After nearly 10 years in the community, I have hit this massive number. Thank you all for supporting over the years!
I figured due to this and the Oscars being on today, I figured I would announce the second Sol Film Festival!
For those who were not here when the previous one happened, you take your Pokemon OCs and put them in a scene or movie poster that draws homage to a movie of your choice. I then judge the entries and pick the best of both the writing and the drawn categories.
This year I am upping the ante. The winners of both categories get $100.
Here are some ideas for what you can do.
A recreation of an official poster for a film
A recreation of a poster or DVD cover for a rerelease of a film. For example a Criterion Collection or Arrow covers.
A recreation of a single scene from a film. This can be done via a text post or art.
The Hard Rules
You must use Pokemon OCs only. You can use either a gijinka form or pokemon form, or both depending on your film. However they must be Pokemon OCs in a capacity.
Do not do any of the Pokemon or Digimon films. The reason for this is that since the ‘actors’ we are using are involved in the pokemon universe more or less it would be too easy to do a scene straight up pulling something that is in the Pokemon universe. Digimon is also too close to being similar so I want to cut that off at the pass.
Do not do television movies or movies that are continuations of or are a compressed telling of a TV series. For example Psyche the Movie,FF7 Advent Children, Serenity, El Camino, Full Metal Alchemist Conqueror of Shambala and the Zeta Gundam films are off limits due to fitting that above criteria.
TV show adaptations as a whole are not banned though. As an example, you can do pieces involving films such as In the Loop, the Original or live action Ghost In the Shell, In the Loop, Lupin the First, the Get Smart movie with Steve Carrel, any of the Street Fighter Movies and Final Fantasy Spirited Within are allowed to be homaged as they are not following a continuity.
At the longest, keep it to one scene from a movie if you do the scene recreation. Do not recreate the whole movie from start to end. That would be way too much effort than is required
The length of each submission would have to be, at most, the length of a scene in a movie, or part of a scene if you are drawing. So imagine you are making a storyboard or writing a novelization of a single scene from a movie. Do not adapt the full movie.
You can do a homage rather than a beat by beat recreation. What you choose to do is up to your digression.
Do not just recreate memes. We all laughed at Tommy screaming “I am fed up with dis wurld” and we all remember “Garbage Day”, but if you just try to meme your way through this competition your entry will be disqualified.
Do not implement any characters from askbohemiancompany or omnipokemonproducts. While I would respect my characters having cameos in any capacity usually, I don’t want it to come off like that is the best way to influence who wins. So do not implement them in any capacity in your projects.
If you entered last time, do not resubmit the same piece you did last time. You have to make another one. You can still do the same movie however.
Some Other Helpful Facts
In case you need help with picking film you can feel free to reach out to me and I can help you find some options based off your taste and what platforms are at your disposal.
If you cannot be sent the money I am willing to pay for a commission on the winner’s behalf.
Try to pick films that are not blockbusters. This is not regarding films that are popular, more so stuff like Fast and the Furious, MCU etc. I won’t disregard these types of entries but I want this to be a chance for people to discover new films. It’s just like the Oscars!
If I like your post that means I have seen it. I will not comment any further and if you want me to reblog it and write my thoughts on it after the deadline let me know.
The deadline for all Submissions is June 12th. Please tag all submissions SolFilmFestival2023 so I can keep track of the submissions.
Reblogs are appreciated!

An animatic entry for @askbohemiancompany‘s Sol Film Festival!
I picked the John Silver’s speech scene from Treasure Planet, a movie I hold dearly in my heart.
I picked this movie, and scene because of the found family aspect in them. When I grew up, my father never really was there for me. He would never support what I did, unless it was related to school. But aside from that, he never helped me at all. Heck, he even ridiculed me at times.
But this movie showed me that no matter how much the world or my dad were against me, there would still be someone out there that would believe in me and what I could do. That I would be whoever I wanted to be, and I would manage my goal.
And now, many years later, I’m here. I’m my own person. I’m Trans. I’m Pan. I’m Nova Metstli. I decided my own course, and I’m gonna show what I’m truly made of.

I am beyond thankful of @fayooweh for reminding me of this contest. I had completely forgotten.
My entry for @askbohemiancompany ‘s film festival contest!
I struggled so hard to pick a good scene from a whole handful of movies, but I had to hand it to my favorite scene of Davy Jones from Dead Man’s Chest. I remember being utterly terrified when I was younger the moment he’d appeared on the screen and I just had to pay tribute to it with Marionette as him and Ace as the poor sailor who joined his crew.

((my entry for @askbohemiancompany ‘s contest!! I went ahead and picked Moana for my entry-specifically the I am Moana/Song of Ancestors scene
idk, this movie always stood out to me and I saw it sometime after I graduated highschool, which in itself was weird as my grandmother passed the year prior and I was still pretty unhappy with the fact she didn’t get to see me graduate or anything after that. Seeing the whole mini arc with the grandma gave me the cry I needed when I first saw the movie in theatres, and up until that point I really didn’t find any of the “princess” movies resonate with me on an aesthetic base-but this movie and all the clear water and islands got me to really connect with this movie and it became a comfort thing! Parts of this movie really did influence the aesthetics and general vibe of this blog, so I thought it would be good to pay homage this way c:
I went ahead and put some closeups under the read more so it doesn’t get too long-))

For @askbohemiancompany‘s Sol Film Festival. I did the poster for The Return of the Living Dead! I was always into zombie movies growing up and I saw this one when I was a little too young. So young that I was more scared of the whole premise and what happened without realizing it was also a comedy at first. (Though that was quickly realized) Its not my favorite zombie movie, that goes to Day of the Dead (1985). However this is probably one of the more impactful ones for sure. The genre itself is kinda done to death unfortunately these days but this one will always have a unique take on it. (esp the ending).

