The Help by Katheryn Stockett {review} . . . I’ve heard criticism that the author stereotyped black women in the book, but I felt she treated the whole issue very respectfully. As an afterward the author shared that she herself had been raised by a black maid, and while she was afraid to to cross a line by writing in black voices, she felt this was the best approach to an issue dear to her heart. I liked how balanced it was. It did an excellent job of showing the very real discrimination and hate those people faced as they served in white homes. But she also talked about the beauty of some of those relationships. Aibelene loved her little Mae Mobley, and the author had a mother-daughter relationship with her own maid. The development of Skeeter and Aibelene’s relationship was very well done too. It began with a lot of fear and mistrust, then the issue they were writing about became a cause in Skeeter’s heart. At the end, they felt like family! So I appreciated the the balanced writing. Neither black people nor white people were made out to be saints, but neither were they made out to be evil. That’s something missing in the narrative today. They were shown to all be people with different issues and the need to work on them together. Also, the characters were so well-written! Even as deplorable as Hilly was, there were times when you couldn’t completely hate her. I gave it 5/5 ⭐️ #kathrynstockett #thehelp #thehelpbykathrynstockett #bookstagram #christianbookstagram #bookreview #turningeverypaigereviews #biblophile #bookishfeatures #minimalistbookstagram #booksandcoffee #booksandwhimsy #readersofinstagram #vscoreads #adesignkit https://www.instagram.com/p/CP__OyKLVdw/?utm_medium=tumblr
