hi! hope you're doing well. i got a question for you about the what if with marc's funeral, if that's okay, and please let me know if i'm missing the mark or overstepping in any way. as a jewish guy, seeing a non-jewish funeral kinda felt bad to me. like marc was already buried, no one who loved him or knew him participated in the burial, and yes the heroes wore their gear instead of traditional mourning clothing, but putting a star of david on the tombstone felt like an afterthought. marlene's 'may your memory be a blessing' was nice, seeing gena and the kids and crawly was like yes those are his people! but overall idk the setup and eulogy wasn't working for me. tldr my question is, what's your take on marc's funeral?

I guess before I say anything I should preface this by mentioning that I’m honestly just some dude on the internet and I really shouldn’t be considered an authority on anything. I’ve just read an unfortunately large number of comics and while I do dedicate a lot of time to learning as much as I can about anything, I definitely shouldn’t be considered an expert on matters as richly complex and integral to people’s very identities as religion or culture. In other words, I definitely appreciate you starting this conversation, but I really can’t offer anything more than a personal opinion that everyone should just take with a grain of salt.

But!!! thank you for sending this message, because, yeah, I realize that sometimes I can get so swept up in any writer even acknowledging that Marc is Jewish that I forget that, “oh yeah, this could be better and we should be well past the age where we had to hope for even the barest crumbs of representation.”

Accordingly, I fully see where you’re coming from and you’re probably right in that there was more the writer could have done. Even as I write that though, I can already hear the long list of excuses that could be made by devil’s advocates about why Marc’s funeral in What If…? Dark: Moon Knight was presented as it was. Most probably could be pretty easily refuted by anyone that wants better from the comic industry, but, hey, that’s comics: they thrive on intense, impassioned reader discussion and can somehow be ahead of their time in terms of cultural sensitivity AND painfully slow in breaking out of some really poor ways of depicting cultures, races, and religions.

[Putting in a read more because this got a little long (sorry all, mea culpa)]

But yeah, some of those excuses I can imagine include, first among them, space limitations. The creators had one page to depict the funeral in the single issue allotted to telling Marlene’s story of becoming Luminary. People could easily say something offhand and questionable like, “oh yeah, Marc’s mom sat shiva, but it all happened off panel,” but that explanation always feels a little cheap to me, as I know for fact that comic artists can get very creative with how they format a page to include critical information, but, eh, there it is.

Some people in these situations sometimes bring up the point that authors that share a background with the characters they depict can approach matters with a good understanding of what’s appropriate/significant. I can see the validity of that approach, but from the (admittedly brief) research I did, I haven’t found any conclusive statements on the writer’s background at least and I personally would rather not make any assumptions/speculations. (Again, that’s strictly a personal thing, because in my line of work, I come across a lot of bad actors who, from their perspective, “““accuse””” people of being certain races or ethnic backgrounds and I am,,,,very tired). Plus, that’s not necessarily a cure all, at least that’s what I’ve gathered from the heated debates on Bemis’ Moon Knight run that I still stumble upon on occasion.

The next thing that comes to mind, well, I don’t want to sound like I’m entirely absolving the creators since, sure, they probably could have done more, but I’m so used to grappling with the bad hands comic books deal me, that sometimes I propose what I guess could be referred to as Watsonian interpretations??? Like, yeah, this was ultimately written like this because creators are flawed, but I cope by trying to puzzle out in-universe explanations. In this case, I see this as potentially being some sort of hazy, not quite well constructed, reflection of Marc’s complex relationship with his background that characterized his adult life. Elias Spector, who frequently represents Marc’s connection to his past and how he wrestles with really complex questions of religion and identity, is dead by this point of time in both of Marc’s established origins, and while I am sure the organizers of Marc’s funeral, like Marlene and Frenchie, fully and deeply loved him, I’m just not sure if Marc ever communicated to them what they should specifically do for his funeral (fully traditional or as small/nondescript as possible if he even thought he deserved/would get a funeral), as enigmatic and….not always forthcoming in discussing such matters Marc circa Marc Spector: Moon Knight was, so they did their best.

