So I read 86 LN vol 1

S1 anime covers the entire Vol 1 except for the latter's epilogue, so full anime spoiler here.

And as of this writing, I'm still on Vol 2 so the things I mention here are solely those that happen in Vol 1. Idk if a thing happens in the latter volume, gotta dodge spoiler so I don't browse about it.

There was an interview with a person inside the anime industry that basically said "The point of an anime adaptation is not to be an exact replica of the original material, but to shine as its own medium for a story." I forgot who it was and I can't find the interview anywhere for the life of me, but that statement opened my eyes. I agree with it, that's why I can appreciate the differences between LN/manga and anime, especially if they turn out good and/or interesting.

And that's exactly what happens in 86. I'll start with this: I watched the anime first, and after I read the Vol1 novel, I actually like the anime more. Because there are a lot of meaningful original scenes in it

And because the Vol1 novel turns out exactly what I fear when I first watched the anime: that I won't care much about the squadron aside from the main 5. (Look, the anime promotional materials mostly only have Lena and those 5 only. As shocked as I was in the anime, I did have an idea where the story would go from those alone). The rest are barely mentioned. Not even the girls are named in the novel, even though they do talk and Lecca is even prominent in anime.

For example, the second half of the first episode, the one that shows Spearhead squadron's daily life right before Lena contacts them, is anime original scenes. Kujo already dies the moment the novel starts focusing on the squadron. Simply put, a lot of the squadron members that aren't the main 5 or Kaie get a *lot* more focus in the anime, like Daiya, Haruto (For characters who appear on the introduction page, their novel screen time is less than I'd expect), Kujo and Lecca. While the other members often appear in the background and actually behave like equal members instead of glue-them-on figurines.

(Idk if those other members are named and/or designed in the light novel before the anime is a thing or when the anime becomes a thing.)

The anime also adds relevant information in the Raiden's talk with Lena in EP7, like Kaie receiving racial abuse from 86 (in fact in both versions, she is the first one to get highlighted about this) and Haruto also having prominent Giadian Empire blood like Anju and Shin. These weren't in the novel.

I might be just nitpicking here because I love Kaie and Haruto, but see, this scene is amazing on its own. This is where Raiden and the squad reveal the weight of their motivation all along, that they *each* have different backgrounds and different kinds of sufferings, yet they are all sentenced to die, and they all choose to fight because they know no side is saintly but some things are still worth fighting for.

The prominent characters' deaths (besides Kaie's) are often mentioned with only one or two dry lines. I expected at least Daiya's to be detailed more, but it's just that so matter-of-fact-ly. Well I came from the anime, so I guess it's normal if I expected something as heartbreaking.

I broke down HARD at the last half of EP10 and that is nowhere in the Vol 1 novel. (Having Hands Up to the Sky playing in the background is also an advantage for being an anime. Fuck that song, I now play it 24/7 in despair)

Having a lot of original anime scenes really complement the story's nature. That there are two different sides of life here, it's not just Lena's or 86's only. And those couldn't have intertwined if not for their willingness to listen and communicate.

I know I mentioned this some days ago but really, I can't get over how many of the merch are Lena (and Annette) being cute doing cute stuff while the story itself is actually depressing. Merch staffs know the market lol.

- Novel side -

That said, the novel does have an advantage that the anime/visual media doesn't: Internal explorations and explanations.

It's obvious from the get-go, but Asato confirms that the inspiration of Republic of San Magnolia and its racial discrimination and genocide is taken from Nazi Germany in WW2. The Republic who favors the white/silver haired-eyed Alba drives Colorata out of the 85 sectors, overtakes their properties, and forcibly sends the now-called-86 to either fight their war and die, or work on the wall and die.

The life inside the Republic is also elaborated on. Class always exists, even inside one race only. The center of the republic is for the elites, Lena and Annette's families included. The farther a sector is from the center, the lower the education and economy there is. Most of the military come from these areas, which explains why Lena herself is in difficult situation. Since no one in the military is either capable or willing to bring change.

It's *insane* how easily the Republic could create such vile lies, and how easily the majority of the citizens go along with it.

Gotta admit, Asato does a good job at foreshadowing the fate of the 86, the truth that we can only see after Ep7 of anime. It is mentioned that supposedly, 86 soldiers will be welcomed back once their 5-years term is up. Lena once wonders about it, but ultimately she buys it thinking that surely they must have come back to another sector. She only realizes it's utter bullshit after Annette points out how, 9 years later, they have never seen even one Colorata inside the Republic when they should have seen at least some. This also shows that Lena has never ventured to the other sectors to find out more, probably due to work or maybe she's still a sheltered noblewoman in the end.

And the mentality of the majority of Alba is shown differently. Whereas the anime uses the academy classroom to show how deeply rooted the racism against 86 is, the novel uses Lena's mother who a) more or less does the same as the classroom, and b) presses Lena to get married and preserve their pure noble bloodline. This, when the nobility doesn't actually mean anything anymore. This version shows not only Alba's racism but also Lena's strained family life.

There is a scene of an Alba high school valedictorian who, during his graduating speech, says “My friends died fighting the Legion.” I’m not sure this will make it to the anime, and it’s just a minor scene in the novel, but the weight of that scene is heavy.

The science of Para-Raid is explained, which has something to do with tapping the collective consciousness of humanity and connecting it to one another. A bit far-etched but I guess that works, science fiction and all. But I like the part where despite (or maybe because?) of connecting via hearing only, the other senses are faintly receptive as well. For example, one can sense that the other side is biting their lips in frustration, something like that. Of course, actual real life things like sensing the hidden bitterness or elation in a talking partner's words are present, this being a story where listening matters.

The novel elaborates on Raiden's stay with the Alba old woman. He calls her Old Hag, but it's clear he greatly respects her. The part where she screams and curses in the middle of the road at the Republic soldiers who take Raiden and the other children away stays in Raiden's mind forever, and so it does to me. Ngl it is quite a chilling scene.

Same with the story of the previous Laughing Fox, Theo's Alba commander. It turns out, the entirety of Theo's first squadron didn't like him at all and bet on how fast he'd tuck tail and run back to the Republic. When he faced his death the way Theo explained, he sent a message to Theo revealing he knew about it and knew his place to not ask for acknowledgment or forgiveness. This made Theo regret why he didn't try to talk more with his commander and he keeps thinking about it forever. Now it makes even more sense why Theo, blunt as he is, is willing to listen to Lena and when he snaps, he wonders if his late commander would do the same.

What actually happens in Kurena's backstory is also touched upon. While in the anime some viewers could think "Man, I get where you're coming from but chill out." The novel graphically shows her parents being toyed on by the Alba soldiers while her sister protected her, the two could only watch, and then the same sister got sent to the battlefield to die. Now at that, anyone would think "Man, no wonder she can't chill out. Not with all that trauma."

I also like the addition that Lena can sense Kurena is the one who dislikes her the most.

The novel describes greatly that it isn't just Alba and Non-Alba. Essentially speaking, Non-Alba is called Colorata, and they consist of different race groups as well. Just as Alba is associated with the color silver/white, the other race have their associated colors as well. Asato assigns races to the named members in Vol1 and what their distinguished color features are. This also explains why Anju is exiled despite looking like an Alba.

It's a question that I pondered on when I first saw Shin's armor plates, and that I pondered harder on when Chise died: What happens if there is no armor plate to carve its processor's name's on? So it turns out Shin would substitute it with anything; piece of wood or some random piece of metal. For Chise's case, Raiden, Chise's leader, suggested using the wing of Chise's in-progress airplane model. Which did my heart so bad because I'm strangely fond of Chise and finding out that in his spare time in his limited lifespan, he was working on an airplane model made me sob.

I'm not particularly into mecha, and could care less about how it moves. But Asato did a good job describing the fight between a glorified suicide car and a line of brand-new solid A-grade tanks. Special mention to I-IV because wow the concept arts for all the mechas are so cool, even though I don't really understand. (Asato even said to I-IV "Go draw a tank so horrible it's stupid for the Juggernaut" and I-IV came up with the current Juggernaut)

You know how the Republic greeting is "Glory to San Magnolia and the five-colored flag"? I won't disclose who says this in what situation, but there is someone of Colorata saying "If you hate colors so much, you should have just colored your flag white" AND OOOH THE BURN SO HOT HOT HOT

Tl;dr: Bottom line is, I personally enjoy Vol 1 because I already watched the anime and got attached to it. If I were to read the vol 1 first, most likely I wouldn't fall this hard for the series. Hell, maybe I wouldn't even pick it up in the first place because I knew it'd be depressing. But this is not to say that the LN is bad. It’s very good, it just does not really touch the lives of other soldiers whereas that’s the very thing that I love from the anime.

JANUARY 2021 DIMENSIONS ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULES & REVIEW

A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).

OVERALL COMPANY

Dimensions will be hosting their usual beginning of the year meeting headed by Choi Dongwook this month, as well as the now-normal consultations on creative and music direction. Choi Dongwook will not be present in the directional meetings this year again. The whole company meeting will largely be congratulatory toward the company’s standout acts over the past year or so (namely Dimensions Soloist 3, Unity, and Lucid), but there will be mentions for general plans of all groups and soloists.

Alien wraps up their awards season with performances at the second day of the Golden Disk Awards along with one at the Seoul Music Awards at the very end of the month. Their all-English album releases at the end of the month as well, but there’s not much immediate promotion Dimensions plans for it beyond a few radio interviews due to the amount of promotion they’ve done leading up to it. Instead, the Alien members are asked to prioritize preparing for their Korean comeback by practicing the choreography [2] and going in for fittings.

They’ll be practicing for those ahead of time, but, for the most part, the priority this month is preparing for their Japanese comeback. It’s a slightly shorter time to prepare than the members usually get, but Dimensions wants to capitalize on the renewal of interest “Lion” and Queendom garnered after their earlier 2020 releases didn’t do as well, so they’ll be in the studio to record for the release of their next mini-album. Word has it Dimensions really wants to push 7ROPHY this year to see if they can achieve a consistent level of success and, if they don’t, it may spell being put on the backburner by the company for the foreseeable future.

UNITY

As a congratulations for a job well-down in 2020, January is largely a break month (save for members’ individual schedules) for Unity before they jump into recording for their next comeback next month. From talk among management, it isn’t likely the members will get such a big break for the rest of the year, so they’re told to enjoy it while they can. The only schedule requirement they’ll have this month is to film and, in some cases record in the studio, for videos for their YouTube channel. Management has given them each the option of choosing a cover song, a cover dance, an ASMR video, or a vlog. (admin note: For covers, please don’t use specific cover videos from NCT Music / NCT Dance, since those may be used as specific schedules in the future!)

↳ CHAMPION

The members of the sub-unit are told by management that they won’t comeback until the second half of the year, but they do have a concert at Tokyo Dome scheduled in the spring and, this month, they’ll go in to do a photo shoot for Harper’s Bazaar China together.

LUCID

Their 2020 success nets them three more awards show performances before the rush of shows comes to an end. Besides rehearsal for their performances and fittings for their red carpet outfits for the shows, it’s the final full month of preparation for their comeback, so they have a lot going on for that as well. Practicing their choreography, M/V filming and photo shoots take up the bulk of those preparations this month, plus fittings.

summary: don’t make me laugh promotions ended with a lackluster response. jaein hopes that means dimensions will stop caring about her date: mid-july location: dimensions entertainment word count: 432 words ooc note: just a random self-para about jaein cursing dimensions

jaein thinks the whole reason that dimensions gave her such a bright, youthful sounding song was to make up for the poor response that you and i received. honestly, she’s not sure why dimensions continues to push this double realm on them when it’s obvious that only one realm is actually successful. it’s not like lucid’s image relies a lot on their nightmare realm anyway. not to say that she didn’t enjoy the duality, but it just doesn’t seem smart. but who is she to be worrying about dimensions and their business plans, right? she’s a nobody who’s simply there to follow whatever she’s told to do because she’s under contract.

anyway, against everybody’s expectations except her own, don’t make me laugh doesn’t do very well. and by not very well, she means it doesn’t chart at all. it wasn’t surprising to her, but it must have been surprising to the company because she can hear the whispers from the staff members that consisted of what went wrong? and we were certain it’d attract the public. perhaps it’s a sign that the public really doesn’t care about the members individually, and that their strongest is when they’re performing as a group.

though nobody is outright with her, jaein also knows that they probably blame her for the overall lackluster response. her manager likes to assure her that it was bad timing or something, but she knows that he’s heard an earful from the higher ups about how she wasn’t doing her best or whatever. it’s all bullshit, but she simply smiles and thanks her manager because he’s not the person she should be getting pissed at anyway.

the only good thing that might come out of all of this is dimensions losing interest in marketing jaein. maybe they’ll leave her alone now or at least make her stick to just one thing. she’s still doing alright on variety shows as her amazing saturday appearance proves. while she doesn’t enjoy that either, she thinks it’s better than being thrown to all these different parts of the industry. they can stick to jeonghwa with the portal releases or albums and allow her to be their cash cow on variety shows.

she tries to forget about the whole three weeks because it’s likely that the company will try to as well. they don’t like talking about their failures which works for her. now they’re pushing another normal realm comeback on lucid, and that’s what she should be focusing on.

maybe dimensions will think twice before giving her a music release on her own. thank god.

