Semifinals
Out of the 32 original teams, only four teams are left, split into two semifinals: Spain v. Sweden, and Australia v. England. This is the culmination of three weeks of joy, passion, and heartbreak…and some really good soccer. These teams have all found their grooves, their momentum, and there is so much on the line now that everyone will be giving it their all. At this point, I don’t know what else I can say about these teams, but I went back through each team’s journey so far to look at the results so far in the tournament.
Spain, FIFA ranked 7
Won 3-0 over Costa Rica
Won 5-0 over Zambia
Lost 4-0 to Japan
Won 5-1 over Switzerland
Won 2-1 over Netherlands
Sweden, FIFA ranked 3
Won 2-1 over South Africa
Won 5-0 over Italy
Won 2-0 over Argentina
Won in penalties over USA
Won 2-1 over Japan
Australia, FIFA ranked 10
Won 1-0 over Republic of Ireland
Lost 3-2 to Nigeria
Won 4-0 over Australia
Won 2-0 over Denmark
Won in penalties over France
England, FIFA ranked 4
Won 1-0 over Haiti
Won 1-0 over Denmark
Won 6-1 over China
Won in penalties over Nigeria
Won 2-1 over Colombia
I think that both games could go either way, and it would be arrogant and stupid on my part to try and predict anything from here on out. It is a guarantee that we will have a brand-new champion; none of these teams have won a world cup before. England and Sweden have gotten to the semifinals and won medals before, but Spain and Australia are at this point for the first time in program history.
One thing that most people won’t know is that the players on these teams have all played together on club teams, becoming friends, and even dating. England’s Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh play in Barcelona with nine of Spain’s players, and Sweden’s Fridolina Rolfo. Australia’s Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord play for Arsenal with England’s Lotte Wubben-Moy, while Australia’s Sam Kerr plays for Chelsea with four players from England, and three players from Sweden. No matter which teams go through, players will witness their friends and colleagues triumphs and losses–a bittersweet end to a world cup that has been full of rich, new, powerful experiences.

2022: The Year of Records
Just some of the records broken in women’s football so far this year:
UWCL
PSG v. OL broke the attendance record (43,255) for a women's club match in France.
Barcelona v. Real Madrid set the attendance record (91,553) for a UWCL quarter-final.
Barcelona v. Wolfsburg set the attendance record (91,648) for a UWCL semi-final, while also breaking the ("official") world record to become the highest attended women's football match ever.
Wolfsburg broke their home attendance record against Barcelona in the semi-finals with 22,057 people in attendance.
The UWCL final between Barcelona and Lyon saw a record-setting live cumulative viewership of 3.6m globally.
Sonia Bompastor became the first person to win the UWCL as a player and as a coach.
EUROS
England v. Austria had an attendance of 68,871 making it the highest attended opening match in women's Euro history.
England recorded the biggest win in Euro history against Norway (8-0).
England broke the record of most goals scored in a first half (6 goals against Norway).
England broke the record of most goals scored in the group stage (14 goals).
Beth Mead broke the record of most goals in a group stage by a single player (5 goals).
England equaled Germany's record of fewest goals conceded in the group stage (0 goals).
England equaled Germany's record of most different players scoring in a single game in their game against Norway (5 goals scored by 5 different players).
England v. Sweden recorded the all-time biggest crowd (28,624) at a Euro semi-final.
Germany v. France recorded the all-time biggest crowd (27,445) at a Euro semi-final not involving the hosts.
Alex Popp's goals v. France were Germany's 100th and 101st goals at the Euros, the 1st side to net 100 goals in the competition.
Alex Popp became the first player to score in 5 matches in a row.
Beth Mead and Alex Popp equaled the record set by Inka Grings for most goals scored at a single Euro tournament (6 goals).
England broke the record of most goals in a Euros tournament (22 goals).
England won its first European championship (men and women).
England v. Germany set the attendance record for a European championship (men and women) with 87,192 supporters.
England's victory over Germany got a peak TV audience of 17.4m on BBC making it the highest UK audience for a women's football match.
An average of nearly 18m people watched the Euros final on TV in Germany, a record for a women's football game in Germany.
Beth Mead became the only English player to win the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament at a senior Euros or World Cup.
Sarina Wiegman became the first coach to win with 2 different nations in the Euros.
Sarina Wiegman became the first coach in history to start all games with the same starting xi.
The total attendance at the Euros was 574,875 which makes it the most attended women’s Euro tournament in history.
AFCON
The semi-final Nigeria v. Morocco delivered a record-breaking attendance of 45,562.
The final Morocco v. South Africa broke the record for most attended WAFCON match with around 50,000 fans.
South Africa won their first AFCON title with their win over Morocco.
NWSL
Angel City played in front of a sold-out crowd of 22,000 for its first regular season match, setting a record for highest attendance for an expansion team.
The NWSL's 10th season kicked off with a record 10,000 fans per game, beating the previous mark from 2016.
Sue Bird and Eli Manning join Gotham FC ownership at record $40m valuation.
In the Portland Thorns v. Gotham FC game on July 17th, Portland led 3-0 at the 10:13 mark, the fastest from kickoff a team has scored three goals in NWSL history.
The latest NWSL TV ratings, when the games are put on CBS and not hidden on Paramount+ are impressive, far more so than MLS TV ratings in 2022.
BONUS FACTS
Brazil defeated Colombia to win their record 8th Copa America title.
The three highest attended matches in European football in 2022 have all been for women’s matches.
For the first time, men’s goalkeeping errors exceeded those of women’s in the English league. In the WSL, across the whole of the 2021-22 campaign there were just four goalkeeping errors that led to goals. Compare this data with the men’s Premier League and the numbers show that at 2%, men were twice as likely to concede due to a goalkeeping mistake in the 2021-22 season than women in the WSL at 1%.
The last time England won a major trophy was in 1966 when it was illegal for women to play football. In 2022, the England WNT brought football home by winning the Euros.

