so a thing this fandom does that remains FASCINATING to me, as a function of the fact a lot of this fandom is people's first fandom or only current fandom, is just... assume a lot of things it does is a scourge that this fandom has invented or doesn't exist outside of it? or like, is uniquely bad here? and i won't deny that sometimes mcyt fandom is a bit more intense by virtue of numbers, but like...
duo names: confusing fandom-injokes to describe duos and groups tend to be an anime fandom thing specifically for many historical reasons, but they're not uncommon. hey quick--if you haven't been in KHR fandom, can you guess what 1827 is? no? i'll give you a hint: that's actually a ship name. or, ygo fans, tell me the difference between puppyshipping, prideshipping, violetshipping, and rivalshipping. my hint is that they're all kaiba ships and two of them are actually the same ship. good luck!
reducing characters to a specific trait: have you read fic in another fandom before? i would recommend you go do so and come back to me. my example here is "sasuke likes tomatoes", for the record.
common au fanon that's confusing to outsiders: my deep cut here is "when i got into certain tv fandoms i was baffled by the existence of sentinel/guide fics", which is a slightly older tv fandom thing so many of you probably don't know what i'm on about. but trust me: in certain fandoms it's ubiquitous and unless you've watched a completely different tv show you're gonna have to entirely pick it up from reading fic. oh hey, hybrid aus and watcher!grian, nice to see your relative here,
fanon being treated as canon: did you know there's this whole bnha character, naomasa, who is treated as canonically having a lie detector quirk? did you know that, best i can tell, that's not in canon anywhere, it just got echoed through fanon enough that everyone treated it as canon? 'fanon trait becomes so ubiquitous everyone assumes it has to be there' is not a new thing. also, batfamily fans, i have been lead to understand the tim and coffee thing is also this.
characters being treated badly to make a different dynamic look better: the fact we have the term 'character bashing' tells you all you need to know, here. if anything my one complaint on this front isn't even that it's happening--it's that i wish bashing and/or "not [character] friendly" was tagged a little more frequently, haha.
characters being reduced to their family dynamics: tale as old as time. "even the family dynamic thing" yes even that. just because this fandom tended to be particularly ship-adverse in the past didn't mean it didn't do basically the same behaviors as any fandom with shipping did with those dynamics, just gen. and other gen fandoms also do that. yes, down to the "and shipping reduces them to a ship, unlike my gen dynamic, which is very in-character; why can't people just be friends?" thing. some of you have to have been marvel fans right.
characters being reduced to their ships: some of you have to have been marvel fans right.
The Discourse: yeah this is an "actively running show" fandom thing, but also a hiatus fandom thing. ask a homestuck about vriskourse sometime. as much as i hate to say it, it probably made doomsday discourse look cute.
and those are just like... some things i've seen people complain about on my dash recently. idk it just hit me there are probably fans in mcyt fandoms who are assuming that some things (like hybrid aus or duo names) are the kind of things that only happen here, so i thought i'd offer some examples of other places they happen! i also have even more examples if you'd like.
to be clear: this isn't shaming anyone for complaining about any of these things. lord knows i go complain to my friends about it all the time, just the other day i was complaining in the category of 'they keep bashing my guy'. it's more of just... a gentle reminder that maybe we're big, maybe we're loud, maybe we have problems... but these problems aren't always unique.
so uh. we're all suffering together i guess...?

Riddle Explain to Mc his dorm rules: And rule 34 is-
Mc: *start laugh*
Riddle: Mc what fun is in Rule 34?
Mc: Oh Riddle you could never understand that without context. And I'm not going to give you context. The work of a health education teacher does not belong to me.
Riddle: Mc rule 45 forbids keeping ä secret from me. I demand you reveal the secrets of rule 34.
Mc: *hysterical laughter on the floor* I'm going to take that sentence out of context

Mc: *Sits on the grass and pat's Malleus' head*
Malleus: *Lie on Mc's lap and purr*
Leona: MC! What are you doing? Why are you petting that lizard when you haven't petted me in weeks?
Mc: But Leona that Lizard purrrrrrrr's. You don't purr.
Leona: Mc don't be stupid lizards don't purr.
Malleus: *smiley and purr louder*
Leona: What the-
Malleus: Ever heard of magic? It's really useful sometimes. *Purr harder*
Mc: So you don't purr naturally... I feel like I have been tricked.
Leona: Wait so you think that purring dragon was normall?
Mc: Yeah. That's the first dragon I've ever met.

