Why Grim Kennet Doesn't Tell The Jedi Council About Darth Sidious
Tumblr media
Grim has multiple opportunities to tell the Jedi Council about Sidious. Never once does she tell them. But for every single time, there is a reason behind it.
Opportunity 1): Grim's first appearance
When Grim talks to the Jedi Council for the first time, she tells them that there is something she wants to prevent, but doesn't elaborate any further than that.
"No," said Grim. "Since I'm here, I want to try and prevent a terrible ending from happening," she told him. "I want to save as many lives as possible, if I can. I don't care that I could leave things as they are, if there's even the slightest chance that I can save lives, change the ending, then I can't pass it up."
- The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part I: The Calm, Chapter 1: In A Galaxy Far Far Away
This would have been the golden opportunity for her to tell the Jedi Council about Sidious and Order 66. From the very beginning she had the perfect chance. But she never says anything about it. Why?
Well to start: Grim is a 14 year old teenager who just had her life completely changed. She is in another universe. A universe that was supposed to be completely fictional. A universe that she has grown up adoring.
It isn't real for her yet. It takes her an entire year for her to really process the fact she is in Star Wars. And that facing this, she is in a real war. And there are consequences for everything. And all of this danger that was fictional is actually real, and is a danger to her.
By this point in time she's only been in Star Wars for a few hours. She hasn't fully processed being in another universe. It's still just a story to her. Telling the Council here would break that immersion in this story.
Grim even admits that she hadn't fully processed the fact of being in another universe when she became a Jedi later down the line:
"....When I first decided to become a Jedi, I was awestruck, and yes, I was certain then when I made that decision, the fact that I may never return, I didn't consider that. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret it for an instant…but I can't help but wonder about everything I left behind in favor of this life."
- Grim Kennet to Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part II: The Clouds, Chapter 14: A Secret Kept And A Secret Told
It was still fictional to her. She hadn't considered everything. She was awestruck. To tell the Council about Sidious would break the immersion of the moment. A moment where she was awestruck and at the same time just not fully thinking through it all.
In fact, the idea of Sidious and Order 66 and telling the Jedi Council about all of that, it didn't occur to her at that moment. All she knew was that she wanted to be a Jedi, because that was a childhood dream she didn't think would ever be possible because Jedi weren't real. Now suddenly they were.
Tumblr media
Opportunity 2): The Deception Arc
Grim's second opportunity to tell the Jedi Council is ironically enough when she had planned to do so.
With Obi-Wan faking his death to protect Palpatine, it upset Grim. She wasn't told about his mission, and understandably so. However she felt that because she would have known about it no matter what, and the Jedi Council was aware of this she should have been informed. This leads her to come up with a plan out of spite.
Obi-Wan was trying to protect Palpatine? Well, then, what if the truth about the Chancellor came out? There’s more than one deception at play, Master. And I can see through every one of them.
- Grim Kennet's thoughts, The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part III: The Rain, Chapter 20: The Moment Of Truth And The Moment To Lie
However, this plan goes horribly wrong. Rather than just telling the Council about this, she feels it would be best to gather evidence first. Which under usual circumstances, would be a smart move. However she is dealing with a Sith Lord, and is only a teenage Padawan. (She's 16 by this point in the story.)
Outside of this her entire plan is built in anger. This isn't her wanting justice against Palpatine. She's angry with Obi-Wan and the Council for keeping the plan hidden from her when she would have been aware of it either way.
She doesn't even have a full plan for this. Grim just breaks into Palpatine's office with the hopes that she can find proof he is a Sith Lord. Proof that she can take to the Jedi Council.
But Sidious catches her. And this is very important, because this encounter is the reason she continues to not tell anybody. She gets caught by Darth Sidious, the most powerful Sith of that time. And it scares her.
She barely manages to escape the whole situation alive. The only reason she even survives is because Sidious is curious about her, because he's been suspicious and already knows a few things. She's lucky to escape.
When she runs into Windu she has the opportunity to tell him about what happened. But she's terrified of what Sidious might do. So she lies about how she got hurt.