All idols and key staff members from the three companies have been invited on a joint retreat in Hawaii! Each company has booked a charter plane for their artists that will leave at varying times on the afternoon of June 1 (KST) to arrive in Hawaii on the morning (HST) of June 1. All idols will be on a plane with the other idols and staff from their own company with the exception of Unity, who will take a commercial flight from California to Hawaii due to their schedules, and Origin, who will take a private jet from London to Hawaii due to their schedules.

Attendance is considered mandatory, so if there’s a reason your muse wouldn’t be able to attend the retreat, please clear it with the admin first!

From June 1 to the morning of June 4, everyone will be staying at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa in Maui, Hawaii near the Ka'anapali North Beach (amenities, dining).

From the morning of June 4 to the very early morning of June 7, everyone will be staying at the Mailani Tower wing of The Royal Hawaiian Resort in Honolulu, Hawaii, situated on the beachfront of Waikiki Beach (amenities, dining, around Oahu).

Groups will be staying two or three to a bedroom in multi-room villas or suites and soloists will be staying in individual rooms at both locations. Room arrangements can be found HERE. For groups that are split up, the rooms would have been randomly decided by drawing lots at instruction of a manager.

Everyone will leave very early on the morning of June 7 either back to Seoul or to the location of their immediately following schedules.

Idols will be allowed to explore the islands of Maui and Oahu at their leisure, but there will also be activities specifically highlighted in activity brochures given to each attendee including hiking, surfing, boating, scuba diving, snorkeling, parasailing, sky diving, and cultural and historical tours alongside mandatory events specific to the companies’ retreat that can be found below. Three nights and one afternoon of the trip have mandatory company events, but idols may explore the area the rest of the time.

Please note, managers and security are still on the clock for the entire trip to avoid scandal and sasaeng issues and will be doing their jobs instead of participating in the retreat. All idols will be told they are required to take a manager or security guard with them if leaving the hotel to an area open to the public for their safety. All currently promoting groups/soloists will have pre-recorded their music show stages before leaving for Hawaii.

Idols are allowed to post to social media about the retreat, but are advised not to post their exact public location unless they’ve already left the area to avoid fan mobbing.

Scheduled Activities Overview: (attendance is mandatory for all unless muse is injured/ill)

June 1: First Night Celebration. After a day spent settling in, idols and staff alike will be expected to attend a get together celebrating the first night of the retreat. A grill lounge with a beachfront patio bar not too far from the hotel has been rented out for the event. This is a time for breaking the ice between people who may not know each other as well. The dress code is casual and there will be music and a relaxed atmosphere.

June 2: Dinner Party. A lavish dinner in a hotel ballroom paid for directly out of the pockets of the CEOs of the three companies. Dimensions’ CEO Choi Yeongjin will not be present at the retreat for unspecified reasons but contributed his part to the cost and sends his best wishes. The dress code is semi-formal and the menu will consist of a six-course dinner specially picked by the CEOs themselves. Attendees may choose their own seating and there will be plenty of time for socializing before and after the dinner. Kim Byungchul, Bang Sunyoung, and Choi Dongwook (in place of his uncle) will give short speeches celebrating their companies and thanking their employees.

June 3: Free day/night.

June 4: Game Olympics. In the early afternoon of June 4, after settling into the second resort location, all idols are sorted into teams along with select staff members and will compete in a series of games in a large convention room at the resort as a form of team-bonding. Games include classics like trivia and charades as well as a range of team-building games. If a muse happens to be ill or injured, they’ll only participate in the games they’re able to. Teams can be found HERE. Prizes will be granted to first, second, and third place winners. Randomly generated final rankings for all teams can be found HERE.

June 5: Free day/night.

June 6: Last Night Celebration. Similar to the first night, this will be a mandatory get together to celebrate the end of the retreat and continue the good feelings of the trip. Attendees will be treated to a private traditional Hawaiian celebratory performance and a top of the line dinner menu as part of a sit-down dinner vignette show on a private lawn bordering a private stretch of beach. Once the show finishes, attendees are free to help themselves to the private beach or a nearby pool with a poolside bar as they wish. The dress code is casual clothing (optionally) over swimwear.

In game, this event takes place on from Saturday, June 1, to Thursday, June 6, but threads and other posts for this event may be started from Sunday, May 26, at 12PM EDT (the time this post goes up), to Sunday, June 16, at 11:59PM EDT. Threads may be continued past the end date, but must be started before then and are no longer eligible for points past the end date. Non-event related interactions may be conducted during this time as well.

I Hate Tuesdays || A Self Para

*TW: Mentions of abuse, mentions of violence

Alba decided she hated Tuesdays.

She tipped the wine bottle upside down, emptying the last few drops into her already full glass. To say that her day had gone badly was an understatement. Her day had to have been constructed specially by the universe to completely f her over. She had woken up that morning optimistic; she had a nice, long shower, her train came on time and she even managed to get a free coffee from the barista she frequently flirted with at the coffee shop a block up from the Rail.

But then she saw the dismayed looks on most of her colleagues faces. The same colleagues she had been competing with for the head writers position for the past few months. It was all friendly, of course. She only truly hated one or two people on staff and that was only because they were privileged idiots and constantly lorded it over the rest of them. The others she tolerated enough to smile and greet as she walked to her desk. Her desk, like most on their floor, was a tornado of organized chaos. Anyone would look at it once and wonder how she ever managed to get any work done. For her, she knew where everything was. She could navigate with her eyes closed and most of the time, was able to grab whatever she needed without looking away from her computer.

So, when she saw the bright, yellow sticky note taped to her computer, she frowned. ‘Come see me in my office, thanks, Xavier”. Simple and ominous. She plucked from her blank monitor and glanced around to the others, who all seemed to be trying too hard to avoid looking at her. Alba rolled her eyes and set down her coffee, purse and shrugged off her jacket before traveling the sea of desks to get to the editor’s office- which she hoped would be hers one day. It was situated on the corner of the building with windows on all sides looking out at the city. The only downside was that it had a pretty open view to the entire floor, meaning no one could pull any while he was sitting pretty at his big, modern desk with a cup of coffee and a perpetually dissatisfied expression.

She knocked on his door and entered when she heard the gruff, “come in” from the other side. Xavier was pacing behind his desk, his blue tooth on his ear. He gestured for her to sit at one of the leather chairs in front of his desk, which she did without hesitation, watching as he ushered whomever was on the other line off the phone.

“Yeah, I got it Janine… Yep… No, we can’t do that piece next month, we had to move it to December… Look, at this point, I don’t care. Let him know we have a circulation of 500,000 issues and about a million plays to review in New York. He wants an interview? Tell him to get available.” With that, he tugged the headset from his ear and tossed it on his desk. “Swear to god, these new age playwrights get a sold out opening night and suddenly they think they’re the god damned Shakespeare of their generation. Didn’t you deal with that wannabe last year, Sutton? The Italian guy, what was his name?”

“Phil Columbo?” Alba answered, obviously amused. “Yeah, I reviewed his one-man musical about the gentrification of Brooklyn Heights. Not subpar, but not the next Jonathan Larson of Alphabet City.”

Xavier shook his head and plopped down in his large, comfortable looking chair. “Yeah, you’re gettin’ him in December. I can’t deal with divas and you seem to like em’.”

“I like talent.”

“That’s what I said, didn’t I?” he shot back offhandedly before clearing his throat and settling into his desk properly. “You do good work, Sutton.”

Alba’s brows shot up in surprise. Getting a compliment from Xavier was like getting a blessing from the Pope at the Brooklyn Rail. His word was bible. “Thank you.”

“And you’re talented. I don’t say that a lot.” Yeah, no shit. “You’re the youngest writer on my staff, you outwork most of the people who’ve been here for years and you consistently give this magazine great content.”

She should have been basking in the praise, smiling like some idiots who got a gold star in Kindergarten. But something felt off. Something about the way he said the words set up an expectation for something bad to come. “I feel a “but” coming on…”

“That’s because there is.” Xavier said, his face both remorseful and disappointed. “If it were up to me, you’d be getting that head writers position. But unfortunately, it’s not just up to me.”

It took a few moments for her to grasp the words completely. There was always a good chance that she wouldn’t get the position, she knew that. But hearing it and expecting it were two completely different things. She felt like cold water had been splashed over her body, igniting every nerve in her body and making her fully aware of just how much that single sentence hurt. “Oh…”

Xavier sighed and sat back in his seat. “I could dance around with numbers and give you some sugarcoated excuse as to why you’re not changing your title, but I know you’re too smart for that. The fact of the matter is that you’re young and you’re not as tenured. Mikey, he’s been with us 11 years. It’s a matter of who is going to get the most respect and right now, that’s not you, kid.”

She wanted to yell at him and tell him that Mikey hadn’t written a good article since the West End run of “Cats”, but she knew that would leave her without a job and possibly blackballed in the New York journalism circuit. She wanted to tell him that she could get respect from anybody she talked to because that was just the kind of person she was. Instead, she sat and listened, her eyes not really focusing on Xavier or anything for that matter.

“I don’t have these conversations often because I don’t feel like I need to explain myself, but you’re different.” He said, his lips pursed in a thin line. “You wanted it. You worked for it and I saw that. I appreciate it. It’s just…”

“Nobody respects me.” She finished for him, her tone a tad bitter.

“Nobody respects you as supervisor material.” Xavier admitted. “Not now anyway. We respect the hell out you, you know that. Now’s just… not the time for you.”

The conversation had ended after that and she dragged herself through the rest of the day with as much grace as she had mustered. But of course, life hit her. Hard. Her interview with a rising, prominent artist had been cancelled, she spilled coffee all over her new shirt and just when her incredibly shitty day had come to an end, she missed her train and had to wait an hour for the next one. By the time she got home, she was a walking ball of nerves and irritation.

She drank from her wine glass and started to settle into her couch for a night of tipsy Netflix watching and trying to forget about the incredibly terrible day she had when a knock suddenly sounded at her door. She frowned. She hadn’t texted Mari, Terry or Siobhan about not getting the promotion yet, so it wouldn’t be them and Raul would never come over without texting first. With a heavy and irritated sigh, she stood up and crossed to her door to look through the peep hole. She froze as a face she hadn’t seen in a very, very long time appeared on the other side. Without another thought she reached forward and yanked her door open to glare at her mother on the other side.

Yelena smiled at her as if they hadn’t not been in contact in over ten years. She was exactly as Alba had remembered. Beautiful, long dark hair and big brown eyes. There were a few wrinkles on her face that weren’t there before, but she looked as if she had stepped out of a page of Alba’s memory. Or a nightmare of hers.

“Alba…” She started, looking her over. “It’s been a long time.”

She wasn’t sure what to say to the woman before her. She could feel the angry glare burning on her face, a distinct feeling of rage creeping up within her that she wasn’t sure she was going to be able to hold in. “12 years.”

Yelena nodded. “Yeah… how have you been?”

Alba stared at her in disbelief. “How have I been? That’s it?” She rolled her eyes and then squeezed them shut, a headache forming at the stress of her day. “What the f- How did you find me?”

“…I hired a private investigator.” She admitted, her smile turning sheepish. “You changed your last name, so-“

“Yeah, so that you wouldn’t find me.” Alba snapped at her.

Yelena sighed, adjusting her purse on her arm and Alba realized, suddenly, that it was designer. In fact, everything she wore was expensive, from her shoes to her coat and even her hair cut. Alba blinked at her, wondering how her mother -the woman who couldn’t hold a job to save her life- could afford those kind of things. “Alba, sweetie, I don’t want this to be antagonistic-”

“Oh wow, “antagonistic”, that’s a big word, Yelena.” She said sarcastically, crossing her arms over her chest. “It’s good to see that the drinking didn’t completely destroy your brain cells.”

“I didn’t come here so that you could insult me, Alba.”

“Then why are you here?”

Yelena sighed and looked down at her hands, perfectly manicured and weathered at the same time. “I... just wanted to see you. See how you were doing.”

Alba raised an eyebrow at her, completely skeptical. “You wanted... to see me?” She scoffed and cast her eyes to the ceiling in exasperation. “Ten years and you’re still a terrible liar. You wanted to see me? Where were you when I was in the hospital for a month after you set our apartment on fire?”

Yelena cringed at the words, at least having the decency to look ashamed. “Alba...”