But gosh, even as I write that out, that’s such a load of copium. I’ll admit that my fondness for the comic book genre results in me desperately trying to hammer something worthwhile out of sometimes (or frequently????) mediocre material, so thanks again for sharing your thoughts! You are well and away within your rights to not be satisfied with how the matter was handled and I know I thoroughly appreciate your critical eye. Arguably, it is only by such a capacity for critique that the industry will ever shake off some of its worst aspects that still haunt it and evolve into something really consistently worthwhile.

Read one of your astro observations and it’s kinda true to me about the MC degree. Aqua MC at 11 degree and that was the time I realised that people perceived me differently, I was the weird kid, and that is the age where I had slowly started to stand up for myself and not take shit from anyone- by that I mean anyone. I started building my boundaries cause if I hadn’t I would be tormented and bullied by these people who think they have written the rules of societal norms and how a person should always stick by them no matter what. I did obviously in the start- but no matter what I did I was always an outcast- if I am intelligent but fat- no importance- if I look good but then I’m not that smart again- no importance was given to me no matter what I did- so I started to be super nice and let people walk all over me so that I feel `accepted’ and `loved’ and as `somebody who mattered’ but at the price of my mental and physical well being. Lost weight to be acceptable- started wearing clothes that made ME uncomfortable so that I can feel accepted- started hanging out with particular people even tho they never considered me as their own so that I can feel accepted.. but in return I never got anything- I was never anyone’s best friend- never invited to birthday parties or hangouts- never anyone’s first choice- at one point it felt I was left out on purpose. Of course I wasn’t gonna have any of this so I just decided fuck it and started to do what I wanted- I was also in a depressive zone for a long time with emotionally abusive and absent parents. I started skipping school(for obvious reasons), eventually got bad grades(of course I didn’t do it on purpose) stopped going out to get fries hair cause I would get stared upon for being `depressed’ eventually I gained 2x the weight I had lost and was back to square one. Instead of being by my side and helping me- the people who I thought were my ones- started tormenting me- instead of being asked why and how this happened- I was beaten and humiliated publicly for what I had become. I was physically assaulted by my uncle for behaving `weirdly’(weird behaviour clearly being the signs of depression and anxiety thanks to the years of bullying not only by kids but also adults) and then my parents doing nothing about it and my mom saying that I deserved it. Unfortunately again, I thought there was something wrong with ME and not my abuser’s and I went back to how I was- a people pleaser. Thankfully the train of realisation hit me again at 16-17ish where I had enough of this bullshit- I was treated like shit even before and even now- so why bother to cater to anyone else and live life according to my own terms cause fuck everyone. I’m 18 now and realised my worth- idc if people like me or not- idc if people like what I pursue/study and do what tf I want to do it’s not like they pay my bills, tuition fees. Even since that realisation, no one has dared to say anything to me which is wonderful. And idc if I get a slightly bad grade and what people would think of me - 2 yrs back I failed 11th grade and now I’m an international Med student from 3rd would country in top 50 unis in the world hahaha. Happier than evr

My advice to other Aqua placements who felt like an outcast would be don’t bend to the norms and rules of other people if u feel uncomfortable it will be your downfall. Your success lies in your individuality

A good concept which I’m always up for, but to be honest with you I’m more of a fan of the other way around :O like, Kiri is so good and bright and friend with everyone, jealousy might as well be something Bakugou’s used to by this point - but Bakugou, people tend to avoid him or think of him as rude and annoying, Kirishima wouldn’t be used to jealousy at all you know? I wouldn’t call it an artblock, it’s more like… like your mind is one step ahead of your skills, I’d say. If treated right, you can turn that feeling into improving your art! What is it that you don’t like? Can you break it down to smaller things? Is it the line work or the coloring style, or even just the way you draw eyes or hands or noses? If you can focus on the smaller parts of what you don’t like in your style you can then look up a way to do the same thing that you do like, and practice that till you’re satisfied with it! One small thing might not mean much by itself, but putting all these small things together is how you make improvement happen :D

EXO’s Chanyeol meets with fan?

