I finally finally FINALLY rescued another character I like using, and he also happens to be a character I haven’t unlocked yet! He’s strong yet tricky to master, he’s got an army at his side he’d be nothing without, heeeee’s Captain Olimar!
If you knew me waaaaaaay back during...geez, my first year on Tumblr...then you’d probably remember that Olimar was my main in Brawl. Learning him was really fun, and he was stupid powerful in Brawl. SSB4 saw him nerfed a bit, so I found myself using him less and less. Even now, I’m not sure how often I’ll use him when compared to all the other characters I love (especially when I have one more now in the form of Inkling), but I still got a soft spot for the guy. In WoL at least, he’ll be an asset to me!
Luckily, he seems pretty unchanged from SSB4 - still got that pesky limit of three Pikmin, part of me wishes it was raised to five again but what can you do, and he still has Winged Pikmin as his recovery. All his smash attacks are as powerful as ever. Pikmin still have the same effects when you throw them (they all latch onto the enemy and do gradual damage, minus Purples who bounce off but do more damage).
Playing as Olimar again was like rediscovering an old interest....Aw heck, it was more fun than I thought. I guess old mains die hard!
On to the rest of my session, it was slow getting started, because I hit a few ACE Spirit fights. First off, Star Rod, which was optional, so after losing a bunch I decided “screw it, I’ll come back when I have more characters”. The second one I DID actually win, but it took a while, and that was.....oh geez! I can’t remember the Spirit! It’s been a few hours, and it escapes me...Well, it was against an Alph who had the ability to get stronger after eating, and also to pull items toward him....while all the items were food. So, yeah, he healed a lot, and he was TOUGH. But, I did do it, thanks to quick movement and usage of Villager’s powerful attacks.
Other than those two fights, there was....Reyn, who had “the enemy likes to taunt”, which made me laugh. XD Another one I liked was Iridescent Glint Beetle, which was a golden Squirtle who did nothing but run from you, so it felt almost exactly like chasing Beetles down in Pikmin.
I haven’t really found any more Spirits I wanna USE recently...just a lot of powerful magic attack-related stuff that I have no use for NOW, but will definitely use later.
Besides Olimar, I rescued a couple other characters. Most notably, by beating Olimar I gained the ability to play as Piranha Plant! Without even fighting it! XD
I stopped playing after clearing out the mushroom area, and making my way to the caves, a Poke Pelago-esque feature where you stick four Spirits in and they find stuff for you after a certain amount of time. I thought that’d be a good place to stop.
On my way out, however, I unlocked King K. Rool! Finally, another newcomer! And DANG, did he not go down easy! He’s a tank! Of course, I have fought him over Wi-Fi a couple times, so I knew what to expect, and beat him after a while of throwing Pikmin at him while he jumped onto the side platforms of Jungle Japes. I know that I’m gonna wanna beat Classic with Olimar soon, so maybe I’ll do it as him also before continuing WoL...He’s a character I’ve never used before, and even though I can already tell he’s not really my type of character (I don’t normally use slow tanks), he could still be interesting to try out.