“Where the hell were you when I was put into foster care? Where were you at my high school graduation, or my college graduation for that matter? You know I worked three jobs to put myself through school because I had nobody and ten years later, you want to see me?” Alba didn’t realize that half way through her rant, tears had started to pool in her eyes. Not because she was sad, she would never give the woman in front of her the satisfaction, but because she was angry. “Pick another lie because I don’t buy that shit.”

Her mother sighed. “I deserve that... Believe what you want, it’s true. I’ve.. done a lot of growing up and I just want to make amends.”

Alba, with a bored and disbelieving expression, scoffed at her words. “Cry me a river.”

“Why are you acting like I don’t know I made mistakes?” Yelena said, the words coming out quickly and with an emotion that made them waiver ever so slightly. She looked close to crying too, her eyes red and her lips forced into a thin line. “I did, Alba. I made a lot of them, most of them with you. I don’t know what you want me to say!”

“An apology would be nice.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Fuck you.”

To Alba’s surprise, Yelena gave her a sad smile in return. “Crazy thing is, you sound a lot like me.”

“No, I sound a lot like Alba.” She shot out, shaking her head. “You don’t get to take credit for anything but a strong liver, great hair and childhood trauma.” She leaned against her door and shrugged. “So last chance. You tell me why you’re really here or I slam the door in your face. Your pick.”

Yelena stared at her for a moment, looking unsure of what to say. Alba couldn’t really blame her. If she had been a bad mother, she wouldn’t be sure what to say to her kid either. The fact that she even had the gall to knock on her door would have been impressive if Alba hadn’t hated her so god damn much. She reached in her expensive purse them and pulled out a small, rectangular piece of paper and held it out for her. Alba glanced at the paper and then back at her, slowly taking it and looking it over. It was a check, one with her name and “$25,000″ in the amount line. Alba’s eyes widened as she stared at hit and she looked up at her mother in shock.

“Why the hell are you giving this to me?” She said, hastily putting it back into the woman’s hand.

The older woman took the check back looked at it, smoothing it over with her fingers as she spoke. “I got married five years ago. He’s... a really good man. He helped me get sober, get back on my feet. He paid for the private investigator to find you. He’s... going to be running for political office soon.”

Alba raised a brow at her. “And... what the hell does that have to do with you handing me a check for $25,000?”

“...He had a lot of my criminal record sealed, including the neglect and arson charge from... that day.” Yelena explained to her, clearing her throat uncomfortably. Alba didn’t know what pissed her off more. That she wasn’t exactly the woman she was from all that time ago, or that she was trying to act like that person was long gone. “I’m his wife, we can’t have any... scandals, affecting his campaign. If anybody found out that I had a daughter that I left behind... it wouldn’t be good for him.”

It slowly pieced together. And when the puzzle was complete, Alba was filled with an anger she hadn’t felt in a very long time. The anger that only came from a frustrated kid who just wanted somebody to come and whisk her away from her horrible life. Yet no one ever came. It was an anger with her mother as the singular focus. “You’ve... got to be out of your god damned mind.”

Yelena clenched her eyes shot and cringed. “Alba, just think about-”

“Oh, I don’t have to think about anything!” She yelled, not caring if her neighbors heard her rage filled words. Yelena had the good sense to take a step back as her daughter unleashed her anger. “Do you even remember all the shit you did to me? Do you remember all the times I had to defend myself when you went on some drunken episode? I had to lie to my teachers and tell them I fell. There were times I had to stay home from school because sometimes I couldn’t hide the bruises.”

Yelena listened to her with tears in her eyes and shame on her expression, but it wasn’t enough for Alba to feel satisfied. She wanted the woman in front of her to hurt just like she did. “I think we should take this inside-”

“You’re out of your fucking mind if you think you’re stepping foot in my house.” She snapped, her words low and vicious. She scoffed lightly and shook her head. “Years of court ordered therapy by CPS and I still can’t function properly.” She sounded hysterical at this point, letting her words move out of her without thought of consequence. It was like a dam had been broken and there was no way to stop the rushing waters from flowing free. “I spent a lot of time wondering what I had done wrong. Because what kind of child couldn’t be loved by their mother?”

Yelena tried to reach forward, her hand open in a caring manner that Alba wasn’t used to. “None of that was your fault!”

Alba ripped way from her. “How the hell was I supposed to know that? I was a kid trying to raise myself. You know, because of you I’m just some hyper sexual, asshole whose walking around angry all the god damned time with absolutely no decent moral compass and a deep embedded distrust of men. Because you had guys coming in and out of our apartment and more times than not, I had to lock my bedroom door because some of them would try to get in. You took everything that was good and decent about my life and you crushed it with your bare hands.”

They were both crying now. Yelena stood silently, tears running down her face while Alba had to catch her breath. “The only thing I hate more than you is the fact that deep, deep, deep down, I still wish we could have been different.” Yelena started to open her mouth but Alba cut her off. “And don’t you dare say that things can be different now, because I know you’re not that naive so... just go. We don’t have anything else to talk about.”

Her mother pressed the check forward again. “Alba, I know you have student loans and bills-”

“Which I will take care of, I don’t want your money and I don’t give a fuck about you or your husband, so just fucking go.” She sounded exhausted by the end of the sentence, emotionally and physically done with the small conversation.

Yelena, stubborn as stubborn was, leaned down and placed the check on her doormat between them, putting a business card along with it. “That’s one of two. I can give you the other half when you agree not to say anything about... that.”

“Woman up and say it.” Alba spat out with a shrug. “Your incredibly shitty and abusive attempt at being a mom.”

“...If I could take back everything I did, I would.” Yelena admitted, her tone close to a whisper. “I want you to know that.”

Alba didn’t respond, just stared at her dead in the eye and glared. “Go, before I call the cops and have them wheel your unconscious body out of my hallway.”

The threat was sharp and enough to make Yelena jump slightly. She gave her one final look and turned on her heel to leave. Alba wasted no time in slamming her door shut, her vision blurred with angry tears. She managed to stomp back over to her wine, not realizing how badly her hands were shaking until she brought the glass to her lips. Everything that she had repressed and forgotten about in the ten years since she had last seen that woman rushed forward to the forefront of her mind. She was suddenly a little girl again, scared and curled up in her bed. She was that little that she thought she had grown up from. But here she was.

With an angry cry, she threw the wine glass across the room and watched it shatter against the wall, red wine splattering across her furniture and floor. Her chest heaved up and down, trying to take in air that just wouldn’t come. After awhile, her legs were unable to hold her up and she crumpled to the ground, crying and feeling sorry for herself and the girl that she was.

She really fucking hated Tuesdays.

WHO moves ‘almost far enough‘ on sun-setting of the Code – 10,000 support IBFAN’s call

148th WHO Executive Board Meeting (EB148) (18 – 26th January 2021)

In November we wrote about the proposals to Sun-set reporting on the Code. Since then we have we had a series of meetings and correspondence with WHO Senior Staff, several Member States have called for reporting to the World Health Assembly to continue after 2030 and a La League International petition has attracted over 7,500 signatures.

We warmly welcome WHO’s assurance that:

There is no proposal to sunset the code, a crucial public health instrument.

WHO is strongly committed to the Code and the protection of breastfeeding;

WHO regrets any unintended consequence of a broader governance issue implying a lack of WHO’s support for the Code and says this should be corrected.

well before 2029 WHO will be consulting on promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding, digital marketing, underlying determinants of poor breastfeeding and the public health relevance of adequate breastfeeding (deaths accounted for)

However, ambiguity remains because the Decision passed in November (WHA73/26 ) still calls for reporting – but only ‘until 2030’. The pressures on WHO to work in partnership with the private sector rather than hold companies accountable are clearly increasing. Will the reporting obligations embedded in the Code and WHO Constitution be forgotten or overlooked? The food industry has wanted the Code removed from the WHO agenda for decades, knowing that Member States reports to the Assembly prompt new resolutions that keep pace with continually evolving marketing. WHO has a duty to keep watch on all commercial promotion that has the potential to harm health – whether on baby foods, tobacco. junk foods, or alcohol.

In a new Document EB148/33, published for WHO’s Executive meeting the Code is not on the list of 47 Resolutions proposed for ‘sun-setting.’ There are also several new safeguards: “the sun-setting of reporting requirements aims to improve agenda management and does not signify that work pursuant to the relevant resolution has ceased.(para 7), “the Secretariat proposes to clearly indicate to the governing bodies when a final report on progress is presented to the governing bodies, such that Member States may provide any additional guidance in terms of future reporting.” (para 8)

In order to ensure there is no misunderstanding in coming years, IBFAN is calling on Member States to intervene during the debate on EB148/33 (Pillar 4, Agenda Item 19.2 WHO Reform) to insert the following clarifying amendments:

If it is possible to open WHA73/26, Add a footnote referring to EB148/33 making it clear that reporting on the Code will continue beyond 2030.

Add the following amendments to the list of exceptions in Para 5 of EB148/33 :

The International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes is an exception because it is in a ‘class of its own’ in terms of international human rights instruments and the WHO Constitution. It places affirmative obligations on Member States and on the WHO Director General to implement it and on commercial companies to comply with it.

The reporting obligations under Article 11.6 of the Code refer to article 62 of the WHO Constitution. It follows that reporting by Member States is part of their obligations under Article 62 of the Constitution. Therefore, any interference with this obligation, or any attempt to change it, would be incompatible with the Constitution.

Note on the Human Rights implications. UN CRC General Comment no. 15 and 16 (2013) and UN ECOSOC General Comment no. 24 (2017) in combination with International Court of Justice Judgement of 30 November 2010 concerning Ahmadou Sadio Diallo (Republic of Guinea v. Democratic Republic of Congo). Also see Extraterritorial Obligations and the Code_Feb 2018 Discussion paper, February 2018 The Maastricht Principles on Extraterritorial Obligations of States in the Area of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes.

Background

Although 2021 is not a reporting year for the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, it is the 40th Anniversary of its adoption, so it is important that this is celebrated as a critical public health instrument to protect children’s and women’s lives from marketing practices that interfere with informed infant and young child feeding decisions and undermine breastfeeding.

However, IBFAN was taken by surprise in 2020 by a WHO proposal to end reporting of Resolutions that are more than 6 years old. The problems started in February 2020, during the EB146 when the WHO Secretariat (as part of its Reform Process) proposed that biennial reporting on Maternal, Infant and Child Nutrition (including the Code) should end by 2026. We mounted a campaign calling on WHO and Member States to reconsider.

In June the BMS Call to Action was launched claiming to be a ‘fresh’ and ‘industry savvy’ strategy to achieve voluntary Code compliance by 2030. IBFAN published a Counter-Call – asking WHO and UNICEF to disassociate themselves and focus instead on helping Member States adopt legislation.

In November, a revised sun-setting Decision was adopted – this time with the longer deadline of 2030. IBFAN and our partners remained concerned because this still amounted to ‘sun-setting’, albeit 4 years later. Several Member states asked for reporting to continue beyond 2030

In December La Leche League International (Mexico) started a petition supporting IBFAN’s Counter-call and sun-setting. The petition now has attracted over 7,500 signatories.

We had a series of meetings and correspondence with WHO Senior Staff to explain that:

The reporting requirements of the November Decision (WHA73/26) have not been amended and still refer to reporting continuing ‘until 2030’.

There is no evidence that marketing that harms children is decreasing nor is it likely to end by 2030;

WHO and Member States Code have obligations under the WHO Constitution and the Code to report biennially to the World Health Assembly on their progress in implementing the Code;

19 Resolutions have been adopted since 1981 that have helped governments keep pace with evolving marketing strategies and adopt legislation on health and nutrition claims, free and low-cost supplies of breastmilk substitutes and conflicts of interest in health care and monitoring.

The Code is not a time-specific action plan or goal like the MDGs or SDGs.

The removal of the reporting obligations embedded in the Code will have serious consequences for maternal and child health.

EB148/39. Agenda Item 19.5. Report on the implementation of the Framework of Engagement with Non-State Actors (FENSA)

IBFAN and many public interest organisations have consistently worked to protect WHO from undue commercial and political influence – long before the development of FENSA. Member States refusal to lift the long-standing ban on raising assessed Member state contributions to WHO, has placed WHO into a severe institutional conflict of interest – a conflict between its mandate (its ‘primary interest’) and the need to collect funds.

The development of FENSA , which calls all kind of actors ‘stakeholders’ or ‘partners’ blurs the fundamental differences between actors in terms of power, interests, and legitimate roles. It has certainly, as we feared, drawn WHO, Member States and public interest NGOs deeper into a world that favours business and private philanthropies’ interests.

Sadly, WHO has failed to correct its conflict of interest definition, which is based on a Gates-funded project and used by the Scaling-Up Nutrition (SUN) initiative, a public-private hybrid that IBFAN has criticised from its inception. SUN and FENSA promote the idea that complex problems can only be solved if ‘all stakeholders’ work together in ‘partnership.’ In reality when there are no shared goals, inappropriate partnerships can seriously undermine WHO’s purpose.