*At the dorm leaders' meeting*
Vil: So Mc what were you thinking of doing this weekend?
Mc: Smash
*everyone stares at Mc*
Leona: *instant waking up*
Azul: *blushes* Oh with who
Mc: With my friend.
Riddle: *is Red* You what-
Mc: Smash with friends
Vil: *almost choking on tea*
Azul: *almost choke's too*
Malleus: *whisper to Kalim* Kalim what is smash?
Kalim: I have no idea...
Leona: *laugh really hard*
Mc: What... Why are you acting strange? I just said that- Ooh. Pervert's. I meant I'm going to play Smash bros with a friend.
At this point, all the dorm leader's are relieved. Even Malleus and Kalim who don't realize what's going on.
If you're wondering where Idia is, he left as soon as the meeting officially ended

A Twst request where female reader gets hugged by them and they can feel their chest without knowing they were a girl, with the dorm leaders + Rook, Floyd,Jade.
Rest of them are here...
Malleus is worried. Are you all right? Mc, you know that this is not normal. The dragon boy is innocent. Then it hits him. Mc is a female? Oooooh. Malleus is a little hurt when you didn't tell me earlier. His tail wags excitedly. This would be a good fake excuse to get him to marry you. Dragons are greedy and don't like sharing.
Leona just wanted a goodnight hug. Well, now because of that goodnight hug, he can't sleep. Leona thinks about two things 1) How did he not notice your gender? 2) Do you think he's an asshole? Leona would try his best to show respect to you. But at least he knows what others don't. This is going to be fun.
Riddle would be really red. He never would have expected this. Riddle is now even more sorry for attacking you during the overblot incident. He would try to stay matter-of-fact. But it's hard if you can't form sensible sentences. Definitely won't tell anyone.
Azul would have had a crush on you even before this information. It must be hard to be the only girl on campus? What if he helped you? Azul will be happy to make a contract with you. You just have to start dating him. Isn't it easy? Azul just tries to hide his shock.
Kalim wouldn't really get it. He is such an innocent boy. He doesn't even suspect that you could be a woman. Instead, he's scared. You must have a serious illness. He tells you to stay put so he can get Jalim. Jalim surely knows what's wrong. You need to explain the situation to him. Now Kalim is a bit red.
Vil would be shocked. How did he not recognize you female? Are you so unfeminine and take such poor care of your appearance? This won't work. No way. Guess who gets Vil's beauty care lectures for the rest of the day? That's right you will. Vil is surprisingly strong.
Idia.exe will never work again. He would already be shocked by the hug. But then he felt your breasts. Mc didn't you have an accident in alchemy class that changed your gender? Say it's the truth. Idia is shocked when you say it isn't. He needs time to recover.

My #1 post of 2022
Mc: *pat Leona* Why you don't purr?
Leona: Mc lions don't purr... That's what cats do. Now be more quiet. I try to sleep
Mc: *looks disapointed* Oh...
Ruggie: *Walks nearby and notices that Mc looks sad* Oh hey mc what's wrong?
Mc: * points at Leona while stroking his head * That big cat doesn't know how to purr
Ruggie: Oh yeah lions don't purr... But hyenas do... Maybe you want to test it?
Leona: *instand waking up*
Leona wasan't happy

This isn't meant to be aggressive, but can you talk more about your antipathy for the les mis fandom? From your posts I think you're generalizing the fandom and maybe being disrespectful towards the content creators. The fandom is made up of people who love all les mis media, whether it's the book, older movies, stage musical, or 2012 movie. There's no drama, everyone likes and does their own thing, and everyone has found friends along the way in being a part of it.
Hi, anon.
I don’t doubt that Les Mis fandom is a cool, chill place to be for people who enjoy what it currently is. When I make posts expressing my frustration and dissatisfaction with the current Les Mis fandom, it’s because the fandom that currently exists is fundamentally different from the fandom that I enjoyed years ago.
The fan culture that existed prior to the 2012 movie is gone, full stop. When I took a step back from Les Mis fandom, it wasn’t because I didn’t like Les Mis as a book or a musical. It wasn’t that I didn’t think there were talented content creators making great fanwork.
Les Mis fandom was something that was extremely important to me, something that helped me through difficult times, something that I considered a part of my identity for years. It was something that brought me joy and knowledge and friendship. Based on your ask, I’m sure you can relate.
When the wave of new fans arrived after the 2012 movie came out, the landscape of fandom changed radically. I was open to it at first, but a few months into 2013, I started to realize that interacting with Les Mis fandom was exhausting me. More often than not, going in the tags made me upset and angry and confused. The drama and discourse was unbearable, and even when things were civil, I was finding that the fanon that was emerging and dominating the fandom was just kind of unappealing to me. The kinds of fan content that I loved (meta, highly researched fanfiction that taught me things about literature and history, canon era fanart, canon era anything) were harder and harder to find in the sea of modern au content. I was trying to enjoy Les Mis fandom and I couldn’t, and that freaked me out.
It’s difficult to see posts about “Les Mis fandom” on my dash in the same way that it might be difficult to see someone throwing a party in your childhood home, except you did not voluntarily move out of your childhood home and instead escaped out of the bathroom window because people started setting things on fire and drawing on the walls. And maybe you walk by later and the chaos has died down, the fires are out, people are hanging out on the porch with lemonade and laughing and they’re politely showing each other their sketchbooks. But even if you wanted to go back after everything that happened, when you walk inside, you find that they’ve completely redecorated. It’s barely even your childhood home anymore, and as it turns out, the only faces you still recognize are the ones of the people who were burning your friend’s quilt.
So.
For me, engaging with Les Mis fandom is bittersweet at best, infuriating at worst. If you like how it is now, there’s nothing wrong with that. The fact remains that the fandom that many old fans knew and loved does not exist anymore and we have the right to be sad about that and express our feelings on the matter. When I make posts venting about Les Mis fandom, I am speaking to my friends who shared my experience. They are personal posts and the level of engagement that they get is reflective of that.
