i have to wonder what was going through lawrence's head when he pulled that trigger. was he aiming for the right side of his chest, his shoulder, away from adam's heart to give him a more survivable outcome, or was that a slip of his trembling hand on the revolver and adam's moving back and forth as he begs, and lawrence fumbles a shot intended to really and truly kill him? was it really an act of self-preservation or one of mercy?
and when they both make it out alive, will lawrence explain himself? will he express his guilt? will he apologize or try to justify his actions? will adam believe him, will he find his remorse sincere? will it matter if he does or doesn't, because it still happened, he was still shot, he was still told he had to die, regardless of the reasons for it? will adam resent him? will he eventually understand? will he forgive lawrence? will his forgiveness be conditional? will it be earned? does it make him feel guilty, with the benefit of hindsight? will adam feel that they are equals in the aftermath of their shared trauma? or will it always feel like an unfair compromise, the sacrifice of lawrence's self-amputation weighed against the bullet adam has taken against his will?
and do they reconcile? if so, how long does it take? how difficult is it?
and will it heal them?