For IBFAN and those working on issues related to marketing, we can feel the pressure to move away from independent monitoring, strong regulations and holding corporations accountable for their actions, to start trusting and believing corporate promises and multi-stakeholder partnerships – all the while pretending this is moving us forward to a safer and more equitable world.

Sadly, none of these fundamental issues are properly addressed in the FENSA evaluation. The COVID crisis has shown the world the importance of having a strong and brave WHO – please lets make it can also be independent.

Item 5 Global action on Patient safety. (Due to technical problems at WHO we were not able to read the Statement. It will be on WHO’s NSA platform until WHA74.

IBFAN, is the 40-year old global network working in partnership with WHO to end harmful marketing that undermines breastfeeding and child health. We are pleased to contribute to the debate on patient safety and Universal Health Coverage, on behalf the world’s youngest citizens, newborn babies, and their right to be safely delivered into an environment free from commercial influence.

We appreciate WHO and UNICEF’s COVID-19 guidance on the care and feeding of newborns that is being widely adopted and helping to ensure that mothers and babies are not cruelly separated from each other unnecessarily on the basis of false information.

IBFAN has on-the-ground experience of how baby food companies are exploiting the pandemic and adding to such misinformation. Companies have devised YouTube channels with doctors suggesting that mothers stay 6 feet away from their babies, they sponsor the training of medical students, they promote breastmilk substitutes with false claims that they build immunity and protect against viruses. Such marketing violates WHO’s clear guidance on marketing and conflicts of interest and puts babies health at risk. Yet companies persist, pretending their support is ‘Humanitarian’ and that they are suitable partners in nutrition. Poorly-resourced health workers who are not well informed will not know who to trust.

When considering funding for UHC we must remember the 8 WHA Resolutions that call for Conflicts of Interest safeguards – forbidding the baby food industry from funding or influencing the infant and young child feeding arena. Partners who work against public health goals do not help. Strong legislation is the way to make harmful practices and misinformation a thing of the past. Thank you

IBFAN statement on 19.1 WHO Transformation

As a global network working in partnership with WHO for over 40 years, IBFAN is pleased contribute to this debate. IBFAN’s primary work centres around the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and its 19 clarifying Resolutions.

When implemented well, the Code helps Member States hold corporations accountable for practices that harm health and will help ensure that the WHO Reform does not subvert WHO’s constitutional mandate of health for all and the world’s regulatory and standard setting body in international health matters.

Unless checked, increased emphasis on technological approaches can drain national resources and undermine essential primary health care that save lives.

It is not wise that ‘all stakeholders’ work together in partnership. Partners that work against public health goals are not good partners – however friendly they may sound. We have seen how the baby food industry exploits COVID-19, undermining WHO guidance and ignoring the 8 WHO resolutions on Conflicts of Interest. This industry should have no role in funding or influencing infant feeding.

We are pleased to have WHO’s reassurance that the International code will not be sun-setted. However an ambiguity remains in WHA73/26 that still calls for reporting ‘until 2030’.

We call on Member states to clarify EB148/33 with an amendment to Paragraph 5. Any interference with WHO and Members states obligation to report to the WHA would be incompatible with WHO’s Constitution.

Through the Lens of a Thomasian: DRRR in Brgy.471

I’ve been in the comforts of Dapitan in the past three years. Away from my parents, family, and home. I reside in a 4-cornered room at Navarra Street- part of Brgy. 471 zone 46. Although I can draw a photo of this small Brgy. in my head, I have never really looked at it as a place of permanence. To me, it is only a temporary sanctuary as I live out my college years, but to the families who stay here and the students who plan to stay here, this is their lives; and the safety, security, and comfort within these streets are more than a necessity. So I explore the disaster risk reduction that Brgy. 471 implements, in the process, learning about our local government, the people of the barangay, and my role as a Thomasian in this community.

I approached a small office just along Navarra street. The place was smaller than my room. It had two desks, one side table with snacks, and two large television screens that gave the officer on duty a clear street view of the barangay. I approached the sir in the orange shirt, introduced myself as a student of the university. The officer was kind enough to let me interview him and as generous with detailed answers.

Sir Ron “Ronron” Lapil had lived his whole life here. He is currently the barangay tanod and at that time, was the only one on duty. He explains to me that the barangay conduct seminars for their officials every year from earthquake drills, self-defense, psychology classes to detect suspicious movements, and others.

In the past, Brgy. 471 has dealt with a lot of flooding issues from heavy rainfall but since the streets have been elevated a few years ago, it has not been a problem anymore. Recent earthquakes are the issue the barangay is more concerned about as the structures around the area are built very closely together, but for Sir. Lapil, any disaster can be avoided through preparedness; this is exactly why the local barangay conducts earthquake drills within their staff and post awareness materials on their Facebook page.

One main concern of the barangay is not the natural or man-made calamities that may occur, but the violence around the area. Although it has highly decreased in recent years, there are still some reported cases. The cases of riding-in-tandems remain an issue with the last report coming from one month ago. For sir Lapil, it should always be self-awareness that should be employed when it comes to these situations, especially late at night. Although the barangay does make rounds to ensure everyone’s safety, it is better to keep our valuables secured too.

Walking around Brgy. 471

On regular days, the streets are crowded by students and working adults but on holidays, they are quiet as everyone is either at home in the province or resting quietly in their rooms. The population consists mostly of students, only a few families live in the area. It could also be observed that the place has no bars or smoking areas - this is a direct implementation of the city ordinance, the barangay makes sure that the order of the city is followed.

The buildings around the area are indeed all cramped, some were also very old which only confirms’ Sir Lapil’s statement on the area prone to earthquake damage.

The barangay makes sure that the sewages are kept clean, on Saturdays, trash collectors are deployed to keep the streets free of garbage as to not clog the drainage of the area- this is important as UST is a very flood-prone area.

In the end, it is important to remember that risk reduction should not only come from our local governments but also within our actions through our cooperation and active involvement in government activities. As sir Lapil would say “Lahat may kapasidad upang protektahan ang sarili, kami [barangay officials] ay nandito lang para mabawasan ang ‘risk’”

KQED, the local PBS affiliate in San Francisco, hired me on three separate occasions. Perhaps my first four month stint of lambasting pledge; mocking the union slugs; and wearing a “I Hate Public Television” button didn’t alienate enough of the self-righteous to not ask me back.

During the second stretch at KQED, Yan Can Cook, a favorite cooking show of mine, ended up as one of my management responsibilities. Martin Yan, a charming and energetic man, had still not mastered the English language. While this elevated the whimsical personality of the brand, it did cause some consternation amongst his underwriters and sponsors.

One day, after rousing the stage manager from her stupor, we shot promos for the show.

Angry Stage Manager: “Fisherman’s Wharf Consortium. Promo! On. 5, 4, 3 . . . “

Martin Yan: “And dis time of yee-ah, you can take a trip to Fishahman’s Woof, where you can enjoy fresh Dungeness CRAP! And—”

Angry Director: “Cut!”

Martin Yan: “Problem?”

Legend has it that KQED lost the Fisherman’s Woof sponsorship. In the interest of keeping the stupid racism accusations to a minimum, I won’t cover the shoot day with the guest Thai chef who came on Yan Can Cook to make something with peanut sauce.

And if Martin Yan’s questionable diction were the only issue at KQED, and by extension PBS, the very concept of public broadcasting wouldn’t be so irksome. But in addition to top-heavy management, labyrinthine union rules, and the whiny production personnel, KQED’s programming, more of it on the public dime than any stooge at MSNBC will ever admit, ran tried and true to its appeal to aging hippies, angry minorities, guilt-ridden Caucasians.

In other words, less than 50% of the potential market at best.

A typical spate of an evening’s fare, consisting of 99% national feed and 1% of the pathetic excuse for local programming, laid out, with some embellishments as follows:

6pm – 7pm – The McNeil-Lehrer News Hour(of some clone thereof) – Tonight our two Woodward and Bernstein Wannabes present the news of past week with an emphasis on sticking a thumb in the eye of traditional Americans. Our field reporters, recently returned from their internships at the Kremlin, go on location to cover obtrusive American Imperialism in the four corners of the world.

7pm – 8pm – TWIT BAY AREA – This Week In The Bay Area.A series of featurettes on the topics that interest the residents of Kooktown, USA (In fairness, KQED does refer to the city as San Francisco) and its environs. Among tonight’s topics: The concept of White Privilege will be beaten to death by a KQED producer of color who couldn’t make it in the private sector. An inside look at the local burgeoning activist community. And our weekly expose on some rich, white people who just don’t pay their fair share of taxes.

8pm – 9pm – Beverly.A documentary produced by our sister station, WGBH/Boston. It’s the story of a young hermaphroditic transsexual who always felt, deep down inside, that they were a little ‘different.’

9pm – 10pm – Enrico.A documentary produced by our sister station, WGBH/Boston. It’s the story of a young hermaphroditic transsexual who, in addition to being an undocumented person of color, always felt, deep down inside, that they were a little ‘different.’

10pm – 11pm – Masterpiece Theater, Midsommer Murders or Agatha Christie Mysteries.

The beauty of KQED programming, and by extension PBS, is that you could fill out the viewing schedule in a matter of minutes for all seven days of the week. A name or title change here and there for the documentaries produced by WGBH, and a veryshort list of the topics that The MacNeil – Lehrer News Hour (Or some clone thereof) and TWIT BAY AREA dared touch and whoever had the job of scheduling at KQED had a very cushy job.

As mentioned earlier, KQED hired me twice in the early 90’s. They also brought me back in the mid-90’s for one more go at mind control assisting with The MacNeil – Lehrer News Hour, but after a third lunch with the local producer of the show did not yield the appropriate responses from Yours truly, the Che Guevara fan club, also known as Human Resources, gave up.

My last lunch with said producer went as follows:

Edward R. Murrow: “I just love Bill Clinton.”

Me: “He’s a lecherous, morally-repugnant layer of veneer. Putting him the White House was bad enough, but now that we’ve lowered the bar for entry, I think anyone can get in.”

Edward R. Murrow: “Check!”

It may have lasted longer than that, but by the time Ed Murrow stomped out of the sad excuse for a watering hole in which we dined, my membership in the Go Along to Get Along Club had been officially rescinded.

The sheep mentality engendered by employment within PBS aside, another aspect of working at KQED involved dealing with NABET, the labor union at the station started by the Cromwells. Given the work ethic and attitude with which the membership approached their jobs, the acronym stood for Not A Bit of Effort, Toots.

KQED’s scheduling department, with I which had to deal on an hourly basis, presented the only upside to this situation. The three main people, Jim, Jerry, and Simon must have gone home every night and beaten the dog, given the obstacles consistently put in their way. Their boss, Larry, should have been canonized during his tenure.

Requesting even an hour’s time of one of the 682 skilled laborers present at the station on a daily basis generated enough paperwork, Prilosec, and Sturm Und Drang to mount a summit meeting between superpowers.

Simon: “Scheduling. Dis is Simon.”

Me: “Simon, it’s George in unit managers. I need an hour of audio this afternoon.”

Simon: “I don’t have anybody.”

Me: “I saw a couple hundred of the NABET guys down at the Slo-Club, great name for a hang out for them by the way, having a 27 course lunch.”

Simon: “Yes, Dey on break.”

Me: “I get it. When dey back from break, can I get one of the audio guys or gals to record some V.O. in the booth at three o’clock?”

Simon: “Two.”

Me: “Okay, two o’clock, but I don’t think they’ll even be through the soup course by then.”

Simon: “No. You need two people to run audio in booth.”

Me: “First of all, I didn’t think you hadanybody. Second, that booth isn’t big enough for one person, let alone two. What are theygoing to do?”

Simon: “One to adjust microphone. Other runs tape machine.”

Me: “Are you F&$KING kidding me?”

Simon: “No. Is in NABET rules book. Section 22, para—”

Me: “What does the microphone adjuster do while the other person is running the tape machine?”

Simon: “Fills out timecards for session.”

Me: “Okay, fine.”

Simon: “Send me FAX, two copies of session script, name of actor on AFTRA contract, AFTRA contract in triplicate, radio and TV buy, and name of good place to buy miniature television set.”

Me: “What?”

Simon: “Kids want TV for car. It runs off cigarette lighter input. Very clever. I—”

I made up the part about the 27 course lunch. Might have only been 22.

KQED’s staff of producers, as befits the personality of a bunch of touchy-feely Marin County types, had zero interest in actually lodging consistent complaints about NABET. As such, when any of the production people complained to me in Unit Managers, I requested that a discussion with scheduling and the shop steward might be in order.

No one ever wanted to do that. In time, and long after I left, the union, the feckless producers, and their helpmates in top-heavy management cratered the station’s General Ledger and led to even less effective local programming and even fewer documentaries for which the station could claim credit. That trend continues to this day.

