Deltarune Chapter 1: The Official Undertale AU
Tumblr media
At 6:00 AM PST, on Halloween 2018, the official Undertale twitter account released what is essentially a demo for the next game by Toby Fox, deltarune. Between the baffling intro, the odd relationship with the original Undertale, and the implied involvement of a certain missing doctor, everything about this game was shrouded in mystery.
And I loved it.
(Spoilers and Review below the cut)
Part 1: The Story
Tumblr media
At first glance, most people assumed this mysterious new game would be a sequel (or possibly prequel) to Undertale. After all, it involves a number of shared characters, the titular rune was prominently featured in Undertale, and even the name “Delta rune” is an anagram for “Undertale”.
However, the relationship between the two is much stranger, and the plots are largely unconnected.
After creating an avatar and having the game unceremoniously throw it in the garbage, you play as Kris (that lovely person up there), the human child of Asgore and Toriel, and younger sibling to Asriel Dreemurr. Right off the bat, about a million questions are raised, especially since later conversations indicate Kris has at least been living with the Dreemurrs’ since they were too young to know their species, but we’ll come back to that.
Toriel drives you to school, though still get there late, and Alphys (who is your teacher here) puts you in a group with Susie, the only student to show up after you, to work together on a group project. However, when she realizes she doesn’t have any chalk, she sends the two of you to go get some from the school’s broom closet. You catch Susie eating chalk, she threatens to eat your face but doesn’t, and you head off to the broom closet.
Then things get weird.
Tumblr media
After that, it sort of follows a plot line similar to the original: you fall into another world, there’s a bunch of monsters you can either fight or spare, and you just have to keep going up and to the left to fulfill a prophecy & get to the exit, all while dealing with ambiguously evil characters who are more silly than dangerous. It is, however, a bit shorter, with only about ten unique enemies and only three areas in the whole game. But hey, it is technically just the first chapter, so what do you expect.
Of course, what really makes an Undertale is the characters. Since you’re in a different world for most of the game, the returning characters from Undertale don’t have much of a presence outside the very beginning and very end. Instead, we focus on a handful of new characters, all of whom are pretty well-rounded and developed, with the exception of Kris, our silent, somewhat-ambiguously-gendered protagonist. Susie, in particular, goes through a pretty nice character arc, going from someone who’d casually threaten to rip your face off and eat it, to an actual antagonist at one point, before eventually working her way back to being a good guy and someone you can actually be friends with! It’s definitely the strongest arc in the game so far.
There’s also Lancer!
Tumblr media
He’s a villain.
And not a skeleton.
Tumblr media
Just trust me on this.
Part 2: Presentation
Tumblr media
Just to get it out of the way, the music is fantastic. Of course it is. It’s an Undertale spinoff and, more importantly, it’s made by Toby “Radiation” “I could shit out a better soundtrack than most of you will ever even imagine” Fox.
I will however say that I prefer Deltarune’s sound design in general to Undertale, though. Don’t get me wrong, Undertale still has the better OST (for now at least), but Deltarune’s sound effects JUST beat it out in my books. In particular, I felt like the text sounds for most of the characters was, on average, less annoying than in Undertale. Again, don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Undertale’s voices, but some of them could get a little ear-grating, especially for characters who talked a LOT throughout the game. Here, with the exception of one returning character (where the irritation was kind of the joke anyways), all of them work really well. There’s even a tiny bit of voice acting from a couple of the more important characters! So, big thumbs up there.
More pressingly, however, are the visuals. In case it wasn’t obvious from the above screenshots (aside from that second one of Lancer, maybe), the graphics have gotten a MAJOR glow up since the last game. Temmie Chang, aka “Most Precious Meme”, is still the main Artist for the game, and Undertale is by no means a bad looking game. However, in general, the games’ art went from “Beautiful and sometimes even breathtaking” to consistently “HOLY SHIT MY EYES ARE NOT EQUIPPED TO COPE WITH SUCH SHEER BRILLIANCE!!!”
You think I’m exaggerating, but I legit dropped my jaw at a lot of this game’s visuals. I mean, just look at this one End-game animation!
Tumblr media
I think this one short scene has more detail and frame than Asgore’s overworld sprite got in the entirety of Undertale.
On the slight downside, however, we no longer get the full-body monochromatic battle sprites from Undertale, as enemies appear in battle almost identically to how they appear in the world. Still, with this much more detail in overworld sprites, it’s not even a slight loss.
Speaking of battle...
Part 3: Gameplay
Tumblr media
Yep, the gameplay has gotten a major overhaul over the past three years. First, as the screenshot should make obvious, you have a team now! Yep, in addition to Kris, you can get up to three additional party members over the course of your adventure, including Susie!
In general, what you can do in battles with Kris is mostly the same; you can Fight by hitting the button at the right time, Act in certain ways to make the enemies not want to fight you, use an Item really quick, or Spare an enemy who you don’t want to kill. You also have the option to defend, which will lessen the damage you take if you get hit during the obligatory bullet-hell attacks your enemies dish out.