Last night, photos of a certain idol meeting with a woman at night were posted on a blog. Since then, the photos have been removed from that site, but you can see them here. Chanyeol is wearing a black hoodie in an attempt to avoid being recognized but his face is clearly visible in the photo.

But, the photo is taken from opposite Chanyeol, so we can’t see who the woman is.

Okay so I tried this thing

The blog that posted the photos? I traced it to a dead facebook account that had a few leftover posts. Aaaaand in the photos section, there’s a screenshot (unrelated) where in the corner you can see this icon

Which is for HideMe VPN. I cracked up, HideMe is The Worst VPN ever, this person must WANT us to find them.

So HideMe is specific to Korea, I know that much. And it offers five countries to hide your IP: the USA, the UK, Netherlands, Romania and Japan.

Coming to the next part of my plan: the SS blog has a pageview counter! So we can see who’s logged on and when. I’m going to monitor the pageview counter and see if there are any visitors from the HideMe countries. There are actual legit visitors from these countries I know, but I'm going to see if any of them correspond to the hate comments. I’ll update with progress as I go!

It’s been a couple of hours and a lot of you have messaged me wanting to help, so thank you, guys! So far we have 130 hits from Japan (lol good luck with that), 30 or so from the USA, and 12 from the UK. I’m trying to see if I can message S and ask if anyone has sent anything recently.

Since this is a stalker anon I’m guessing they’ll be obsessively checking S’s blog, and since they’re from Korea obviously and S is also from Korea, they’ll most probably be checking from about 9am to 12am KST (UTC +9), because that’s when S is online. Sorry, my psych major is showing, hehe. I’ll try this and then update.

Update: S replied to me! She said the blogs oo3043j and ssih943 have both been messaging her pretending to be the ‘stalker’. They’re both empty bot-like blogs but I’m looking around for something I can use to track them.

I’ve created a fake tumblr to follow both of those blogs, because they like every single one of S’s posts and I can try to get a read on where they are.

Okay! Update, finally. I’ve narrowed it down to three IP addresses that have been the most frequent visitors from the mentioned countries. A little bit of hacking (shhh, I learnt it in my White-Hat course, I’m a licensed ethical hacker FYI) and I’ve confirmed that one of the three users is from Seoul! It has to be them, otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to stalk S irl - she lives in Seoul. Thank you guys for all your help! I couldn’t have done it without you!

On S’s request, I’ve investigated the stalker’s profile and identity. StrawberryStalker is 19-year-old Lee Da-eun from Seoul, and on top of harassing S, she’s had three warnings for public misconduct and another two for underage drinking. She’s a sasaeng fan of EXO’s and has been seen at several of their showcases with “hate” signs. She stalked EXO’s Sehun for a month when she was sixteen and spied on their dorms with a camera, which she was given disciplinary action for. You might have also seen k-articles about her leaking the dorm photos on her twitter.

“Jia, it’s blood, oh my god, I just threw up blood, what do I do?”

“Okay, calm down! Do you have any other symptoms?”

“I feel really lightheaded, and...and…It’s hard to breathe...”

“Oh god. Y/N, hold on, I’m calling an ambulance.”

“No! I’m fine!”

“You are not fine, you’re throwing up blood!”

“I…”

“Y/N? Are you there?”

“Y/N?”

“Hang on, Y/N, the ambulance is on its way-”

You opened your eyes and immediately shut them. The light was too blinding. Groaning, you braced yourself and tried again.

The first thing you noticed was the cannula in your peripheral vision. Then, the steady beeping of something in the background. A pinch in the crook of your left elbow, which was held straight by a strap at your wrist.