But by golly, trotting Bill Moyers, or some clone thereof, out to slam conservatives, and binge-running(No one binge watches PBS, except for Downton Abbey) alternative lifestyle short films, satisfies the sanctimonious and the self-proclaimed superior types.

And I ain’t talking about the viewership.

Can’t properly say farewell to this section without a few words on Pledge, the scourge of anything worthwhile to watch on PBS. It is the interrupter of any rhythm and appreciation of public television. If Pledge could be taken outside and shot, I’d be breach loading the shotgun and walking into my backyard to do it.

Pledge runs about 52 weeks out of the year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Or, perhaps it just feels that way. During whatever air time is left, the local affiliate or national feed consists of worthwhile educational programs and family oriented fare that crosses all borders of gender, faith, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Hah!

And, as much as I’d like to post a typical Pledge Pitch, I haven’t taken nearly enough Xanax in my life to pull myself out of the pit of despair into which I would plummet. I don’t think I can bring myself to recount the dialogue from the usual tag team combination of the effeminate Castrati and the cloyingly solicitous Manhattanite doyenne trying their level best to separate us from $50 for a copy of The Mario Lanza Diet Book.

I am moving on from PBS. You should too. I realize there is a dearthof educational, activity, and alternative viewing stations out there such as The Discovery Channel, NatGeo, Hallmark,

SCI, The History Channel, Ovation, Animal Planet, NASA TV, C-SPAN (Cough), The Travel Channel, The Golf Channel, NFL Network, MLB, NHL, and the various international feeds from other countries that any basic cable package will provide.

And there’s just so darned little On-Demand and on PPV that making a $50 donation to the elites seems like a fair trade. That and the Gazillion Dollars sent to those losers every year, some of which is hoovered out of your taxes, whether anyone at the CPB will confess to it or not.

Yes, the American public should just keep falling for the “Could you really take Sesame Street away from your children.?” Or as the sanctimonious PBS Pledge hosts would put it, “Can you allow the blood-thirsty, evil Republicans to take away the only access to fine, commercial-free programming poor little children of minority parents have? Can you? To those same programs also available to the spoiled-rotten, glow-in-the-dark, pale and washed out spawn of Satan? Can you?”

And now back to the private sector.

WARNING! this contains quite a few possible triggers! please do not read if you are sensitive or queasy. otherwise, please proceed & thank you for taking the time to give this a read! this story takes place in incheon, south korea during january of 2005.

❛ hey, hunter. ❜

a petite frame stirs almost immediately, though the movement is barely detectable beneath the aggregation of thick blankets - what is his illusion of a temporary safe haven. the pale lighting spilling into the tiny bedroom implies that the metamorphosis between night and morning has already taken place, and as hunter's eyes finally open, his bedroom window displays the telltale image of dark, nebulous cobalt graduating to the soft steely gray of early morning. without so much as glancing toward his alarm clock ( which in this state of mind, would appear as nothing more than thick, red blocks with a colon in between, ) he already knows of the hour - for sang-in has consistently woken him up just after 6am for the past five days. hunter hasn't thought to ask of this new habit, and he doesn't complain, either.

at first, he'd been annoyed at the lack of rest this unspoken schedule imposes on him - nights at the club are unpredictable and can last anywhere from 2am to 4am. but, hunter realizes that he must be at his day job by 8am, anyway - and usually only finds a few hours in between to rest before heading straight to his evening job. waking up this early gives him time to collect himself and mentally prepare for the day ahead - though he's never been a morning person at all, he's willing to make the sacrifice for sang-in.

he makes a lot of sacrifices for sang-in.

❛ i know, i know ... ❜ the seventeen year old mumbles in delayed response, a closed fist raising from beneath the blankets to rub the fatigue from his eyes. all that can be seen from his self-constructed chrysalis is just above his jaw, and as he sleeps facing the wall, sang-in's only view of the boy is a wild tuft of pink hair.

hunter shifts unceremoniously, reluctantly throwing his covers up and out of the way so he can crawl down from his bed. he and sang-in used to share this room, roughly a year ago - but it became evident that the much older male could not handle being in the same room as hunter. many awkward, uncomfortable instances passed before the younger male took the initiative to force his roommate to sleep on the couch … a measure he hadn't wanted to take, but he grew rather tired of having to slap away wandering hands or move himself to another room when the elder's advances became too much.

but he can't be mad at sang-in. he needs help - and at this point in time, hunter is the only help available to him.

❛ do you want any breakfast? it's nothing fancy, but there's some eggs and bacon downstairs. it's still hot. ❜

sleepy, golden eyes look toward his roommate in surprise. usually, hunter would do all the cooking and keeping house - atop of working two jobs and trying to complete his high school education in the summer. but it's january now, so he doesn't have to concern about that. it's his final year, anyway - by september of this year, he'll graduate. ❛ you cooked?❜ he asks the obvious, though out of utter disbelief, ❛ sang, y'didn't have to. ya'no i don't mind ...❜

❛ you do everything around here,❜ sang-in sighs, placing his hand delicately atop hunter's bare thigh. the younger flinches at the touch, swatting the hand away immediately. he's let him do that too many times. it's lead to things he'd rather not relive.

❛ i gotta,❜ hunter reminds him, climbing down the wooden ladder to the floor, hugging his arms around his bare chest, ❛ you got fired, an' no one's gonna hire you until you get clean. it's a lotta work, yeah, but i do it 'cause i know i have to. ❜

sang-in sighs, slipping his hands into the pockets of his sleep pants. hunter is right – he's a 35 year old addict, no college education, barely scraped by in high school … he won't admit it to himself, but he's using this softhearted boy to keep him alive. he manipulates him - the only thing hunter is unwilling to give him is sex, but he knows why. sang-in is the one who recommended him to that club, the reason he has that job in every way … he's torn down this child's future to spare whatever is left of his own. the least he could do is make him some goddamn breakfast.

❛ i'm headin' out,❜ sang-in finally says after a silent moment, bloodshot eyes glancing at hunter as the older man starts to scratch at his neck, ❛ got anything for me ?❜

hunter nods, and sang-in knew he would. he watches that lithe form climb back up to the top bunk, and the high shelves where a few of hunter's necessities lay neatly arranged to prevent them from falling or being lost. he grasps a black book, a latin cross imprinted on the front cover. opening it, he retrieves two hundred fifty thousand won and crawls to the edge of the bunk, placing it in the other's outstretched hand. ❛ please make this last the week. it's all i can afford to give you - i still have to pay the electric bill, an' buy us some fuckin' food. ❜

sang-in nods in comprehension. hunter knows he'll be asking again by wednesday.

he crawls down again, listening as sang-in shuffles through the apartment, and slams the front door behind him.

time to get ready for the day.

the pink-haired boy rushes around the corner, knowing he'll be late if he so much as stops to breathe. he'd fallen asleep upon coming home from his shift at the coffee shop, and he'd been so tired that he'd slept through both of his alarms. he hadn't even had time to find his counterfeit id, whatever coat pocket he'd left it in - but hardly ever does he need to use it. his boss takes care of everything for him.

he stumbles in through the back door, every lost breath caught in his throat as he finally takes a moment to stop and collect himself. minhyuk and nikyong, the bouncers, collectively raise an eyebrow as he practically flings himself in after unlocking the door.

❛ hey, kid - you alright ? you look even more shook up than usual,❜ nikyong remarks, approaching hunter and studying his weary countenance.

❛ i'm fine,❜ hunter says too quickly, starting to remove is jacket and hang it on an unoccupied hook. the neon blacklights of the club's backstage bathe his skin a bright pink hue, more intense than his hair. another setback had been the time it had taken to get his roots bleached and colored, for if his boss so much as saw a trace of his natural color showing through, there would be hell to pay. he has an image to uphold, an image that brings in MONEY. hunter wheezes out the second part of his reply, clearing his throat to appear more stable after running five blocks without a break, ❛ i was just runnin' a lil' late, 's all. ❜

minhyuk breathes a worried sigh, ❛ be careful, kid. you still lookin' for another job ? ❜

❛ i haven't found anythin', ❜ hunter comments, running anxious hands through his hair, ❛ no one needs some seventeen year old kid on deck. i was lucky enough to get this one ... ❜ LUCKY is an interesting choice of word for this circumstance … but the single thought of sang-in pushes him forward. ❛ i have someone i needa take care of. look, guys, i gotta get ready to go onstage. i'll catch up with you over a cigarette or somethin'.❜

with that, the youngblood slides into his shared dressing room, finding that sweetae was already there, applying the last of her makeup. she glaces at him and smiles, an oddly warm smile for a woman as sad as she.

❛ hey, attilayah - i was starting to think something happened to you,❜ she murmurs, voice soft as she spins in the vanity chair, ❛ you're never late. ❜

❛ it's a long ass story,❜ hunter sighs, shifting positions with the older woman as she stands and he takes the seat on the cushioned stool. without question, she starts to brush his hair back to help him with his face.

❛ well, i'm glad you're here. the other girls and i would have been mighty lonely without you. ❜

hunter often forgets that he is the only boy on staff - yet somehow, the main event every night. men and women alike came to see him dance, hoped to get a private session with him - but the club's owner never allowed hunter to do private sessions, for fear that his real age may become apparent upon closer inspection. and always was hunter grateful for that … but since he'd undergone those PROCEDURES to look older, his employer seemed to be more lenient with a lot of policies. hopefully, he wouldn't bend on this rule.

❛ have ya seen eunbin today ?❜ he speaks his boss's name like a plague, and sweetae only shakes her head.

❛ no, but he's here. i saw his car when i came in. i don't know what the hell he's doing but, i'm not all that concerned about it. ❜

no one really was.

by the time makeup and costuming work had been complete, hunter was hardly recognizable. bright yellow and hot pink makeup decorated his eyes, as well as bright silver rhinestones and thick, black liner. his lips were painted a petal pink and adorned in red gloss, and long, bulky lashes extended from either of his eyes. his hair had been flat ironed and styled so that one eye is partially shrouded behind the flirty pink tresses, and a gold, ornately designed ring had been pierced into his septum, replacing the standard silver one he'd come in with. his outfit was no more than a cluster of jewels and fishnets, though hardly did it matter, for everything but the shoes and thong would be removed by the end of his dance.

long, slender legs balance seemingly effortlessly on the monstrous heels he's been given, as he's been working here nearly a year, he's gotten used to moving and dancing in such RIDICULOUS shoes. his build is slim and toned, though a bit too thin in some places, due to his lack of eating. but it isn't as though it mattered, nor anyone cared - so long as he had a nice ass and was pretty to look at, he'd have enough money to make it through the next few months. he's talked of finding another job to replace this one, but, no options have been made apparent. as uncomfortable and anxious as being a stripper makes him, as long as he can hide it before the stage lights go out, he'll be successful.

❛ yeo ! ❜

that strict voice startles him to the point where he nearly drops the earring he'd been trying to put in. golden hues lock on the aged, familiar face - an entire dimension of discomfort passing through his body, all at once. most referred to him by his stripper name between the wall of this godforsaken establishment, but one man never did.

kwon eunbin, his boss.

❛ i heard you were late today,❜ his beady eyes pierce through the young man's soul – but hunter is far from afraid of him. though the man makes him extremely uncomfortable, he prides himself on the fact that he's perhaps the only dancer here who isn't scared of this soulless demon – though in unison with the rest of the cast, he depends on him. he must show him respect, or he'll be out a job that he knows he NEEDS. ❛ thought you could just slip in under my nose, did you ?❜

❛ i'm sorry, sir, ❜ hunter mumbles, though he does not break eye contact. his fists are clenched, as is his jaw - though his shoulders are relatively relaxed, for such tension as he feels. ❛ it won't happen again. ❜

❛ you're damned right, it won't,❜ the man of middle age echoes, ❛ if it does, you and i will have to have a lil' CHAT. time is money. don't fuck with either of those. ❜

❛ yes, sajangnim. ❜ he can feel the other dancers' eyes on him - the fury burning for eunbin enough to scourge the back of his neck, ❛ i won't be late again. you have my word. ❜

❛ now, before i let you go out, there's an executive decision that i've made. ❜

hunter swallows thick in his throat. his eyes stare blankly ahead, lips pursing as he absolutely HATES when eunbin says that - for it usually translates to the fact he's made some selfish decision that will negatively impact the masses of his employees. he hardly thinks of them as more than whorish pawns that he can play to his profit … and while it's wrong, no one can stop him. if they do, they'll starve.

❛ since you've gone through with the surgery, and you look SO MUCH BETTER, might i add, ❜ which translates to SO MUCH OLDER, which is just what eunbin had wanted in FORCING hunter to undergo the cosmetic procedures he had, ❛ i feel much safer letting you do private sessions. we'll say … one to two a night ? i'll let you decide on that one. i feel generous enough,❜

hunter's shoulders tighten, then. his eyes fill with anger, averting to gaze at the wall to his right rather that have to see that EVIL face he HATES so much.