Where things get really interesting, though, is the team mechanics. You see, every character is different, and everyone but Kris can use magic (although some of Kris’s ACT commands kinda seem like magic?). However, only Kris can directly ACT, with other party members only being able to preform certain set spells. So, instead, Kris can command the other party members to perform actions, or Kris can ACT while the others defend, use items, or attack. If you use a Team ACT, the other party member(s) involved won’t be able to do anything else that turn, but said Team ACTs are usually more powerful or potent as a result. The whole thing can set up for actually strategic choices in battle: In Undertale, since most enemies only had one or two ways to spare them, the most strategy you could use on a Pacifist play through was “Which enemy should I deal with first?” Here, you have to figure how you’re going to handle each encounter. Do you have Kris ACT first, then have another party member spare that monster in the same turn? Or do you act WITH that party member, and next turn be able to spare at least two monsters?
In addition to the battle system being reworked, there were a number of smaller, quality of life changes:
You now have three item categories: Items (your standard consumables), Gear (your armor and weapons), and Key Items (your cellphone and a couple other important things).
You can sell at pretty much every shop in the “Dark” world, which makes sense, since you’re mostly selling food, armor, and weapons-things people in this world would need to survive.
Each character in your party uses a different kind of weapon, but all of them use the same armor, and you can give them all two pieces of armor each, so you can stack defense and get extra boosts!
Choices are mostly presented in a cross pattern, so you just have to pick a direction and confirm to choose that option.
THERE IS NOW A RUN BUTTON AND IN THE OPTIONS YOU CAN CHANGE SO YOU AUTO-RUN AND THE RUN BUTTON IS JUST A WALK BUTTON!
And speaking of which, YOU CAN ACCESS THE MENU FROM WITHIN THE MAIN GAME! THANK YOU!
You can also have up to three save files at once, although I’ve heard each file has some minor differences in flavor-text across the game, so be on the look-out for that.
Overall, I feel like I honestly prefer the game play to Undertale. In fact, with the exception of the story (which is mostly underdeveloped because, again, this is basically just a very long demo), I honestly prefer most of Deltarune to Undertale. While it isn’t technically a sequel, per se, it does do what any good sequel should do: use the original as a starting point and just improve almost everything. It’s almost like the Bioshock Infinite to Undertale’s Bioshock, if that makes sense.
(Would that make System Shock 2 Homestuck? Am I over thinking this?)
Now, with the actual review out of the way, we can get to the main event.
Part 4: Co̞͞n̤̠͎̙̥̗n̸̰̜̳͚͓͇͍e̸͈͉̳̺c̭̮̬̖̭̗̳͠t͍͓͘i̖̺͙͇̟̫o̢̰̜̦n͈̮̼͈͎͖̦s͈͝ ̹̙̦͈̯̜A̡̟̥ņ̥͙̗d̛͙̤̦͈̹̪͚ ̺T͍̞h̡̜̝̟̬e͏̱̹̲ͅ ͕̯̰͍̜͇͍D͝oc̜t̸̺̱̯͙̠o̷̱r͈̟̣̤̯
Tumblr media
As I mentioned before, this game isn’t technically a sequel to Undertale. None of the events of Undertale seem to have occurred in this universe, including (seemingly) things from before the game even began. This becomes especially apparent after you leave the “Dark” world and can explore town, talking to various people. Character relationships are almost universally reset, there is no mention of the “Underground”, and considering Asriel is still alive and in college, it’s safe to say there is no Flowey in this world. It could almost be passed off as a complete alternate continuity, or even a reboot, if it weren’t for a few...
Tumblr media
oddities.
Yep, among the returning characters, Sans makes an appearance, having apparently just moved into town and never having met you before. Despite having apparently met Toriel the night before in the grocery store, and having a business relationship with your teacher, Alphys. Plus, there's the fact that what used to be Grillby’s and the Bone Brother’s house both look WAY too close to there original versions (no other building looks that similar), the fact that of ALL the returning characters, only Sans looks the exact same (no redesign, visible aging, or even new clothing), and the fact that some of Kris’s dialogue choices seem to reference things that haven’t happened in this universe, and other characters notice them acting...different.
Plus, you know, there’s Chapter 1′s ending.
Tumblr media
Yeah.
(Plus, as you might have noticed at the top of this part, there’s a monster who is the only one in either game who looks similar to this Gaster Follower)
Tumblr media
All of this seems to point to something much more sinister going on. And, for those who haven’t seen it, the tweets leading up to the demo’s release might just explain why.
Tumblr media
Now, we aren’t quite sure who this is supposed to be, but judging by their vocabulary and how they type, it’s a pretty safe assumption we’re being chatted to by our favorite former royal scientist. And, sure enough, most people are assuming that this entity is at least some version of Dr. W. D. Gaster. Why is he doing this? What does it all mean? Why was the Delta Rune even slightly relevant to the plot of this chapter aside from there being three prophesied heroes?
Well, I suppose only time will tell.
Until then...

