BREAKING NEWS: Gym Challenger Arrested in Petalburg City
By: Yumi Hirai
Published: December 1st 2023
PETALBURG CITY: An investigation is under way after a gym challenger was caught on camera at Petalburg City Gym attempting to knock out Gym Leader Norman after their battle. The Petalburg City Police Department is looking into trainer Skipp Normansson's past, claiming his previous ties to Kanto's Team Rocket may provide insight into his harsh training methods and violent outburst.
Subscribe to Channel 3 News Network—Petalburg for more local, late-breaking news!
[The video opens up on two news anchors in a newsroom. They both have their hands folded on the table in front of them, and are looking into the camera with the level sternness typical of the profession. No emotions are betrayed, only a stark sense of professionalism.
Anchor 1: Good afternoon, I'm Calvin Murrow.
Anchor 2: And I'm Astrid Stax. Today, gym spectators and league staff were both shocked to see a different type of battle break out in the arena—a battle that led to the arrest of the challenger.
Calvin: That's right, Astrid; police apprehended 21-year-old Skipp Normannson after the young man attacked Leader Norman in broad daylight. We're live on the scene with Reporter Twig Milwaukee where investigators are saying they expected nothing less from the trainer.
There's a brief pause as the camera switches to a lone reporter in front of the Petalburg Gym. There's a crowd behind them, as well as several police cars and a blockade preventing people from entering the gym. The distinct bark of Manectric can be heard as some people try to get a closer look. After a moment of silence to ensure that they're live, the reporter begins speaking.
Twig: Good afternoon, Cal. It's just like you said, the police have been keeping their eye on this particular league challenger for a while now. According to them, this isn't Skipp's first run-in with the law—and they don't expect it to be his last. The trainer is currently under arrest for assault and battery, but his list of charges is expected to increase as the investigation continues. While authorities may have expected this outcome, gym attendants were shocked.
The camera switches to a young woman with a Whismur in her arms. The Whismur looks as nervous as any member of the species, but it doesn't seem to be in any true distress, the earmuffs on its head insulating it from the noise of the surrounding crowds. It's trainer fidgets with a thin, nervous smile, shifting her weight back and forth as she struggles to maintain eye contact.
Woman: (...) It's definitely not what I expected to see.
The camera then cuts to the empty arena of the Petalburg Gym, slowly panning around and showing different angles of the ongoing police investigation as Twig provides a voiceover.
Twig: That sentiment was echoed by many spectators after witnessing the brutal attack on Leader Norman at the end of Trainer Skipp Normannson's gym challenge this afternoon. Delilah Rodriguez has been watching the gym challenges here in Petalburg since she was a child and, according to her, she has never witnessed an event like this. And she's not alone in her shock.
The camera cuts back to the woman as the interview continues.
Woman: Norman is a pretty level-headed guy. Sure, I've seen gym challengers get upset at a loss, or even just get really fired up in battle, but I don't know what would possess anyone to fistfight Norman of all people.
The video then cuts to a clip of Skipp and Norman standing in front of each other on the arena, credited to the Petalburg City Gym. Norman seems to be giving Skipp a lecture, though it's unclear what he's saying . He keeps gesturing to one of Skipp's pokeballs as the younger man gets visibly more and more agitated, gritting his sharp teeth and narrowing his eye into a tense glare. Then, Skipp explodes, throwing a left hook directly at Norman's head and drawing startled cries from the crowd. The two exchange blows for a few seconds before gym staff intervene and separate them.
After a while, it switches to displaying a slideshow of images taken throughout the battle—most of which involve Sora the Cubone in various battle scenarios seeming wildly outmatched. As it plays, Twig provides commentary.
Twig: The altercation was reportedly started over a disagreement between Skipp and Leader Norman on his methods of training his Cubone. According to the leader, he had been seen throughout the gym challenge forcing the pokemon to battle despite signs of extreme distress, refusing to switch her out until the leader knocked her out. The footage from Skipp's gym challenge is currently under investigation by local and League authorities.
Norman: Unfortunately, I did see this coming.
The video feed switches to Gym Leader Norman, who seems as stern as ever as he gives a short interview. His face is visibly bruised on the right side and there's dried blood on the corner of his mouth, but he doesn't seem to even feel it.
Norman: Skipp showed himself to be an aggressive, unstable individual from the moment we first crossed paths a few months ago. I was hoping this journey would even him out, but... It seems he hasn't earned that second chance.
The camera then cuts over to an Officer Jenny. Her arms are folded and her eyes are narrowed into a glare as she speaks.
Jenny: We shouldn't have let him get this far. We knew he would be a repeat offender, and it's a failing on our end that we didn't keep an eye on him and stop him before it came to this.
The camera cuts to an overhead shot of a Manectric lying by the Jenny's feet. It has a bandage around its torso, whining as it recovers. After a minute, it switches to some stock footage of Team Rocket grunts in Kanto.
Twig: According to official reports, Skipp has had a storied history with the law. A Kanto native, he has an existing criminal record under the name Shigeki Kugihara. Just earlier this year, he finished serving a four year sentence for his crimes committed while in Team Rocket. These crimes ran the gamut from petty theft to gang assault. The records state that he has had a long history of delinquency starting as early as thirteen years old.
The footage then cuts back to the Jenny, who somehow seems even angrier than before.
Jenny: His previous history with Rocket is a likely contributor to his mistreatment of pokemon—his own and others. That poor Cubone has multiple compound injuries built up over what would have had to been at least a week of training outside of its limits, not to mention he kicked Sparky here in the ribs while we were apprehending him. Fortunately, his journey ends here. For everyone's safety.
The footage then cuts back to the newsroom, where the anchors are still sitting there with those neutral, level expressions. A few moments of silence pass as they endure they're on air before speaking.
Astrid: Skipp is currently facing several charges including assault and battery on a League official, as well as several counts of pokemon cruelty. Though his case is still being built, he is currently at risk of facing a minimum of 20 years in prison, as well as possible deportation back to Kanto. We will keep you updated as this story progresses right here on Channel 3 News Network—Petalburg.]