❛ so long as you're doing at least one a night, the club will benefit. and so will YOU,❜ he extends his hand and tightly grasps hunter's jaw -still sore and healing from the reshaping it had undergone. what results is a HISS, and hunter almost bares his teeth in result to the unwelcomed touch - but by the last minute, he'd managed enough hold on his composure not to make such a dire mistake.

❛ yes … sajangnim. ❜

❛ good,❜ eunbin maliciously coos, finally removing his hand from that PRETTY, PRETTY face, ❛ now, it seems as though it's about that time. ladies, prep the stage for yeo. he's got a big night tonight. ❜ again, he turns to the youngblood, a falsely sweet smile placed across his chapped lips, ❛ and, don't look so sad. it's not sexy. ❜

that seductive facade employed, the crowed simply devoured him, as per usual. down to the very last bit of clothing, which he teased halfway down his hips before giving a wink to a very lucky lady and sauntering offstage - he couldn't miss a beat. he was burning fire, he was everything they came to see and more. and he HATED every second of it.

admittedly, though, not EVERY second. there was something exhilarating about the way the crowd screamed his name ( the throwing of money was a little degrading, but, nonetheless he needs it,) the way they so openly and unabashedly adored him. even if it was just for his body, he could pretend like it wasn't.

the short trek from the safety of his onstage illusion to the hellish reality that awaits him behind a thick, black curtain certainly isn't long enough for him to get his thoughts together. all he's wearing at this point are, as promised, skimpy lace underwear and 7 inch heels, with pink and blue flashing lights embedded in the soles. a biting chill runs down his spine as he doesn't even have the time to visit his dressing room before he's bombarded by eunbin, and a man that looks to be about his age.

immediately, hunter slips his stage mask back on - expression going from a deer in headlights to some mythical creature that elicited seduction with its every move. lids hang low over his eyes and golden eyes peer through thick lashes - that mixture of sin and innocence his trademark, the very aspect that puts him at center stage every night.

eunbin appears pleased with this shift, as does the suited stranger. ❛ ATTILA, ❜ begins the club's owner, ❛ this is the man who paid MOST GENEROUSLY for your company tonight. ❜

hunter only takes a moment to study the look of the salt-and-pepper haired man - dressed in a tom ford suit and expensive looking shoes. what odd attire to come to a strip club in, but he doesn't particularly care about his character - as he's CERTAIN such sentiments are reciprocated. he just wants to get this over with.

❛ well, it's nice t' meet you,❜ he says in a honeyed voice, low and fluctuating in tones for a harmonious effect. his lashes flutter invitingly despite the fact that he wants to vomit. ❛ i'm flattered you'd put up so much money just for me. makes me feel real …❜ SICK, ❛ special. ❜

hunter can tell the man is looking his body up and down like a piece of meat. but how else would such a lustful character regard something made for nothing more than his pleasures ? hunter would much rather do this with a woman - it may be an unnecessary bias, but he feels as though a female would be less likely to tear him apart like this man looks to be a SHARK in a fancy suit. the wolf exhales shakily, almost breaking character - though under eunbin's scrutiny, he manages to play it off as a playfully flirty sigh.

despite his gorgeous ensemble, and the ferarri car keys jingling in his hand … something about this man is UGLY. aside from the lone fact that he must be old enough to be hunter's father.

❛ you are special, JAGIYA.❜ that sickeningly sweet tone goes right to hunter's stomach, and though he responds with a rehearsed giggle, the urge to tear out this man's throat steadily rises in him. though he's promised to himself he'd never kill a human unless they REALLY DESERVE IT … and all this man is guilty of is being a pawn to societal lust. ❛ now, come with me. we've wasted enough time standing here, right ? ❜

NO, hunter wants to say. but he gives a charming eye-smile and takes the man's hand, swallowing down the urge to scream. hopefully minhyuk and nikyong would look out for him in case hunter's previous assessment of this nameless man proves to be true, and he gets some BRIGHT IDEAS in favor of not following the rules of a private session. the most emboldened of these regulations also the most violated: NO TOUCHING. hunter could not count how many times the cast would complain about wandering hands - maybe he'll get lucky, though. maybe this man knows better.

wrong.

as soon as the door closes behind them, hunter making to pivot sensually and use the mirror on the back of the threshold to his advantage, he's met with a very unpleasant look in the other man's eye. pure CARNAGE, and as a wolf, he can recognize it. but no - that glower is all human. all despicably human.

but he hasn't touched him. that's a good sign - so hunter keeps going. ❛ now, OPPA, what 's it that you want, hm ~? ❜ he bites back the urge to call him AJUSSHI, hiding his scorn behind that pretty smile and hypnotic body. his skin is milky and soft-looking, even the protrusions of his hip- and collarbones look like gentle, pretty slopes. it's amazing how good of an actor he can be in this instance - in actually, all he's WILLING to do is maybe spit on this man.

but sang-in needs him.

❛ you're so pretty. ❜ the man says, drawing closer. to avoid being backed against the door, hunter shifts his back and increases his proximity to the loveseat in the corner of the private room. this doesn't stop the nameless man, however, and in defiance of his feral instincts - for the SAKE of both himself and this human before him, he swallows down every urge he gets to defend himself against a larger predator. wolves are aggressive and relentless when threatened, and though hunter's blood has come to boil, he tries to keep up his act to distract himself. his smile never falters.

❛ sit down, oppa. ❜ hunter entices,❛ and i'll show ya just how pretty i am. ❜

the man does what is instructed of him, and hunter coordinates in his brain exactly how he will do this to preserve the fraying ropes of his sanity, keeping him from breaking. he doesn't have a lot of time, so he moves quickly, raising one of his legs onto the cushion of the loveseat, boxing his one-man audience in with his body. he makes an effort not to make any contact with him, however - aside from that flirtatious stare.

❛ you have such nice clothes …❜ hunter coos, licking his lips faux-innocently, ❛ i would hate to mess them up. ❜

❛ don't worry about that, ❜ the man releases him of any worry he may have had about that, though hunter hardly even hears what he says,❛ there's plenty more just like them. ❜

how did a rich man stumble into THIS part of incheon ? hunter muses, he must have some sort of business here … some career stepping on the heads of the poor to markup his own value. again, that sickness in his stomach makes itself known, but every time it worsens, he just smiles more. ❛ that so ? ❜

hunter gets tired of talking to him, and the man must have seen no value in this exchange, either, for he seems more focused on the way hunter's body moves. what a predictable and simple-minded person. biting back his disgust, hunter grinds down onto him - doing as best he could to ignore the erection prodding him - what a PIG, and oh, how the wolf wishes to devour him … in a way far different from how the older man must be envisioning himself doing to hunter.

though it isn't long after such a hostility is conceived that the wolf feels a tight GRIP at his hips, pushing him further down into the man's lap.

NO.

❛ let go. ❜ hunter doesn't hesitate to command, trying to slap the hands away and dropping his act almost instantaneously. the man does not let him go, however, and hunter nearly GROWLS as he orders him again. ❛ i said LET GO. you aren't allowed to touch me. ❜

❛ calm down, jagiya, ❜ panic is rising at the same rate as anger in hunter's blood, the use of that pet name causing him to nearly snap then and there. ❛ i just want to make this more FUN, for the both of us. ❜

❛ then try a prostitute, ❜ hunter says coldly, his disgust now EVIDENT. ❛ i'm not a whore. you can't buy me that way. take your fuckin' hands off me. ❜ he starts to raise his voice, hoping that either nikyong or minhyuk will hear him and come to his aid. he looks toward the door. nothing.

his jaw is grasped for the second time today, and he's forced to look into those UGLY eyes. it reminds him of something he's seen before, but his recollection is hazy. but just that glare makes the scars down his lower back tingle - his body remembering what his mind cannot. withholding his true strength, he tries one final time.

❛ let. go. ❜

❛ i don't think so, honey. stop acting like this isn't something you want - or keep it up, rather. i like it. ❜

violently, hunter smacks his hand away from his face and tries to squirm out of the iron grip digging into his hip –where he's certain bruises are forming now. he gets halfway off the man's lap before his thighs are grasped and he's pulled back, hunter's face now locked with AGGRESSION as their eyes again meet. the man reaches to pull down his underwear, and that is the final straw. hunter's hold breaks, and he raises a clawed hand, striking the man across the face.

it happens so quickly; blood stains the floor in a crimson flash, hunter able to HEAR the massive droplets hitting the floor and creating thick pools. the man cries out, his left eye socket POURING BLOOD as its rightful eye is loose from the thin veins connecting it to his brain. hunter jumps off of him, losing his footing as his legs give out and he falls onto the bloodstained floor, his clawed hand soaked in the man's sanguine, and thin patches of torn flesh.

claw marks from his middle, index, and ring finger are glittering red, the imprints deep into the man's aged flesh as he shouts again, swearing out of utter PAIN. he's still bleeding - blood is everywhere. the couch, the floor, all over both of them - hunter comes to his senses all at once and realizes what he's just done. his eyes widen and his whole body quivers … the man is still alive, but for how long ?

at least he said not to worry about the suit.

the essence of imperfect timing, minhyuk and nikyong burst into the room, the door nearly flying off its hinges. ❛ KID, are you okay ? we heard screaming - ❜ minhyuk stops mid-sentence as he takes in the scene. nikyong covers his mouth.

hunter looks at both of them, eyes as wide as they possibly could be, 'twas a wonder how they did not simply roll out of their sockets. no one says anything, the man's cries of agony are enough sound to fill the room. the victim looks up, left eye disconnected completely from the nerve adhering it to his brain, socket completely void of anything but the blood spurting out of it. his face is utterly destroyed, his mouth torn and the bone of his nose exposed by the ripped flesh.

❛ what the FUCK happened here -? ❜

the next hunter realizes that he is alive, that his conscious is working and that he, indeed, witnesses his own existence - he is wrapped in a blanket, nikyong and minhyuk, as well as most of the cast crowded around him. eunbin is pacing, and when he notices that hunter is awake, he all but SNAPS.

❛ you little ANIMAL, ❜ he shouts, startling nearly everyone in the room. the two bouncers are on either side of him, seemingly protectively, and hunter nearly falls from his seat, the sudden shout startles him so.

❛ sajangnim, please - ❜ sweetae speaks up, her tiny voice nothing compared to the way eunbin's bellows throughout the room, ❛ attilayah was just trying to defend himself - the man broke the rules, and was trying to hurt him - ❜

❛ RAPE HIM, from what i saw, ❜ nikyong cuts in, preventing the owner from yelling at the one who'd spoken up, as he looked like he was about to, ❛ the kid's underwear were down below his ass, and he was covered in bruises. cut him some slack - he did what he had to do. ❜

hunter cannot find words to speak toward his own defense, so he is grateful that the other employees do it for him. eunbin, however, stares knives into the boy's eyes - and even through this state, hunter does not back down from him.

❛ that guy died on OUR property. how are we going to explain this to the police ? to anyone ? we'll get shut down for sure. i'll go broke. ❜

no one seems to be surprised that all eunbin can think about is money, despite all that's happened. hunter finally finds the strength to say something, though the scene plays over and over again in his mind - though he's been cleaned and taken care of, he can still feel that ripping flesh beneath his now-retracted nails. thankfully, no one seems to outwardly question just HOW he's clawed half a man's face off … though it seems as though he bled to death. ❛ i'll … i'll plead self defense. that'll get you off the hook, won't it ? ❜

❛ YEO, no matter how GORGEOUS that skimpy lil' body of yours is, people aren't gonna come to a club where some guy was KILLED. we have no choice. we have to hide the body. unless you all want to be out of a job, it's the only choice we got. he'll go missing for a while, but no one's even gonna remember him in a few months. it'll be fine. we'll be okay. ❜

hunter sits where he is, frozen, as everyone else rushes to complete the task. some horror is present in all of their eyes, but desperate times do call for equally DESPERATE measures.

❛ kid, you go home. ❜ nikyong says, just as he's about to leave the room. ❛ you been through enough tonight. go get some rest. ❜ and without another word, he's gone.

hunter closes his eyes, though briefly opens them to try to decipher the face of the clock on the wall. 4.30am. he'd better get home.

Summary: Blaine decides to take Marley home for a shower and food, and leaves Brody in charge of babysitting Sebastian in the hospital-- away from the waiting room.