------
It's hot as hell out right now. The evening air is humid, a sticky and suffocating mess of sweltering heat, moisture, pollen, and biting insects. And the people? Running around and playing under the setting sun with their kids and pets, some visibly glistening with sweat. It's gross. If Wraith had nothing better to do, she'd be lying under the air conditioning back at her apartment. But here she is out in the eternal Solace summer and misery, sans scarf, in shorts and a tank top ready to start her evening workout routine.
...Or she would have been if she hadn't received the oddest text from Anita. She stares at her phone now, rereading the messages exchanged only an hour ago.
hey
meet me at the park at 6? got someone I want you to meet
Sure?
It's 6:05. She's sitting on the top of a park bench cooking in the heat, and Anita is nowhere to be found. Great. It's a fairly random text as it is, and Wraith doesn't see why Anita needed to meet now. She knows this is Wraith's time to work out.
Who on Solace is this important? Better yet, who is this person at all? A new friend? Couldn't be. Anita's fairly closed-off, doesn't make friends that quickly or easily. Getting comfortable around the other Legends was enough of a chore. Could it be a significant other, girlfriend maybe? Well, she hopes not. The thought tugs her insides. Of course, she'd be happy for Anita, but…
Whatever. It's not that serious. Whoever it is must be important enough for Anita to meet up with Wraith specifically. Wait, was she the only person asked? Anita doesn't normally send group chats, though. But… no one else is here and it's 6:07. Ugh, god, she's thinking too much about this and this weather isn't helping and it's getting harder to breathe with the nervous lump stuck in her throat-
"Hey! Come back here! Sentry!"
Anita?
Wraith turns, eyes widening as a massive black ball barrels towards her at full speed on four legs. She throws her arms up to protect herself as Anita yells again.
"Sentry, sit!"
Nothing knocks into her, and when Wraith lowers her arms, she makes eye contact with a rather large black dog not five feet away from the park bench. It's stopped in its tracks, large ears and tail standing at attention, as its face twists in a confused expression. It bows, butt in the air and tail wagging before lying down in the grass, wet tongue hanging loosely from its mouth.
Anita ambles up to the canine and kneels to clip on the leash that's wrapped around her fist. When she stands, she half-smiles in apology and leans forward with an arm outstretched.
Wraith dismounts the bench to accept the quick hug. The woman smells good, a familiar cologne gracing Wraith's senses. It's better than the heavy stench of outdoor humidity, that's for sure.
"Hey, sorry I'm late. This little knucklehead can't keep still today." Anita unravels the leash twice from her fist, relaxes. She huffs, lifting the hem of her tank top to wipe sweat off her forehead.
"I, uh-" Wraith's eyebrows raise ever-so-slightly at the welcome sight, but she doesn't allow her eyes to linger. "Didn't know you were a dog sitter."
Anita smirks, this time mischievous and lopsided. "That what you think?"
"I suppose. By the way, where is this person I'm supposed to be meeting? Is it a secret girlfriend I don't know about? Gonna pop out from behind a tree somewhere?"
Anita laughs and shakes her head as she kneels next to the dog. "First off, I don't have a girlfriend. Not yet anyway. And secondly, I never said it was a person, Wraith."
"Then- wait. When did you get a dog?"
The animal in question tilts its head at Wraith like it understands and objects to every word she says. Anita pets it, rubs it on the head and coos at it with praise before she responds. It's oddly cute. And very unexpected.
"His name's Sentry. Got him a couple months ago. Didn't wanna spill about it because I wanted some time to get used to him. And I… wanted you to meet him first."
Wraith's belly flutters at the statement. But her out of everyone they know?
She kneels next to Anita and studies the dog. Sentry's much bigger up close than she thought. He's covered in a shiny coat of short fur, solid black all over, and his pointed ears stand at attention, flicking this way and that to take in the sounds of people walking by. His eyes are a nice shade of light brown, intelligent but unfocused on anything in particular. The dog who very nearly knocked her over mere minutes ago lies relaxed in the grass without a care in the world.
"Rescue dog?"
Anita nods half-heartedly. "In a way. Got some people I know back on Gaea. Said some of their dogs failed police training and were up for adoption. This little guy couldn't stay out of trouble."
"Little? Bang, he's huge."
"Yeah, he is," Anita laughs. "First family couldn't handle his size with their kids. Apparently, he grew faster than they could keep up with. Second person couldn't deal with his temperament."
Wraith purses her lips. "Third time's the charm, I'd hope."
"Heh, yeah. It will be. Two months in, and I'm already in love with him. He's almost two. Still actin' like a damn puppy, but, god, I love him," Anita sighs, exhales, and Wraith's heart tugs at the pure emotion emanating from the woman's voice.
Wraith sits on the edge of the bench, crossing her legs. "Didn't quite take you for an animal lover."
"I think that's a stretch," Anita chuckles. "We had dogs growing up when I was a kid. Military household. Strict but fair. But… we all let our guards down for the pups." Anita moves to sit next to Wraith, leans forward to rest her arms on her knees. She stares out into the park, watching crowds of people bask in what's left of the sun. Sentry gets up as well and lies back down in front of her, panting. She loosens the leash again. "We had two of 'em.