“She’s awake.” You tried to lift your head to find the source of the voice, but the movement was too hard. “Her face looks fine. Blood is clean. Blood pressure slightly below normal, but within the limits, so she should be fine. You don’t need to worry.”

“Oh, thank god.” That was Jia. “Can I go in?”

Something else was murmured, and then you heard two pairs of footsteps walk in and stop by your bed. An unfamiliar face leaned over you and pulled down your eyelids to examine your eyes.

“Jia?” You croaked after the doctor had leaned away.

You felt her hand slip into yours. “Y/N. Hey. You’re okay now.”

“What happened?” Your throat felt ripped open and dry. You coughed. “Can I have some water?”

The doctor muttered something to Jia, then walked away. Her fingers rubbed soothing circles into your palm. “Cyanide poisoning, Y/N. You were extremely lucky you survived.”

Your world stopped. “Poisoning? Cyanide?”

“Yes. Someone messed with your food at the fanmeet.”

You couldn’t wrap your head around it. “...Fanmeet.”

“Yesterday. You’ve been in the hospital for a day and a half. You were in a coma by the time they got to you. It was still soon enough that they could find out it was cyanide poisoning. If they hadn’t got to you in time, you would have died.”

“Died?”

“Mhmm. They couldn’t find out initially because I told them you had been throwing up blood. Turns out the blood and the stomachache were because you also swallowed glass powder in your food.”

Your blood ran cold; you felt dizzy. “It was the stalker?”

Jia shifted closer. “Lee Da-eun, right? She was at the fanmeet. It was her. I’m sorry, Y/N.” She sighed. “In a way, she also saved your life. If she hadn’t put in the glass powder, you wouldn’t have noticed something was wrong in time.”

You groaned again. “Jia, that’s not a good thing.”

“I know! I didn’t say it was. Hey, are you sure you want to-” She winced as you shifted, moving stiffly, avoiding the IV sticking out of your arm.

With great effort, you sat up, leaning on your pillow. “I’m okay.” Then you looked to your right and froze. Slumped in a hospital chair, fast asleep, was Chanyeol, his hoodie pulled up over his bright red hair and his gangly limbs hanging off the seat. “What’s...what’s he doing here?”

Jia gave you a soft smile. “He came to see you,” she said. “He’s been here all night.” You glanced at the clock - it was three in the early morning. Despite your fight, despite his busy life, had he really come here to see you?

“Tell me I’m dreaming.” At that, Chanyeol stirred. You watched as he blinked his eyes open and nearly fell out of his chair, scrambling back up at the last second.

He met your eyes. “You’re awake.” His voice, deep and raspy from sleep, gave you an involuntary shiver. He looked at Jia. “She’s awake.”

Jia smiled knowingly. “I’ll leave you alone.” She stepped out quietly, shutting the door behind her. Now it was just you, Chanyeol, and an awkward silence.

You cleared your throat and started to speak at the same time as he did.

“Thank you-”

“I’m sorry-”

You both burst into laughter, him into a nervous chuckle, you into a tiny giggle that ended with a cough. “You first,” he said, eyes gentle, smile gentler, as he looked at you.

You blushed. “Thank you for coming to see me. It means a lot. I know we weren’t in a good spot, and you’re busy, but you still came. So thank you.”

“I would have come even if I was halfway around the world. I mean it.” He meant it. “I’m sorry I was rude to you earlier.”

You snorted. “You? Rude? Yeah, and I’m part of EXO.”

Chanyeol grinned, eyes twinkling. “So I’m forgiven?”

“There’s nothing to forgive.” You smiled back.

A moment passed. “So, are you going to tell me that important thing?”

Again, you felt heat rush to your face. “I, uh. I was thinking a lot. And…”

“And…?”

“Ilikeyouback,” you said quickly, the words slurring. “As in. I like you, the same way you like me.”