Headcanon Part Three (End) of Three

This is hardly the time, but the hum is a familiar noise, a familiar feel; and it definitely causes Brody to inhale sharply, eyes fluttering as his body reacts. Not that he's turned on, exactly (thank god because this is not a sexy version of Bas and that would be weird), but the sound triggers a sort of tension release, as his muscles remember all the times post-orgasm, when he and Sebastian would just be lazing, just idling along the skin. It brings a sort of ease to his body, and his mind just kind of follows as he releases his breath in a quiet sigh. He can't help but laugh a little at Bas' request. "Trust me, Bas-- you don't want me playing doctor." He held up his hand, showing off the jagged, messy-looking scar left along his thumb. Even as old as it was, you could tell it hadn't really been taken care of properly at first. "This is my version of playing doctor: a fishing hook and some rubbing alcohol. You really want to risk it?" It wasn't really true-- Brody probably was a pretty decent caretaker under regular, non-dying circumstances, and the kind of doctor Bas wanted he could be //especially// good at-- but he shouldn't be encouraging that sort of this with Sebastian of all people. "But I've got to say I'm kind of disappointed. We bring in hot patients, and they can't be bothered to reciprocate with staff? I feel like we should file a complaint-- or write a note for the suggestion box at the very least." He rolled his eyes, squeezing the other's shoulder. "Yeah; I'm not rewarding you for ending up in the hospital with a strip show. Plus, who would help me get the damned things off? I don't have blondes just sitting in my back pocket on short notice, you know, and //you// can't get out of bed." God that conversation was //so// long ago, and maybe not appropriate in the present situation, but it just felt //really// good to be joking about stupid shit again. Like the last month hadn't even happened really.

The sigh that escapes Brody definitely has a soothing effect on Sebastian. Really, considering how their relationship has been up until this point, this should feel uncomfortable. Maybe it's the fatigue, the near-death experience, or maybe it's the fact that he hasn't interacted positively with Brody all month, but either way, so long as the other doesn't get uncomfortable with it, he's far too settled to want to move. His eyes find the scar that Brody holds up for him to view, and he raises his hand to thumb over it gently, surveying the jagged mess. "Yeah, well, thankfully my misfortune hasn't resulted in an open wound," he says almost softly. He supposes he can chalk it down to his tiredness. He's sick - he has every right to blame any sign of weakness on it, alright? He drops his hand, but it comes to rest over Brody's abs. Not entirely unpleasant, either. Again - sick. Can't be held accountable for this. "Not that I don't think you make an excellent point, but I'm not sure there even /is/ a suggestion box," he replies with a quiet laugh. "Or if there is, they've kept it hidden from me. Seems like my reputation extends further than I thought." Not that he'd be entirely surprised to run into someone that he's slept with in this place - although it's not like he's been paying attention, or able to move from his bed. The squeeze on his shoulder has his muscles relaxing under the brief touch. "Then I guess you'd just have to hold the audience all on your own, Brodes. Don't worry - I, as your audience, have faith in you."

For a minute, Brody just listens to Bas breathing-- it's not really healthy, obviously, but it's a much better sound than what was going on a few hours ago. He's never been so grateful to just hear someone breathe. He imagines what it must have been like for Marley, back in the beginning of the night, waiting for his breathing to even out-- she must think he's such a coward. Good-- maybe then these two will stop being so stupid. Although the idea of falling out of their lives hurts honestly, and so Brody just goes back to the nothing thoughts that involve the feel of Bas against his chest, his own rising and falling weakly, but consistent. That was probably a stupid move, Brody realizes as Bas trails his fingers along the raised tissue and a shiver goes up his spine. He can't help but consider the unintentional metaphor Bas managed to slide in there-- god, the three of them were really ripping each other apart, weren't they? If Brody just had stayed away... He twists his wrist slightly, his thumb moving to overlap the other's hand and rest along his knuckles, squeezing gently as he shoots him a smirk. "Good point, although if that's how I do with a scratch, do you really want to think about how I'll manage an invalid?" he ribs gently. He lets Bas loose, although his muscles tense infinitesimally under his touch before relaxing. It wasn't anything-- he was just sick. And Brody was just keeping him warm, with his arm wrapped up around him, pulling him against his thermal (because Brody isn't an idiot who goes out in the middle of the night //shirtless//). Brody scoffs quietly, keeping his voice low, "No suggestion box? Travesty. Maybe we should suggest one. Although the latter could be true-- nobody wants a pompous peacock stuffing the box with dumb suggestions about poisoning the patients with crappy French wine."He chuckles again. "Well, as a businessman, I think I'd be worried at this point about killing my audience with overstimulation, so you'll just have to wait until you can breathe properly for us to broach the subject again." Brody's fingers trail lightly against his skin. "Maybe get some sleep."

Brody's hand resting over his takes him by surprise, but he lets out a breath, anyway, just happy to have the comfort right now. This whole ordeal has been particularly shitty - he /needs/ this right now. Some sort of warmth to make him stop thinking about all the shit going on inside his head. Part of him wants to twist his hand and wrap it around Brody's, but even he feels like that'd be too much right now. Wouldn't want Brody to get the wrong idea. He's drawing a blank on what exactly that is right now, but he can hardly be blamed. His brain is mush. He still manages to roll his eyes at Brody's statement, following it up with a scoff. "All I was looking for was a sponge bath, Brodes. I'm sure you're capable of that without permanently damaging me." He snorts, tired eyes flickering up to meet Brody's. "How are we supposed to suggest one without a suggestion box, genius?" he teases. "No, no - it's not my fault that the only wine that you've tried in your life is the shitty cheap stuff. Clearly you've never had /real/ French wine in your life, or you wouldn't have such a boner for your fake Californian shit." He huffs. "But I'm sick. Shouldn't I be able to use that to my advantage to get what I want? Almost cruel to deny me." His breath shakes as Brody's fingers skim over him. He doesn't /want/ to sleep. If he sleeps, he'll wake up and Brody won't be there. Not that it should bother him. It doesn't, really. He's fine. But their friendship had been in tatters over the past month. Could anyone blame him for wanting to hold on a little longer? "Not tired," he lied, although the croak in his voice betrayed him.

Brody lets out an amused laugh, trying not to shake the bed at Sebastian's response. "A sponge bath? Me? My version of cleaning people up is lining them up against the wall and spraying them down with a hose." His thumb is idling back and forth along Bas' knuckles on the hand that is now resting on his chest. He should probably let go-- a) it's diseased, and 2) if the guy starts coughing again, he'll need to be able to move. But...well, he's doing okay right now, and Brody's not holding on //tight// or anything, and...well, if the only one here to realize that he's screwing up again is too out of it to notice, it's kind of okay, right? It's not like it means anything to Sebastian. Brody grins and throws a wink. "You're the pretty one-- shouldn't you be able to just, you know, ask or something? I figured that was how things worked for you: or is it since you can't bend over for people anymore you've lost your superpowers? Did we find your Kryptonite, Bas?" The name feels good on his tongue-- familiar, comfortable. He'd been trying so hard to use Sebastian for so long, and he would again no doubt, but for now it was nice to fall back on old habits. "Shitty, cheap stuff? Your kind wouldn't know how to harvest a rhone properly if it stood up and told you. California is called the Golden State for a reason-- because we don't need to //pretend// to be the best and upcharge for crap product to make people think we're classy. The product speaks for itself."

"I think that only works when you're seven and want soup. Otherwise you're stuck with what's 'good' for you." Brody couldn't help it-- his evil smirk grew wide. "Bas, I'm only a little sorry to break this one to you, but you're probably going to be denied for a while." He laughs-- it's mean, but it's so freaking true and funny. "Seriously, what's the longest dry spell you've ever had? Because I might confer with Blaine to make a pool and see when you crack." The funny stops when Sebastian's breathing sputters a little, and Brody stiffens as he shifts, trying to get a better look. But Bas just insists in his exhausted tone, that he's not tired, and Brody allows himself to relax, eyes rolling slightly. "Well, maybe you can try a little." Brody thinks he should offer to move-- to get off the bed completely. That way Bas can find a position that is comfortable, at least. But when he forms the words, his chest tightens, and he-- he just can't. Marley's right: he cares. He wishes he didn't, because this is Sebastian Smythe, and him caring about //Marley// was a huge deal for him. And Brody's not going to ask Bas to choose him over her-- that doesn't even make sense. So instead he's making things more complicated by lying in bed with a guy he can't have, that's in love with a girl he can't have either. Two thumbs up, Brody. "Okay, so besides chaps, what could we do to help tire you out? I'm guessing counting sheep is off the list." Yes, he purposely dropped that innuendo in there-- shut up. He's just gauging how close he is to sleeping, that's all. A coherent Bas wouldn't pass it up, but if he's gone, he won't notice, right?

"Probably not the best idea in my condition, Brodes. I think your only choice is a sponge bath," he reminds the older man with a suggestive smirk. "However, I'm not against the idea of being thrown against a wall by you." As weird as things have been between them, Sebastian can't help but be relieved about the fact that it's so easy to just flirt and tease right now. Granted, he'd made some innuendos at the older man in their texts the previous few nights, but those were mixed in with anger-fuelled words, so they don't really count, do they? Brody's hand skims across his knuckles and Sebastian's heart flutters in a concerning way, which he chooses to chalk down to his fatigue. He returns Brody's grin in kind, not at all helped by Brody's use of the nickname. "Please. I still have this face, and my charm. I suppose I can flirt my way into getting what I want." He's certainly done it plenty of times before. Rolling his eyes, he scoffs at Brody's insistence regarding his inferior wine. "Please. Your wine tastes like urine. But, hey, if that's what you're into - far be it from me to kink shame. I guess it'll just have to go alongside your weird Furry thing. Not my thing, but you do you."

"Well then, what's the point?" he huffs. Still, Brody's next point is a stinger, and his smirk falls a little bit, because - well, shit. "Screw you. And I mean that literally," he grumbles, not really being able to come up with much better. He rolls his eyes as Brody laughs at his misfortune "I don't do dry spells." Which is true - although he's not entirely sure he has any control over this one. He hums quietly in protest over Brody's suggestion, although he's not entirely sure how much longer he can keep himself awake for. He just... wants this. Which he knows he shouldn't. It's... confusing. He needs to not think about it, except that something in the back of his mind is niggling at him and it's getting harder and harder to shut it out. Thankfully, Brody provides him something else to concentrate on, and his lips twitch weakly. "Mm, I can think of a few things. Now that you've brought up the whole 'dry spell' thing, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to sleep at all." He chuckles in anticipation for his own follow-up, because fuck you, he's hilarious. "Care to lend a /hand/?"

“Well, if that’s my //only// choice…” Brody’s voice is low with a hint of a tease. Which becomes more pronounced when he finishes, “I guess I’ll just have to let you die. Rough luck there.” He shakes his head. “I never said anything about throwing you against a wall, and considering you can’t even stand, I doubt it’s in your range of abilities anyways.” Not that Brody hasn’t managed to keep Bas steady against a wall without the other carrying any of his bony-ass weight, but that is definitely not the point of this conversation. “Your face that looks like death warmed over, and your charm, that’s slightly hindered by your inability to go five minutes without coughing up a lung? Yeah, I think you might be in trouble, Peacock.” He quirks an eyebrow. “And you’re familiar with the taste of piss because…? Why do you keep pushing all of your weird fetishes on me, Bas? I mean, I’m trying not to judge, but I do have my limits.” He chuckles softly, sighing in amusement at the younger’s grumbling. “I don’t know-- some nonsense about getting healthy and whatnot, I guess? Not having permanent lung damage, which I’m //pretty sure// would long term affect the quality of your sex life?” His laugh starts growing louder, and soon he’s trying really hard not to fall off balance. “No, see, I don’t count either Bas-- that’s the point. Oh my god, this is classic-- like a Greek tragedy. Oh god.” He should stop laughing-- it’s mean, and Bas is sick. But it’s so damned funny. He tries to get a grip on himself, biting hard on his lip that does nothing to conceal his wide grin. “Well, I guess this will be a whole new experience in restaint for you, huh? If it makes you feel better, I don’t even think you can get it up when you break a certain temperature.”

He hugs Bas close to him in a sympathetic gesture, although it may be diminished by how hilarious he finds the whole thing. It’s probably the first funny thing that’s happened in the last over-twenty four hours, and his body is taking it a little far. But he manages to quiet himself, because he’s trying to get Sebastian to relax. The quirk in Bas’ expression is more than enough to tell Brody that the man is aware of Brody’s phrasing, and his face breaks into a soft smile even as he lets out a scoff. Because he now knows where Bas is in terms to sleeping, is all. He shakes his head and shifts a little, moving them both a little ways closer to the mattress. Not that Brody’s really tired, but it should help Bas sleep-- and then Brody can go as soon as the others come back. “Your jokes still suck,” he breathes, blinking lazily and breathing in deeply (no, that is a sigh, not a yawn- he’s fine). “At least you can blame the infection this time.” His free hand shifts away from Bas’ shoulder, carding lightly through his hair. “God, what would NPH think of this,” he mumbles, head a little fuzzy. “Total waste of a trip to Lima, all because you’d rather linger in a hospital bed than get some rest and get the hell out of here and make a sex tape with him and David? What the hell am I supposed to watch at Cinema Stix now? Just plain selfish, Bas…”

The tone of the first part of Brody's sentence makes Sebastian's lips twitch, ready to hit back with more suggestions, but the end of his sentence has him scoffing. "Well then don't go crying to anyone when you're the first person I come back to haunt. You only have yourself to blame. If you think I'm an asshole now, just imagine me as a vengeful spirit." He manages to grab hold of the reigns again, though, smirk falling back in place. "Yeah, but, you know, I have faith that you can hold me up." And, fuck - /that's/ a visual image he's not going to get out of his head any time soon. Damn. "And yet I still look better than anyone else in this place - the staff included. You said it yourself - /slightly/ hindered. I can work around it." Rolling his eyes, he scoffs. "It's an expression, asshole. Besides, I think we've established that /you're/ the one that likes piss, considering you're the one that drinks it on a regular basis, but whatever." Man, he's really off his game today. That's a side effect to this crap that the doctors hadn't pre-warned him of.

