Galaxy Classification, Pt. 2
Based on how well my last post on galaxy classification was received, I would say that you all enjoy seeing what I have to say about the multitude of celestial bodies in our universe. So I’m here again with more information on galaxies and how they’re classified, including information on the system designed by Edwin Hubble in 1926.
So to begin. What system is used to classify galaxies?
That would be the Hubble Sequence, or the Hubble Tuning Fork, called so for the shape it takes.
Tumblr media
As was discussed in the last post, the sequence begins with the elliptical galaxies on the left, smooth and featureless galaxies that are far less efficient at producing stars than their spiral cousins. It breaks off into two junctions once you reach a certain point, and you get your typical spiral galaxies on one prong and barred spirals on the other. Edwin then arranged the spirals sub-categories (SBa, SBb, SBc etc) based on how open the arms of the spirals are.
You may notice that there are no irregular galaxies in the sequence. As discussed previously, the reason they’re called irregular in the first place is that they can’t fit into the sequence cleanly due to their chaotic appearances and behavior that don’t fully encompass neither spiral nor elliptical galaxies, so they’re left out of the sequence entirely.
“What about lenticular galaxies, where do they fit?” you may ask. Right in the middle, just before the fork splits. S0 (and some would lump in certain E7 galaxies) is where lenticular galaxies lie in the sequence.
Lenticular galaxies are disk like with a central bulge but no spiral arms, and don’t produce very many new stars, if any at all. From a certain angle, they look like a lens, hence their name. This disk like shape is also what discerns them from elliptical galaxies, which have no disk structure at all.
Example:
Tumblr media
This is NGC 5866, a lenticular galaxy in the constellation Draco. Note the clear flat disk of dust in the center, and the structure of the disk. Remember, an elliptical galaxy would have no such structure, and appear more vaguely oval shaped with not as much dust.
Example:
Tumblr media
This is NGC 1132, an elliptical galaxy in the constellation Eridanus. Note the ellipsoidal shape, the lack of disk-like structure, and how it appears to have almost no dust at all, which means this galaxy most likely doesn’t produce stars at all anymore. A lenticular galaxy, while nowhere near as proficient at star production as a sprial galaxy, has at least some potential to produce stars, while ellipticals have significantly less.
There is one other type of galaxy that I haven’t talked about yet. Seyferts.
A Seyfert galaxy, named for American astronomer Carl K. Seyfert, is one of the two most active ‘galaxies’ in the universe, the other being quasars (which I will have to make a separate post about, as they’re not really galaxies, they’re sort of their own thing called an Active Galactic Nucleus ((AGN, which Seyferts have too)) but don’t fit into the Hubble sequence at all). They’re separated into two main types, Type I and Type II, with much smaller groups consisting of Type 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, and 1.9, but I’ll only be going into the two main types.
Nearly all Seyfert galaxies are spiral or barred spiral galaxies with extremely bright sources of ultraviolet light and x-rays, in addition to the light coming from their tiny cores. This light can and does frequently fluctuate in brightness. Most are powerful sources of infrared radiation. In addition, some emit intensely in the radio, X ray, and gamma ray regimes. The radiation excites gas around the central regions, giving rise to the observed emission lines (which are specific patterns of wavelengths that are generated when atoms of hydrogen, oxygen, or nitrogen are bombarded by high-energy radiation). They’re classified according to the relative widths of the emission lines in their spectra.
Type I Seyferts have broad emission lines of hydrogen, but narrow forbidden lines of heavier elements.
Example:
Tumblr media
This is NGC 5548, a Seyfert spiral in the Boötes constellation. You can see the arms that have more hydrogen in them have much thicker widths, and the ones that contain less hydrogen are much thinner and dimmer. Also note the extremely bright core. Its light is the result of matter falling into the accretion disk of a supermassive black hole over 65 million solar masses in size.
Conversely, in type II Seyferts, the hydrogen lines and forbidden lines are, relatively, the same width, typically broader than the forbidden lines in type I, but not as broad as the hydrogen lines.
Example:
Tumblr media
This is NGC 1068, a Seyfert spiral in the constellation Cetus. Note how more or less uniform the emission lines’ widths are. This galaxy’s core is also extremely bright, but less so than the type I example due to having a much smaller supermassive black hole at its center, perhaps only 15 million solar masses in size.
