Controversial opinion- the more complex a dish you try and put sausage in, the more likely it'll suck. The ideal sausage dish is just sausage cut up, seared a bit and maybe throw like some honey in there. It doesn't want to be part of an ensemble it wants you to love it for who it is.

There are many things unique to this part of the world that I learned about. I wanted to focus largely on the Nation's history and unique facts, rather than the politics, as I feel when people hear "Syria" only politics and war come to mind. I learned that Syria is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world. The oldest human remains found in Syria date back to roughly 700,000 years ago. Archeologists have uncovered remains of Neanderthals that lived in the region during this period. Ebla, a city in Syria that’s estimated to have existed around 3,000 B.C., is one of the oldest settlements to be excavated. I found this to be very interesting! I love archeology and learning about ancient civilizations, and I wasn’t aware Syria had been inhabited for this long. Throughout ancient times, Syria was occupied and ruled by several empires, including the Egyptians, Hittites, Sumerians, Mitanni, Assyrians, Babylonians, Canaanites, Phoenicians, Arameans, Amorites, Persians, Greeks and Romans.

I learned that some popular dishes in Syria are tabbouleh, a vegetarian salad made with tomato, mint, onions, and other ingredients; sujuk, a spicy fermented sausage; and shawarma, thinly sliced meat stacked in a cone-like shape inside of pita bread. Arabic coffee is one of the most popular drinks and is typically served during family gatherings or when guests are visiting.

The Mediterranean Sea basin is considered a biodiversity hotspot—the Syrian coastline has the most diverse plant and animal life in the country.

On the more serious side of things, according to the 2024 humanitarian needs overview: 90% of the Syrian population lives below the poverty line, more than half the population lacks a stable source of water, over 12.9 million people are food insecure, more than 2 million internally displaced people live in camps and informal settlements, 85% of which is reportedly unable to meet basic needs, and 2.4 million children are out of school

A La Beirut took over the Maru Pit Stop space on the edge of Eagle Rock Plaza. The new Lebanese street food café is focused on Lebanese style sandwiches – pita wraps and baguette sandwiches filled with beef shawarma, chicken shawarma, beef tongue, liver, cheese, lebni, sujuk, etc. They also have salads, fries, hummus, and mutabel. Bottled drinks are kept in the fridge (customers can grab what they like) in the dining area.

Beef tongue on French bread ($12): Beef tongue, black pepper, pickles, fresh mint, lemon juice, garlic paste. I could tell that the sandwich was made with love. The tongue was beefy and very tender. The garlic paste was strong. I liked the abundance of crunchy sour pickles. The fresh mint was also nice. The baguette wasn’t really a proper baguette but it was soft on the inside and very crunchy (they used a panini press to crisp up the bread). The interior of the bread did get a bit soggy. It’s not a huge sandwich, so if you’re hungry, order a side.

I've gone back a few times. The sandwiches are made with lots of love. The liver sandwich is good but the liver is a bit dry. The chicken shawarma pita wrap with garlic sauce is small but packed with flavor. Love how thin and crispy the pita is (they press it).

Online ordering is available. They took out all of the décor that Maru Pit Stop had and didn’t add much, but they play Lebanese (?) music and music videos. The décor is simple and there are only a few tables. Service was friendly. Prices are reasonable.
