On a trip to Shetland I spotted what was probably Drosera rotundifolia (round-leaved sundew) growing amongst sphagnum moss at the edge of a pool. This tiny carnivorous plant catches insects to increase their nitrogen supply using sticky leaves as traps.

Repotted my #ChineseHolly #bonsai over the holidays. It used to have its 2 trunks intertwined before, but I managed to separate them and make it into a 3-trunk bonsai in training. I also exposed some of the roots when I transplanted it, so I have to cover it with #SphagnumMoss so as not to get dry (I read that Sphagnum Moss can retain moisture well, so, with this, I'll have to eventually remove it to prevent fungal build-up once the roots have adapted well in months to come)... I have recently seen new shoots growing in the trunks after a couple of weeks in shade so I will transition it now to a sunny south-facing location. Chinese Holly are notoriously sensitive when being transplanted so I am glad I was succesful on this one. On the Isle of Tiree, Scotland, in the acidic, boggy environment of depressions or hollows among sphagnum moss was growing Drosera rotundifolia (sundew). These insectivorous plants have modified leaves covered with red hairs that secrete a sticky substance for catching their prey. Once an insect lands on the leaf, more mucilage is released and the leaf slowly closes around its latest nitrogen source.

A highly absorbent plant which can hold up to 26 times it’s own dry weight. Moss can help retain water during drier conditions. Dead and decaying sphagnum moss or peat is often harvest and used as a soil supplement to help sandy dry soil types hold moisture. It could be used to help plants grow in drier areas impacted by drought.

Sphagnum peat bogs are very important in terms of dealing with the impacts of climate change. They provide a variety of ecosystem services through their role in sequestering carbon, preserving bio diversity, and purifying water. Sphagnum peat bogs also regulate water flows minimizing the risk of flooding, drought and seawater intrusion. Members of the Paris Agreement on climate change are encouraged to include peatland restoration in their climate plans.

Hoy os traigo una fotaza de mi flamante Drosera Aliciae nativa de Sudáfrica. Como sabéis se trata de una planta carnívora que se alimenta de los insectos que quedan atrapados en sus glándulas mucilaginosas.