And, once again, I’m (unfortunately) not an astrophysicist, I’m simply a person who really, really loves space and wants to share my knowledge of the universe with everyone else. There’s plenty of actual scholarly papers you can find that explain galaxy types much more in depth and intelligently than I did, but I still hope that this little science lesson was interesting to some of you.

The beautiful Andromeda Galaxy is often imaged by planet Earth-based astronomers. Also known as M31, the nearest large spiral galaxy is a familiar sight with dark dust lanes, bright yellowish core, and spiral arms traced by blue starlight. A mosaic of well-exposed broad and narrow-band image data, this colorful, premier portrait of our neighboring island universe offers strikingly unfamiliar features though, faint reddish clouds of glowing ionized hydrogen gas in the same wide field of view. Still, the ionized hydrogen clouds likely lie in the foreground of the scene, well within our Milky Way Galaxy. They could be associated with the pervasive, dusty interstellar cirrus clouds scattered hundreds of light-years above our own galactic plane. If they were located at the 2.5 million light-year distance of the Andromeda Galaxy they would be enormous, since the Andromeda Galaxy itself is 200,000 or so light-years across. NASA's Hubble Sees A Majestic Disk of Stars by NASA Goddard Photo and Video NASA image release Feb. 17, 2011 To see a hd vidoe of this sprial galaxy go to: www.flickr.com/photos/gsfc/5453173577/ The Hubble Space Telescope revealed this majestic disk of stars and dust lanes in this view of the spiral galaxy NGC 2841. A bright cusp of starlight marks the galaxy's center. Spiraling outward are dust lanes that are silhouetted against the population of whitish middle-aged stars. Much younger blue stars trace the spiral arms. Notably missing are pinkish emission nebulae indicative of new star birth. It is likely that the radiation and supersonic winds from fiery, super-hot, young blue stars cleared out the remaining gas (which glows pink), and hence shut down further star formation in the regions in which they were born. NGC 2841 currently has a relatively low star formation rate compared to other spirals that are ablaze with emission nebulae. NGC 2841 lies 46 million light-years away in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear). This image was taken in 2010 through four different filters on Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3. Wavelengths range from ultraviolet light through visible light to near-infrared light. NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Heritage (STScI/AURA)-ESA/Hubble Collaboration; Acknowledgment: M. Crockett and S. I guess I’ll write here despite not feeling completely in the mood. It’s been a rough couple of days. Not to long ago, I posted an entry about how difficult it is to just go to sleep without falling into seductive things. In the end, it didn’t matter. The morning after, I didn’t run because it was Sunday About that, it’s weird that I’ve been shifting my sabbath to either sat or sun depending when my off day is. However, I make the thought to always not run on Sunday. This begs me to ask if in doing sabbath for myself or God? This running break is a bit outdated maybe.
So Sunday morning, I woke up at 6am. I prayed and read a bit of the bible, obliging 30 mins and a bit more. However, after I finished, I remember allowing to eat some of the chocolate chips I bought the day before. This little bit turned into one bag and me retreating into my room to read some articles online. This surfing became reddit. This became anime. Anime became YouTube everything from cinema critique, to Dave letterman to ultimately YouTube gamers.
Alot of this started with anxiety about scootering to the coastal village half of my team rsides at. The ride is 30 mins and I’ve only done it once, while following some classmates to the nearby supermarket. In addition, I felt reluctant to work. This is also the day after I decided to not watch any YouTube at all whereas before, I felt leading from God watching Casey neistat and vlogbrothers are ok exceptions. in addition, not being able to remember if this was something I felt God wanted me to do, I also decided to not watch anime. However, after taking a few bites of chocolate which evolved into more, watching anime was the first trigger into unwanted territory. So not only scooting down was stressful but also church in the evening. I had all the intention and desire to go especially not having gone the week before. However, after a carb high, it was relatively easy to put.off going that day. Things only acclimated from there. I locked myself in the apartment, ans proceeded to intoxicate.myself with chocolate, sugar, cream cheese, and tea biscuits.