OPEN SOURCE INTEL: I’d posted to @iceagefarmer that I’d received many reports of poor germination and other issues from corporate seed sources, and asked people to share what they were seeing.   Over 700 people replied. Here is a summary; huge thanks to Kate B. for reviewing, compiling, and sharing.  It paints an interesting picture of a uniquely difficult season.  Original thread here (https://t.me/iceagefarmer/2936).  (How's your garden doing?) ___ Just been through about 700+ comments from the US, Canada, Europe, UK, Sweden, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and beyond: a) seeds are showing poor germination from a wide range of suppliers b) those that do germinate and start to grow are doing so i) slower than usual  OR ii) are getting so far in their growth then dying (a bit like Tesco's herbs unless you transplant into fresh earth!) OR iii) are growing well but producing greenery not edible produce, so poor yields c) suspicion is also falling on contaminated bagged compost -- many reports of issues here, some discussion around Grazon contamination d) in addition, folks are noticing that store bought veg & fruit is not lasting, plus some is rotten on opening although firm externally e) suggestions also being made about soil alkalinity from chemtrails inhibiting growth f) some people raising animals are getting all male babies [!?] g) sunflowers & other plants are being burnt up by the sun's rays h) there is poor growth/yield from fruit trees j) plentiful complaints from folks that have been growing for 25-40 years that things just aren't right with a degree of confusion as to the source k) livestock feed prices are skyrocketing l) many sick & dead animals around this year & dead birds found daily (Italy) m)  too hot/ too dry/ no rain/ storms/ erratic weather with false forecasting n)  absence of bees for pollination p) cold nights inhibiting growth q) abundance of pests & bugs at levels not seen before r)  zucchini with zero female flowers s) blatant chemtrail spraying with some warning of "cancer in the ground for gardeners", t) healthy hens stopping laying u) pullets dropping dead at 6 months with no obvious cause v) cooler spring so plants are a month behind w) hard to get the cows/goats back in calf x)  change in taste of store bought veg/fruit y) salads are going straight to seed and bolting z) overall poor germination & growth - a weird growing year, Common phrase: "Never seen anything like it in 30 years"

USA Exit, Quarterfinals
I wish I had made separate blog posts about these, but my travel back to the USA was overwhelmingly nuts and jet lag has hit me hard, so just pretend this is two separate posts.
USA Exit
In Round of 16, team USA was heartbreakingly eliminated by Sweden in penalty kicks. Ironically, it was the best game that the USWNT played the whole tournament, but even their best was not enough to make the difference against Sweden and their keeper Zećira Mušović, who made 11 saves (most in one game in the world cup so far) to keep the scoreline 0-0. The final penalty kick that gave Sweden the win was almost saved by USa keeper Alyssa Naeher, until goal line technology (7 cameras located around the field) determined that the ball had crossed the line with a millimeter to spare. A SINGLE MILLIMETER.
It is the first World Cup ever where the USA did not get a medal. People have a lot of opinions on why. Some people blame the coach, who will probably be fired just based on the result. Other people (idiots) blame the team themselves, saying they focus too much on money and advocacy and not enough on the game. These players have worked their entire lives to be on this stage, and often this is the only chance they get. It is insulting to these players to say that their singular focus is not winning the World Cup.
As with a lot of things, the real reason is…it’s complicated. The USA did look disorganized and unprepared in the group stage games, and while Coach Vlakto Andonovski definitely does hold some responsibility, his player pool was also affected by major injuries, and he inherited poor long-term planning strategy from US Soccer. After the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 Olympics, there was not enough done to transition the team from relying exclusively on its older players for goal production. Of the 9 scorers for USA at the 2019 World Cup, only 3 of them were starters in the 2023 World Cup, and only one of them (Lindsay Horan) scored a goal.
As we have also seen this year, this is the World Cup of Chaos. THREE debutantes made it to the knockout stage, while Germany, Brazil, and Canada did not. Teams are better than ever, and can finally challenge the teams that have been considered elite in other years, including the USA. This is a good thing.
Quarterfinals
Spain v. Netherlands
Spain and Netherlands both faced easier opponents in the round of 16, Spain taking down Switzerland and Netherlands taking down South Africa. Netherlands has played more consistently over the course of the tournament, and although Spain has shown some really good moments, I do think their 4-0 loss to Japan is indicative of problems against high-ranked teams, and so Netherlands will likely win.
Japan v. Sweden
Of all the games, I think this is the quarterfinal game that will produce the winner of the World Cup. Japan has been on fire, and has shown that they can win against teams like Spain and Norway AND make it look easy. Sweden fought for their life against the USA, and won; they can use that momentum against Japan. Their keeper Mušović is finding her rhythm, and will be a bigger challenge to Japan than any other keepers the country has faced. My pick for this game is Japan winning, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sweden gets the upset.
Australia v. France
France had an easy win against Morocco in the round of 16, scoring three goals in the first 24 minutes, but only one goal in the rest of the game. Similarly, they had an easy win against Panama in the last group stage match, but were held to only 1 goal in the second half. If France continues to have weak second halves, they could struggle against Australia. The host nation pulls massive crowd support at every game, and has put together strong wins against Canada and Denmark. I think that Australia will use their momentum to put together a win against France.
England v. Colombia
This should be the most predictable result. England should dominate. But they went to penalty kicks against Nigeria, and had close games in the group stage. Colombia beat Jamaica in their round of 16 game, and beat Germany in the group stage, but in both games Colombia was struggling, and many people are saying that it is pure luck that Colombia have gotten to this point in the first stage. I tend to agree, and think England will win this.
