Society should shift towards a technology and science focus and away from consumerism and amassing wealth

It seems that humanities' current purpose is largely to make money, pay taxes, and die. If you're able to escape to a different purpose it still revolves around your capacity to earn money, which usually is driven by a consumer based economy, pay taxes, and die.

If you're an artist, you are typically only making money if your art can make money for someone. For video games, if there isn't a profit involved then it doesn't get made. People sacrifice quality and passion to drive profits. But what are these profits after all? Essentially they're the individual's ability to amass more wealth and that wealth is used to amass more consumer goods.

What if, instead, a higher emphasis were placed on advancing science and technology for the betterment of all of the planet? If everyone looked away from consumer goods and could contribute to a higher purpose, then even mind numbing jobs would have more meaning than simply acquiring wealth for consumerism and survival. Instead, now you're working to improve the advancement of all of humanity, because your tax contributions (for example) are focused on giving all of humanity greater advancements in science and medicine and tech which would, in turn, make life easier and enriched for everyone.

The excess wealth would not be amassed by individuals which is sat on and squandered, but it would expand and enrich these pursuits which have the primary purpose of automating processes and providing solutions to problems which all humans face.

Imagine if a medical program had trillions of dollars at its disposal worth of power, instead of a few hundred humans having that wealth between themselves for no reason other than that they invested it half a century ago?

I know this is a radical attack on our current principles and economics but I think that we need to make a drastic shift because the rates of suicide and depression are very obvious indicators that humans are not content with slavery to a perpetual system of stepping on each other for the sake of profits and increasing individual bank accounts.

Cant we, instead of fighting and hoarding for a better future, work towards sincerely creating as close to a utopia as possible without individual wealth and power being a concern? What if there is simply a solution through future tech that every human can experience happiness and have all of the necessities they require for a healthy and fulfilling life? What if it doesn't involve owning mansions and drowning in excess? What if that could be experienced through future virtual reality for personal pleasure instead of actual reality at the expense of so many billions of humans lives?

I think we have come to a point where this is actually possible. Maybe not in the next ten years. But I think it is something that can be worked towards. It would involve cooperation and genuine interest in providing our societies most brilliant minds with the propensity they need to achieve the greatest groundbreaking achievements possible in the shortest amount of time.

Currently many limitations in science, medicine, and technology are set by financial limits. Why should this be the case? I think that our planet has enough resources and enough hard working and intelligent people that we could achieve a far greater version of life than the average person currently experiences. Imagine instead of having to choose between buying a new fancy car and a new fancy house if you were already content and happy with what you have and you were able to choose how you spend your free time with your friends and family? I think time is more valuable than the pursuit of consumer goods. We could provide much needed time and peace of mind to more people if our science and tech allowed us to.

Why do we not have bright minds focused towards these pursuits by giving them the tools they need to do so? We put so much emphasis on working long hours to amass wealth to make the next expensive clothing or the next fast car or the next big television, but these things are empty temporary pleasures that have very little happiness value compared to a harmonious society where people rely on advanced possibilities, technologies/scientific & medical breakthroughs of the future which are no longer a dream because we have all contributed to making them real here and now instead of simply wishing.

It would be possible for everyone to have everything they could dream of in an advanced virtual reality for example. Why do we need physical goods and waste and byproducts of waste as things and stuff just grow obsolete or damaged and constantly replaced by the next shiny things and stuff?

This is a little bit of a rambling but it's an idea I had and thought I'd share it. Maybe I'm not able to make sense of this idea any better. Perhaps some of you can throw your ideas out there as well. Even if we are just dreaming, I think dreams are important and eventually become reality when people see incentive in them. A lot of talk of socialism seems to still revolve around profits and an archaic sense of monetary wealth. I just feel that our current technology has shown that this system is becoming obsolete and we should shift towards something better. I know rich people wont like this as much as poor people because they have a hand up on everyone, but what if that hand up is unnecessary and what if your happiness could increase along with everyone else's by owning and being part of an advanced civilization instead of sitting in the 21st century still arguing over 17th century ideologies?

