Scotch Rolex - Nfulula Biswa (ft. Swordman Kitala)   from: Scotch Rolex - Tewari (Hakuna Kulala, 2021)
"Scotch Rolex & Co." is a love letter to Hakuna Kulala from one of experimental dance music's true originals, it's a joyful rumination on the fluidity and versatility of electronic music that manages eclecticism without ever sacrificing coherence.

Etiquette Stomp by Villaelvin (from Headroof, 2020)
In April 2019 improvising lyricist, producer and sound artist Elvin Brandhi moved into the 'Villa' in Kampala Uganda working on a collaborative album with several artists from the Nyege Nyege collective. Auto-tune blast beats from field recordings of Evangelist churches, the swamps surrounding the studios, with warped drums by Kampala based percussionist Omutaba, improvised stream of consciousness lyrics from local rappers Hakim and Swordman Kitala, with glitched out bassy productions with Boutiq Studio manager Don Zilla and Congolese producer Oise. This new project called Villaelvin is the first full LP to be released on Hakuna Kulala.

Villaelvin — Headroof (Hakuna Kulala)
Tumblr media
Headroof by Villaelvin
Hakuna Kulala, a sub-label of the Ugandan Nyege Nyege Tapes, is a landing spot for less polished or beat-oriented outfits and projects, however ingenious they may be. Two EPs were released on vinyl in 2019 from Slikback, the Kenyan producer whose sound is akin to the blitzing headrush of the parent label but exceled when its movement wasn’t tethered to fast-paced, turbulent singeli beats. Villaelvin’s Headroom, the first full album on the sub-label, excels under those same conditions, but it lends itself to more abstract territory than even Slikback’s productions, leaning into its thick textures and sculpted sound sources.
In April of 2019, Welsh producer and sound artist Elvin Brandhi traveled to Kampala to work with Nyege Nyege collective. Producing the tracks on Headroom, they pulled sound sources from Evangelist churches, swamps, wetlands and other natural sounds of the Kampala region, and local percussionist, Omutaba, blurring each source’s signifying properties and retooling them into imbued melodic and rhythmic components. These retooled parts at times are the focus of the tracks, but they also fill out and graft to auto-toned beats, taking on a secondary role too. Local rappers Hakim and Swordman Kitala provide some ad-libbed lyrics, their rapping positioned right in the thicket of all the moving parts; mostly, it sounds as if their verses are left untouched, but more often than not, they get the same distillation treatment as the other sounds.
Headroof’s combined elements offer a rambling set with scattered melodic and rhythmic trajectories.  It’s most compelling when the abstracted sounds lead, and its weakness lies where those sounds take a backseat to the other components. The clearest contrast of these two scenarios opens the LP. “TROOF,” completely without a beat, wedges a recording of a female singer from an Evangelist church in a pocket of ambience that allows that sampled singer to cut and glide ahead. The following “GHOTT ZILLAH” creates an expansive stratum of affected samples but it’s molded around choppy beats, constricting those sounds to move around or take off. The beats, although articulate, nimble and expertly crafted, feel like that odd component out of an oil and water type separation. The nine-minute “Kaloli,” with the prominent percussion of the aforementioned ensemble, Omutaba, has moments of non-harmony too. Maybe the most fascinating track in this respect, it contributes to the case that the beats are best when their actions are streamlined and complementing the sample-inflected stratum.
Nonetheless, Headroof is swarming with embedded stimuli, and it rewards repeated listens. A series of slow-moving, compounding sounds, it’s continually moving and wildly inventive. The critique that the beats and samples don’t quite fit with each other may feel harsh, but every component on this LP is fascinating in its own right. The production input on multiple levels is felt and reverberates throughout each track.

Part 2 of a series interrogating the track titles for Kaijupop, the debut album of my Soft-Bodied Humans project.
The album is available on LP and digital from @gangofducks at https://gangofducks.bandcamp.com/album/kaijupop
Track 2: Core-Braver
--
Core-Braver (コアブレイバー Koa Bureibā) is a heroic mecha created by Toho that first appeared in episode 2 of Super Fleet Sazer-X, titled "Burn Up! Great-Lio."
Core-Braver is a sleek white and silver humanoid machine with bright yellow eyes and a powerful red laser in his chest.
--
On Kaijupop, Core-Braver features a stand-out performance from the great Swordman Kitala, who rides an off-kilter beat made out repurposed kaiju roars with supreme confidence and skill.
Musically it's difficult to describe - the beat belonged to a subset of tracks I was working on that I dubbed 'wonky pop', which also includes Foksaurus feat. MCpero from the Kaijugrime EP.
These tracks often had chirpy, major-key melodies that bounced playfully on top of abrasive roars, screeches and ear-shattering industrial beats.
I think it just sounds and feels good.

Kaiju Kitala by Soft-Bodied Humans x Swordman Kitala
Soft-Bodied Humans x Swordman Kitala - Kaiju Kitala
New Swordman Kitala!! The first single just dropped from his new collab with Soft-Bodied Humans and it hits the spot. Tight, grimey beats give Kitala a perfect platform to spit his Ugandan hype over. There’s also random Japanese monster movie samples, naturally. Banging. -Kris