A week after Obi-Wan returns Grim faces Sidious again. This time things go even worse. She gets a scar, and she ends up telling Sidious about being from another universe. And it terrifies her. She's afraid of Sidious doing something to hurt the people she loves.
She should tell someone about what had happened, but what if Sidious did something?
She couldn't think straight. She didn't feel safe on this roof. What would Sidious do?
- The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part III: The Rain, Chapter 21: Scars And Ghosts
So she's afraid and her fear holds her back from telling anyone anything. Not about Palpatine being a Sith Lord. Not about fighting Sidious. Not about how she got her scar. Her fear controls her, and for every other opportunity her fear overpowers her.
Tumblr media
Opportunity 3): The Jedi Council learns Grim has fought Sidious
On Mandalore Grim teams up with Maul against Darth Sidious. This plan fails miserably. Obi-Wan has to rescue Grim from him. In the process he learns that this isn't Grim's first encounter with the Sith Lord.
When they return to the Jedi Temple, they immediately speak to the Council about what happened. And Grim is completely honest. She tells them that this wasn't her first time fighting Sidious. And she tells them what happened in her previous encounters with him. That he knows she's from another universe.
Grim tells them everything.
Except she doesn't tell them who Sidious is. And when she's asked about his identity she freezes. When Yoda tries to convince her to tell them before she shouldn't be dealing with any of this alone Grim just tries to shift the blame to Obi-Wan for the fact that he went to Mandalore without the Council's permission.
But it doesn't work. Eventually Grim admits she's afraid.
“I’m scared.”
“And you’re allowed to be, but don’t let this fear cloud your judgment.”
“I know that, but…” She didn’t have an excuse.
“But what?” asked Obi-Wan. “What exactly is it that you’re so afraid of?”
- The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part III: The Rain, Chapter 27: Cracked Hearts
And Grim doesn't tell them. But it's revealed through her thoughts:
That Sidious has planned this too.
Grim is afraid that Sidious has planned for to go to the Council. Especially after the fact that it wasn't just her that escaped him this time, but Obi-Wan as well.
By this point in time those first two encounters with Sidious had happened a year ago. He has had time to plan for Grim. And that's what she's afraid of.
And she has a reference for when Sidious has counted on the Jedi Council being told about him. The entirety of Order 66 was set in motion by Anakin telling Windu that Palpatine is Sidious. Here Grim is afraid of the exact same thing happening because of her.
Tumblr media
Opportunity 4): Windu asks Grim about Palpatine
In one of the most infuriating moments in all of The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Grim has the best ever opportunity. She gets directly asked about Palpatine.
As the Jedi left the Chancellor’s office Windu stopped Grim and pulled her to the side. “Padawan Kenent, a moment.”
Grim looked at him confused, “what is it, Master Windu?”
“I noticed how uncomfortable you were with the Chancellor.”
“Okay?” she asked, still confused. “I just don’t like him.”
“Grim, this isn’t the first time I’ve noticed this. When Master Kenobi was informing the Chancellor about Maul-”
“What are you saying?”
Windu sighed. “You know things, Grim. Is there something the Council should know about the Chancellor?”
- The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part III: The Rain, Chapter 29: The Final Chance
Here she is, directly asked, by Mace Windu himself, the golden opportunity handed right to her.
And yet, she says nothing.
Why?
It's because of everything else that happened earlier in this chapter. This is not a moment where fear wins. This is a moment where Grim has given up.
This entire chapter followed Grim trying to save Fives. She helps him to gather proof. All her hopes rely on him. But when they reach Palpatine it all goes downhill.
She has been immensely traumatized by her previous encounters with him as Sidious. And it shows. There is a point where Grim's PTSD is triggered, and Palpatine sees it.
Later Grim joins Anakin and Rex to help find Fives desperate to save him. Everything goes wrong. And before Fives is killed, Anakin says something that really affects her.
“The Chancellor isn’t capable of what you claim."
And Grim is right there to hear this. A person who has been tortured, scarred, traumatized, and nearly killed by Palpatine. Hearing Anakin not believe Fives about him being involved in a plot against the Jedi hurt her. And her faith in herself about being believed about Sidious.
