Steel Roofing Maintenance: Tips for a Long-lasting Investment
Maintaining the strength and appearance of your COLORBOND® and ZINCALUME® steel investment is crucial for its protection. To achieve this, a simple and effective method is to regularly wash it with water. While roof cladding exposed to rainwater may not require maintenance, wall cladding under eaves, garage doors, and eave gutters requires periodic cleaning. If regular maintenance does not work, remove all dirt from the paint surface, you can follow the steps below: 1. If areas are not regularly exposed to rainwater, it is recommended to rinse them with a hose at least every six months. For areas with high levels of industrial fallout or marine salt spray, more frequent rinsing may be necessary.
2. If regular maintenance does not remove all the dirt from the paint surface, create a mild cleaning solution by mixing pure soap or a gentle, non-abrasive kitchen detergent with warm water. 3. Use a sponge, soft cloth, or soft-bristled nylon brush to gently apply the solution, taking care to avoid creating shiny patches. Rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water to remove any residual detergent.
4. Do not use abrasive or solvent-based cleaners such as turps, petrol, kerosene, or paint thinners on these types of steel.
By following these care and maintenance instructions, you can ensure that your COLORBOND® pre-painted steel and ZINCALUME® steel building components provide many years of low-maintenance service. You can find a range of Steel Roofing available online via our website or find samples in-store. For more information, please contact our friendly staff at Coburg, Campbellfield, or Hallam today.

The Benefits of a Steel Roof
Tumblr media
A steel roof is a roofing system made of metal pieces or tiles characterized by high resistance, impermeability and longevity. It is a component of the building envelope and can be roll-formed into standing seam profiles or stamped into individual shingles.
It is one of the best choices for a long-lasting roof. It is also energy-efficient, reflecting heat from the sun. This helps keep the home cool during hot weather and minimizes air conditioning costs in summer.
Longevity
Despite their high initial price tag, steel roofs are highly durable and can last decades if they are properly installed. This makes them a smart long-term investment for any home or commercial property.
The lifespan of metal roofing depends on several factors, including installation, ventilation, and climate. Standing seam metal roofs can last over 50 years, but other types of metal roofs, like screw-down panel roofs, age much faster and usually only last 20–30 years.
The most important factor that determines how long a steel roof will last is the weather in your area. The longer the weather is mild, the better your metal roof will last. The lifespan of a steel roof also depends on whether or not the panels are protected with a protective coating during installation.
Corrosion Resistance
If you live in a coastal area, you may be concerned about the corrosion that can occur when your metal roof comes in contact with salt air. It can cause rusting which will eventually lead to the need for a roof replacement.
To combat this issue, most steel roofing is coated with a corrosion-resistant metallic coating. This is usually made up of a combination of zinc and aluminum.
Galvalume is another type of coating that can be used in a variety of environments. It contains a zinc-aluminum-silicon mixture to protect against oxidation and rust.
Zinc ions form a protective barrier on the metal surface before iron can become Ferric Oxide (rust). This process is called galvanization.
Durability
Steel roofs are one of the most durable roofing materials on the market. They can last for up to 40–70 years if you take care of them properly.
They also withstand winds up to 120 mph, are fire-resistant and very effective at sealing out moisture. This helps prevent rot and mold in your roof and attic.
Metal roofs come in a variety of styles and colors, including galvanized steel and stainless steel. Both of these options are rust-resistant and can last for years without corroding or fading.
In addition to their durability, steel roofs are also energy-efficient. They absorb less heat than asphalt shingles, so your air conditioning won’t have to work as hard during hot weather. Additionally, they reflect the sun’s rays more efficiently than asphalt shingles.
Recyclability
One of the most eco-friendly options for roofs is metal, which can be recycled again and again. This helps minimize the embodied energy that would otherwise be used in new products.
The recyclability of steel roofing and wall-cladding also allows it to be integrated into a sustainable building design approach such as the Circular Economy (CE).
In New Zealand, 75% of the steel in buildings is recycled at the end of life for buildings. This is in line with the CE approach, where the goal is to reduce the use of virgin materials in manufacturing products and minimize construction waste.
The recycling of steel is also in line with the LEED certification program, which requires a minimum of 26 points for a building. Specifying PAC-CLAD steel and aluminum products that are manufactured with recycled materials can help earn LEED credits.
