more. skeletons?”
“what?” it’s misu’s turn to echo. “no, they have skin–– not human skin, something clearly formed from magic.” misu turns around to look at the sight in front of ysmene, and sure enough, it’s a different monster: bones; a skeleton clutching its own sword.
“turn around!” ysmene orders, and sure enough, when misu turns around, the undead creature is far too close for comfort, standing right in front of her. misu strikes.
“damn it,” the archsage swears from back up on the balcony, temporarily pausing his onslaught of dark magic to take in the new scene below them. the fighters and lingering civilians are starting to see the new creatures wandering in through the windows, and chaos erupts in the ballroom once again.
“what is it?” faeryn questions.
“bonewalkers. revenants,” the archsage responds.
“can’t you just call them off?” andreas asks.
“it doesn’t work like that,” the archsage replies. “they don’t speak, but they show evidence of being sentient. some skilled necromancers can summon them, but only sarlimar himself was said to be able to control them, and that’s just speculation.”
“thegrorthius…” faeryn practically whispers.
“not yet.”
“what?” andreas interrupts, demanding an explanation.
“it’s not a losing battle yet.”
OOC NOTE: more monsters have joined the fray! stay tuned for further explanation from the enemies blog.

{  * defensive assist  }
finn wouldn't say he expected this, but after losing a war he was raised to endure, he tries to prepare for the worst. no, eyeball monsters slamming through the windows of lotus hall's ballroom was not on his list of assumed events, but...it doesn't surprise him as much as it might most people. some of these people are probably cushy nobles that have never known violence a day in their lives, so horrified by the idea of so much as an injury.
finn is used to fighting, so as people flee every which way, his course of action is clear: fight. most people heed laurelia's advice, providing some semblance of order, but it's still mostly chaos, and finn is glad vivian was beside him for the speeches, otherwise he would be among the frantic trying to find her.
sure, he has an employer; he's supposed to be a bodyguard today, so finding her is also urgent, but finn trusts ziyu enough to take care of herself and sorry, but his sister takes priority. finn has few people left in this world, and besides, ziyu already paid him so handsomely that even if he ultimately fails at his job and word gets around that he's a shitty mercenary, he'll be set for long enough to find something else to do.
vivian is top priority. he thinks it's only fair, after the way he abandoned her last year. now that he has his head on straight again he realizes in many ways it's just them; he and vivian against the world, or maybe he's still being too much of a stubborn idiot. many people he lost are self-inflicted; he ran into leila and yura here again as well, and he hopes they'll be fine.
he can't worry about them, though. right now, it's vivian by his side, and he drags her along with him to fetch his weapon so he doesn't lose her, just as much for how tiny she is as anything else.
by the time they return to the ballroom, fully prepared to fight, the mogalls outnumber the fighters. finn hopes the numbers will even out as more people gather their weapons, but it seems even more filter in through the windows every time one is felled.
speak of the devil: one locks it's large eye on vivian, and thankfully, the creature isn't too fast. it summons its dark miasma for a moment before it attacks, so there's a brief time to prepare–– at least long enough for him to step in front of his sister as the creature hurls an orb of dark magic. he doesn't know if blocking would help against the magic, but he only partially gets his sword up in time, and tanks the rest of the hit.
it burns, but just a little. "i'm good," he assures his sister, but that miasma forms around their enemy again. "get ready to dodge."

{  * like old times  }
finn usually expects things to go to shit, because historically, they always do, at least for etlians. somehow, today, however, he wasn't expecting it. he fantasized about someone killing andreas during his speech, and his body toppling off the balcony into the screaming crowd below. better if he could've been the executioner, but alas, it's not meant to be today; instead, the crowd is screaming for a different reason altogether, and finn has far more fighting to do.
he's seen the monsters in some of the textbooks during his schooling, though they came without names, simply under some heading describing the side effects of dark magic, discovered during sarlimar's war, or something like that. it's curious how they turned up here and now, but there will be plenty of time to analyze the events of this evening later. for now, there are people he needs to protect: his sister, for one, and ziyu, who he is supposed to be a bodyguard for. who knew she would need him tonight. maybe it's a good thing she peer pressured him into coming along after all.
he flits from ziyu to vivian, fighting as he must along the way, certain he can assist both of them as needed, trying not to consider the fact that he may leave one or the other at just the wrong time. there is no time for anxiety in battle; only the best he has to offer.
he also tries not to think of last time he was on such a crowded battlefield, and the fact that his best was far from enough back then. maybe this is a chance to redeem himself, or maybe the past doesn't matter at all; not right now.
the past does matter when it comes to leila, though. she's an old fighting partner, and an old friend, and an old victim to the same war, equally devastated and broken from it. she's an archer, and one of the mogalls is far too close to her for finn's comfort, so he grips his sword a little tighter and charges in, quick to put himself in between leila and the monster. the creature tries to attack, but finn parries it, most of its orb of dark magic colliding with his sword and then fading away. he can feel it, though; some of that dark magic sinking into his bones, but the feeling isn't too intense. so he can't block all of it, but blocking it helps. good to know.
"leila, if you can't get up to the balcony there's some rubble that might be good enough cover near the back wall of the ballroom." he jerks his head in the direction he means, because those probably aren't the clearest directions. "i can cover for you." hopefully most of her anger toward him has faded now, or at the very least, she can set it aside in this time of crisis.