The day before at the supermarket, I bought ingredienta to bake cheesecake cookie dough bars. I bought enough ingredients to. Bake for all my classmates and the faculty. I initially had apprehension thinking that this food might be dangerous to have I. The house. However, I decided the risk was worth it as I’ve wanted to do.something for.my class.for awhile. Thanks particular problem was the awareness.that it’s a long weekend and since going to London on wednesday, I felt the good timing for baking wasn’t till.thursday. this aside, I still slipped into food thinking I’ll only eat just enough extra that will.allow me to bake. However, this little bit became added onto with additional compromise. I grazed more.and more and the dullness.started to.kick in. Time started to speed up about then.
I haven’t binged on so.much dense carb I. Such quantity for.a long time. My recent binges may be a mixture of carbs, protein and artificial sweeteners. However, this was something else than all my other comrpomised weekend. I ate a 100gram bag of chocolate then ate another. Then I ate a pack of tea biscuits and some.creamcheese mixed.with sugar. In addition was oatmeal mixed with sugar. Time sped so much faster then I’ve experienced lately. All of a sudden it was 1pm, then 3pm, the 6pm. I ended up sleeping like 1am.
Throughout the time I knew I should be working on the project yet I put it off. The studio was closed this weekend so it’s either working at my flat or going to my teammates place. When I felt time slipping and feeling I won’t work the first day, I thought to myself I’ll.work thefollowing day. When I woke up the following day, I had a slight premonition things won’t turn out for the better.
Weird thing was forgetting to take my antidepressant the night before in addition to magnesium supplement. I didn’t particularly feel bad but the day had no momentum. It only took reading some news article or whatnot online before completely losing it. I finished off the remainder of the baking ingredients, which was twice as much carbs as the day before, and entered obliviously into YouTube. I barely remember anything that happened that day. The only plan was to go watch the new guardians of the Galaxy in the evening which, to my relief and post grief, no one followed up with me on it. The day ended exactly the same way it began, completely locked in my home. The only difference was further guilt from not working and the guilt/fear of weight gain.
Now looking back, i could’ve dumped all the binge food in the toilet but I now.realize throughout the whole process, I kept rationalizing the logic of eating only a little bit more until my brain was completely impaired. Throughout this time I also particularly didn’t seek God. What’s interesting is that when things like this happens, I typically try really hard to keep “just” asking God for help, believing really the willpower avails nothing. I throughout the time, kept having distinct forewarning before opening another.pack of biscuits that I’ll regret this. Nonetheless, instead of taking action, I just kept asking God for help to be freed from all of thia. I feel I remember many times where I with wilpower stopped myself only to feel even more temptation and slip even farther in. It is because of this I’ve.grown to really believe only God can save me from this. The previous idea was all the energy I could expend resisting temptations, I could spend looking at God. However, sometimes I wonder how holy such a thing is. I do believe God has spares me from way worse consequences just by his grace to my plea.
I read a frighteningly lucid description of what it’s like to take drugs over the weekend. I read things.like meth, Adderall and speed gives a distinct high and happy feeling. The side effect is a hard crash felt afterwards, kind flike alcohol and hangover after. Heroine on the other hand feels.at first innocuous with slight improvement in mood. The benefit is the lack of crash after. I can relate to the effects of Adderall since having taken it for over a year medically. Heroine on the other hand sounds frighteningly. Apparently, what small amount that had strong effect on the body later becomes not enough. Later, life becomes unbareavle without heroine and to.get the right hit, the cost is ten times the original. It sounds like a horrific downward sprial.
Overloading on carbs seems to have similar destructive qualities to the worst drugs on the streets. There’s a crazy high after binging. The sugar in the body enters the blood stream and with the seratonin and such kicking in, and the body unable to regulate all the sugar, things go out of control. The brain gets over excited and a dullness kicks in in addition, I don’t feel.as depressed about all the work I’m not doing. However once the high wears off, I get scared and binge again. It’s a terrible snowball.
It’s perhaps worth noting until now.moat of my binge slip either entailed alot of rice mixed with artificial sweeteners and soy sauce or nuts and low carb snacks I keep in my studio. All of these don’t give the brain high u felt binging on high carb items.
