Summary: Beca and Chloe are happy, for the most part at least. Award shows, fancy restaurants, day outings, the couple do it all. But with their lives so dramatically different from each other, will they be able to move past their problems or will their relationship be over before it's even had a chance?

Notes: I have to be honest I never planned this story to have a sequel, but oh well, here we are. It's gonna be chaotic so I should apologize in advance. This story has become my baby so please be gentle (again).

Busy designing the interior for a new kitchen she would never be able to realistically afford herself, Beca glances up with a lifted brow at Stacie’s loud outburst. Whatever is on her screen is apparently entertaining enough to have her eyes lighting up with amusement. “What?”

“Get over here,” Stacie says, snickering around her lollipop as she motions Beca closer with a wave of her hand.

In response, Beca loudly groans, dropping her phone onto the couch beside her. “Dude, seriously, I don’t need to see any more d-pics.” Regardless, she lazily pushes to her feet, straightening out her wrinkled tank in the process.

“No, it’s not that. Come look at this.”

Curiosity mildly piqued, Beca shuffles over to the kitchen with her bare feet tapping against the messy floor, unruly hair falling with no uniformity over her uncovered shoulders. Sliding in beside Stacie, she squints toward the screen. “You’re looking for hookups on Craigslist now?”

“Maybe,” Stacie shrugs, pulling the lollipop from between her lips to point it toward the screen. “But just read this.”

While she begins to mentally read the Craigslist listing in her head—some kind of advertisement for two twenty-eight year old New York women seeking wedding dates—Beca mutters random syllables under her breath. “Sounds kinda desperate,” Beca frowns.

Although she is not looking at Stacie, she can practically hear the smirk in her tone. “Right, but look whose wedding it is.”

As much as she adores Aubrey—and she does, she really, truly does—she can be a hard pill to swallow for even Chloe sometimes, something it seems Aubrey registers with her next, much softer sigh.

“Look,” Aubrey begins, the defeat heavy in her more somber tone. “I know I’ve been...a little crazy lately, and unfortunately you have taken the brunt of that. I’m just…” she sucks back a slow, centering breath, shadowed lids closing while she evidently attempts to gather herself. “I’m just very stressed, but I know that’s not your fault and that you’re just trying to help, so I really am sorry, Chloe.”

Gaze drifting from the laptop screen to instead meet Aubrey’s sorrow-filled eyes, Chloe responds with a small, sympathetic smile. “It’s okay,” she promises in a softer, more sincere tone of voice. “I get it, I know you’re going through a lot right now.” Her lips pull inward for a short moment as Chloe considers her options. “You’ve had a long day and I’m sure that’s not helping, so why don’t you go lie down for a little while. We can order something super gross and greasy for dinner and watch a movie afterwards. How does that sound?”

Like Chloe, Aubrey takes a second or two to consider, before eventually relenting with a short nod of her head, hands bracing against the arms of the chair. “Okay,” she agrees, steadily pushing herself to her feet. “You’re right. I think a nap would be wise.”

“Totes,” Chloe nods enthusiastically, offering Aubrey more of an encouraging smile this time. “And if you need anything, I’ll just be right out here.”

While still small and somewhat tired looking, a kinder smile precedes Aubrey making a quick departure from their shared living space.

Left alone, the cogs in Chloe’s overly active imagination begin to slowly turn.

The silence to then fall upon the apartment, Chloe will shortly learn, is very much the calm before the storm.

For a whole week now, even as they have meticulously dyed over the colorful streaks in one another’s hair with cheap box dye and spent what little money they have on a small selection of more appropriate clothing, Beca has continued to adamantly protest Stacie’s ridiculous plan.

While Stacie is right, they really do need a vacation—especially a free one—not one part of this seems smart, and Beca grumbles under her breath as they stand outside of the bar neither of them would ever usually be able to afford to even step foot in.

“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this,” she mutters through gritted teeth, reaching down to less than subtly hike her uncomfortable underwear into place.

Their outfits are decidedly very much not them—they both wear dresses, something Beca would usually never be seen dead in, and where they had both previously had colorfully streaked hair, Beca’s is now a simple medium brown color, while Stacie’s is a sleek dark blonde. Without her heavy eyeliner and smoky shadow, Beca feels entirely naked, and frowns at the way her neat curls tickle her upper arms.

“Would you relax?” Stacie chuckles, straightening her black-framed glasses—the lenses a simple prescriptionless glass—over the bridge of her nose. “If we want that free cruise, we’re really gonna have to sell this. Just remember, you’re still a music producer. And no complaining about our crappy apartment.”

“Whatever,” Beca huffs, petulantly folding her arms across her middle.

For the next little while, the four of them engage in casual, friendly conversation, Beca sipping on her water and wishing like hell it was something much stronger. She finds, however, the longer they sit here, the longer Stacie talks the both of them up, the easier it is for her to settle, even if she does feel oddly guilty for lying—acting—the way they are.

“I love this place,” Chloe hums, setting her empty glass down in front of her. “But I always feel like the music is super boring.” She glances toward Beca, the apparent music expert of the group, with an adorably wrinkled nose. “You wanna come check out the jukebox with me, Music Producer? I feel like you’ll find some hidden gems I’d totally end up overlooking.”

“Oh, uh…” While calmed a little, the idea of alone time with Chloe causes Beca’s heart to flutter uncomfortably, though she feels the way Stacie gently nudges her ankle beneath the table and quickly clears her throat. “Yeah, sure. I saw that when we came in, I figured it was just for decoration or something.”

“Oh, no, it definitely works,” Chloe promises, twisting in her seat to smoothly slide to her feet. She straightens out the fabric of her purple dress in the process, then flashes Beca a bright smile. “Coming?”

With all eyes on her, Beca dutifully slips from her stool, then shuffles along in her uncomfortable heels behind Chloe, effectively leaving Aubrey and Stacie alone.