Happy Heavenly Birthday King 👑😇🕊️🎉🎈
Tumblr media
Remembering the great singer, songwriter, actor, and composer, Isaac Lee Hayes today on what would have been his 81st birthday. He was one of the creative forces behind the Southern soul music label Stax Records, serving as both as an in-house songwriter and as a session musician and record producer, teaming with his partner David Porter during the mid-1960s. Hayes and Porter were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of writing scores of songs for themselves, the duo Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas, and others. In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 🙌🏾🙏🏾🕊️🎶🖤🤎

Hey Mark, Been playing for almost 30 years, love the care, thought and work you and your team put into the game. Always super cool to hear your thoughts on design - thanks for being such a fixture in the community and making the game great. Regarding treasure in Commander - I feel (in my own personal experience as a player) that treasure has gotten really ubiquitous and sort of warped the flow of the format. The best part of the magic experience is having such a diverse pool of tools / cards to draw from to solve specific challenges and problems, but I've found that as a player looking to start actively punishing treasure in my metagame (I play with close friends at our respective houses regularly), the tools don't really seem to be there yet to fully do this. Any word on whether their may be a bit more effort towards providing better treasure-hate tools in EDH on the horizon? I'd love to see a couple commanders and other cards that indirectly (or even directly) punish this strategy. I'm at a point where I'd run Mayhem Devil as a commander if I could and Magnetic Mine is starting too look a little juicier every day, but I don't want to resort to running full on turbo stax cards like Stony Silence or that-one-Karn just yet as these are my friends and I still want everyone to play the game and interact. *End polite request for more medium-power, not-too-staxy treasure hate*
I hear your request for more Treasure hate cards and will communicate that desire to the rest of R&D.