And then Grim watches Fives die. And by this point he had become her last hope at stopping Order 66. At stopping Sidious.
She's at the meeting afterwards too, having gotten involved in everything. And Palpatine uses that against her. Manipulates her. Because she had panicked earlier and had protected him over Fives. And he knows she wouldn't have done that. So he's adding to her guilt, preying on it. And he knows now how much he can affect her because he saw how traumatized she is because of him. He's trying to break her down. And he succeeds.
So when Windu asks her about him. She can't bring herself to tell him. Because she has been broken down.
And because of that she believes it is too late.
Tumblr media
Opportunity 5): Revenge Of The Sith
After rescuing Palpatine, Grim comes clean about the terrible events she wants to stop that she told the Jedi Council about when she first arrived. However she doesn't tell them how it happens. Again it's because of her fear. She's afraid it's too late. She's afraid that Order 66 can't be prevented.
She tries again the next day to overcome her fear. She speaks with Yoda, but she still can't bring herself to tell him everything.
Obi-Wan tries to get Grim to talk to him multiple times. But again her fear continues to win. Her fear leads to her downfall.
She spies on Anakin and Palpatine, she could tell Anakin about him then, but she doesn't. She feels she has already lost him to the dark side.
And after all of that. She gives up.
Her fear wins.
And she never tells anyone. And it's too late. Because the next day it's Order 66.
Tumblr media
Conclusion:
At first it was fictional. Grim hadn't processed the fact she was in another universe, not fully. The idea didn't even occur to her at the very beginning.
Then she encountered Sidious. And she was terrified of him. And her fear won again and again. It kept winning until she herself lost.
Grim was afraid, and traumatized, and a kid. That's why she never told anyone. Even though she knew she should.

I already wrote a literal essay about this on my writing/art blog but I think it's important to note that the reason Grim doesn't tell anyone about Palpatine being Sidious or about Order 66 is because of fear. She's a very emotionally driven character, and even though she knows she can't handle things on her own and she should tell people, she's also very scared.
Grim knows what Palpatine is like and how he acts. She's scared of the power he has and how he could turn whatever she says around. She's scared of accidentally causing something she wants to stop. Her fear often gets the better of her so even when she knows she should tell people she doesn't.
Grim's fear is her greatest weakness, and ultimately is her downfall.

I'm having thoughts about this parallel again.
Also with the way Grim words it as questions. "Or has it been the light blinding me?" "Who cares if there is more darkness?" As in how she is currently questioning her faith in the Jedi because she is so far in her anger and grief. She hasn't fallen, she's dangerously close, but right now she is in just so much emotional turmoil that all she can do is question things.
Meanwhile Anakin is making statements, not questions. "I see through the lies of the Jedi." "I do not fear the dark side as you do." He's already fallen. He is a Sith Lord. He is Darth Vader. He is justifying what he has done. The crimes he has committed.
I don't know, I was just thinking about this again.

By all accounts Grim should have every advantage and be able to succeed with everything she knows. But what's important to remember is that she's a teenager who was thrown into another universe and suddenly dealing with a war. That's going to mess someone up.
She knows all of the logical choices: Tell the Jedi Council about Order 66. Tell them about Palpatine. Tell them about Anakin. Tell them about all of it. Tell somebody.
But Grim isn't going to make logical choices.
At first it isn't because of fear. She wouldn't have any reason to be afraid. She's completely star struck. These are heroes from her favorite story. And for a little bit Star Wars is just that. A story. And the people she's interacting with are still just characters to her. She wants to play this game of pretend in a world that doesn't exist. So she doesn't tell anyone because that would break the story.
Then Grim realizes it's reality. And that's when it scares her. Because the story being real also means the danger is real. The villains are real. Everything dark about the story she doesn't want to face is real. And it isn't a story. This is her real life. And she's afraid of that.
And as she tries to navigate with that and conquer her fear - she slips up. She gets caught by Darth Sidious. And Sidious knows about her. The most dangerous person in the galaxy knows about her. And Grim knows how Sidious works because she knows Star Wars. She knows the danger that puts her in. So she becomes afraid to say anything. Because she's scared of Sidious.