"Two big boys. Angelo was a mutt. Probably an Australian Cattle Dog and Great Dane mix from what we could tell, maybe a little Pit in 'im, too. Loyal as hell. Healthy dog. Ghost was a German Shepherd. Same as this boy." She nods towards Sentry. "Pure white. A bit of a troublemaker, if anything, but still good. Me and Ghost… same age. Inseparable." She pauses, laughs a little, wistful. "I had a connection with that dog. Still do on some level. He died old, when we were fourteen. Right before my bro-"
She stops and scrunches her nose, screws her eyes shut for two seconds. "You know what? Nevermind. Not important."
Wraith doesn't know what to say. Anita doesn't make eye contact. Whatever she hesitated mentioning must have been too personal to share. Understandable.
"Anyway. I'm glad I brought him home. He means a lot to me. And I'm… glad you met him, too."
Why her, though? Sure, they're friends, have hung out plenty. They've had rounds at the firing range before matches, developed duos tactics together, gone out for celebratory dinner after wins and whatnot. She's sure Anita's done that with… everyone, right?
She can't imagine she's any more or less of a friend to Anita than any of the other Legends. Anita and Witt talk frequently enough. She and Ajay also hang out sometimes. Hell, she's even gotten drinks with Octavio when he can sit down for long enough. Why Wraith?
When Wraith shifts in her seat, Sentry focuses on her, rising to walk towards her. His tail wags behind him as he drags his wet, leathery nose across her arms and over her thighs. He shakes, tail flailing even harder. She can't help but crack a small smile and hover a hand over his head, which he sniffs enthusiastically.
"You can pet him if you want. Promise he won't bite," Anita says.
Wraith nods and lowers her hand to Sentry's head. She rubs him, scratches him on the forehead and behind the ears with short nails. His tail calms, and he shuts his eyes as he sits back on his haunches.
"You're a good boy, aren't you?"
He nods, tongue lolling as if agreeing as she rubs both ears with her hands.
Wraith smiles and turns to Anita. "Not to brag, but I think he might actually like me."
"Heh. Guess that makes two of us."
Wraith raises an eyebrow. She stops petting Sentry, and he whines, nudging her arm. The comment is slick and unexpected, typical Anita, but…
"I-"
"You, uh- you busy tomorrow? Thought maybe we could grab coffee or lunch or something."
That's why.
Wraith chuckles and smiles as her cheeks burn at the Voices from the Void. She gives Sentry a few thorough rubs on his cheeks. "I… actually am-"
Anita wipes a stray bead of sweat from her temple. "Oh. Well don't worry about it. Maybe some other-"
"-But. Let me… clear my schedule. I don't think it'll be a huge deal to move some meetings around tomorrow. Maybe you can bring Sentry along."
Anita finally turns to gaze at her. There's a subtle smirk gracing her features, that usual Bangalore bravado emanating from her. It's attractive, no lie.
"All right, I got you. I got a couple places in mind."
"Looking forward to it."
Anita rubs the back of her head with her leash hand as she lets out a short laugh and stands. "Well, I won't keep you. I gotta give this boy a walk so we can get out of this heat."
Sentry whines then barks once. Loud boy.
Wraith rubs him for the last time before she stands too. "Yeah, I better get to my workout. See you tomorrow?"
Anita opens up for another hug, which Wraith gladly accepts. "Yeah. I'll text you later."
This hug's tighter than the last, sets Wraith on edge a bit, but she doesn't want to pull away. Anita's bare, muscular arm feels good wrapped around her shoulders, her body warm in a way that stamps out the suffocating humidity. She can get used to this.
When the woman pulls away, she salutes Wraith and tugs on Sentry's leash to lead him away.
...Okay, so maybe Wraith's a little excited about tomorrow. And maybe she's been looking at Anita a bit… differently lately. It's nothing bad, right? The woman's tall and attractive and her personality is the type to simultaneously make Wraith roll her eyes and draw her in. She's charming, alluring, knowledgeable, helpful, and ten thousand other words Wraith can substitute. It'd be foolish to not give this a chance, wouldn't it?
She bites her lip, clutching her phone in her hand as she watches Anita fade into the distance. She needs to go workout and focus, but that'll be hard waiting in anticipation of tomorrow's lunch date. She doesn't think she'll sleep well tonight, if at all actually, but she'll certainly try, Solace heat be damned.

Soft-Shoe Shuffle - Ch 10
Tumblr media
Chapter: 10/12 Additional Notes: See Ch 1 for more information. Read on AO3 under "WizardGlick." Any formatting/italics errors are holdovers from AO3 that I was too lazy to fix. Chapter Content Warnings: N/A; ask to tag Excerpt: "I'm the scary one," Remus muttered in Janus' ear. "Not you. So don't ever scare me like that again, okay?" Janus considered the humor-to-consequences ratio of falling limp in Remus' arms and decided it wouldn't be worth it. "I won't."
If it all falls down, falls down, falls down
I can warm a crowd, I can make them shout
I can juggle verbs, adverbs, and nouns
I can make them dance 'til they all fall down
Janus woke up exhausted, which really wasn't fair considering the amount that he'd been sleeping lately.
