okay so! i'm planning to go to film school for college, but that's still a bit away so i'm trying to learn a little bit by myself beforehand- hence why the screenplay question came up, because turns out THIS IS VERY HARD TO LEARN ABOUT INFORMALLY

but i've had an idea for a movie floating around in my head for a while, and like. it's never gonna get made, but i have SO many thoughts about it and i thought 'hey, might as well give writing it down a shot just as a fun project'

the concept is essentially a modern slasher/horror film centered around a woman who runs a true crime podcast/youtube channel, who's That kind of true crime fan that treats real victims' stories like jokes and is just INCREDIBLY disrespectful- i'm sure you know what i'm talking about, it's unfortunately EVERYWHERE right now.

but like for main inspiration and stuff i guess i've had both spree (the 2020 movie with joe keery) and fresh (the 2022 movie with sebastian stan) in mind the entire time? from spree, the concept of the internet fueling toxicity and actual physical harm to real people because of not only the anonymity of an online persona, but also because of the inherent clout-chasing that's born from the way that so much social media is structured. from fresh, it's more of the way that it's shot- i really likedthe cinematography from that film, i thought it was super neat and easy to understand even from a beginner's point of view.

on top of both of those, i really enjoy gothic horror in literature and movies, so my goal is to kind of draw from the concept of humanizing the "villain" that's so huge in gothic literature. gothic horror is about the inherent horror OF humanity- i'd love to be able to play off of that by not only having an antagonist with incredibly understandable if twisted reasoning, but also by having a protagonist that undergoes a severe shift in their moral code after recognizing the bad things that they've done. and i know that just sounds like a basic character arc because i'm not doing a good job of explaining it lmao- but i'd really love to have the horror come not from a man with a knife and a scary mask, but from the reality of the situation, where the audience can recognize that it's very real and a genuine problem in modern internet culture, if that makes sense?

and finally, i LOVE guillermo del toro's work. god, what i would GIVE to talk to him about some of his project, they're absolutely incredible- so i suppose there's some aspect of that admiration that's been floating around in my brain and adding spice to this project.

but. yeah. sorry for the rant in your inbox, but LORD i've needed a chance to talk about this somewhere, so thank you if you read this LMAO

god, anon. anon i have been thinking abt the whole true crime thesis thing FOR MONTHS THANK YOU, YOUR IDEA IS SUCH A GREAT WAY TO CONVEY THE TOXICITY ugh i need to watch more horror bc it as a medium to explore/comment on human experiences is so !!! and the commodification of human suffering for personal gain that is so fleeting? the self fulfilling prophecy of centering yourself in stories of real pain? when the protagonist isn’t the hero? GOD. super cool.

this was a lovely read and god your inspirations!! spree and fresh have been on my list forever, will definitely be checking these out now. and gothic horror, god, YES. i wrote an essay in high school about how henry from the picture of dorian gray was a vampire in all ways but physical and how oscar wilde was actually writing a horror novel. reread it recently and i don’t agree w 100% of it but it was making a similar point as you!

vís-a-vís learning informally: i’ve talked a little on here about stuff i’ve learned in college/things i’ve adopted into my process, all under the tag #film stuff. also happy to answer questions abt film school or share stuff i’ve learned! i’m by no means an expert but i can tell you what i’ve been told (abt storytelling and abt the industry)

BRUH NAAAAAAH you guys shouldn't encourage my behaviour. bc i very much already have one and it is extensively thought out and planned already, i just haven't written it bc like. ITS A LOT

the thing is is I'm the annoying kind of wrestling fan that knows WAY too much about it/how the business works/stuff like that. and the au is also basically just stealing the whole wwe (im not even renaming that shit) and replacing all the superstars with band members KSKSJFKSJTLSJ. it's by far THEE MOST self indulgent thing i've ever come up with, and if i were to write it, it would not be very reader-friendly 😅😅 i'd have to give quick explanations of a lot of things in the notes skdkcjsdfksjf

i think, despite that, i would really like to write it someday ajskadjccksfj

i'll try to explain it as briefly as i POSSIBLY can tho, because if i really went tf off we would be here for YEARS. under the cut, let's go:

andy and patrick go by hurley and patrick vaughn, respectively. they're a heel tag team called FC (was short for fuck city before they got to the wwe, but obviously they can't go by that name on live tv sldjcshfvh).

hurley is the wwe champion, and his gimmick is being dead silent 99% of the time and just fucking destroying opponents. he's just a big, murderous powerhouse, and that's why he's the top champion in the company.

patrick is his "manager", tag team partner when needed, and most importantly, his mouthpiece. patrick does all the talking for hurley, and he's a TOTAL BIIIIITCH as he does so.

joe just uses his real name, joe trohman. he is a babyface, and he's just a regular dude. classic wrestler. but in the beginning of the au, he's on the shelf due to a knee injury. in order to keep himself at work while he's hurt, joe's turned to working at the tv commentary table.

pete goes by kingston wentz, he's also a face, and he's got a supernatural gimmick. he's the "vampire king", which sounds stupid, and it is, but in wrestling it's also awesome. he's been in the developmental area (which is called nxt), and he's just getting called up to the main roster (which are monday night raw, and friday night smackdown) in the beginning.

i'm gonna switch between these names a lot sorry in advance. their ring names apply to, like, "kayfabe", in-universe wrestling stuff.

SO THE PLOT. BACKGROUND:

the royal rumble is a big payperview that happens every january

it's a MASSIVE match, with thirty entrants total

two guys start out wrestling in the ring

every 90 seconds, another wrestler will come out and join the match

the only way to be eliminated from the match is to have someone throw you over the top rope of the ring, and then both of your feet have to touch the ground

last man in the ring wins a chance to go to wrestlemania (wwe super bowl, basically), and face any champion of their choosing

SO. wrestling is pre-determined, right? so before joe hurt his knee, he was scripted to win the royal rumble. but obviously, he's not cleared to compete. so they need to come up w a new story.

joe casually brings up his friend in nxt, kingston, to the writers. he means to just give them a thirtieth competitor, fill the spot. the writers, however, say fuck it, and decide to not only bring kingston on, but ALSO HAVE HIM WIN. so. wow. those are some mixed feelings for mr joey t.

cut to the rumble, last people in the ring are kingston and vaughn. kingston eliminates vaughn, gets the W. vaughn lands on the ground near the commentary table, hears joe calling the win for tv, and his voice sounds exuberant but.. patrick sees joe's face. and joe's kinda torn, because as happy as he is for pete, it was supposed to be him.

and patrick's only a bad guy on tv. so he comes up with a storyline right then and there to make sure that joe gets to be part of wrestlemania somehow, too.

the next monday on raw, kingston is supposed to have a celebration of his win at the end of the show. he's in the ring, giving his babyface "thank you all for ur support omg" speech, when the big screen cuts to a live camera feed from the back. hurley and vaughn sent joe a note earlier, saying that the "chairman of the company" wanted to see him in his office. they lure him into an empty office, then "attack" him to get kingston's attention.

hurley wants kingston at wrestlemania, because since he eliminated vaughn, now they've got beef.

more happens ofc but this is getting way too fucking long, but by wrestlemania, joe's knee is healed and he's able to compete. he makes sure not to tell andy or pete, he only tells patrick. that way, in the middle of hurley v kingston, vaughn can come out to ringside to try and interrupt and help hurley win. that gives an opening for joe's music to hit, and him to come TEARRRRING down to the ring to beat the fuck out of vaughn lmao.

so then kingston wins the championship, joe gets to wrestle at the biggest show of the year, and everyone lives happily ever after!
