Because the PLD questline is so bad in FFXIV, especially for someone who leveled both PLD and DRK, Meowdred’s path to paladin training was actually completely different from the game’s default level 50 to 60.
Haurchefant trained in the sword with him during the months between the Bloody Banquet and Heavensward, hence Mordred knowing several very Ishgardian techniques. Then after the Vault, Artoirel picked it up with him as a means to honor Haurchefant even though Mordred didn’t really have the heart to use the sword and shield to any real degree.
From 60 onwards the reason why Mordred ended up participating in the tournament was because he was already there doing that… See, he likes to fight in the Coliseum. But nobody wants to bet against the Warrior of Light, and since he makes no profits as a fighter/disrupts the betting pool the Coliseum wouldn’t LET him fight.
So Mordred would pick another name and go as some hidden person, using weapons and techniques not widely associated/known with his Warrior of Light-ness. And dude was raking in some pretty gils when Papashan caught him in the act.
When he hit him with “You gotta rep Ul’dah in this upcoming tournament because Her Grace requests it” Mordred had little choice but to agree. So there he was. Doing the level 60-70 quests. 💀