Someone was stroking his hair, which was nice. Probably Remus. Remus wouldn't care that Janus' hair was stiff with dried sweat and that he hadn't brushed his teeth in who even knew how many days.
He shifted and nuzzled Remus' thigh.
Realization dawned slowly. Remus' nails were longer than this, Remus didn't smell like this, Remus had never sat still like this.
Janus couldn't even bring himself to be embarrassed at the mix-up. He was too tired and sore to really care who was petting his hair like this.
Except that it was probably Patton.
Subconsciously, Janus pulled the teddy bear closer to his chest. It had to be subconscious, because he would never cuddle a stuffed toy on purpose.
Janus opened his eyes.
Patton withdrew his hand like he'd been burned. "I'm sorry," he said, cheeks coloring. "Did I wake you up?"
Janus shook his head. His skin still tingled where Patton had touched him and he wanted it back so badly , but he didn't know how to ask.
"Remus made me promise I'd go get him next time you woke up. Well. Logan made me promise. Remus threatened me. Anyway!" Patton was already halfway to the door.
He was gone before Janus found his voice. "Don't go," Janus whispered to the air.
A moment later, Remus came barreling in with Logan in hot pursuit. Then came Virgil, then Patton again, and finally Roman.
Logan lunged forward to try to catch the back of Remus' shirt, but he was just a split second too late. Janus braced for impact, but Remus only fell on his knees by the bedside and pulled Janus into a tight hug.
"Awww," Patton cooed from the doorway.
"I'm the scary one," Remus muttered in Janus' ear. "Not you. So don't ever scare me like that again, okay?"
Janus considered the humor-to-consequences ratio of falling limp in Remus' arms and decided it wouldn't be worth it. "I won't."
Remus pulled back and made a lewd hand gesture. "Scout's honor?"
Janus manipulated Remus' fingers into the correct position and held his own hand up as well. "Scout's honor."
Remus nodded in apparent satisfaction, so Janus grabbed his shoulder and used it to haul himself upright. Virgil and Patton fidgeted by his desk while Roman leaned against the doorway and Logan hovered behind Remus.
"Well," Janus said, trying to sound better than he felt. "As you can see, I've died. Virgil will handle my estate, so please direct your concerns to him."
"Like I want all your pretentious steampunk crap," Virgil mumbled, looking around at the leather and brass and hardwood.
"It's art deco," Janus and Logan said at the same time, albeit with very different intonation.
Janus squinted at Logan, who seemed to take this as his cue to speak. "You need to eat something."
"Like a dick!" Remus crowed.
Janus sighed, expecting an uproar, but nothing more dramatic than general collective eye-rolling and awkward throat-clearing occurred in response.
Logan carried on, "Something light like chicken broth or dry toast." He cocked an eyebrow, indicating that this was a question.
"Goodness, however shall I choose," Janus said, trying and failing to keep the venom out of his voice. He did better on stage than he did under a microscope, yet here everyone was, studying him. It was all he could do not to squirm.
Patton's voice echoed in his ears suddenly:
He never asks for anything, he just talks around it until you figure it out on your own.
"Could you…" Janus balled both hands into fists. "I want…" He squeezed his eyes shut and expelled a breath through his nose."I just love that you're all in here staring at me. It's not awkward at all. " He fixed his gaze on the ceiling, only just managing to hold back a frustrated curse. Another failure. Another reason for the others to go back to hating him.
"Oh, gosh!" Patton said, but he didn't sound hurt or angry. "We're sorry; it's probably overwhelming to have us all in here at once, huh?"
Janus nodded, not trusting himself to speak. The feeling had grown uncomfortably familiar as of late.
"We'll let Logan look you over," Patton said. He shuffled out of the room after Roman, waving for Virgil to follow him.
Remus winked and wiggled his tongue at Janus. "Have fun playing doctor." He bounded out and shut the door behind him.
"So," Janus said, fidgeting with one of the teddy bear's ears. "He and Roman can stand to be in the same room as each other now?"
"It helps that they were both quite worried about you," Logan said. A pause. "As was I." He preoccupied himself clearing off a space on Janus' nightstand, willing a plate of dry toast into existence, then methodically taking the cap off a bottle of Gatorade and inserting a white bendy straw.
"Plastic straws are killing the sea turtles, you know," Janus said.
Logan looked at him, puzzled. "Rest assured, this one will not and indeed, cannot find its way into the water supply." A moment later he said, "Oh. You were making a joke."
"It's polite to laugh."
"Please excuse my rudeness, then."
Janus smiled. "I think Remus likes you," he said to cut the tension.
Logan tilted his head at the nightstand. "Why?"
Janus took the hint and began pulling the crust off a piece of toast. "I just have a feeling."
"Hm." Logan thinned his lips, but did not press the issue.
"Logan?"
"Yes?"
"What happened? When I was…"
"Incapacitated?"
"Sure."
Logan pushed up his glasses. "You were in a state of delirium for approximately five days. What is the last thing you remember?"