Today’s compilation:
Rhythm & Blues: 1967 1991 R&B / Soul / Funk
Man, an album like this should just remind you how much of an abundance there was of terrific R&B and soul joints that were floating around throughout the 60s and 70s. And back in the early-to-mid-90s, Warner and Time-Life Music teamed up to release a series of compilations that would document some of R&B and soul's greatest hits from that era, dedicating a CD's worth of tunes to each year from 1955 through 1976. And this release, as you could guess from its title, takes on the very important year of 1967.
1967 was the year that birthed, quite possibly, the single-greatest hit in the entire history of the rhythm & blues genre: "Respect," by Aretha Franklin. Not only is it just a stunning knockout punch of a song that officially launched Aretha Franklin into the stratosphere herself, but it's also a song that was sewn into the fabric of both the feminist and civil rights movements for equality. It's a song that marked a paradigmatic shift for the course of popular music, but it also played a much more important role in serving as an integral part of the soundtrack to US societal progress. It is completely indispensable.
And that's what this album dutifully kicks itself off with, followed by another enormous hit in Sam & Dave's "Soul Man," which was co-written by Isaac Hayes after he was inspired by what he saw during a riot in Detroit, in which the black-owned buildings that were labeled with "Soul" were left intact.
Almost every song on here is fantastic, but those two are especially important, because they wound up transcending the goal of just being good songs. Other tunes on here were definitely sonically superb, but they weren't nearly as politically potent, and weren't intended to be anyway.
But on here you'll find an entire grip of R&B and soul tunes that made 1967 what it was: a deluge of Motown, a stack of Stax, a handful of Atlantic (led by two Aretha Franklin hits, of course), and a smattering of successes from some much smaller labels.
Nearly all of these tunes were huge commercial smashes too, but a couple of them still remain a little bit obscure. For example, Freddie Scott's "Are You Lonely for Me" topped Billboard's R&B chart, but it barely scraped the top 40 on the publication's Hot 100. And it was only one of two songs in Scott's entire career to make the top 40 in the first place, released on producer-executive Bert Berns' small subsidiary label, Shout Records.
And another relative obscurity is the album's plaintive closer from Toussaint McCall, whose "Nothing Takes the Place of You" proved to be the most successful single of his career, reaching only #52 on the Hot 100, but #5 on the R&B chart. Released on Ronn Records, a sublabel of Shreveport's Jewel Records (a label whose compilations I have a lot of), its combination of McCall's foundational organ and piano, and his soul-reaching, resigned despondency, makes it the most unique song on this compilation, as the others tend to be far more unreservedly fiery, upbeat, and/or lovey-dovey. And it's also a staple of some of my very own soul playlists, like my 1960s one and my Louisiana one. (Note: it’s mistitled and misattributed on Spotify as “Making Nassau Fruit Punch” by African Music Machine, so if you go to follow those playlists and don’t see “Nothing Takes the Place of You” on there, that’s why 😅.)
Ultimately, this CD only has 22 songs on it that end up clocking in at an hour, but you'd probably need a multi-disc release to really capture all the R&B and soul greatness that took place in the year of 1967. This is still an excellent place to start if you're something of a novice to this excellent classic music, though.
Highlights:
Aretha Franklin - "Respect" Sam & Dave - "Soul Man" The Esquires - "Get on Up" Martha and the Vandellas - "Jimmy Mack" The Temptations - "You're My Everything" Gladys Knight & the Pips - "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" Otis Redding & Carla Thomas - "Tramp" Aretha Franklin - "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" Aaron Neville - "Tell It Like It Is" Four Tops - "Bernadette" Jackie Wilson - "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher)" The Bar-Kays - "Soul Finger" Freddie Scott - "Are You Lonely for Me" Wilson Pickett - "Funky Broadway" Arthur Conley - "Sweet Soul Music" Cannonball Adderley - "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" Linda Jones - "Hypnotized" The Supremes - "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone" Peaches & Herb - "Close Your Eyes" Toussaint McCall - "Nothing Takes the Place of You"

Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis
The fact that a white girl from London managed to make an album that sounds exactly like something from the Motown or Stax catalogue is nothing short of amazing. The meticulous choice of songs, producers, and backing musicians is definitely a part of it, but none if it comes together without Dusty's beautiful husky voice. Son Of A Preacher Man was written so thoroughly in the style of Aretha Franklin that she cut her own version of it just a couple years later.

Sly & The Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin' On
Oh how things change in only a few short years. The bright and bubbly psychedelic sounds of Sly Stone's Stand is long gone and in it's place is a dark brooding groove machine. The peace and love hippie movement was dead and Sly Stone was spending more and more time with the Black Panthers. Tensions in the band were high. The resulting album is tense and pessimistic with deep tight grooves that drive the songs. The bass lines are twangy and crunchy, the melodies phased out in favor of chaotic harmony and counterpoint. There's A Riot Goin' On is one of the greatest masterpieces of funk.

