#the douglas Adams space bureaucracy humor
Text
Ok maybe I like the Loki pilot a little tooooo much because somehow when I was like 7 I got the idea that after you die you have to watch a movie of every bad thing you ever did and then you find out if you’re going to heaven or hell and I’ve been haunted by that concept ever since.

Zarking good time. The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is one of the most famous pieces of science fiction in the English language. The story has been adapted into almost every medium, from radio to novels to tv to movies. And it's easy to see why it's so popular. This was one of the funniest books I've ever read. Go to Amazon
This is easily the best story ever written This is easily the best story ever written. They've tried to make movies out of it over the years but can never capture the universe in a way that even remotely does justice to Douglas Adams writing. The level of imagination and detail in the hitchikers guide galaxy never ceases to amaze me. It is the only series I have read over and over and over throughout my life and never ever gotten sick of. I think everyone should read this series at least once in their lifetime. It is an integral part of our culture and one of the most influential pieces of writing of our time. It is a modern classic. If you have any interest in sci-fi, read this "trilogy" at least twice. Go to Amazon
Mandatory reading. If you haven't read these books yet, do yourself a favor and buy this collection. Most emphatically if you enjoy Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, or Mr. Bean. This is British humor to the bone. (not really a surprise when you realize that Douglas Adams worked with several members of Python before writing this book, but I digress. Go to Amazon
So glad that the digital version of this exists I read this book years and years ago, in the bookstore, when I was too poor to afford to actually buy it. When I finally got a job and went back to the store, I was distraught to find that the one copy had been sold, and then horrified to learn it was out-of-print, and there would never be another copy showing up on the shelf. Time is an Illusion. Lunchtime Doubly So. Douglas Adams’ bestselling book The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy published in 1979 is witty, occasionally complex, and accessible to the average reader. The protagonist, Arthur Dent, is a befuddled Englishman and his friend, Ford Prefect, is a hitchhiking alien doing research for the latest edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The two narrowly escape destruction with the rest of planet Earth when Ford catches wind of its impending demolition by intergalactic civil servants and beams them to the nearest accessible spaceship--the Vogon demolition fleet’s mothership. Inside, they encounter murdered mattresses, ruthless bureaucrats, and torture by poetry. They are soon ejected into space and twenty-nine seconds later (one second short of death), the president of the universe and his girlfriend rescue them in their recently stolen state-of-the-art spaceship, The Heart of Gold. In the remaining pages, Adams prioritizes unpacking the absurdity of bureaucracy, politics, and religion over a strong plot and whimsically manipulates grammar and rhetoric to inspire in the reader a sense of his disregard for the possibility of any sense or meaning to life. Funny and Quirky I throughly enjoyed this book. Extremely funny, zany and witty, it also manages to be a clever space epic as well. While there is no discernible central plot, the individual events are entertaining and hilarious. The book also comes across as wonderfully subversive with its commentary on the police and bureaucracy being standouts. I will definitely get the next chapter. My only complaints are that the book ends rather abruptly and events move too quickly. The humor sustains the jerky pacing and lack of central plot but I wonder how well this will hold up across all five chapters. Go to Amazon
A Galactic Adventure On Earth. A wonderful, joyously-written love story set in Arthur Dent's absurd universe. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is my favorite book; this one is my second favorite. Douglas Adams provided that he could write with wit, sarcasm, and imagination in his first three books. This book takes one by surprise, because it shows he could also write with great tenderness, gentleness, and love. We fans lost him much too early, and where is the writer to take his place? Go to Amazon
Monty Python Meets Science Fiction What can you say about an author who wrote a 5 book trilogy? One hilarious read, for one thing. I'd read Adams many years ago and wanted to return to read him again only this time a little more critically to see if the material still worked for me. It did. Go to Amazon
People love this book... and it is great!! Read this book after watching a poor movie remake (bcs of Allen rickman being in it). It was a great book, just not as amazing as I was led to believe. Go to Amazon
Amazing As we all know, the story of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is fantastic, very entertaining to read, and all of that. Since almost everyone who will have arrived at this page will probably have read it alerady, I wil instead comment on the "Illustrated" part of this edition. Go to Amazon
Cult Classic... for good reason This series by Douglas Adams has gained a cult following over the decades since it was written. Snappy humor, witty and clever writing, absolutely ludicrous scenarios - they're all here. Go to Amazon
Douglas Adams = FANTASTIC! Douglas Adams was a brilliant writer taken from us too soon. I've been listening and reading his books for the past 20+ years and enjoy them each time I listen or read them. I wish I still had the original set of Hitchhiker's Guide on cassette. I have not been able to find that same version. But his books are truly fun to read. So many parts of these books are a part of our family lexicon - 42, so long and thanks for all the fish, thank you for making a simple door very happy, life...don't talk to me about life, and it just goes on from there. Go to Amazon

Hilarious and so much fun. Better than the TV series Hilarious and so much fun. Better than the TV series. If you love Douglas Adams, this is the fountain from which you must drink. Go to Amazon
Beware the American editions This Kindle edition is a compilation of the bowdlerised American editions of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This proably won't affect or offend readers whose introduction to Adams' wrks was through what some editor though his work should be, but those of us who grew up with the UK editions might not like the changes in dialogue and language that affect the humour too damned often. Go to Amazon
Douglas Adams is a word-wizard. Take one serving of humanity, one serving of national geographic for galactic travelers, two servings of comedy central, shake well, and you get this book. Sort of... I think its fantastic, so did a few hundred thousand others (thats why it became an instant classic many years ago). As with most good sci-fi books, its not really about spaceships and ray-guns, its about us reaching into the final frontiers.Except as mentioned earlier here: this one has two parts of comedy added for flavor. Enjoy! Go to Amazon

Don't panic, and don't forget your towel I love Douglas Adams, and the Hitchhikers Guide books have a special place in my heart. My dad had all of them and I grew up reading them. I'm so glad that I found this ultimate collection when I decided to buy my own copies; it's awesome to have the series in one place, and the book itself is very swanky. Heavy and leather bound and very impressive. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up ! Go to Amazon
Four Stars Silly and Fun Happy to have the collection Two Stars Five Stars Don't Panic -- it's mostly harmless and VERY entertaining (if you like British comedy) Five Stars My daughter loaned her copy and it was never returned ... Five Stars The Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy is a perfect combination of childhood imagination and adventure
