breaking news: surprising absolutely no one, pik has fallen in love with the fast paced fps game where the big, silent badass of a main character's sole goal is to protect the small, squishy innocents.

time for my reviews of mcu crap bullshit: hawkeye edition
alright so its fine. its okay. its like, hard for me to give it a rating tho. writing this stuff out might help me figure that.
so first of all if you didnt know, the whole concept for the show is ripped from a popular comics run of hawkeye. my understanding is the actual creators of that got fuck all for this being taken from their work. this sucks, and in some ways it shines through in the finished product that it sucks. jeremy renner's hawkeye grows on me over the course of the show, but he still never quite has the charisma or acting chops to actually pull off what the show demands of him. it is felt that this stuff is a rewrite of a version of the character he was not attached to.
so the show starts with fucking. a bit of a broadway musical about the first avengers film. yknow the big fight in nyc thats like, clearly analagous to 9/11? massive destruction and surely a lot of casualties? yeah i guess a decade later a broadway musical and not like an artsy dark one just a. normal one. so thats already terrible worldbuilding and stupid and sets off on the wrong foot.
kate is done well from the get go- reckless, idolizes clint, naïve. she quickly gets wrapped up in some plot to do with that time clint was a mass murderer of criminals for several years, something which the show aims to kinda resolve but also like. absolutely makes the tone clash. this show does that a lot, and i really cant tell if its on purpose, we have lighthearted scenes with a LARP group in a show dealing with the aftermath of mass murder. we have gangs, but theyre mostly just goofy, except when they arent? we have a chase scene ending with ant man grow particles being shot in an arrow at another arrow to make it huge to crush a truck chasing them, obviously killing everyone inside. tbh im kinda cool with the not bothering to rehash some 'oh but am i just as bad as them if i kill them when theyre trying to kill me' shit but its still jarring? kate is like what 19 and she just killed some dudes. anyways. the trick arrows are fun, but they dont fit with the character we have built up in every previous appearance at all.
at first i was very annoyed at the addition of black widow's sister but tbh i think that got resolved well enough that i think it worked out well. still felt like they kept adding too much shit as things went on, but. her chemistry with kate ruled, its one of the only times the tone clash seemed clearly intentional AND worked- fighting her to stop her from killing clint while we pause and compliment each other's technique worked.
i fucking hate that they put the kingpin in this. its made very clear this is specifically the version from the netflix daredevil show, and that show ruled, and it made kingpin a compelling and complex character, and to see him dragged out for this and that poorly? genuinely insulting to the audience. we even had a bit where kate is taught by clint how to flick small objects with extreme accuracy and she uses this to flick one of his cufflinks at an explosive to defeat him. yknow, the cufflinks that like, explicitly symbolize his childhood trauma and how it has molded him? remember that fun detail? this isnt fanservice this is taking a shit on the idea that anything superhero related is worth more than a toy ad. they even ended his arc by having the camera pan up and a gunshot, too chickenshit to commit to him living or dying. hes dead, until we decide to use him again teehee. fuck im heated about that
yeah no it insulted netflix daredevil 4/10
(evelyn, before you ask, our protags do take the nyc subway several times)