Beyoncé - s/t
Beyoncé Knowles was already a great musician, but her fifth album marked a change in the scope of her music. Every song has an accompanying video, which is neat and all but I'm here to review the music. Thankfully the music is very good. Beyoncé is fairy thematically tight keeping to an idea of beauty theough imperfection. This is explored through the lens of relationships mostly, the negative and positive emotions that can arise and how to deal with them. Its refreshingly human. A lot of the songs slowly expand over time into broody epics, and some fall into the very 2013 trend of triumphantly epic melodrama. Beyoncé is a great album and the start of an era in her career that, imo, would keep getting better.
Tumblr media
The Sex Pistols - Nevermind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols
Vulgar, crude, idiotic, with no sense for good taste or a coherent political statement. Nevermind The Bollocks is a horrible album made by horrible people. It's also a fantastic album and a complete game changer for punk music. Johnny Rotten is a tasteless idiot who doesn't know what anarchy is, but he also plays loud obnoxious music that captured the imagination of other loud obnoxious teens. I think an appreciation for base and stupid things is very important, especially when when they have the sincere energy of Nevermind The Bollocks. And I realize that it isnt clear from the test of this review, but I do like this album.
Tumblr media
Frank Ocean - Blonde
It's actually unbelievable that Frank Ocean followed up Channel Orange with an album that even remotely approaches its greatness. I could see it being a tossup for someone as to which one is better, but I'm personally on team Channel Orange so I think that ranking Blonde above it is a misstep. That said Blonde is an amazing neo soul masterpiece. It manages to keep the languid pace of its predecessors while bringing in some more psychedelic influence and a lot of songs use the slow pace to play around with a few ambling avant garde soundscapes. Also, and this is a weird thing to note but, Frank Ocean actually gets a really good verse outta Andre 3000. I love me some Outkast but Andre tends to phone it in on guest verses and he brings his whole ass to Solo (Reprise) and I think its partly because Ocean actually hands him a beat he can work with. Basically this is a man who commands respect even among his elders. People want to work with Frank Ocean and the results speak for themselves.

hey lyss! i know u follow the na and emea valo scene and im also a fan of fnatic, but do you have any pacific teams you like? personally im a fan of prx and drx!
Unfortunately I’m not nearly as familiar with the pacific teams because their broadcasts are at ass o’clock in the morning for me and I’m normally passed out when they happen 😭 however I really like DRX and Global Esports a ton, DRX were fucking hilarious when they brought c9 down at lock//in and I loved listening to skrossi’s insight during the vitality (?) game during lock//in and the team seems really chill!!
Also those two had a funny little april fools’ prank where GE pretended to acquire Stax and Foxy and DRX posted they were leaving and everything it was awesome 🫶

The Cinelli Brothers live at Breda Jazz 2023 from Ton van de Merwe on Vimeo.
The Cinelli Brothers is a project born out of a common passion for the electric Chicago and Texas blues from the 60s and 70s, when brothers Marco (guitarist and lead singer) and Alessandro (drummer) decided to form an explosive team showcasing original repertoire in the style of Chess, Stax and Motown.
Joining the two brothers on stage, Tom Julian-Jones on harmonica, guitar and vocals and Stephen Giry on bass, guitar and vocals.
In September 2022 the band won the UK Blues Challenge. In January 2023 the bank ranked number 2 at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, US.
The Cinelli Brothers champion a new generation of passionate musicians sharing in the love of Blues, Soul, R&B and the true authentic sounds that have made the blues a cornerstone of music history.

Reposting here to keep things organized.
A little Au I came up with (that's probably already out there somewhere because nothing is original anymore), that I'm calling 'Reversed Fates':
When Zane tried to master Reflected Glory, Kai would take the fall and be exiled instead. Zane is angry that Kai would do something so stupid but that anger is eventually turned inward as he begins to wrestle with the fact that it was his fault for being so arrogant and reckless.
Basically, instead of Team Stax being made up of Kai, Maya and Boomer, it'll instead consist of Zane, Maya and Boomer (the name 'Stax' being in honor of the friend Zane lost so long ago). In the same vein, instead of Team Radikor being Zane, Zair and Techris, it'll be Kai, Zair and Techris (the Zair/Kai shippers are doing a happy mambo).
Most everything stays the same, except that Zane is more of a team-player than he is in canon. He's also a lot more critical of the team's mistakes, since he doesn't want the 'Reflected Glory' fiasco to happen again. He and Boomer also butt heads a lot, as Boomer blames Zane for Kai being exiled.
As for Team Radikor, Zair will take over Zane's position as team leader (just not as power hungry as her brother). Kai's more of the team's strategist, coming up with his usual hair-brained schemes. He's not exactly evil, just a little arrogant.
A lot of things'll change in season 2, since I'm planning on incorporating my Battacor centered fic in this Au too. Especially that cliffhanger ending that is still driving everyone nuts.