He groans as Brody continues to laugh. "Seriously?" Because dammit Brody, it's really not that funny. "How is /that/ supposed to make me feel better? Dick." But Brody's arms around him relax him a little bit - and then the asshole finally manages to calm the fuck down, so he just relaxes against him once more with an indignant huff. When the older man shifts them, Sebastian summons the best of his energy to shuffle and make enough space for Brody to get comfortable. "My jokes are awesome. They're just wasted on you because your sense of humour sucks." And, god, it's getting harder and harder not to let the fatigue drag him under when Brody's hand cards through his hair. He can feel his body getting heavier by the second. "Mm, if they're coming to Lima for their sex tour, then they're obviously just coming so they can have sex with /me/. They'll just have to wait it out." He lets out a weak chuckle. "Don't worry, Brodes. The sex tape's coming."

“So you’re going to die because I don’t lather you up? That’s not melodramatic at all. But he can still keep things light, he reassures himself. “Well, you are just kind of a sac of potatoes. With no ass. But I still probably should let someone medically qualified keep you sanitary. I’d hate to be responsible for a horny ghost wandering around.” Brody smiles and glances around the empty room. “Yeah, I feel like the soaps lied to us. Where are all the hot doctor and nurses and their wacky antics? All but laying perfectly flat now, only propped up enough that his head is still able to look down on Bas comfortably (which was //not// the intention-- just coincidence), Brody smiles. “Mm-hmm. Absolutely epic, of course. I’m the one with the ill-developed humor.” He’s blinking rapidly now, trying to keep his eyes open, but that’s just because of the position he’s in. Brody just wants to rest his eyes for a minute, while Bas gets comfortable. Then he can go, after the other drifts off. “Well, obviously, but I’m not sure if their schedule will provide them the time to wait on such a diva,” he murmurs. “I'm sure. Alright Bas, I got you.” He pulls him in a little closer, his voice dropping in volume and losing track as his thoughts muddle together. “You're alright. I’ve got you, Bas.”

"Well you /did/ say you were gonna let me die, Brodes - so, really, you were the one being melodramatic in the first place." Yeah, he's aware that he sounds like a kid when, for all intents and purposes, he's using the argument of 'you started it', but really, Brody /did/ start it. "Don't need to be able to actually touch anything. According to TV rules, I'll have telekinetic powers." He huffs, but ignores the latter part because... yeah, he's got nothing. He chuckles, shifting slightly because, in all honesty, the visual image won't shift from his mind and the last thing he needs to do is pop a boner in the middle of the hospital. His dignity's taken enough of a beating over the past 24 hours. "You tell yourself whatever you need to to get by. But fine - find me a hot doctor, and /he/ can throw me against a wall." No - not helping with the situation at all. Shut up, Sebastian. He snorts. "Right? I can't believe television /lied/ to us. Where's the hot Australian guy from House when we need him?" He clicks his tongue, tilting his head to the side. "It's more a testament to how hot I am." Although, he has to admit, the eye candy is somewhat lacking. He rolls his eyes. "It is an expression," he presses back, somewhat weakly.

Although the older man does make for a comfortable pillow to lean against, so he can't really complain about it that much. "Your humour sucks," he mumbles in agreement, only vaguely aware of the fact that he's repeating himself. Brody's words make his chest squeeze, and he squeezes his eyes tight, because the thought that's been circulating at the back of his mind is glaring at him now - and, fuck. He's too tired to even fight it. Doesn't mean he can't /ignore/ it, but he can't deny to himself that this asshole /means/ something to him. That's a whole new set of terrifying that he can't bring himself to ponder much further - especially when his body is so damned heavy, and he feels like he's fading. His arm snakes over Brody's stomach, though, his body moving of its own free will. "I know," he mumbles quietly, not sure if the older man has even /heard/ him.

“Aw, yes, of course-- how could I forget. //I’m// the one trying to force me to give you a sponge bath instead of the old lady nurses.” His smile is soft and he half-hopes Bas //isn’t// tired, because this stupid back-and-forth really is something he’s missed. “Yeah, I don’t think telekinesis is going to help your particular issue, so unless your plan is to make me suffer with you by leaving me in a perpetual state of blue balls…” Brody doesn’t know when he started falling back into sex talk-- he shouldn’t be. They’re in a hospital, for pete’s sake-- the guy is hooked up to an IV, staying for multiple days. And Brody shouldn’t even be here: he should have left when Blaine showed up. But as he’s been doing continuously, he pushes the thought of what he should do from his mind in favor of the comfortable feeling of what they //are// doing. Brody scoffs, “Oh yeah, absolutely-- the next hot doctor I see is all yours Bas. I’ll just make sure he understands your vitals and actual well-being are secondary to you being pushed up against a wall.” He shakes his head in faux disgust. “Or that redhead from Grey’s Anatomy? Or hell, I’d take George Clooney at this point. I’m telling you-- I must have been out of my mind driving you here. I feel awful.” He smirks, “Yes, Bas-- your deathly pallor is the sexiest thing to grace these halls. Should the zombie apocalypse come, we will have to either keep you alive at all costs or shoot you before the undead arrive, because otherwise everyone will line up waiting for your bony undead ass to feast on them.” Wow, his mind is really fritzing from lack of sleep apparently, even though he’s not tired.

He’s trying like hell to control himself-- he thinks he might be in shock. It’s a little familiar to what happened after the thing with the ostrich, after all. “Most people don’t end up in the hospital for doing a strip show in the snow. So--” snort “--this is about as much //sucking// as you’re going to be getting for a while, Bas.” They’re both quiet now, though, and through Brody’s fuzzy brain, he’s pretty sure Bas said something back, but the only thing he really notices anymore is how soft and warm Bas’ skin is (not clammy anymore, thank god, just warm), and how oddly soothing it is to feel his body wheezing against him. “Mm-hmm…” He’s just really comfortable right now, He’ll get up in just a second...

"See? I mean, all you need to do is talk to the person at the reception desk. I'm pretty sure they'd be fine with it." He lets out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. "I mean, some vengeful spirits /can/ have sex, but, you know, they usually kill you afterwards, so I'll stick with the telekinesis- you're welcome. Maybe I'll just follow you around and start scaring away any potential for sex. Misery loves company, after all." Why is it that every single conversation with this asshole ended up escalating into the most ridiculous scenarios they could drum up? Not that he's complaining - it's actually kind of amusing. "Good - I'm glad we cleared that one up. Just make sure he's strong enough to hold me up, will you? If I'm getting pinned against a wall, I don't want my feet touching the ground." And, of course, he can barely hold himself up as it is. The very idea of having sex right now is /exhausting/, even for him. Not that it makes it any less fun to joke about. "Seriously, Brodes. What were you thinking? Isn't there a way to check out the attractiveness of the staff /before/ you dump a guy in here? I feel like that should be a thing. Should've just kept driving." He raises his eyebrows, but lets out a fond huff of amusement. Brody's mind really is one of a kind. "I wouldn't worry about it. Being that I'm obviously the protagonist in this situation, I'd have to at least make it through the ordeal longer than everyone else would. I mean, once I'm out of the picture, everyone else would just be too depressed to go on, anyway."

He groans, running his hands over his face. He really had set that one up, hadn't he? He's starting to wonder if this isn't more of a subconscious effort on his part to /allow/ Brody to make his not-at-all-funny jokes. He hums against Brody, only a little aware of the way that he presses himself against the older man as if trying to seek out the heat as his body attempts to drag him under.

“Of course-- I mean, you’re just hooked up to an IV here for days. What could possibly go wrong that you wouldn’t want just anyone looking after you?” Brody murmurs softly, even smiling now despite the fact that it is actually a terrifying thing, Bas attached to all these wires and tubes and laying here until who knows when. He nods in mocking thoughtfulness, “Yeah, well, I guess I appreciate you not sucking out my soul through my dick, or however that works,” he chuckles at the insanity of the remark. “Yeah, but I’ll still be able to get myself off, unlike you-- so there’s that at least.” Brody lets out a soft sigh, because that’s some imagery he’s not unfamiliar with-- if Bas didn’t look so awful right now, he’d consider being turned on-- but tacks on a quiet laugh to smooth it over. “I will make sure it is right after ‘hot’ on my list of priorities as I scour the floors for you.” He hums softly in concession at Bas’ accusation, because the whole thing is nonsense, really. “Next time, absolutely.” Like hell there’ll be a next time-- next time Bas goes out drinking, Brody’s hunting him down and locking him in the bathroom. Not the nice one-- the guest bathroom. Brody’s lips pull upwards in amusement as Bas predicts the story’s outcome. “Absolutely-- we’ll all be too lost without you: may as well just lay down and let them have us.”

It probably takes too long, but eventually Bas is too exhausted to keep feeding into Brody’s hysterics, and without the fuel the fire manages to die down, with him just carefully tracing his fingers against his arm, breathing the scent of his hair in a way that relaxes his overworked worry and tense muscles, and as Bas’ noisy breaths even out, he allows himself to rest his eyes for just another minute.

The sun isn’t going to be up for another hour, he’s fairly certain, when something draws Brody awake. An unsettling feeling-- like guilt or embarrassment, which is odd, he thinks as his arms curl tighter around the warm body lying on top of him, because he doesn’t know why he’d be either in the comfort of his own-- His brain finally catches up, and his eyes fly open to reveal that he’s fallen asleep in the hospital room-- in Sebastian’s bed, with Sebastian, in the hospital room. With Blaine now staring at them from the doorway, and Brody realizes how this looks, and practically flies out of the bed, only moving slow enough to keep the guy from banging his head on the uncomfortable mattress before scurrying away from him. “He’s asleep, I think he’s okay-- I should go.” It all comes out in a rush, faster still when Marley comes up behind him, eyes widening at what he’s sure looks like him being very flustered by their appearance. He doesn’t wait for their response, just bolts out of the door and out of the hotel as quickly as his feet can take him, trying to ignore the tingling sensation left over, on his skin and in his chest, as he turns on his truck and shifts into gear.

summary: preparing for a concert is exhausting, but suji finds it to all be worth it date: april 13th location: concert vcr filming word count: 441 words ooc note: april schedule self-para

suji can still remember the fluttering feeling that overtook her right before fuse’s first concert. she still gets nervous when she has to stand in front of big crowds, but a concert always feels a little different. there’s a sort of assurance that comes from knowing that the people who have filled up the thousands of seats in the concert hall are all there to support the group. it’s unlike end of the year events or award shows where there’s a diverse crowd, including those who many not be the biggest fan of fuse or suji herself.

she’s told that this is only the first day of vcr filming. there’s not a direct date of its ending just yet because things can get delayed, unexpected events may occur, and sets can get destroyed, but she’s expecting it to last at least three or four days. she thinks that’s how many days it took for the last one. thankfully, today’s filming consisted of just studio things so she wouldn’t have to deal with being outside. outside scenes were always more difficult.

it’s supposed to be a sleepover kind of scene, and she wonders if the whole concert is somewhat sponsored by snow because they’re told to use the cute filters that are there. of course, the members being their silly selves decide on a couple of cute ones but also a few silly ones. their fans will enjoy them both, and she personally finds it easier to act natural with the slightly funnier ones. if they’re supposed to be acting like they’re at some slumber party, might as well include things that would actually happen at one, right?

filming takes practically all day, and by the end of it all, suji’s about ready to fall asleep on the couch that’s on set. she’s slightly jealous of the second group that gets to have an actual bed, but then she thinks that if she were to film on that, she would have gone to sleep hours ago. she looks at all the staff members around her who are all massaging their shoulders, slumped down onto their seats (for the ones that have one) and leaning against the wall in hopes of conserving energy.

a concert doesn’t simply happen. it requires hard work from almost everybody, and suji once again reminds herself to always appreciate the people around her. the staff members who probably don’t even get paid enough for doing this all day. she takes her time to do her best at individually saying goodbye to each staff member though they all know they’ll be seeing one another for the next few days.
