This the baby girl I have chosen, I haven't ordered her yet waiting to get everything set up, before hand. Anyway I'm super in love with her rn. She's around a year old, and according to conversions she's less then a pound. She's costing me a pretty penny, but I think she's worth it she's a banana pastel ball python.
I named her Eden Morningstar.
I wanted her name to be connected to the bible/the devil even though I'm an atheist, she's a snake soni wanted that. But I didn't want it to be a basic like Lucy or Lucifer because to many people use those. So I began brainstorming
Morningstar- Lucifers last name
Lilith- Adam's first wife who may have been a succubus
Eve- The first sinner
Eden- the garden
So I eventually settled on either Morningstar or Eden but I rlly couldn't decide so my bsf recommended the joint name

Meet the newest member of the family, Artemis "Artie" Doot Doot. We just brought him home today, and so far they're loving their enclosure. My wife brought me to this local bird and reptile place to hold a snake, basically to get me used to handling them for when we got one in a few weeks. Enclosure was already 99% complete and I fell in love with Artemis immediately. He's somewhere between 8-10 months, male, and uses any pronouns :) For anyone curious, she's a cinnamon banana super pastel ball python. She's lovely!
(There are also approx 4 isopods in there....somewhere. We'll probably never see them again.)

Please tell me about your ball pythons
SURE THING!!! only three of them are actually mine, so i'll be posting those guys first. there's also a bullsnake (who is also not mine) but we'll get to that. i also only have (poor quality...) baby pictures currently OOPS bear with me. we've got... JASPER he's a normal ball python, and the first snake i ever got!! i got him in october of 2018, so he's a few years old by now!! he is the friendliest and most handleable out of everybody i've got. he's about... two or three feet long now i think?
Tumblr media
DANDELION (or dandy for short) he is a banana pastel ball python, and he's a little feisty LMAO. he has bitten me and drawn blood before. i got him in june of 2020, so he's also a few years old!!
Tumblr media
OPAL she is a pastave (pastel + mojave) ball python, and she is the newest addition to my personal collection! i got her in december of 2022, and she is INCREDIBLY shy, but handleable. she is also the best eater out of all of them.
Tumblr media
NOW ONTO THE ONES WHO ARENT MINE!! SOBA this guy is my best friend oz's snake, and he's a banana fire morph. he is absolutely massive, and kinda sucks at eating, but he's getting there!! he's pretty friendly, if i'm honest. i like him :)
Tumblr media
STRING CHEESE this guy is also oz's!! we aren't entirely sure what his genes are, apart from super stripe (and possibly woma? we've noticed he has a wobble/corkscrewing problems, but i don't think it's IBD, because he is a FANTASTIC eater for me, he's super active and healthy otherwise, and we've had him for a WHILE now.) he's an escape artist, and actually got out of his tank for like a day and hid inside of a heater on the wall. it was annoying.
Tumblr media
FRIDA i do not have a picture of frida handy, but he's a normal bullsnake (also oz's) so honestly just google a pic LOL. he's a great eater, and in normal bullsnake fashion, he is feisty. hates being held LMAO. he's named frida after frida kahlo, because of the little unibrow marking :3 he is also super teeny tiny right now... super young guy.

This is a document listing different snake breeds and their specific morphs that might have issues that could affect their quality of life. It is suggested not to buy these breeds as it encourages the sellers to breed more and keep the cycle going of health issues.
Corn snake
Bloodred- Immuno-compromised and weaker immune systems in corn snakes
Sunkissed- Neurological issues/ “Stargazing syndrome” (balance is uncoordinated along with moving in general and they always tilt their head up which very often leads them to just laying on their back)
Palmetto- Enlarged eyes can lead to more common eye infections and what is called “Bug eye syndrome” where their eyes are very enlarged as a birth defect and very prone to infections.
Caramel- Enlarged hearts and sudden death rate
Striped- Enlarged hearts and weakness
Lavender- In breeding lines it is more likely for lavenders to have kinked spines and not survive getting out of the egg. If one snake is proven to not have a kinked spine after birth, then it should have no other health issues.
Ball Pythons
Spider- Neurological Issues (head wobble/ “Wobble syndrome”) and very often starving to death because they cannot aim for their food right or vomit because their body will reject the food
IMPORTANT NOTE: A lot of spider morphs have been renamed and a lot go by the “Bee” morph name now or their spider genetics are masked by another trait they were bred with
Black head x spider morphs masks the spider in them, but the genes remain and make be passed to offspring or show signs later
Super spiders are lethal to the snake
Cinnamon- Neurological issues (Similar to Spider morphs)
Super cinnamons/Super Black pastels are prone to duckbill syndrome and spine kinking
Woma- Neurological issues (Head wobble)
Super Woma morphs can by the name “Pearl” which produces Neurological issues to the point of death
Champagne- Neurological issues (Head wobble)
Champagne x Super Woma produces even more severe neurological issues
Champagne x Spider is incredibly lethal
Super champagnes are lethal
Powerball- Neurological issues (Head wobble)
Spotnose- Neurological Issues (head wobble/ “Wobble syndrome”)
Champagne x spotnose makes Neurological Issues (head wobble/ “Wobble syndrome”)
Spotnose x spider makes Neurological Issues (head wobble/ “Wobble syndrome”)
Super Butters- Eye deformities and prone to eye infections
Super Sabels and Super Black pastels- Prone to duck billing (a jaw/face deformity that can cause breathing problems) and spine kinks
Deserts- producing infertile females and most snakes have reproductive issues
Caramel Albinos- severe kinking issues and fertility issues
Piedbals mixed with Super lesser Platinums or any morphs from BEL complex- small eyes and eye deformities
Bananas/Coral Glow- Sex chromosomes are sometimes messed up and this becomes an issues in breeding, but otherwise the snake should be fine on its own
Western/Plains Hognose
Pink Pastel Albino- Neurological issues and fertility issues
Boa constrictor
Super Motley-  Weak immune systems and won’t survive past their second birthday
Super jungle- Weak livers, infertility and most likely won’t survive to their second birthday.
Super Aztec-  Neurological Issues and balance issues
Blizzard- Lethal genes that kill them
Scoria- Neurological Issues (head wobble)
Super keywest- Will die within 2 years
Super Parsons- Will die within 2 years
RLT- Will die within 2 years
Fires- small eyes, thin and small scales
Onyx/Leopard- Prone to bursting bellies if overfed
Albino- weaker immune systems and poor genetics
Albino x Albino will often produce offspring with missing eyes and other deformities
Texas Rat Snake
Leucistic- enlarged eyes and “bug eye syndrome”
Honduran Milk Snake
Extreme hypo- enlarged hearts and sudden death
Carpet Pythons
Granite- Physical deformities
Jaguar- Neurological issues (head wobble)
Super Jaguar and ivory morphs are lethal

