can i be honest for a sec? i kind of don’t like the david tennant + catherine tate much ado.

truly just personal preference but i hate the direction of the confession scene, it takes all of the gravity and weight out of the previous scene, hero’s humiliation, claudio’s betrayal, beatrice’s anger…. i understand the intention: love is a funny, embarrassing, human thing! but i also think that the tone shift ends up being so jarring and bizarre and ultimately doesn’t work very well with the themes of the text.

anyways everyone go watch the 2019 shakespeare in the park Much Ado it’s on archive.org and it’s FANTASTIC!

#truly my favorite thing about much ado is the way it VERGES on tragedy. if one thing had been different in that story it would have all gone #so very very tragically and i love that it doesn’t! and i love the sudden genre shock in the middle of the text like fuck it’s good #claudio’s rage and beatrice’s ‘kill claudio’ are SOOOO shocking and sobering from the humor and revelry of the rest of the piece and they’re #such a stark difference to the previous scenes. they make you stop and go. oh. he ruined hero’s life on a whim #and beatrice wants him dead for that. and is benedick’s love great enough that he will kill for her? #somebody take me home i’m thinking about the way much ado was very nearly a tragedy again #lu.txt #shakespeare #much ado about nothing