And she's facing a war. And she's a kid.
Grim isn't going to make logical choices because at first she's a kid who has found the story of her dreams and then because she's a teenager who is afraid.
So even though by all accounts Grim should have the advantage. And even though Grim knows she should tell people. She won't. She's a scared kid trapped in another universe and fighting in a war meant to break the entire Jedi Order. And she's a kid.
Grim is a scared kid, so she isn't going to make the logical choices. Even when she knows what they are.

Grim's character arc during Revenge Of The Sith is so compelling to me.
At first she's being strategic and she's calm and you can see how much she's matured since the beginning of the story. She has a plan and isn't going to allow her fear to hold her back any longer. Except she slips up with that plan, and that was the last time she would have that chance. She's now terrified of the ending that she knows will come. Except she refuses to let that fear show. Especially not when her enemy is so close. So she hides it behind jokes. She banters with Obi-Wan and Anakin as she always does. She isn't even afraid to sass Palpatine with a smile.
Grim and Obi-Wan reach the Jedi Temple to make their report to the Jedi Council. Grim has decided to tell them everything about the future. They need to know. They're the only ones who can help her and change the ending now. But when she begins to explain her fear catches her again. She wants to tell them her heart is screaming to tell them but her mind and its fear chokes her. She runs away, unable to say how the ending happens. Just that if things don't change then the Jedi Order and the Republic will fall.
This fear pulls her back from everything. And it's not unnoticed. Obi-Wan and Yoda can see it. They want to help her but she won't let them.
When she's around Anakin her fear becomes anger and she directs it at him for the man he will become in just a few days. She doesn't see Anakin at all. She is speaking to Darth Vader. He is already a Sith Lord to her.
Grim tries to train away this fear and this anger. Tries to ignore it. To escape it. But she can't. There's a voice that whispers to her that she's failed. She has no proof of this, but she believes it.
With that belief she begins to grieve all that will soon be lost. It isn't gone yet. But to her it is, for there is no changing the end. It's already over. And yet the light still reaches to her and a small part of her still has hope. Because Grim does not know who she is without it.
Grim spies on Anakin and Palpatine to know if she really has lost. To learn if the dark voice that whispers to her is right, and she has failed. She watches Anakin become entranced by Palpatine's story and it confirms it for her. She loses all her hope. The dark won. She has lost.
And Grim is so lost, so hurt, so betrayed, so terrified, and so broken by this revelation. She doesn't see the point in even being alive anymore. The story can't be changed. Living or dying it changes nothing. She changes nothing. So she runs to the roof of the Jedi Temple. She plans to jump, but the light holds her back. The fact that there are still Jedi right here and right now keep her there. Instead she watches the sky.
Anakin joins her and the two of them talk about the future to come. Anakin wants to believe things can change. Grim has lost hope and sees him as the man that will destroy them both. She says it's too late for them. And with those words spoken it is.
The next day is the day where she really will have lost everything. Grim has no hope. She can only find it in Obi-Wan. She is convinced she will die because her story is left unknown. She has nothing to prove that she'll live and she has everything to prove she'll die. And now faced with the real possibility of it, Grim realizes she doesn't actually want to die. She begs Obi-Wan to not let her die.
Grim sees Boga and suddenly she's back in the beginning in the war before all of her scars before everything was painful. She's 14 and starstruck by Star Wars again. And she is filled with such joy she forgets about Order 66. She forgets her worries. She forgets all of it.
While fighting Grievous at Obi-Wan's side she loses herself in the battle. Focusing only on it. Her worries and fears aside.
But it's not to last.
"You must realize, army or not, you are doomed," says Grievous.
And Grim knows he's right. Suddenly she's aware of all the clones. She's aware of how close Order 66 has become.
They defeat Grievous and Grim is afraid. She's never been so afraid. Obi-Wan tries to talk to her but she shuts him out. She refuses to let him in. To let him see how ruined she is.
Order 66 begins. Grim is terrified and forces herself to run. She has to survive. Except she gets surrounded and again she believes she'll die. This time she does not face death with fear. She welcomes it. She jumps off the cliff so it will not be her brothers and friends that kill her. And when she hits the water she is ready to accept she will die. She's lost. What does it matter?
Except the light reminds her there are more survivors and there are people who could use her and that there's still hope and a reason to fight and so she fights back and she survives.
Only to wish she didn't. She lost. She failed. Why does she get to live? The grief and the guilt of everything crashes down onto her all at once. Seeing the ruins of the Jedi Temple is too much. It becomes anger again because she knows exactly who is to blame. The man who had slayed them. So she leaves to kill him blinded by this twisting rage.
And again she fails. But she refuses to fail. She refuses to die. She is angry and she is determined. But as she's fighting by Obi-Wan's side again she becomes afraid. She can't win. She can only live. But, she realizes that's enough. So she focuses on surviving the battle, not on killing Anakin. There's nothing more than can be done.
She leaves Anakin to survive Mustafar because there is still that anger in her heart. But she's calming down now. She's accepting the support of the light and turns away from all the darkness that keeps threatening to consume her.
Grim becomes a Jedi Knight. She is filled with grief and feels so much guilt for surviving and getting this honor. But there's another thing too. Grim has hope.
And with that hope she knows she can heal again.

I think Grim seeing the ruins of the Jedi Temple was her breaking point actually.
And it's not like she was suddenly going into Sith mode or something. Grim has known about Order 66 for the entire time she's been in Star Wars. She's had that weighing down on her for literal years. She's always been afraid of that happening - which is what led to her not telling anyone about it. (Which I already wrote an essay on so I'm not going to get into that in this post.)
Grim has been constantly hit with failure to change things again and again even before we get to Revenge Of The Sith. She is failing over and over. And eventually there reaches the point where she's away with Obi-Wan and Anakin for a long time. And she's lost track of her progress on The Clone Wars but she knows they've left Season 6 territory and that Season 7 happens at the same time as Revenge Of The Sith during the Seige Of Mandalore Arc - something that she has no point of reference to figure out exactly how close it is. All she knows is that Order 66 is approaching and it is approaching fast. So all of her usual worry and fear has just gotten worse and worse. In fact it's very noticeable to Obi-Wan and Anakin (although neither of them know why, and Obi-Wan can only have his suspicions because she won't talk to him).
On the way to the ship Grim was brimming with joy. Anakin and Obi-Wan both noticed the sudden shift in mood of the young padawan.
Since the Outer Rim sieges had pulled them away from their home Grim had been swirling with fear. She seemed to be anticipating something awful was going to happen. Now her stress and fear had nearly instantly dissolved.
- The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part III: The Rain, Chapter 30: A Reunion.
And while yes this is describing Grim being incredibly happy, it's a sudden shift in her mood. She hasn't been like this in a while. She's been anticipating the execution of Order 66. She's been incredibly afraid this entire period of time between Chapters 29 & 30.
And all of this is likely a couple of months before Revenge Of The Sith even starts. And when Grim does get to the news she instantly begins to panic again because she's absolutely terrified of Order 66.
So anyways. We get to Revenge Of The Sith. Grim's fear has never been worse. Again she fails to change things. There are only days left. She's desperate. In fact she's so desperate she even contemplates killing Anakin to stop Order 66.
For the slightest moment Grim considered that she could stop Anakin’s turn to Vader right here and now.
She could shove him off this roof and he would fall to the ground dead.
- The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part IV: The Storm, Chapter 35: Checkmate
She hesitates to kill him though because she still sees him as her brother. And yes she is absolutely fully willing and attempts to do so without hesitation the next day - but you also have to consider the extreme circumstances. And we'll get to that.
We also see Grim in a pretty dark place mentally in this scene. It's implied that she was going to attempt suicide while on that rooftop. She's already at the edge of her rope here. The only reason she doesn't kill herself in that moment is because she can still feel the light.
So. Already not a good place for her. And this is just the day before Order 66.
So then it does happen. And she spends the entire day up until that moment terrified of it. She's convinced she's going to die. So then Order 66 happens and she jumps (dramatically falls) off a cliff.
From this point she's just completely broken. She almost lets herself die, then decides not to, only to regret it because she feels she doesn't deserve to be alive. She's all over the place and is a grieving mess. She's just lost everything after years of trying to stop it. She literally gave up her entire universe and past life, and now it's all been for nothing.
Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Grim get to the Jedi Temple, and she sees what happened. And she's seen it before, but seeing it in real life is completely different, especially because she now actually knew these people. They were her family. And now they're dead and she knows who killed them. And she's known the entire time.
So that's her breaking point. Because she knows, and had known for all these years. And now it's happened. And it wasn't just that Anakin did this. Because she knew that. It's because Anakin did this and they were friends. He was her brother. It's not fictional. It's not even just the fact that it's real. It's personal. For her it's become personal.
And grief and pain can so quickly become anger. So she snaps. And she gets so lost in her emotions she's trying to justify what she's saying because otherwise she's just as bad as Anakin.
And it was all just too much for her.

Need, fire and DNA for the OC asks?
more oc asks
(Replying both as myself and as Grim for these because I said I wanted this as Grim however I can write a mini essay on two of these)
need: has your OC ever experienced desperation? how has it affected them? what do they do when something they need is out of their reach?
Grim: I have. It clouds me when I do, it messes me up. If I can't clear my mind I do not think. I have revealed secrets in desperate bids. I don't know what to do when what I need is out of reach. Sometimes I am just a fool.
Yes, Grim has experienced desperation. She panics in this state and makes choices she wouldn't make. She says things she will regret. She does things she regrets. Most notably her fight with Anakin on Mustafar. She had accepted the fact that she had failed. But she had one more thing she could change. She couldn't save the Jedi, and Anakin had fallen. So she went with the intent to kill Anakin in a mix of revenge and a desperate attempt to change something. If she could kill Anakin she could stop his future crimes. And because of her desperation it clouded her, mixed with her anger and it became just the mix to result in Anakin defeating her. If she had listened to Obi-Wan and Yoda she may have changed that fight so Vader would have been killed, but that ending was never known.
fire: what’s one thing they’d destroy if they could, and why? would that destruction bring them any satisfaction or catharsis?
Grim: Easy! The Sith! It would bring great satisfaction, and the Jedi would be safe.
If she could, Grim would destroy the Sith. I mean her whole goal is to defeat them, which in the best timeline destroy the Sith for good.
dna: does your OC believe in fate or destiny? what about soulmates? is this all a coincidence?
Grim: No. Destiny implies things are written. Fate is the same. Soulmates are another way to say that people are tied beyond themselves. There is no such thing as fate or destiny...and yet there is a reason behind it all. We write our own stories and nothing is set, but there is a reason for it. I don't quite know how to explain.
Okay I'm not going to lie I was hoping someone would ask this one because it is answered in tcwganv. I'm going to let Grim speak for herself again but this time through her story.
“Then is tragedy destined for us?” Anakin asked her.
“I do not believe in destiny, and I doubt you do as well, for destiny means life is written in stone. If we believe this, then why do we strive to save those we love from a terrible fate?”
-The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim, Part IV: The Storm, Chapter 35: Checkmate
Can you tell this is one of my favorite moments in the whole fic yet? Shippers keep your hands off my platonic sad tragedy moments or I swear-
Anyways as you can see from the above snippet Grim says herself she does not believe in it. However earlier she described the ending as being destined for tragedy, and in the next chapter thinks that to be true, it is not a case of Grim believing in destiny or fate but rather her devoid of any hope. At this point in the story Grim is hopeless. She is fully convinced that nothing can change now. All her chances had been spent. Continuing the conversation and ending it, Grim sets the ending in stone. Not because it was destined, but because she gave up.
Anakin lowered his head, he knew exactly what Grim meant. “Then it can be changed,” he said.
Grim shook her head, “it is already too late.”
Also fun fact that was the last thing she says to him before Order 66 :)
Anyways long answer short no Grim does not believe in fate or destiny. She spends The Clone Wars fighting against the concept, because the very idea of it implies to her that she would never win and was set to fail from the beginning.