You hadn’t seen anything more wonderful than the happiness that dawned on his face like the sun. His grin grew impossibly wider, his eyes turning into little half-moons. “You do?”

“I do.” You bit your lip.

“Well, now I really hate myself for not listening to you earlier.”

You laughed, patting the side of the bed. “Come here.” He obliged, moving his chair closer until he was at the edge. You held out your hand, and he took it.

“I think we should start over,” you said slowly, and he nodded. “Hi, I’m Y/N, and I’m your biggest fan.”

“Hi, Y/N. I’m Chanyeol. What a coincidence, I’m your biggest fan too.”

I really hate to announce this, but in the light of what’s happened, I have to. I will be leaving tumblr to focus on real life and making SS better. However, I’ll still be posting on WEBTOON. After today, this blog will be deactivated. 

To answer the hundreds of questions piled up in my inbox, here’s a small FAQ: 

What happened? Long story short, I was poisoned by the EXO sasaeng who’d been stalking me and C for the past month. She’s in jail now. I’m not in any more danger from her.

Am I okay? Yes! If it weren’t for some incredible doctors, I would be dead right now. I was in the hospital for a few days, but now I’m much better and I’m back at home, ready to crank out the next few chapters of SS!

What about C? Let me just say that YoonJin isn’t the only ship that’s sailed. C is, in fact, Chanyeol from EXO, and here is an interview where he officially announces our relationship! I’m excited to see where it goes, and for the next episode of my life. 

What now? Well, the next update of SS, of course! It’s up on WEBTOON!

SURE I’m glad you liked those! Everything by Memphis is A+ and I love it so if you haven’t you should check out more stuff by them ( No Ordinary Love is super nice, That’s Just Life is very dear to me and so is Divinity, Speechless is… my otp song for every otp ever tbh) -  Bring Me The Horizon is my fav post-hardcore band and both MMF and Chiodos are that genre so if you don’t know them give them a try! (Blasphemy, Run and Doomed are between my faves out of the latest album, and since you liked Under Your Halo you’re probably gonna like Follow You too) the album right before is amazing too if you’re okay with less melodic stuff, but the further back you go with BMtH the harder to listen to they get, just a heads up - Sleeping With Sirens are on the softer side of post-hardcore lately, Fly, Left Alone, Trouble, Fire and Empire To Ashes are some great ones, between the many, and, uhhhh, at this point I might have recced Nothing More a hundred times but let’s make it a hundred and one, try Funny Little Creatures, Do You Really Want It and Go To War out of the newest album! If you’re into punk and female voices you should check out Tonight Alive too, Jenna has one of my two fav female voices in rock right now (Crack My Heart and Temple are the latest two songs out!) and since I always rec stuff but I never rec anything by my favorite band ever, you ever heard of Alter Bridge? LMAO this was about this one right? I’m sort of a fool honestly cause as I drew it it… didn’t feel actually all that angsty to me? I mean, obviously it doesn’t come after anything happy, but they’re working things out! Making an effort! Loving each other enough to try and understand each other better!! More than headcanons for them I have an incredible amount of scenarios I’d like to see them in! It’s not a stupid question, don’t worry!! But I generally like to leave myself in Horikoshi’s hands for this sort of stuff, since I both enjoy the costumes as they are AND don’t want to be disappointed in case what I hope for doesn’t actually happen - that said, I’ve mentioned before that I’d really like Aoyama to get redirectors for his laser on his palms and for Kaminari to get a close combat weapon, since with the quirk he has anything metal would actually work wonders for him! He mentioned a sword, but I rest my case that tonfas would be cool, I really want him to use tonfas. A “costume” I don’t understand is Hagakure’s, by the way - would be nice if she got an actual costume and also I don’t really get why she’d wear gloves at all?? Mirio’s costume was made using his hair, I really want her to get something similar! That’s about it tho, I haven’t really thought much about anyone else in that sense~