Hi my name is Logan Lariviere. death is the one thing that we all fear yet we are running ourselves straight into it. Our world is ending. I know that seems to be a common issue for the modern world but it’s true. All that’s around us. The poverty, over use of power, starvation and dehydration and the health of humans and our planet are failing and failing still. yet we are all still humans with the same problem. We can’t act together to help our future. Everyone is trying different things like those new metal straws and biodegradable cups and plastics. This is not even close. It’s a small step but we need a lot more. But in reality and what is going to happen is bad. It will kill everyone and leave no one. yet people in developing and developed countries are still not seeing this. We need to come together and I’m not meaning protest to the five governments that care I’m saying everyone. We need to be together at this time because soon it will be too late and no one will be left. i think the main reason why is that no one knows what truly is going to happen and that should be scaring us the most that we have no idea how or when we are all dead. We live in the most modern society that has ever lived on this planet and yet we still can’t get along. We are all the same people with brains and that are thinking subconsciously about everything. We have all had a life. My life. Your life. Your neighbours life. That random person beside you has had a whole life full of going to high school having a childhood had a shitty life or one of the best life with love hate memories that they have to themselves sitting alone in their bedroom and thinking about the universe. We have all thought and experienced different things and we have the power to be a perfect society. We could be able to share and have our own lives without judgment and no one would ever have to live in fear. I have no experience with gangs or true pain or secret government operations and war but why do we make these things a reality. I want everyone to think about one bad thing in this world. Now think why why would someone some human with the same thinking as me a whole life ahead and behind them with the same thought process as me would want to be part of this. People are literally killing people and stealing and all these other horrible things and for what that the way we grew up. We have the power to change and not make people have to do this. People wouldn’t comment these these things if we where close together with everyone. This is with governments too. they are people too. I would hope that they don’t want these things to happen but are forced too because of other governments and the people making them act the way they do. An example of current things is the debate with North Korea’s dictatorship. I have no say in how Donald trump and Kim jon un work or run their countries but what if they didn’t have to have to worry about going to war because everyone was together. we need to talk and actually make something happen. We need no more hate or suffering even though it sounds hipster and not possible. But it truly could be. There just hasn’t been the chance yet and with all this tech we can have that chance. the amount of communication in this world is insane yet we still can’t be friends with people. There is no need for this kind of stuff to be happening. If we all think for being people to people and no more power and we all just think and truly honestly want to live more than 30 or less years. Then we need to stop this. I’m not saying get rid of governments and gangs using protest and riots I’m saying actually talk. I’m a 17 year old teenager and I don’t know if this is just in my own mind or if it could be true is that we can all work on our planet and figure out what the fuck we have to do in this time. with the whole world behind me and i’m front I believe that we can do something to help us and literally change the rest of human civilization and the future of human race. I’ve seen dozens of movies with futuristic space travel and traveling to other places and I do believe that could be possible in the future. Wouldn’t you want your kids or grand kids or your a million grandchildren away to be able to be possible. Do we want to be known for the turning point of all humanity and will be in history books forever as the first time people have come together and made peace with the world. I’m not saying that it is going to be easy. It will take years and years making true sense of what we are facing but We just need to do it before it’s impossible to change. I am sacred for the human race. That is the truth. I want for our planet and future to live forever and be able to explore our galaxy. We need to find something together to help our planet. We will die and it will be horrible and more suffering than imaginable and all of humanity with fail to exist if we don’t change. We are all the same. It was our dividend past that is only thing that is holding us back from being one. If we can just forget the past way that we used to live we can help our planet and our future. my older brother nick is married to rayna and she was from china. i’ve heard so many stories from her of how difficult it is to live there and i just don’t understand why. why would you not want to change something that you can change. there is no force saying be at war and make lives miserable. it’s us. we are doing it to ourselves. she says that china has such a demand for schooling but for what. to work your whole live and see nothing of the world. because that’s what most people’s lives are. just work and sleep. that’s not living and we can change that we just need to find out how. I’ve had a recent encounter at my local beach with my beautiful girlfriend Hailey gies. It was actually helpful for this and it was with a small family of I think 5-6. It was a little boy 11 I’m guessing and I can remember him yelling “look you can actually swim here!” That made me think for those few seconds after. I first thought oh maybe they just lived with no public pools but then I saw that they where from another country and realized that it wasn’t that. It was that for their whole life that they haven’t seen a clean usable fresh water to be able to swim in. I think that’s horrible. It’s difficult for people that live in places like Canada or any where clean to imagine never being about to watch a clean sunset and go swimming. Let me say that again. Some, no most people in our world have never seen a clean sunset or beach. How bad is that. and that’s right now not with all the new pollution being made and it’s getting worse. i’ve taken dozens of trips up to my cottage in my life already and i love it there. clean, trees everywhere, crystal clear lakes and fish forever. it’s a great place to go and i recommend it. but i’m very lucky. 