The "Press and Play"list version (click the links for music and extras) songs/22 playlist
Tumblr media
1. Elvis Costello -“Farewell, Ok”: A garage rock burner with a bit of the attitude that made E.C. the dean of the class of ‘77. 2. Band of Heathens - “Carry Your Love”:  A monster hook, and every time I hear this it, it makes me think of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. That's a good thing. These guys also released a cool Covid covers album this year. 3. Nikki Lane - “First Time: On-the-rise outlaw rocker recalls her 80's high school rock roots. It features my favourite lyric of the year: "Take me back to the first dream, 501 blue jeans, tighter than god damn Springsteen”. 4. Lucuis- “Next To Normal'': Produced by Brandi Carlile, this deceptively funky tune has been in my head for months. 5. Khruangbin/Leon Bridges: From "Texas Moon" the lone star state collab and follow up to 2020’s "Texas Sun". The adventurous and vibey, Khruangbin have become one of my favourite bands. 6. Lizzo - “It’s About Damn Time”: "It’s bad bitch o’clock". 7. Elle King - “Honky Tonk Disco Nights'': Been listening to Elle for a while now as an emerging star in Americana/Country world. But on this one she makes a left turn teaming up with Chic’s Nile Rogers on this country/disco mash-up. "Dance, dance dance". (Hollywood Fun Fact #1: Elle the daughter of comedian and former SNL cat member Rob Schnieder). 8. Say She She- “Pink Roses”: Slinky cool and danceable, this Brooklyn based female trio love Nile Rogers too. So much so, their band's name is a sly nod to his group. "Yowsah, yowsah, yowsah". 9 .Stone Foundation - “Heaven Knows Why”: Smooth disco grooves and wah- wah guitar from UK soul revivalists. Bell bottoms and platform shoes not included.
Tumblr media
10. Dreadzone - “Dread Town”: The eternal spirit of 2-Tone lives on this bouncy single from veteran British reggae/dance outfit featuring lead vocals by Emily Capell who borrows the style of Amy Winehouse and the attitude of Lily Allen, on a joyous celebration of London's multi racial musical melting pot. 11. Pearl Charles -“Givin it Up”:  Last year I stumbled on Pearl’s brilliant ABBA inspired “Only For Tonight” and was subsequently blown away by the whole album. She’s back again with another lush and luminous 70’s styled single whose swirling strings, memorable hook, and slyly funky finish made it one of favourites of the year. (Hollywood Fun Fact #2: Pearl is the daughter of Larry Charles ofSeinfeld/Curb fame). 12. The Dip - “Real Contender”: Big horns and big hooks from a Pacific northwest band that gives me Jamie Cullum vibes. 13. Mapache - “Light My Fire”: Cosmic folk rock harmonies for your mellow mood. 14. River Kittens - “Hate To Break It”: Speaking of harmonies, this break-up torch ballad sounds like it came straight off Shelby Lynne’s country/soul masterpiece, “I Am Shelby Lynne”. 15. The California Honeydrops - “In Your Arms”: More soul horns and a chugging Stax rhythm from Oakland outfit who sounds like they may have been fans of Oaktown homeboys Tony! Toni! Tone'! 16. The Harlem Gospel Travelers - “Nothing But His Love”: Nope, this is not a gospel tune, just some sweet vintage styled soul and harmony in praise of a higher power. 17. Miko Marks/Ressurectors “Feel Like Going Home”: Rising star Miko Marks and the guys may actually get closer to church on this one. Her album has blues, country, and gospel influences, think The Staples Singers and The Band on the "Last Waltz, All of which reminds me there was a pretty great posthumous release this year from the late Leon Helm and the very much alive Mavis Staples.18. Lee Bains + The Glory Fires - “(In Defense of the) 40 Hour Work Week: Blue collar country rock in the spirit of The Drive By Truckers.
Tumblr media
19. Titus Anddronicus - “Give Me Grief”: A jangly, angsty pop anthem from post punk Jersey boys. 20. Pinegrove - “Alaska”: More catchy indie pop from Jersey (Montclair!) 21. Wet Leg - Wet Dream: Isle Of Wright indie pop duo exploded on the scene last year with two great singles, "Chaise Lounge" and this one. A proper album was released in '22, so the song still qualifies, and I get to make up for missing them first time around. 22. Hurray For The Riff Raff - RHODODENDRON: Always moving in new directions, Alynda Segarra and crew are back. This time they bring the spirit of The Velvet Underground with them. 23. Melissa Carper - “Ramblin Soul”: Old-time Texas Swing from the woman they call the “The Hill-Billie Holiday”. 24. Taj Mahal/Ry Cooder - “Hooray Hooray”: Roots rock veterans and former Rising Sons bandmates reunite over 50 years later to pay tribute to blues legends Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Hooray Hooray indeed. 25. North Mississippi AllStars - “See The Moon”: These guys have always drawn on the southern rock and blues they grew up on. The connection runs deeper on this album with the addition of Lamar Williams Jr, son of former Allman Brother Band bassist Lamar Williams. 26. Wilco - “Falling Apart” (Right Now): I’ve enjoyed all of Wilco’s sonic explorations over the years. but If I’m gonna be honest, I always loved their early alt country outings the most. 27. Reigning Sound - “Lonely Ghost”: This long running Memphis garage rock band broke up late last year…but they released this Dylanesque single early this year. So, have they “ghosted” us or not? Either way, it’s the final rattle of a hard working band at the end of the road, but going out defiantly.
Tumblr media
28. John Doe - “Never Coming Back”: Former X-Man John Doe reminds us you can’t go home again in this dark, moody song with a memorable hook that will stick with you and your subconscious. 29. Valerie June - “Use Me”: No, not the classic Bill Withers tune, (it actually has the opposite sentiment), She has an idiosyncratic vocal style, but like Bill Withers, Valerie June is the real deal. 30. Deslondes - “Good To Go”: A charming world weary tale of hard luck and never giving up. 31. Billy Swan - “Don’t Be Cruel”: Season two of “Euphoria” opened with this haunting 1974 cover of the Elvis classic and it blew me away in much the same way the show does. I couldn't stop listening to it for weeks.
If you got this far...thanks for checking it all out. I appreciate you. Hope you all have a great holiday season and I look forward to seeing you in the new year. Peace, Doug

