MWW Artwork of the Day (6/1/23) Sir Peter Lely (Dutch/British, 1618–1680) Susanna and the Elders (c. 1650-55) Oil on canvas, 127 x 149.2 cm. The Tate Gallery, London
The subject comes from the biblical Apocrypha. Susanna, a young Jewish wife, was secretly desired by two elders of the community, who plotted together to seduce her. They hid in her garden and when she came out to bathe they emerged and threatened that, unless she gave in to their desires, they would publicly accuse her of adultery -- the penalty for which was death. Susanna, however, spurned them and they duly made their false accusation. She was charged and condemned to die, but at the last minute the youthful Daniel - the future prophet -- cross-examined the elders and established Susanna's innocence. Lely here shows Susanna in her garden, still clothed. To the left is the stone bowl of a fountain topped with a classically inspired sculpture of a naked, weeping boy reclining on a camel, whose curved neck is seen in profile. The two elders, to the right, lean suggestively towards her.

I went to an art exhibition yesterday that was all about depictions of the biblical Susanna theme and how the artists dealt with the depiction of sexual harassment/violence through the centuries.
Among the paintings are two from my favorite Baroque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi, who had been a victim of sexual violence herself.
The exhibition also includes a copy of one of Gentileschi’s paintings plus a fictional underlying drawing created by a Dutch artist to put it into context with Artemisia’s own biography. A powerful piece of art!
An exhibition that made me go through all the emotions from rage to disbelief to sympathy and empowerment. Highly recommend!

Susanna and the Elders, Stefano Maria Legnani
Taken from the Old Testament (Daniel, chapter 13), in which Susanna, is caught bathing in the garden of the palace where she lives by two older men. After she refuses to give herself to them, they get her arrested on false accusations.
from The Art of Exclusion:
One of the great themes of European painting is all about the male gaze. This Biblical story, in which a young woman is spied on by old men, was painted by many Renaissance and Baroque artists because it was an opportunity to depict naked flesh.
Tumblr media
Yet Artemisia Gentileschi turned the tables and painted it from her point of view, making the woman who is being spied on the central character, and showing her anxiety.
