Progress report 1 [I meant to make one sooner but decided not to]

Hello everyone! I remembered I'm supposed to do progress reports, per my itch.io page, oops Let's start with the GUI <3 So, I wanted to go for a subtitle-esque look for dialogue and text, the yellow is usually easier to see than other colors unless the bg is also yellow. I also added outlines on all of the text so its easiest to read. I deleted the text and namebox. Font is subject to change, but it's the clearest one I've found that I think is fitting and accessible, lmk if it's hard to read at all. Here's a screenshot of the font and colors, though :)

I haven't worked on the save screen yet, but I set up a cute gif for the main menu animation. I plan on coding a trophy room for the endings earned (beloved, loathed, hero, etc.). Characters besides MC also have color-coded names and personal outlines for dialogue, default text is outlined in black, Bresklyn's is pink, etc. Here's a cropped screenshot of her w her dialogue >w<

(so low res ough) I've been planning out and drawing cgs, but almost all of the assets besides that are done. The game currently has a health system (I haven't coded the health bar yet), wrath points (increases violence), and pity points (:]), as well as the obvious love points for every character. Player can receive traits that will change parts of the game, such as addictions. Promise you won't overdose, okay? You can also choose your species, and receive special buffs depending on who you are. Finished the toyhou.se page for the new character, I'll make it public when the game releases, other updates to the rest of the nighthive characters will come at that time as well. I'm adding some special saves if I can, so there are special endings and whatnot. I have 10 coded right now. Special saves will make it so player can get endings they normally can't get in the game, no matter what choice/route they may choose. I am unsure if this function will work, I'll be sure to have my lovely beta testers try it before release. That's all I can say right now! getting to the end of moving MH back to Twine (need to move the last valeri and gnarl chapters), then I have to start writing the convenience features (build a save, the ability to change the MC mid-game: I already have regular save/load working and I think I've managed to figure out the "next" function), and then writing Abeni's chapter and then in theory the MH demo will be complete !!

Yeah, and a mac port was planned. If you want the quick answer, it's this: Apple updated their OS making the libraries DT's code depends on seemingly incompatible and Google Play added a filesize limit DURING DT development (after I announced an android port would come) which is lower than DT's total filesize. In longer form, basically this is what happened: Dialtown uses code libraries for rendering the game's UI + images. Apple's OS updated during Dialtown production, making the game incredibly unstable when testing ports of iOS + Mac builds. All logs point to the renderer, which works fine on PC and Android on my end. Looking into it, people have been struggling with RPG Maker MV games crashing on MacOS since a recent enough update too, and the developers of the engine will not fix it, as they moved onto another program during Dialtown development. A lot of troubleshooting was done on my end, but unfortunately, it's in apple's nature to change things and tell developers to just 'deal' with it. The public documentation available in this case doesn't cut it. Android's an even sadder story. Google Play changed their filesize requirements during DT development! Meaning the game is too large to fit on their store. It was 100% fine before they changed that rule mid-production. Kinda has left me in an awkward spot where I'd have to heavily compress the whole game to get it to initially work, but also you'd have to download parts of the build in-game as you're playing, as Google won't even let you download every asset on demand.

So for android, yeah, the issue is on Google Play's end. They won't allow large the game to download entirely, and they decided all this without me ever finding out, mid-development :) Long story short, iOS is still very much possible, theoretically, but it'd take more testing than I'm currently comfortable with to make sure the whole game works, as the changes needed to update it to the newest apple os version has a tendency to break image rendering + UI. And for Google Play, I'd have to break the game up into parts/individual routes (ugh) and heavily compress those parts per build, or get someone at google to grant an exception??? maybe??? Is that a thing they'd even do?
So to conclude, the ports are shelved for now. Will I come back to this? Possibly. Probably? I don't wanna leave this abandoned, but TBH, it's been a disheartening process since I was assured by other developers/the program I used was advertised to work on all platforms, and the restrictions preventing the porting both popped up after I started working on DT.

We're moving!
So, with everything going on right now I think it's time I announce something. I wanted to finish the edits before announcing it, but because of what has recently been revealed about COG's future pursuits and all of the authors announcing that they're leaving the platform (which is nothing new and something that I 100% understand and support), alongside some other things regarding the company that I was already not feeling great about, I think it's time. I've been delaying it too much.
Patrons already knew this, but it is something that I have been working on for many months. The new version of the game is being published on itch.io (this month's alpha update was the prologue and half of chapter one built entirely on twine!). The previous alpha is no longer available and I will not continue to update the choicescript version.
Once I'm caught up with my edits (been too busy so we're still on early chapter 2) I will be releasing the itch.io public version with new scenes, better writing and caught up with the original version. It will also have (hopefully) new art done by yours truly, I think I've improved enough to redo the old portraits.
Since we're already announcing things I have decided on an age rating for the game. Though there won't be heavily explicit scenes, I'm going for an 18+ rating because of the themes featured in the game, and because I know it might get kind of heavy the further in we go. So, if you are a minor, I am sorry but this game is not for you and I ask that you do not interact with the blog.
Going back to the twine version…
To show you how far we have come, here is a screenshot of the twine version of the game, featuring the new first encounter with Hazuki and Masa (chapter 1). Here MC has made a choice that led them to this very weird outcome:
