***
Onodera Ritsu was an easily flustered man. So, it was moments like this when his lover was asleep that he took the opportunity to admire him. Normally, Ritsu wouldn't be able to so blatantly stare without his boyfriend making some sort of comment. So, the brunette had to take what he could get. The aforementioned boyfriend, Takano Masamune, was very handsome after all. Not that Ritsu could ever let him know that. He already had such a big head.
Yes, Takano and not Saga, but Ritsu and his high school sweetheart hadn't suffered a breakup. In fact, his high school sweetheart was the one in bed with him right now. Unfortunately, Masamune's parents had gone through a divorce and Masamune found out the man who raised him was not his real father. Thus, the name change. It had been a difficult time, to say the least. It was not something either of them enjoyed reminiscing about.
Ritsu had been very worried when Masamune told him everything that happened with his parents. He was concerned not only for Masamune's well being, but also for their relationship. Masamune had the tendency to push everyone away when he was hurting.
Ritsu had been afraid of being annoying or making things worse, but he stayed by Masamune's side through the whole thing whether he wanted him to or not. There had been definite moments of tensions, moments where Ritsu thought Masamune might be slipping away from him, but in the end they got through it together.
The habit of carrying all your burdens by yourself was one that both Ritsu and Masamune had to overcome, neither of them used to relying on someone else during rough times, but a lot had changed over these past 8 years. That included Ritsu moving into Masamune's apartment after he graduated from his University. Masamune had offered Ritsu to move in with him much sooner than that and as much as Ritsu would have liked that, Ritsu knew he'd never get any schoolwork done with Masamune around.
Ritsu sighed contently as he watched Masamune sleep, reaching out to gently brush some of his hair out of his eyes. He smiled affectionately, his hand moving down to cup his cheek with a feather-light touch.
Masamune turned his head and kissed the palm of his hand, making Ritsu jump. "Good morning." He greeted gruffly, his voice rough from just waking up.
"G-g-good m-morning." Ritsu went to pull his hand away, but Masamune held on to it and continued to press kisses against it.
"Please, feel free to keep staring." He said between kisses.
"I was NOT staring." Ritsu quickly denied.
"Mm, you're getting better at lying. Should I be worried?" Masamune asked.
"Shut up." Ritsu said.
Masamune smiled tiredly. They both had today off, so he was looking forward to spending the day with the brunette. Both men worked as editors, Ritsu working for his father's company in the literature department and Masamune working for a magazine called Weekly Earth, but both of them were starting to consider leaving their positions due to trouble with coworkers.
"What do you want for breakfast?" Masamune asked.
"I thought it was my turn to make breakfast."
"I don't mind."
"Just say you hate my cooking." Ritsu said, making Masamune laugh.
"Yeah, I hate your cooking."
"Jerk."
"You know I'm joking." Masamune gave another sleepy grin. "But if you wanna cook that bad, be my guest." He said.
Ritsu sat up and stretched a little. "I'm gonna shower first."
"Is that an invitation?"
"No." Ritsu rolled his eyes, used to the casual perversion.
"What if I crash the party anyways?"
"Go back to sleep if you're gonna be annoying." Ritsu stood, his words holding no real bite.
Masamune laid there contently, watching Ritsu walk off to the bathroom before he rolled over to grab his phone. He scrolled mindlessly for a couple minutes before Ritsu's ringtone went off. He set his own phone aside to check the caller ID, wondering if it was An or another friend of Ritsu's that he knew.
Mom
Masamune frowned and rolled back over to face away from it. 8 years later and Masamune still hadn't met Ritsu's parents. Ritsu had met his mom in high school, albeit it was an accident. Masamune thought the two of them would be alone all night and his mom ended up coming home while Masamune was being very affectionate with Ritsu on the couch.
It had gone okay after Ritsu stopped losing his mind and Masamune had gotten over the embarrassment. Masamune didn't have a lot shame, but no one wanted their mom to walk in on them making out with their partner.
Kotoko had been certainly shocked at first and while she didn't love the idea of Masamune having a boyfriend, she was not going to try to get in the way.
Ritsu probably only saw her once more after that, but it made sense since Kotoko was not heavily involved in Masamune's life, if at all.
Ritsu's mother on the other hand...
Ritsu visited his parents' house about once a month, though somehow he managed to keep them from coming over here, and he got frequent calls from his mother, usually about marriage. That silly engagement between An and Ritsu had ended a while ago, but that didn't stop Youko from trying. She was starting to try to set up match making sessions as well.
Masamune sighed, some of his good mood stolen from him as he stood and put a shirt on. He then slid into the bathroom to brush his teeth, Ritsu already in the shower with the curtain closed.
"I come in peace." Masamune said before he grabbed his toothbrush.
"I didn't say anything!"
"Yeah, but you forget that you think way too loudly. You were definitely yelling something in your mind about me being a pervert." Masamune said, his tone giving away his amusement.
Ritsu just grumbled something intelligible as Masamune brushed his teeth. The older man actually kept true to his word and didn't jump Ritsu in the shower, even if he wanted to. Instead he left to go into the kitchen.
Masamune decided he was too impatient to wait for Ritsu to finish his shower, so he put on a pot of coffee before starting breakfast.
"You do hate my cooking." Ritsu said, coming into the kitchen just as Masamune plated the food.
"I didn't feel like waiting." Masamune shrugged. "You want coffee?"
"I shouldn't." Ritsu sighed. He was getting addicted to the stuff.
"So, that's a yes?" Masamune asked, already pouring the hot drink into two mugs, adding creamer and sugar to Ritsu's and leaving his own black. They sat down together, Ritsu thanking Masamune for the meal.
The two ate in silence, which wasn't unusual, but Ritsu could tell there was something on Masamune's mind. He seemed a little more spacey and there were no attempts to hold his hand or make any flirty comments, which just wasn't like Masamune at all.
"What's wrong?" Ritsu asked.
"Hm? Nothing, nothing's wrong, I was just thinking..." He trailed off, taking a deep breath and bracing himself for the response he might get. "You...want to marry me, right?"
"M-M-Marry you?!" Ritsu was glad he hadn't been drinking or eating at that moment because he surely would've choked on it.
"Yeah, not right now, I want to propose in a more romantic way than that, but like...you do want to marry me, right?"
Ritsu blushed a deep red. Masamune had to fight back a smile at the sight. It was nice to know that after so many years Masamune could still make him blush like that.
"Y-Yes, o-of course I want to marry you, b-but why are you suddenly asking about this?" He asked.
"...Your mom called while you were in the shower." Masamune said honestly.
"Eh?! Did you pick up?" Ritsu asked. Did Masamune talk to his mom? Not only that, but did Masamune talk to his mom about MARRIAGE?!
"No, I didn't, but I know she's always trying to set you up and it just made me start thinking about us." Masamune said. "I want to marry you, Ritsu. I want that more than anything in the world and honestly I want to do it soon. The only thing that could make me happier than waking up next to you is waking up next to you as your husband." Masamune paused briefly before he spoke again. "But, unless we're going to have some sort of secret ceremony...I need to meet your parents."
'A secret ceremony wouldn't be too bad, would it?' Ritsu thought. It sounded like a great idea! He was in no way, shape or form prepared for Masamune to meet his parents! Oh God, Ritsu felt like he was forgetting how to breathe.
"Hey." Masamune recognized that panicked expression, reaching out to hold his hand tightly. "It doesn't have to be today, tomorrow, or this week. It doesn't even have to be this month. And you have to remember that you're not alone in this. We're gonna get through this together."
Ritsu took a deep breath and nodded. As terrified as he was, he knew Masamune was right. His parents were constantly asking to visit his new apartment, his mother was still trying to set him up with women, and Ritsu wanted to take the next step in his relationship with Masamune. None of that would be resolved until Masamune met them.
"Okay...so, what's the plan? For when you meet them."
"I'll dazzle them with my charm, of course. Your dad will be begging to give me his blessing to marry you."
Ritsu laughed, making Masamune smile. "And if you somehow don't dazzle them and this blows up in our faces?"
"Impossible."
"I'm serious, Masamune...they could disown me." Ritsu's smile was gone now.
"I know. And if that happens, there isn't really anything we can do about it. But, in the end it's their loss and I think they'd eventually realize that." Masamune said.
"And if they don't?"
"I'm not gonna lie or try to sugarcoat it, it'll fucking suck. It'll hurt. You'll feel betrayed and abandoned and angry, but you won't feel like that forever. Trust me when I say you eventually stop caring about your shitty parents."
Ritsu took another breath and squeezed Masamune hand. "I'm visiting them for dinner next week. Come with me."
"You're sure you'll be ready by then?"
"I'll be scared, but...I want to marry you, Masamune. I've wanted to since I was a kid and I don't want to wait much longer."
Masamune couldn't help but to smile. "I love you."
"I love you too."
Once they were finished breakfast, Masamune insisted on cleaning even though he had cooked.
'If he does this too often I'll get spoiled.' Ritsu thought as he went back into his room to grab his phone. He went to 'missed calls' and dialed his mother back.
"Good morning, mom." He greeted when she picked up. He spoke quickly before she could go off on some tangent about some 'lovely young lady' she'd recently met. "About dinner next week...there's someone I'd like you to meet."

This is one of my first shounen-ai TV anime where romance is the primary (and practically only) element. I have watched things with canon gay relationships. I have watched things like Doukyuusei where romance is a primary element, and I’ve watched things like No. 6 and Yuri on Ice where romance is an element that adds to the actual story. I really enjoyed No. 6 and Doukyuusei. I hold both of those highly, and I just liked the story and relationships in both. I also kind of liked Yuri on Ice but to a lesser extent.
I usually prefer those where they incorporate romance into the primary story because that often gives characters more development outside of their romance. Keep in mind, I judge homosexual relationships the exact same as I judge heterosexual ones. Do I like the characters? Is there consent? Is this even legal? You know, the important questions. It’s rare for me to watch an anime with romance as pretty much the only thing going on in the show, and I find it a bit hard to find romance anime that I actually enjoy. With that in mind, as I watched the show, I kept a draft on my Tumblr to add notes about the show past episode three. I didn’t want to put this on my other “writing” blog because this is about to get even stupider than my usual babbles and rambles. I mean, *cough* I watched this because I saw who was on the cast and went, “You know what? This has an average score of above eight (out of ten). Let’s do this!”
Of course, spoilers (if you can even call them that) are ahead!
EPISODE 1-4: Ritsu Onodera x Masamune Takano
We have the main character Onodera became a bit jaded after his high school relationship didn’t work out. After graduation, he worked at his father’s company then decided to move after being accused (behind his back) of riding on his father’s success. He coincidentally gets employed with a company who has Masamune Takano... his high school crush. Onodera vowed to never fall in love again (bitch please) but this is now tested (don’t even try, he fell faster than a stack of dominoes in a tornado).
First, I just want to address Onodera’s really late realization.
Tumblr media
They’re the same person?? WHO WOULD’VE KNOWN??
Seriously, Ritsu Onodera loved Masamune Saga (as he was formerly known), made out with him, possibly did more, and somehow he forgot his voice, appearance, and not even a kiss reminded him? Bruh, that means he probably remembers him through sex?
Onodera (who forgot) demands to be apologized to? He does realize he forgot his former romantic partner from high school. This guy is 25, so this was a decade ago. First, this boy moves fast. Having a serious romantic relationship at fifteen? Wow. I’m not a fan of this couple (yet). So far, it looks like Takano is going onto this guy without consent. The other guy clearly doesn’t remember, so he shouldn’t force it. Any person would go, “Hey? Remember me? Yeah, I’m that person you dated a decade ago. Wanna get back together?” But no, let’s do this anime-style. By the end of episode two, they are neighbours. I happen to not mind this trope since it means sharing food is convenient. Food is essential to romance (to me anyway...)
After watching episode three, I’m going to say it again. CONSENT IS FRICKING IMPORTANT.
Seriously, they have a “surprise” kiss or whatever at least once per episode or so ratio like that. This continues for the next few episodes as well which is what’s coming up next!
Episode 5-6: Yoshiyuki Hatori, Chiaki Yoshino, and Yuu Yanase
Episodes four and five dealt with a different relationship. We got the common love triangle. As the thing suggests, there are three characters involved in this. Hatori and Yanase both like Chiaki, but Chiaki feels conflicted. He likes Hatori romantically but wants to remain as Yanase’s friend. He brings this up with his manga assistants (which includes Yanase who was absent at the time of this conversation). They basically roast the “hypothetical person” then suspect that Chiaki himself is the hypothetical person (and he is).
Throughout these two episodes, we find out that Chiaki and Hatori do confess to each other. The fireworks scene was kind of romantic. But I’ve never been a fan of the whole jealousy thing. I mean the whole “You were talking to another person, therefore I am mad!”
Another thing that annoys me? Dense characters. Fun fact: DENSE CHARACTERS ARE A GOOD 80% OF CHARACTERS IN ROMANCE ANIME (not an actual statistic; I just pulled it from my butt).
“I’m not in love with them!” You just made out. “They’re clearly interested in someone else!” They just said the whole “I love you. Please go out with me!” twice. “He’s just doing this out of the kindness of their heart.” No, he’s doing this out of the anticipation of his penis. Take a hint. “They don’t know how I feel!” Yeah, but you didn’t tell them anything either, so this is also kind of your fault. “It’s--it’s not like that! (Baka!)” We all know it’s exactly like that. Why does this happen so often?
There are so many cliche lines like this. I only named a few. The whole “Why do I feel like this?” to the “I’m sure they don’t like me anyway!” or the secondary love interest going to the main one saying, “Stay away!” Running away from your crush and problems while blushing really hard.
But I do prefer these three to the actual main couple oddly enough. Maybe it’s because they’re more about consent or because these characters move faster, who knows?
