The Orwells’ new album is quite good. I think this is the first time I’m listening to one of their records, but so far I really like it. For the past few days this was my go-to album when wondering what to listen during work. Definitely a good album worth your time

The Orwells- Terrible Human Beings (Album Review)
Tumblr media
Lately I’ve seen The Orwells being touted as a band that will “save rock and roll”. However, the band has refuted this claim several times and after listening to their newest album, Terrible Human Beings, I see why. The Orwells are not going to save rock and roll. But does that mean they aren’t a good band? Absolutely not. As far as bands go, The Orwells are young even for more recent bands. They formed in 2009 when they were in high school and released their first album, Remember When, in 2012. This album was my first taste of The Orwells music. I was a huge fan of songs like Mallrats (La La La), which had a fun, garage punk sound that was exactly what I was looking for at the time. Their second album, Disgraceland, was released in 2014. After a while, I completely forgot about The Orwells and moved on to other things. That was until January when I found out that they had a new album out the following month, having somehow missed all the singles and promotion. I made a mental note to listen to it and when it came out, I did. And I was surprised. I had gone in expecting the raw sound of their debut and was taken aback by the newer, more polished sound of Terrible Human Beings. Despite my surprise I actually found myself enjoying this album quite a lot. Lead singer Mario Cuomo’s voice sounds much better than it did on their first two records and the more produced sound was actually done really well. The album starts off with They Put A Body In The Bayou, which was previously released as a single. It has a sort of blues-influenced sound and set the tone for the whole album. The song is super catchy and cool sounding but falls short on lyrical content, which evokes old rock tropes like sex and drugs, as well as a super weird and out of place line about being in some kind of relationship with an underage girl. But overall, it’s a great song to kick off the album with. Next up is Fry, which is like the epitome of filler. After several listens I can barely remember it. After that is the song Creatures, which is definitely the most confusing song on the album, in the sense that I’m confused about whether I like it or not. The chorus is good, but the verses are almost annoying. Vacation, the next track, is one of the best on the album. It’s everything an Orwells song should be: fun, upbeat, and landing somewhere in that lyrical middle ground between meaningful and meaningless. However, the true highlight of the album is the song Black Francis, which is named after the Pixies frontman and has heavy Pixies influences as well as a reference to their song No. 13 Baby from 1989’s Doolittle. Something about it just makes it one of my absolute favorites that I come back to all the time. M.A.D. (short for Maybe Another Day) is good but not too memorable, as are many of the songs following it. Buddy, the album’s lead single, is not one of those though, with its fast, guitar driven sound and simple lyrics. As great a song as it is, it’s far too short and definitely not lead single material. Hippie Soldier, although some may find it lazy with it’s numerous “sha la la la"s., is a solid track even if it isn’t the best this album has to offer. However, this is where the album starts to get weaker. The next song, Heavy Head, which seemingly describes a kidnapping and subsequent decapitation, seems like it’s trying too hard to be more serious. That’s not what The Orwells do best. Sure, some darker songs are fine but make sure the song is decent. Body Reprise is just a short interlude following Heavy Head, and, despite its name, is not a reprise of They Put A Body In The Bayou, but rather a more experimental track that combines elements of previous songs. While not really necessary it definitely isn’t bad. Another filler track, Ring Pop, follows it and overall is not a song that I’d go back to even though is does have some decent guitar solos. Following that is another one of my favorites on the album, Last Call (Go Home). The first time I listened to the album I kind of skimmed over this one but one subsequent listens I absolutely love it. In fact, the album should have just ended there. But it doesn’t. There’s one more song, Double Feature. Double Feature is the most unnecessary song on the whole album. Despite its over 7 minute length, I still remember nothing of it. The album would have just been better without it. Overall, Terrible Human Beings is a very standard garage rock album. It’s fun, fast, and loud and fans of The Orwells and other similar bands will probably like it just as much as I do. There is a little bit left to be desired but for the most part, this album makes a fine addition to The Orwells discography.
Score: 8/10
Best Tracks: They Put A Body In The Bayou, Vacation, Black Francis, Last Call (Go Home)
Worst Tracks: Heavy Head, Double Feature