History Short #2: Lee Roberts (Arthur Conley)' Sweet Soul Music
Today I'll be discussing a great gay singer from the 1960s. When you read that sentence, your thoughts may immidiately be drawn to Little Richard. There was another, underrated artist. His name was Lee Roberts.
Tumblr media
How He Got His Start:
In the year 1946, the man formerly named Arthur Conley was born in Mcintosh County, Georgia. At the age of 17 he would head an rnb group named "Arthur and the Corvets." They would release three unsuccessful singles which would spur Lee to pursue a solo career. In 1964, he would release "I'm a lonely stranger." at the baltimore based label "Ru-Jac." This song reached the ears of and impressed a man by the name of Otis Redding. Otis insisted that Lee re-record the song at his up and coming "Jotis" label. Its easy to why Otis was impressed by this tune. It features a lot of vocal Versatility by Lee. Starting with a very smooth and soft delivery before Lee reveals the soulful raspyness of his voice.
A Massive Hit:
Lee became a friend and protégé of Otis Redding and by 1965, they had worked together on another track called "Who's Fooling Who" The Otis Redding influence is very clear when you hear this song but its not derivative at all. In 1967, Otis and Lee would revise an earlier Sam Cooke song called "Yeah Man." With the help of the Stax production team, they would transform the twisting beat of yeah man into a more modern but still danceable anthem for soul music and as such it was titled "Sweet Soul Music." The song would sell one million copies and reach #2 on the RnB charts. The best thing about this song is that it gave the world one of Lee's greatest live performances. (it starts at 8:11)
dailymotion
This performance shows the high energy, powerful vocals and wonderful crowd control that Lee possessed. When you watch Lee perform you are watching a legendary talent with impeccable footwork. After this massive success, he would release a cover of Big Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll" that would also be a success to a lesser extent. Tragedy would strike in 1967, when his mentor and friend Otis Redding would die in a plane crash in which there was only one survivor. James Alexander of the original Bar Kays. This would not shake Lee's career but it would sadden him so deeply that he released a tribute song called "Otis Sleeps On." Its a very moving song.
Later Career and move to Europe:
Lee would have several hits until 1970. After his other releases failed to chart as well, he moved from the US to England before settling in the Netherlands. He would then change his name from Arthur Conley, to Lee Roberts. Combining his middle name and his mother's maiden name. For the rest of his life he would tour with a new group called "Lee Roberts and The Sweaters." He would also start the "Art-Con" prcduction company. Lee passed away in on November 17th, 2003 from intestinal cancer.
Why Wasn't He More successful?
Lee and many other people believed that his homosexuality prevented him from being even more successful and it was a big reason that he moved to Europe. Which is sad cause he was supremely talented and I believe he should be mentioned a whole lot more.
ON ANOTHER NOTE DONT EVER LET THESE DUMBASS REACTIONARIES PRETEND THAT QUEER PEOPLE ARE MODERN OR WHITE ONLY PHENOMENON!!!!!