Morph Monday #1 Ball Python pastel gene
The pastel gene was first produced by NERD in 1997. It is an incomplete dominant gene, meaning 1 gene and 2 genes look different. The 2 genes version is called super pastel. The gene intensifies the yellow of the snake, and other common features are green eyes, white lips, high blushing. Some pastels are "high quality" and very blushed and yellow, while others are "low quality and are just a little bit lighter than a normal; there is a whole sliding scale from low-high. Pastel is a very common gene, and they are very inexpensive on the ball python scale. There are different lines of pastel such as citrus pastel, which was invented Amir Soleymani in 2002. Black pastel and green pastel are unrelated to pastel and not interchangeable with it.

Morph Spotlight: Black Pastel
So if you’ve followed me for a while, chances are you’ve seen pics of my snake, August (reminder pics in case you forgot how cute she is). She’s a 1 year old black pastel ball python.
“Black Pastel” is a morph in BPs. Morphs are colors, markings, and/or patterns in reptiles that differ from the “normal” or “wild type”.
BPs are notorious for having hundreds of morphs. Genetic mutations pop up frequently in this species, which is part of what makes them such a popular pet.
Tumblr media
(Above: my pet ball python curled around my hand.)
Here’s a comparison between a normal ball python (the morph found in the wild) and a black pastel. You can see that the normal has large, solid markings in shades of tan that extend to the belly, whereas the black pastel has rounder, hollow markings in orange, gold, or rust shades that are detached from the belly. Black Pastels also tend to be darker overall in coloration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Top: A normal ball python.)
(Bottom: a black pastel ball python)
Black Pastels have some variations in appearance. Some have clear, solid colored markings, while others (like my girl) have dark rims. Some have a striped dorsal pattern (marking along the spine), while others may have a more typical dorsal pattern. Some can be vibrant orange and deep black, while others might be more normal in coloration.
Overall though, Black Pastels have higher contrast and a more aberrant pattern than normals.

(Top: A rust colored black pastel ball python.)
(Middle: A black pastel ball python will more tan/brown, “wild type” coloration. )
(Bottom: a vibrantly colored black pastel ball python)
A similar morph is Cinnamon. They can look near identical, but the two come from separate mutations and are generally considered different morphs.
This is a common occurrence in BPs and is a topic of debate (though we won’t get into that here). Other examples of closely related morphs are butter vs lesser, and banana vs coral glow, among others.
Cinnamon tends to have less vibrancy and contrast overall with more deep brown or “cinnamon” colors when compared with black pastels.
Tumblr media
(Above: A cinnamon ball python. )
Since Black Pastel and Cinnamon are such similar morphs, crossing the two will yield the same results as a Black Pastel x Black Pastel or a Cinnamon x Cinnamon pairing.
A snake that has 2 copies of the same morph is known as a “Super”. Super Black Pastels, Super Cinnamons, and Black Pastel Cinnamons are all solid black snakes with white bellies.

(Bottom: A Super Cinnamon)
Side note: cross any of these solid black snakes with a piebald morph and you'll get an entirely black and white snake known as a "Panda Pied"
Tumblr media
(Above: A ball python with a solid black head and a white body)
These snakes are have a beautiful and striking appearance, but breeding them is controversial as they are likely to have issues with deformed spines, skulls, and/or eyes.
Proponents of these pairings claim that said deformities rarely hinder the snake and don’t prevent the animal from living a normal life. While this may be true, opponents of these pairings believe that no one should intentionally breed animals that have a high probability of having deformities or other issues.
Tumblr media
This snake has a 90 degree kink in its spine just behind its neck. Snakes with kinked spines may have trouble eating, moving, and shedding. In extreme cases, snakes with kinks may not survive infancy.
Tumblr media
This snake has abnormally large eyes, a condition known as “bug eyes”. Snakes with this condition are more prone to eye injuries.
Tumblr media
This snake has a deformed skull, a condition known as “duckbill”. Snakes with this condition may have trouble eating as their jaws don’t always move or close properly.
Of course, Super forms aren’t the only morphs that interact in ways that create new and interesting animals.
Designer morphs are crosses of two or more traits; they are VERY popular among ball python enthusiasts, to the point where most pet stores have one or more designer snakes for sale at any given time.
Some of my favorite Black Pastel Designer morphs are Black Pastel Mojave, Black Pastel Piebald, and Black Pastel Banana.

If you wanna learn more about ball python morphs (or just look at a million pictures of the pretty babies), World of Ball Pythons is an amazing resource.
If you’re looking to purchase a reptile of any kind, Morph Market is an awesome website where you can connect with breeders directly!
And of course, I’m always happy to talk snakes and answer questions :D