"Clearly? I had a conversation with Patton about… certain choices I had made in regards to Roman." Logan raised an eyebrow but did not interrupt. "It gets hazy after that. You and Patton were in my room, I think. And… I'm not totally sure this happened, but I seem to recall trying to apologize to Roman."
Logan nodded. "You did. Then you fainted in his room, and the ensuing chaos actually led to the temporary resolution of several interpersonal conflicts we had been experiencing."
"Just according to plan," Janus said, steepling his fingers. Logan didn't laugh. "Another joke."
"Please eat your toast."
"Alright, alright." Janus finished picking the crust off one slice and took a hesitant bite.
"Good." Logan nodded in approval. "To further answer your question, Remus has enacted a truce with Patton, Roman, and Virgil. Which essentially means that he agreed to 'tone down' his more distracting behaviors and the others would refrain from, ah…" Logan checked his note cards. "'Getting their strawberry-flavored edible panties in a twist'."
Janus nearly choked on his toast and made a hasty grab for the Gatorade. "How sweet."
"Yes, the sugar content of Blue Cherry Gatorade is regrettably rather high-- Oh. Yes, I suppose it was rather nice of everyone. Virgil also ceased his self-isolation for the sake of seeing you and talked a little about his feelings, as did Roman."
"Hmph." Janus shoved the rest of the toast in his mouth so he wouldn't have to talk. It had been his goal to fix everything, but not quite like this. Not at all like this, actually. He had become another piece on the chessboard, and not even a powerful piece like the queen. No, he was more like a bishop, moving laterally to move forward. And now he had no idea how to get what he wanted.
"Interestingly," Logan said. "I believe it was your involuntary display of vulnerability that led the others to treat each other more gently.
"I get it, I'm the hero," Janus said sourly. Hooray, he'd solved Patton's problems by running around like an idiot. How impressive.
"I was… I was trying to make you feel better."
Janus smiled despite himself. "Thank you. Really."
"Something is bothering you," Logan said. "I can't tell what it is. I had thought you might feel embarrassed, but you are handling matters very calmly, despite the fact that you have a tendency to raise your voice and lash out when agitated or threatened. This leads me to believe you are experiencing a different negative emotion, but I cannot identify what it is or why." Logan paused and cleared his throat, his eyes downcast. "This bothers me because you are my friend."
"I couldn't possibly be tired," Janus snapped, realizing a split second later he'd inadvertently proven Logan's point. "Oh."
Janus sighed and flicked over his metaphorical king, albeit in his own way. "I'm not thinking about all the ways a relationship with Patton could go horribly wrong."
"But you have a relationship with Patton--" Logan's eyes widened. "I see. Are you concerned that your feelings are unrequited?"
"Well, that and the opposite."
"I don't follow."
"Virgil told me that if I break Patton's heart, he'll break me . Literally."
"You're afraid of Virgil ?"
Janus ran his fingers over his temple and took in a breath while he waited for Logan to put the pieces together.
"You're afraid you'll hurt Patton."
"I'm not exactly known for my communication skills."
"Have you tried speaking sincerely instead of hiding your intentions with sarcasm?"
"No , the thought has never crossed my mind."
Logan smiled. "It was a joke."
Janus didn't hiss at him.
Logan continued, "I do think you should try to be honest with Patton."
"Easier said than done."
"But it can be done."
"I'll...think about it." Janus waved a hand to dismiss the topic.

Hello! I'm anon who ask headcanons about Rakuzan boys. Thank you very much! It was great. I was really happy to read it. I like this headcanons and your blog. I like Rakyzan boys too. May I request headcanons (or scenario) about their manager proving to be specialist in getting data and analysis as Momoi? And the reaction to this by Rakuzan, GoM, Kuroko and Momoi (you can tell about their reaction in scenario or remove someone if you want). Thank you very much! This made my day.
thank you for the request! ahhh you’re making me cry (ノД`) super happy to know that you like my writing! hope you like this one too♡ hm, this ends up more as the gom spending time together scenario…
No one knew about your analytical abilities because you never really told anyone about it, and the team never asked you to provide an analysis for them in the first place. So once they knew, they were really shocked.
You watched as Akashi trained the Rakuzan team who were all out of their breaths by now. The emperor was merciless, giving them drills and demanding for their progress.
What was the reason? Well, Seirin came by yesterday for a practice match and the match ended with a draw. But when was a draw ever good enough for Akashi?
After sending the team a murderous glare, Akashi finally allowed them to have a short break. Everyone trudged towards you wearing an expression like a puppy that had just been kicked.
“[Name]-chan, if I die, don’t forget me, okay?!” Hayama was about to glomp you before Nebuya stopped him by grabbing his jersey.
“I’m pretty sure she doesn’t want to be near your smelly self.”
“Ei-chan! You’re mean!”
You giggled at their antics, watching as they gulp down their respective beverages. Not long afterwards, Akashi walked to the rest of you, his face still tense.
You then reached for a file in your bag before giving it to him. “Umm, I made these notes yesterday during the game with Seirin. I hope they can be of help..”
Akashi looked surprised. He took the file from you and opened it in interest.
“Eehh?” Mibuchi moved closer to Akashi to read it too with Hayama closely behind him.
