05.02.17 - Officially Inducted

Oh look, I’m on a boat...
So, that’s my induction week completed. If I remember correctly then I covered Monday and Tuesday in my last post as well as moving over so lets talk about the rest of the week!
I don’t want to sound negative but the first couple of days during induction were quite heavy. There was nothing that made you regret joining the course but there was a considerable emphasis on your academic expectations, codes of conduct and the many things you can get dropped for (don’t worry, almost all of it can be avoided by being punctual, taking responsibility for your education, being sensible with your alcohol intake and generally treating them with the same respect you’d give your employer).
Luckily it was more upbeat from Wednesday onwards with visits from IMarEST (a maritime union), the Apostleship Of The Sea (a neutral maritime welfare support organisation), Barry Sadler (highly regarded pilot and assessor) and a couple of phase three students talking about their experiences so far. Some of the stories from Apostleship were a little grim (It’s easy to forget that we have stricter regulations within our industry than a lot of countries) but overall it was a lot more positive and enthusiastic. We also had an induction to the simulation suites which was a lot of fun!  I also joined the gym – I can’t see myself getting ripped but I could definitely stand to lose a few pounds, especially as our daily exercise could be quite limited when we’re spending all our time on site.
Thursday was the first of two day trips, one heading east of Warsash and the other, the west. We were picked up by quite a plush coach which was amusingly overkill for 7 cadets and a tutor but hey, I’m not complaining. The first call of port was Southampton Solent for a tour of the new dorms, sports facilities and library. I can really see myself using the library come essay time, especially with the 24 hour opening shuttle busses between the two campuses.
The dorms were pretty standard university fare – an ensuite bathroom, single bed, wardrobe and work area. They’re quite cosy but comfortable. The visit did prompt a discussion about the future of Warsash, a discussion in which I can see both sides. On one hand the Warsash campus does hold a lot of history and the current set up does help nurture a sense of comradery amongst cadets but there’s no denying that it could do with a lick of a paint and the transport links leave a lot to be desired.  On the flip side, being in the city centre could be a big distraction for some cadets and, although I trust Warsash to maintain the same high level of education in the new building, my time at UCA Epsom shown me just how disruptive big changes can be to a programme when not handled properly. Time will tell I guess.
Next up was a trip on the Fishbourne to Lymington car ferry with Captain Alex Procopuk. Let’s be honest for a moment here, I’m a born and bred Islander so journeys on Wightlink ferries are as common as bus journeys for us but it was actually very, very interesting. The crew made us feel very welcome and Captain Alex was a fantastic host, taking time to answer any questions we may have and providing a step-by-step walkthrough during the journey. Being able to steer for a few minutes was a definite highlight and really hammered home the point that standing watch isn’t simply looking out of a window – even on a calm day you’re constantly conversing with the ocean and actively adjusting to compensate for window, tides and other factors. We also had a quick tour of the engine rooms – I didn’t understand much of it as it was so loud but if that’s the noise generated by a relatively small vessel then I’d hate to encounter the engine rooms of a cruise ship.
Now Friday was the designated fun day. Warsash would normally take a new batch of cadets paintballing but seeing as there’s only seven of us they opted for a daytrip to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyards. I’m a big fan of the dockyards so that was more than ok with me and being given a year long pass was an added bonus – with Gosport only being an hour or so busy journey away (and probably less on a bike when the weather picks up) I can see myself returning relatively soon to visit the submarine and explosion museums. We took a tour of the Victory, played some Lazerquest, got some lunch at Gunwharf and did a little shopping before I took my leave and caught a boat back to the Isle of Wight where I was to play a show later that night.
A note on the food at Warsash – it’s edible but nothing to write home about. It’s nice being able to hand the responsibility of cooking to someone else whilst studying but I actually enjoy cooking so I can see myself getting a little frustrated at times. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve definitely eaten worse and the salad bar makes for a good lunch, but it still has that school cafeteria feel to it all. Saying that, I could definitely do with eating healthier and it’s stopped me snacking so much so that’s a bonus.
I think I’ll leave it there for now – I’ll probably post again next week once we’ve started our classes and touch upon the gym but I’ve rambled on for long enough.