THE LOTUS FESTIVAL CONCLUSION
after the dust settles, lotus hall is a shell of its old self. the glass of its once magnificent windows lays in pieces, debris and destruction everywhere, carcasses of both monsters and people alike scattered across the floor of the ballroom, exhausted fighters still lingering. nevertheless, it is quiet; the screaming faded, the sound of fighting now gone.
it is almost peaceful, but peaceful like the aftermath of a war: the grief, the need to rebuild.
laurelia falls to her knees in the center of the ballroom, exhausted after escorting guests out and trying to defend them herself.
it's faeryn that puts a hand on laurelia's back and sinks to the ground next to her.
"i'm sorry," laurelia whispers.
"why are you sorry?"
"i failed to protect this place. as the guardian of noyillai, i was unable to fulfill my duty. if you must find a replacement for me, i understand."
"laurelia...i must speak with the others to confirm, but please know i will fight for you to maintain your position as long as you wish to keep it. the damage would've been far greater without you."
it's then that the silence around them breaks, giving way to the sound of feet running across the ballroom floor. the leaders all look to the source.
"a ganggyn messenger," princess misu informs the others, once the messenger's form is close enough to distinguish.
faeryn and laurelia stand as the messenger runs by, following in order to hear what she has to say.
finally, the messenger makes it to the end of the hall, and kneels to to leaders, most of them once again standing on the balcony overlooking the devastated hall.
"your highnesses," the messenger begins, short of breath from her long run. "i'm sorry to interrupt, but this is urgent. we know these creatures attacked noyillai, but some have appeared in ganggyn as well."
"how many?" emperor yumi asks.
"unclear. multiple reports, however. several messengers from smaller towns in ganggyn requested help from the army so we have reason to believe it is a country-wide issue, and it gets worse. there are more monsters…skeletons and some that look like reanimated corpses.”
“more?!” kahuzoa exclaims.
the ganggyn messenger nods. “i saw many of them myself on my way here. it seems they travel in packs.”
"is minister dani aware of this?" yumi asks.
"yes, emperor."
"report back and tell her to act as she sees fit for now."
suddenly, a tiger bursts through one of the broken windows, giving everyone in the hall quite a fright.
"haruko, we've spoken about this," thegrorthius sighs. "manners. remember?"
the tiger shifts into his human form immediately, and offers a sheepish smile. "sorry, councilor, but once you hear this you're going to be glad i skipped the formalities and got right down to it. there are big creepy eye monsters in the zoratori alliance-- the same ones that are dead all over the floor here, and there are others too. skeletons and zombie things."
"mogalls, bonewalkers and revenants," the archsage informs him.
"okay. yeah. those."
the leaders of deyuis look to one another.
"we should assume they'll appear in gleerium and podakko as well if they haven't already," ysmene says.
"they'll make their way across the borders eventually at the very least," andreas agrees.
"alright, how about this," ysmene begins. "make sure every town in your country has at least one armed guard in case the monsters attack. ideally more than that. maybe start training more people to fight. deyuis is no longer at war just in time, so let's put those armies to use dealing with this new threat instead of each other, yeah?"
"sounds good to me," kahuzoa replies.
"what are their weaknesses?" ysmene asks, turning to the archsage now.
"we in omaduun have dealt with these creatures for a long time. mogalls fight with dark magic and are less likely to attack others that use it. they are quite resistant to dark and anima magic, but light magic seems to harm them more successfully, as do physical attacks. revenants are easy to injure and quite clumsy, but they are…resilient. bonewalkers’ attacks are weak, but they are quick and more difficult to hit than either of the other creatures. we’ve found that light magic is effective against all of them, actually."
"what do they want?" ysmene questions.
the archsage simply shrugs.
"wow, helpful, thank you very much," she replies sarcastically.
"with all due respect," princess misu speaks up, voice soft. "our people need us...if there's nothing left to discuss, it's probably best we return to them and prepare our defenses."
"very well. may gleil smile upon us," andreas says, bowing his head to the others.
"and may daldona grant us grace," misu replies, bowing back to him.
--
this officially concludes the lotus festival event!
given monsters have begun popping up all over deyuis, you're free to continue writing about encounters with them in any threads going forward, at least until the threat is properly dealt with (if it ever is?) you simply won't level up from doing so the same as you would during an event.
additionally, feel free to incorporate information from this post into your muses' threads and lives. every nation in deyuis will be announcing ysmene's plan and organizing official guards for every town to protect against the monsters. your characters are welcome to be part of this guard, whether they are an official member of their country's army or just a skilled volunteer, because much help will be needed! just remember to contact us first if you'd like to mention an npc in anything you write.
thank you for your participation! though it seems the events of the lotus festival have left us with more questions than answers...