“Wo~ah! These are so detailed!” Hayama took one look and immediately exclaimed, his eyes sparkling.
“Wow, you even drew formation suggestions and weird diagrams.” Nebuya stood behind Akashi to view it with his team.
“This is…” Akashi looked at you with wide eyes, “really helpful.”
“Ah?” You blinked and tilted your head to the side, “Really? I’m glad, then!” You smiled enthusiastically, giving him another file, “I’ve been making these observations from your past games as well.” You held up a finger when Akashi opened his mouth to talk, “..and this one, from today’s practice. I don’t think drilling everyone with the same exercise is effective, Seijūrō-kun. Based on my observations, I think individual training suited to everyone’s special skills will bring out their abilities more.”
Everyone’s jaw dropped. “[Name]-chan! You’re a genius!” Mibuchi’s gasp made you blush, not expecting that compliment.
“Ah, that’s..”
“He’s right. This is very detailed and well thought-out.” Akashi agreed, examining your notes. “Thank you, [Name]. You’re quite analytical.”
You only smiled, happy to be able to help your friends.
With your notes, the team was able to quickly improve their playing. Akashi couldn’t resist telling his friends about your hidden skill and boasting to them about you. Soon, the Generation of Miracles got interested and wanted to see the results for themselves.
“Ah, your team really did improve.” Aomine had to admit half-heartedly when Nebuya made a dunk, ending the game with a 35-21.
Akashi smiled, enjoying the compliment. He turned his head to the rest of the GoM who were watching from the sidelines, all having a serious expression on their faces. “You believe me now, yes?”
“Waah, [Name]-chan, you’re amazing! These notes are so detailed!” While the boys were playing, you and Momoi were busy chatting.
“Ah.. not compared to yours, Satsuki-chan.” You rubbed the back of your neck sheepishly, “But thanks.”
“Heey, [Name]-cchi, make notes for my team too, will you?” You heard Kise call out to you.
“I would like that too.” Midorima pushed his glasses up, looking at you seriously.
“If it’s no problem, my team could really benefit from your notes as well, [Name]-chan.” Kuroko piped up.
“Mine too. I’ll even give [Name]-chin the newest Mauibo flavor as a payment. Fair trade?” You didn’t even realise that Murasakibara was already behind you and Momoi and gasped.
Akashi glared at all of them. “Keep dreaming. [Name] is a precious asset of Rakuzan. Her skills are for me only.” When he noticed the GoM’s amused stares, he quickly added, “Me and my team.”
Happy that everyone is benefitting from your notes, you often made notes for GoM’s teams (while keeping it a secret from Akashi, of course).
“Thank you for your notes, they were really helpful.” Midorima had been visiting Rakuzan on a monthly basis for three months now to give you small presents in exchange for the notes you’d given him (even though you told him that he didn’t have to do that).
“You’re welcome! Thank you for the lucky pen. I scored really high on my last test.” You giggled when he proudly nodded.
“Ah, so I was correct after all.” The two of you jumped when Akashi appeared from out of nowhere, “You have been doing business with an enemy team.”
“Ah, you don’t have to put it like that…”
“You’re defying me, Shintarō. I do not like that.”
Midorima merely shrugged. “Unfortunately, so is everyone else.”
Because of the time you spent together with the other GoM, all of you got closer. They often gave you things and bought you meals to thank you for your notes.
“Huuh? What are you all doing here?”
“Ah, Daiki-kun!” You looked up from the menu to see Aomine walking his way to you with the rest of Toō behind him. “Tetsuya-kun and Kagami-kun is treating me. I asked Satsuki-chan to accompany me as well. Getting free food… ah, it’s the start of a good summer break.”
To thank you, Kuroko had offered to treat you for lunch and said that Kagami would tag along. So you decided to ask Momoi to join you (to which she very eagerly accepted). You were quite surprised to see someone you knew, but also happy. After all, the more, the merrier.
“You’re still doing business with enemy teams I see.” Akashi appeared from behind an equally surprised Imayoshi. “How many times do I have to tell you to stop?”
“Waah, since when was he there?” Wakamatsu whispered, sweatdropping.
“Seijūrō-kun, what on earth are you doing here?” You couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. “Do you want to join us?”
“Eh? Does he have to?” Kagami was a bit creeped out by the Rakuzan captain. “And do we have to pay for his food as well?”
“That won’t be necessary.” Akashi answered, ignoring Kagami’s obvious discomfort. He sat down next to you while Aomine and his team sat at the table next to yours.
“Hmm, should I call the rest of the guys?” Momoi thought aloud, “I heard the Shūtoku boys are nearby!”
“Ah, and Ryōta-kun is modeling in a studio near this place.” You added, nodding.
“That sounds nice.” Kuroko smiled, sipping his milkshake contentedly. “But I only have the money to pay for our meals.”
Aomine and Kagami glanced at Akashi, both thinking the same thing.
“Yes, consider it my treat.” He sighed. “But don’t ask for more notes from [Name], understand?”
Everyone laughed when the two guys looked the other way, grinning.

