BF B7 - Solitary

It’s been a while and I’ve been missing anything B7-y (though I’ve been working on the BDaS alternate), so here have the second one of these. Reminder again that they won’t necessarily come in order - this just happens to be the second one I did.

Vila is in solitary confinement. His friends have abandoned him, his only contact with the world outside is Nyrron, a scientist from the planet Auron.

Amnesiac and confused, Vila attempts to piece together recent events... A mission to Dulcimer 4. An important meeting. And a visit to the jungle world of Terrulis Major.

In the depths of the foliage, the truth is waiting. And it's more terrifying than Vila could possible have imagined...

Commentary:

I kinda really love the premise of most of the crew being ill – in fact, I have used it before. It’s good and tried. ;P

I also love the Robin Hood thing and of course it would be Vila. And you know, from the perspective of having listened to the audio before, it raises questions of how much our Vila remembers.

Not for the first time I feel that maybe, just maybe, Vila works best in first person. I’m not sure why that is. But I really love the audios from Vila’s perspective – and Vila isn’t a character that is easy to write – none of them are, really. And it’s definitely not just because of Michael Keating’s voice, certainly not. XD

Oh, Vila… “He has trust issues – well, not just issues, he doesn’t trust anyone.” Very nearly got that right, re: Avon.

I really really enjoy the crew being ill trope, and also Vila’s perspective on the rest of the crew.

The disgust at that muddy jungle planet is visceral, it’s brilliant.

I love the idea that Vila knows random legends and mysteries – “I like stories!” indeed.

Only of course it isn’t entirely Vila – or is it? I do enjoy the reveal in this episode – especially from a writer’s perspective: All the conversations that are happening that we don’t really know about… an unreliable narrator in so many ways. And again this is a moral dilemma; again this episode is about the right to live, what it means to be alive. Whether what is effectively a clone is just as “real” as the original. Only, of course, this time the gestalt has evil intentions, so in the end we don’t really feel sorry for it. And I don’t know how I feel about that – especially since I’m not sure why they even kept it alive for so long? Just because it looked like Vila, just because Nyrron was curious? There is a sort of idea that perhaps Nyrron thought it was benign – he does say he wanted to convince the others that it had a right to live. But then – I mean, killing the gestalt seems to have saved actual Vila. Surely there couldn’t have been any doubt that the gestalt had evil intentions based on Vila’s coma? Or was it that they wanted to make sure that the actual Vila hadn’t switched bodies? I’m not sure if this is a critique of the plotting of the episode, or if it’s just that I’d side with Avon – why run the risk of keeping the entity around?

At any rate, I enjoy the little fractions of insight into Vila’s past – if it is Vila’s past, which slightly, slightly reduces my enjoyment of the tidbits we learn. Then again – “Here’s to Roj Blake and his merry men!”

The Verdict: A solid episode – and as I mentioned, I enjoy Vila’s POV. The fact that it isn’t really Vila bugs me a little, though, and the ending always feels a little rushed to me. I also never really know how to feel about Nyrron... Not a favourite, but not terrible either.

Tangent of the Episode:

I’m fairly sure I’d read a crossover fic with Robin Hood before listening to this audio – I’d read a lot of fanfic before getting into the audios in the first place, but I remember that when I first listened to it I got a chuckle out of the Robin Hood thing because it had been in a crossover. What is interesting to me is how Vila as he narrates his past clearly identified with Robin Hood – but present-Vila (or real Vila?) casts Blake in that role. I think Vila would like other “gentleman thieves”, too – a kind of myth, a kind of story; and within the Federation, the people he is stealing from probably have deserved it. On the other hand, I always read Vila as someone who was actually proud of being a criminal, a bit of crook – the whole of Gambit, the “honest thievery” – him and Avon, really, are the ones most unapologetic about being criminals on the Liberator. Cally isn’t, Blake isn’t really, Jenna prefers “free trader” to “smuggler”, and Gan might have done something against the law, but for damn good reason. Meanwhile, Avon and Vila were (and are) motivated by avarice to a significant degree. Not saying that it’s their only motivation, but they don’t hide it.
