it’s not common knowledge that goncharov (1973) dir. martin scorsese was such a groundbreaking exploration of the mafia that coppola actually based young vito corleone on goncharov himself, going so far as to cast bobby de niro to play him in the godfather part ii. the assasination of don fenucci was even modelled after the scene where goncharov takes out mario’s father.
