💧The Religious & Cultural Significance of Water💧
Water plays an important role in Songkran, in that there is a religious significance to water splashing and pouring alongside all the festivities. As mentioned in our What is Songkran? post, the Thai New Year is closely tied with Brahmanism influence and Buddhist practices, so people will make merits at the temple. Making merit is a process in itself that is composed of many factors, but it generally refers to offering donations towards a particular cause and involves “...some sort of force that can lead to positive results in the life of the donor. As you donate, you will expect a benefit in various forms, especially improved karma. That is, merit making can influence the next lives of an individual as well as the destination where such a person will be reborn.” Thus, making merit is a part of Songkran, in which it becomes an opportunity to “practice [merit making] by giving to the monks support of a more material kind, especially food…” or listening to sermons (Merit: Buddhist Concepts).
Visiting the temple during Songkran also consists of สรงน้ำพระ, or song nam phra, which is the ritual bathing and cleansing of the Buddha statue with nam ob. While the ritual can be done at the temple, many people bathe Buddha statues in public places and in their homes as well. Doing so is symbolic of purifying oneself for the New Year (Thai Embassy).
Being it is a time for celebrating with family, Songkran also means paying respects to older family members or elders in one’s life. This is done through the water pouring ritual, รดน้ำดำหัว, or rod nam dam hua; a younger family member will pour scented water on elderly family members’ hands to pay respect and receive their blessings (Thai Embassy). The following video shows a more detailed walk through of preparing the nam ob and the members exchanging blessings:
The water pouring ritual is also done to other older people who may not be related, such as mentors or coworkers.
Tumblr media
Beyond religious significance, Songkran is famous for its massive water fights; water splashing is done to signify good fortune in the New Year. Friends and families take up water guns, buckets, bowls, and anything else that can be used to drench someone else. Public water fights take place all across Thailand, and the vlogs in our previous post show just how many people take part in them. It is safe to say that everyone is fair game once the water fights begin, but if you want further visuals, you can check out Golf Pichaya’s vlog below:
youtube
Golf and his brother, Mike Angelo, spend Songkran 2019 together with water fights, masks, and dancing. The vlog has footage of large crowds, in which almost everyone is equipped with a water gun before the brothers go back to their room and have a water balloon fight.
We also recommend listening to BRO WHAT NOW?!, a podcast by Mikael and Mathias Lao as they reflect on their teen years and celebrating Songkran in Chiang Mai. They reminisce getting into trouble with drunk festival goers, playing with machine water guns, pacing themselves over the three days, and other fond memories.

I adoreeee Poom, of course, who doesn't?
But sometimes at the silence of the night, I got myself thinking how amazing would be to have Kao Noppakao as the first Joe/ZhouXiang.
It would convey better the idea of the novel to use 2 different actors. Is a important part of the story how ZhouXiang has to deal with a new younger and "prettier" body, just like it is to the other characters, especially Ming. It's a fact that makes the whole narrative of the novel!
And it would be amazing to have KaoUp again! They already have the chemistry! Even if in the novel the first ZhouXiang is described as not being pretty enough ( Kao is gorgeous!), but we could let it slide, since we're doing it with Poom anyway. Kao could make a great first Joe, just like Poom would be the perfect second/rebirthed Joe, and not the first that he's doing. I know some "shippers" would get wild about having having two "different pairs" as the same characters, but it was the way the novel was wrote and it would make such a distinction from other series, it could be a new experience for the bl universe.
And I really miss kaoup 😿
I can dream... And dream only, since the serie is already finished 😔.

🌸Vlogs on Songkran🌸
While reading information about Songkran is useful, many Thai creators and vloggers walk us through Songkran in different parts of Thailand. Take a look at some of these videos to learn more!
What have we done in a provincial during Songkran? by ChawbanDoo
In this video, ChawbanDoo takes us through what he does in Singburi during Songkran. The vlog, which spans a few days, shows key components of Songkran, such as shopping and preparing for the holiday, bathing the Buddha image with nam ob, and water pouring with family members. Food is also central in this vlog: mu kratha and other dishes are shown. Finally, he pans to “playing Songkran,” which is him mostly watering his plants and then kids splashing cars with water.
Songkran Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand by Thailand Travel
youtube
Thailand Travel’s video is on Songkran 2023 in Chiang Mai. As described, the video “highlights… the colorful parades, traditional ceremonies, and playful water fights. The parade of Buddha statues is one of the most important activities in the Songkran Festival in Chiang Mai. People believe that throwing water on Buddha statues or others will bring good luck to Buddha statues, others and themselves.”
ก็มาศิวัช EP.1 เมื่อศิวัชเล่นมุขเสี่ยวเที่ยวสงกรานต์ (Episode 1 Vlog) by Mark Siwat
youtube
Mark’s first vlog, Gor Ma Siwat, takes place on Songkran Day 2019. The day begins with the water pouring ceremony with his family. Afterwards, Mark shops for a Songkran outfit, looking through several floral and Hawaiian shirts and, as he stresses, a waterproof bag for personal items. Finally, the blog ends with some tips for the water gun fights (and other antics) at Siam Square’s Songkran Festival.
Battle Trip | 배틀트립 – Ep.93 Songkran Water Festival VS Thingyan Festival by KBS WORLD TV
youtube
In this 2018 episode of Battle Trip, one team of travelers attends Songkran and the other attends the Thingyan Festival to see which is the superior festival. In the first half of the video, the team travels to Chiang Mai to join the water fights there. Other important details are highlighted here, such as transportation during the holiday, smaller shops being closed, how to refill water guns, shopping at markets, street vendors, etc.
Tawan the Wanderer, EP. 6 by GMMTV
youtube
GMMTV’s series Tawan the Wanderer has a 2019 episode dedicated to Songkran. The video opens with some basic information about the Thai New Year before transitioning to Tawan going to markets to get flowers for the temple and celebrations. The video includes Tawan near Wat Phra Singh (a prominent temple), conversations with people in Chiang Mai about the festivities, and Tawan’s family as they cook food and spend time together.

I will never understand thai yt channels with interfans, that release new videos without subtitles and eventually MAYBE add some few hours till few days later 😭
It’s tragic for us but it also doesn’t make sense for them and their view count? That’s so very uneconomical for a business that lives from social media and clicks. Like half of the interfans don’t check in every few hours if they added subs now. At some point we just drop the clip or forget about it.
Unless they are trying to farm comments from interfans begging for subs. Don’t know if that’s worth it.
