Let’s Talk About Pokemon - The Deino Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
633: Deino

You know it's the endgame once you see a pseudo-legendary. And boy is this one a cutie! I love this being Pokemon's take on a cave-dwelling dragon, being shaggy-furred and partially blinded by its own goofy little hairdo. Perfect for our Premier Dark/Dragon type. I just love that face. It looks like a muppet. It's the perfect plush Pokemon that unfortunately, I don't think ever got any official plush toy. Oh, and the black, deep dark blue, and magenta-ish purple? Gorgeous color scheme.

Perfect cutie!

And here we see this line's schtick at work. Zweilous grows a second head, which is only twice as much adorable as before. I can dig me a good multi-headed thing, and this is all the fun of that, as the two heads don't get along and are constantly fighting over food and where to go. And that's just great. My only gripe is that there should be just a smidge more purple. But other than that, it's great. I also like how the thing grew wings, but they clearly don’t work. Why so, since I would otherwise call that an extraneous detail that should’ve been cut out? I simply like it because it looks like an evolutionary leftover in a way! Could say it uses them more like feelers to navigate the dark caves it lives in!

Very nice. But...

635: Hydreigon

Ugh.
Well, if we’re talking Gen 1 parallels, I guess it’s only fitting Hydreigon is a letdown. Though, it doesn’t fall nearly as hard as Dragonite does.
I can't help but feel like all of the lovable parts of Deino and Zweilous just got thrown out so they could make just yet another dragon that's not that unique. Its eyes are exposed, it's got a more generic “cool dragon” head now. It's kinda stopped making sense as a cave dragon now too. I liked how Zweilous had little wing nubs that didn't function as wings anymore. And while that's maybe continued here, those wings look so unfunctional I have a hard time suspending my sense of disbelief enough to believe that thing could ever lift itself off the ground with them. And yet, they're what lifts it off the ground. What would a cave-dwelling dragon need with the ability to fly anyways?!
That and the way its overall body turned out doesn't make sense to me. It's one thing if the legs are useless little nubs now, but what happened to the other pair of legs? This thing feels like it should have four legs and three heads. But no. It just kinda loses those legs because now the two side-heads look more like arms. Which is another detriment to the design, I feel.
There is the implication that the middle head is the dominant one, but. Hydreigon just feels boring when its other two heads got downgraded to glorified arms in design terms. Though I will take victory in that this fearsome, vicious, monstrous pseudo-legendary is carrying around sock puppets.

Nah, not this time. Sorry, Hydreigon. It’s an okay design but. I’m not convinced as much thought went into it as much as the first two.
Overall:
Dragonite aside of course, this feels like the biggest letdown of a pseudo-legendary. It could've been so cool and unique, and charmingly goofy yet so powerful! But instead we get a fairly generic dragon. I would’ve loved the thing had it kept the shaggy hair and face-covering eyes and stayed a purely walking dragon.