EPISODE 7: Ritsu Onodera x Masamune Takano
Back at it again with the same things! This is moving nowhere! We got the same secondary character going, “Don’t mess up Takano [main love interest] by falling in love with him” to the Onodera [the protagonist]. We’ve got the non-consensual kissing among other things that really shouldn’t be allowed.
EPISODE 8-9: Shouta Kisa x Kou Yukina
MyAnimeList calls these two guys “main characters”, but they didn’t really appear fully until this point. An editor (Shouta Kisa) and a book salesman (Kou Yukina) end up connecting since Shouta visits the bookstore every day. He’s stunned by Kou’s looks, but unfortunately, he doesn’t say anything because he believes that being only captivated by looks will get him nowhere. Kou’s very flirty, and by the end of this episode, they already kiss because Shouta was spaced out. You know, there are other ways to get a person’s attention without non-consensual kissing.
Of course, like all the main guys, Shouta monologues a lot. We’re talking about listening to all of his thoughts. Kou is far too smooth and is honestly straight out of a manga (as Shouta says). Nobody has that amount of perfect timing and that way with words. It’s unnatural.
Pretty much Shouta’s mood for these episodes
Tumblr media
[Video form]
He’s constantly saying things like, “God, I want to die.” or “I want to sink into the ground.” or “Kill me.” Honestly, that’s relatable.
Tumblr media
There are constant references to how this story is like a shoujo manga.
Tumblr media
He has done two spit-takes within the last couple of minutes. How does he still have any liquid in his cup? Is he just sipping an empty cup? If someone did that in my house, I’d clean up and send them out.
After that confession: At least they’re honest, but this guy is too smooth. I question the wording since he said that it was “Kisa’s fault that he kissed him [right after apologizing”, but he’s very up-front, and I give points to the fact that the main guy Shouta is 30. It’s not too often that we get a main character who is 30 or up. Plus, the relationship is actually kind of nice. There are a few rough patches though, so there’s some convincing this series has to do.
Episode 10: Yoshiyuki Hatori, Chiaki Yoshino, and Yuu Yanase
The episode starts off with a tired mangaka (Chiaki) with his assistant (Yanase). They’re caught essentially tickling/feeling each other up (because Yanase says Chiaki feels far too skinny and is not eating properly). Hatori sees them because fanservice and the other guy walking in is another cliche that’s gotta happen. Chiaki doesn’t even know why Hatori’s mad. He’s like, “Then why are you mad?” BRO, EVEN I’M NOT THAT STUPID. You can’t just be caught in a romantic act then ask your friend (who has confessed to you and it was reciprocated) why they’re mad. That’s like me shooting someone and going, “Why’re you mad?” But again, consent is important. You don’t take someone forcefully to your room and... you know? I don’t think it really went beyond that, but they didn’t show anything, and I also skipped soooo...
On top of that, he says to Hatori that he’s going to a hot spring with Yanase. IS HE EVEN TRYING ANYMORE? IS HE TRYING TO SCREW THINGS UP? MY GOODNESS, HE’S SCREWING THINGS UP.
Hatori gets annoyed and sends him home.
At the hot springs, things only get worse. Chiaki’s density is off the charts. I could literally hit him with a bat, and he would think it’s the wind. Going with your friend who is clearly romantically interested in you alone without your other friend... *omg why*
Then the whole episode ends up being a plot that Chiaki suggested. These events never happened.
EPISODE 11-12: Ritsu Onodera x Masamune Takano
*sigh* I’m just gonna say it again, CONSENT IS IMPORTANT. That is all. This is why they are my least favourite couple in this series.
Overall Thoughts:
I’m not a complete puddle of disappointment, but I... didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. Before going in, I had a preconceived idea of what people (including myself) think that shounen-ai is. But I heard this was different. I heard the writing is better, there’s more development, and it’s not as explicit. While it might be true, I’ve got to say that this fit the exact mould that I thought a shounen-ai would be, and I was disappointed a bit because I heard so much about it being “different” and how it was “really good”. The voice acting was okay. Even though it had a lot of my favourite seiyuu, I couldn’t help but feel that the directing could’ve been done better. The soundtrack didn’t stick, and the voice acting was directed in a way that made this the exact same as every other shounen-ai with nothing pushing the boundaries or expectations that I had set. On top of that, they tried to push for three couples at once, and I just wasn’t keen on that. I wish there was more consent in this show. Whether it’s be “surprise kisses” before a couple even confesses or “forcefully doing stuff”, it would’ve put me more at ease if they asked before.
I didn’t hate this anime. It was just kinda meh with slight dislike, and I really expected better after hearing so much about it. I do distinctly remembering watching the last few episodes thinking, “PUT ME OUT OF MY MISERY.”
Story: 4.1/10 Characters: 3.8/10 Art: 4.2/10 Sound: 5.7/10 Final Score (+ Enjoyment): 6.4/10