Hi Julia, I'm a second year grad student and I'm trying to juggle quals(write and orally defend an F31 application) and finishing up paper revisions for the next month. How do I schedule time for reading papers, writing my exam, and finishing experiments for the paper (not to mention self care, bf time, friend time, exercise, chores....) Thanks, as always you are such a great resource/help/human!
Hi Anon!
Oh man I’ve definitely been there done that. My quals was the same format. And it was a difficult time! Juggling all those things and still doing them well (like, we gotta pass our quals) was not a walk in the park! This is what I did and still do to balance my million tasks (including time for self-care, chores, and relationships). I hope some of it will work for you too, or give you an idea for something to try that will work for you.
The short answer to everything: Schedule everything you need to do. Schedule it in advance, and down to the hour.
The long answers:
Writing (F31, paper revisions, etc):
First, break it down into doable tasks. Pretend you’re a professor teaching a class on writing an F31–what should the lectures/homework assignments be? For example, the F31 can be broken down into: Specific Aims page; Preliminary Data; Research Approach for Aim 1, 2, and 3; Biosketch, etc. Your manuscript can be broken down into Introduction, Methods, Results (which can be further broken down to each Figure), Discussion, Abstract, etc.
Then, plan out on a calendar (physical or electronic; I prefer Google Calendars) your due dates for those tasks. You may need to work backwards from the due date for the final thing (ie when your committee members need a copy of your F31 to read before your quals date, or when you want to submit your papers). For example, maybe next Friday you’d like to have a draft of your Specific Aims page done.
Don’t forget that editing counts as tasks! So if the first draft of Specific Aims page is due next Friday, and then you may decide to finish round 1 editing it on Monday.
Schedule in a weekly (or daily) time to write and treat it like a doctor’s appointment or class. This is probably the most important thing to do. Studies have shown that writing regularly, rather than writing when the “motivation” hits, yields more finished pieces. And doing things that are related to writing, such as literature searches and editing, still count as writing!
Have a writing buddy so you two can hold each other accountable, and also edit each other’s writings. Preferably this is someone in your cohort who is also working on their F31. Make your due dates the same so you can both edit each other’s work, and also schedule regular meet-ups to rant about writing :) Venting and bonding over shared experiences does help!
Experiments:
Plan your experiments using the same calendar for your writing tasks (so they don’t overlap). By doing this, you avoid scheduling too much or too little, and also you’ll be less likely to forget small tasks. I like to schedule in my experiment as soon as it’s planned so I don’t forget. Some people prefer to-do lists, but imo, a long to-do list is overwhelming; but a schedule that has all the tasks broken down helps me visualize that yes, I can do it.
Got some down-time during experiments? Use it wisely. I like scrolling through my phone as much as the next person during my 5 min washes, but when it’s crunch-time, I bring my laptop into the lab with me and try to multitask. If I have 5x 5min washes during western blots, that’s almost half-an-hour of glorious time to use!
Ask for help when you need it (including delegating tasks to other people). A lab is a team, and teams can only function if we all help each other when someone needs it. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, it’s encouraged to ask for help. If anything, it’s better for the experiment and thus the science, so it’s in everyone’s best interest to help one another in the lab!
Plan your experiments really really well to save time. Running the right controls, conditions, and combos not only makes the results more robust, but it can save a lot of time, energy, and $$. There’s nothing worse than having to re-run a huge experiment because the correct controls weren’t included. I always like to run my experimental set-up by my PI or lab manager to make sure it’s sound.
Reading:
Schedule in your reading time too and have a summary sheet. And to help you not have to re-read the same paper over and over because you forgot the details–have a summary sheet attached to the paper with all the important goodies. Or in my case, I just write all those things down in the margins of the first page.
Save all your readings in an electronic works cited program for easy access if you need to cite it later for your papers or F31. I use and love Mendeley (which also gives you the option to take notes on the paper, add tags, etc). It even has a browser plug-in so you can save a paper you find online directly, as well as a Word Doc module-thingy so you can automatically make a works cited page (and do in-text citations). I highly recommend it if you haven’t used it already. EndNote does the same stuff but costs $$$.
Read smart, not hard. If it’s a paper on something you’re already familiar with, skip the Intro and Methods and text of Results and just look at the Figures and Figure Legends. That’s all the info you need right there!
Self-care, chores, and relationships:
Schedule it in your calendar! If you’re wondering if I literally schedule everything in my life, the answer is yep. I schedule in when I’m gonna go grocery shopping, laundry, cleaning, hanging out with friends, etc. That way I know I have time to do it, and I also actually do it. If you’re having trouble maintaining a self-care routine, I would schedule that in too! It also takes away the feeling of “guilt” of taking time for yourself when you know you’ve planned well for it.
When I was at my busiest, I also scheduled a once a week “date-night” with my now-husband-then-boyfriend. It was every Wednesday evening that was just for us–no work, no chores, etc. I have another point of advice for maintaining a good relationship with your significant during something as busy and stressful as grad school.

Yepppp google calendar is my lifeline. I just need that, my heart, and my liver, and I’m good.
I hope that helps! Good luck on your F31 and your quals!!!
