🎤🎶💐🕊 #ArtIsAWeapon Peaceful journeys to powerhouse #singer #TonniSmith (#ToniSmith) - co-writer and featured vocalist on the 1980 Tom Browne smash hit "Funkin' For Jamaica (N.Y.)." The Bronx, N.Y. native recently transitioned, according to social media posts. Thank you for your gift of song, Ms. Smith. This one and "Thighs High" (another Browne track on which she sang and co-wrote) are major parts of my life's soundtrack. I will never not dance and sing to either when I hear them. At eleven years of age, she was entering school contests and was in her first band at the age of 13. The group were [sic] called the Lyndell Experience, who played at various public schools. After leaving the group, Tonni joined another group called The Bronkz. The new group gave her her first opportunity at penning songs herself. By the time she was 18 years of age, Tonni received her first big break when she joined the group The Crystals. It was around this time that she was first introduced to Tom Browne, who took an interest in her after hearing some of her compositions. In 1980, Tonni became the co-writer and lead singer on Tom Browne's 'Funkin' For Jamaica', taken from his 'Love Approach' album outing... Whilst working with Browne, Tonni penned two other compositions, 'Thighs High' and 'Let's Dance' for two subsequent Browne recordings. Tonni then recorded with several artists and released the single 'Ooh I Like The Way It Feels' for the Malaco label in 1983. A further single followed in 1986, entitled 'Can't Stop This Feelin' for the Lisson Records label. Tonni's solo composition 'I've Got The Hots For You' was also utilized by S-Express on their UK No. 1 hit 'Theme From S-Express' in 1988. The matrix seems to have glitched. I'll attempt to re-upload with sound later.) I went to see #Whitney (the documentary) yesterday and left the theatre feeling wildly emotional. I toured with her when I was just getting my feet wet here in LA (1997-1999?). My first show with her was this one, live on HBO, filmed at Constitution Hall in my hometown (so both of my parents were in the audience that night!). I learned so much from this entire organization and still remain very close with many of the band members. I can't even explain how powerful Whitney's gift was and how deeply connected she was to something so much bigger than all of us. But every time she produced a sound, we could all feel that power/connection. She was a once-in-lifetime force and phenomenon and I'm grateful to have had this experience. Shout out to my fellow BGVs in this clip: @pattiehoward and @bigmocha7. And big shout to my dear friend/brother @rickeyminor who continues to be a rock for so many of us. #TBT I went to see #Whitney (the documentary) yesterday and left the theatre feeling wildly emotional. I toured with her when I was just getting my feet wet here in LA (1997-1999?). So my car pick-up to the airport was set for 6:30am. As I'm shutting the car door, I see an email saying my flight was canceled and I was rebooked for 10:50am flight. I considered going back to the room to sleep more but I released my frustration & continued to go to the airport anyway. Once I checked in at the airport I realized that the frustration I had when reading the email had blinded me from seeing that beyond leaving hours later, I had been upgraded to 1st class!!!!Once I got through security I was blessed again to relax in the airport lounge that had free wifi, complimentary food, & drinks!! May we challenge ourselves to not immediately REACT based off of our emotions & what seems to be inconvenient. Let us take inventory of what we do have, what is going right, choose to check our heart & attitude and watch God upgrade us!!!