98% i’m guessing of the worlds population has never seen or been to a place like that. and why not. because no one knows how to respect nature fully and also have people live there. we are all dead in 30 years or less. it’s not fake or just me scaring you into helping. it’s actually true. all life. all nature. all water. all houses. all corporations. all gangs. all hate. and i would hope this would be the most important. no us. no more humans because of us. we will create a mass suicide and it’s gonna be bad. no one gonna get out of this. rich. poor. dictators. or anyone. i believe that the main reason why we can’t figure this out is because we don’t have everyone with us. we cant do this with even half the population and we aren’t even close to that now. we need everyone to help. we need to get rid of these stereotypes and barriers that the past has build us. not us. we can have a whole new way of life if we can stop having these stupid things about another race. like come on we really have to think badly about everyone. we only think bad about another race is because we grew up on not knowing and only hearing the negative things about places. but think about it. if we had the whole world together you don’t think we could have better everything. faster travel. space travel. clean energy. and everything in between. we could have a perfect world. there will be thousands of problems starting this and getting it to everyone but once we do. it will be amazing. yes some people might take years to convince and change their ways but that’s why we have to start now. we have to give ourselves time to come together and think of how to get either off this planet or save it. and that’s not a lot of time to take the whole world and basically move everyone off. it will take long to plan, build, discover, and figure out a way to do it and that’s why we need to start now. we will all die if we don’t come together. that’s it. we will not survive this planet if we don’t. it’s that easy. either we can start coming together and get busy or sit around and wait 20 years to die. all of your memories, family, dog, fish, your family name, your grandpas funny stories, your crush in 8th grade, your car, your food, your room, your most hated teacher and your most loved one, that random kid that you laughed at when he said a funny joke, that guy that just took your last meal order at Swiss chalet. everything. gone. then when in the future because it will probably eventually happen extraterrestrial life will come to earth and see what was once us and morn that we couldn’t figure out how to save ourselves. do we want to be known through the whole universe that we killed ourself out of greed and war. we will be known as the dumb organisms that couldn’t figure out how to live. the size of our universe is massive. it’s bigger than massive. it it the literal largest thing in any thing possible. think about how much exploration that we would get out of just visiting one new planet and we would learn so much from just our solar system. think about all that we have learned from from just the earth alone. the knowledge that we would get from getting off this planet would be expediently. we would never not have something to do. we could go to the moon for a day trip like we go to the beach. and what is stopping us. nothing except us. who is having fun living right now. having debt, worrying about passing classes, worrying if you have enough food to feed your family. and no one want to live like this but we still do. why can’t we live lives like we want too. we have the technology we just need to work together to get the technology to work together instead of a race. we are treating our lives like a race whoever has the most money or tech wins and gets to live wealthy. but if you don’t have access to those you have to live poor and work and work and work. we can live together now and with no wars. there is literally no more point to wars. it used to be we couldn’t understand and communicate well enough with them but now i can send a message in sarnia and it be in china in a second. the past didn’t have that luxury that’s why their wars started but as of right now if one person does one small thing that another country doesn’t like. we all die. if we get into any more wars that’s it. we die. our earth can’t stand another war with the weapons we have now. we are going into a new generation of life like nothing has been done before. the way of life that has been going on for centuries and longer is completely changing soon. we are going to move forward as a species just like we are just evolving from a primate. we are going to be the first generation that is going to make space travel easy and fast. we are going to be the first ones that have figured out how to work together and be proud of what we all accomplished as a human. a new better friendship with all of us involved. no group left out. the way of our time of being separated and against one another has to change. if it doesn’t well we die. if we do our entire lives will change very dramatically and in a good way. think about all the technology and new life and new partnerships and everything that would come from us joining together. when and if we do eventually come together before the end then we will be going into a complete new era. the main problem that i think is that the way that we have raised our children in the past has been negative instead of positive. by that i mean we should be setting up our children for the future and not how to be perfect. modern times has helped with this but that’s the problem. only modern times not the past. in the past kids where treated like a adult and weren’t taught how to be better. i mean that our parents and grandparents have been raised as the world and life is a job. no time for fun. and that’s why they grow up to be the way they are. we can’t change what has happened and i am sorry for everyone that has had a bad terrible childhood because that’s what the times called for. but these are new times. we can change how we move forward. you can never get your childhood back but we can make a great world for your grandchildren or kids to grow up in and also for you to have the life that you wanted. i’m not saying everyone’s was bad but there was definitely a negative impact on what the older generation views are. we can’t blame them for what has happened. they didn’t know. but know we do and we need change. i’m writing this for three main reason. one i want everyone to grow and live and our planet to survive. two i want our future generations to have a place to live that is clean and won’t kill them. third i want to live with my family and friends to make memories laughter sadness kindness and everything in between for my whole life and i don’t want that to be shortened by something that we could of stopped. i think everyone wants that. people say that history repeats itself. the black plague. ebola virus. wars. any sort of thing that has decreased our population. if we don’t change something this is going to happen again but on a global scale. and again. and again. that’s why history repeats itself. but we could change it. what if we could make it so we could change history and not let a massive population die because of something that we could of prevented. we all have one thing th