My entry for the Sol Film Festival!
Movie: Escape From Tomorrow (2013)
Characters: Hirvi and Sahra
screenshot reference
On why I picked this film:
I don’t claim to be a film buff at ALL. My fiancé minored in film studies, though. He showed me this movie. It’s..... very bizarre. It follows a family taking a vacation at Walt Disney World, that are also going through a lot of hardships and strange events.
I think this movie stood out to me because of the premise... even at the happiest place on earth, you can’t be happy all the time. (As a former college program cast member, this is Truth)
I was trying to pick something that not many people have heard of, too. This was actually filmed in secret at WDW (you can’t film commercial/movie stuff there) and was shot entirely in black and white. It also gets into some of the bizarre Disney theories like Spaceship Earth housing things that are not rides, giant turkey legs actually being emu legs, and so forth.
If you like really strange stuff, check it out. It’s definitely not for everyone but I think the most interesting part is the way it was filmed.

Sol Film Festival Contest post
Hey everyone! Since my previous post got some traction I figured I would go ahead and move ahead with the Sol Film Festival.
What is this you ask? What it is that you take your Pokemon OCs and put them in a scene or movie poster that draws homage to a movie of your choice. I then judge the entries and pick the best of both the writing and the drawn categories and give the winners of each $70.
Here are some ideas for what you can do.
A recreation of an official poster for a film
A recreation of a poster or DVD cover for a rerelease of a film. For example a Criterion Collection or Arrow covers.
A recreation of a single scene from a film. This can be done via a text post or art.

As an example, you can do pieces involving films such as In the Loop, the Original or live action Ghost In the Shell, the Get Smart movie with Steve Carrel, any of the Street Fighter Movies and Final Fantasy Spirited Within are allowed to be homaged as they are self contained films or involve self contained continuity.

Sol Film Festival Winner Time
And the winners are...
@sometimes-its-family for best art piece
@gregnas-the-grouch for best written piece
Congrats to the both of you! Please reach out to me to receive your prizes.
Everyone will be getting their write ups over the next few days. Thank you all again for entering. I had to make some painful choices regarding who won. At the end of each write up I will include 3 film recommendations.
sometimes-its-family
This won due to the sheer amount of effort. I mean fuck, you went and made an animatic for something that I never pressured anyone to do. I asked for a donut and you got me a baker’s dozen. That is a factor for why it had to win in my book.
As for my thoughts on the film, I never got the appeal of Treasure Planet. I know in the broader Disney canon it was not a critically acclaimed film and actually caused Disney in a rough financial bind after its release. Still it has this cult following I do but do not get. I just found most of it unmemorable in my book and the aesthetic of the setting kind of clashed hard with the pirate type story and aesthetics to an extent.
I do not deny the film is visually gorgeous with a bunch of small things; like the intro with the protag’s dad leave, the catlady captain and Captain Silver’s characterization do lead to things I can respect about the film.
Despite that, I could tell this submission was a labor of love like how this film was the director’s passion project that took a decade before it was allowed to be created. Mirroring how this project means a lot to you, which is something I respect. I can relate to having a father figure that you have complex feelings over. It brought to mind the stuff with my own dad and how he shaped me for good and for ill.
I admit I do not know you very well at all, but you made a hell of a first impression. So congrats you earned it.
Also for three films to recommend you I would like to suggest the following
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Bound
Tokyo Godfathers
---
gregnas-the-grouch
I knew the moment you expressed interest in the competition I had a strong feeling you were going to pick this movie. From when we talk on film you have always mentioned this film as a point of favor. Which given your blog with its balance of horror and humor it fits like a glove.
My thoughts on the film is I like Army of Darkness. I saw it as my oldest cousin got me down the rabbit hole of cult horror films. Because of him I found out about stuff such as the Evil Dead trilogy, Mystery Science Theater, Dead Alive/Braindead and Clerks/the View Askew Universe. These films, despite being a mixed bag, were informative in my late teen years and was a key part in expanding my pallet and my sense of humor.
One thing I really liked about your submission is that it kind of encompasses your blog from when I followed you back at early college: sisyphean cosmic/spectral horror with a mix of humor.
One thing I still really look up to you for was when you wanted to hear out some criticisms I had of some of the humor stuff with Whisper. Bunnish served to be a the glue that bound us together so to speak and you actually took it to heart and it put me on your radar which was nuts for me since you were one of the blogs that got me into the scene.
It gave me the fiz seeing Gregnas back in action, even if in a non-canon sense. So congrats you could have chosen to not participate. But you are the king in your own way.
For your three films I recommend
Dead Alive/Braindead
The Ruling Class
In The Mouth’s of Madness
