Part 8
June 22, 20XX
Zuli is working on something just off-camera. There’s a sizzling sound, like a hot pan. Mercury, sitting in the center of the camera’s view, is removing his hand from the camera.
“This smells…weird.”
Mercury looks over.
“Does it? I’ve kinda gotten used to it.”
“It smells like a mix of beef and wet mulch. The beef smell is great, but the mulch smell is equally bad. Net 0 hunger gained. But somehow I still want to eat these less now than I did yesterday.”
Mercury snorts. Zuli straightens up, and turns. In a frying pan are some of the mushrooms. He looks much healthier now, and calmer. …And cleaner. His eyes are brighter, his hair is combed, he’s put on more weight. The mushrooms seem to be doing him good, for better or worse.
“Would you like your gourmet, unseasoned, pan-fried infectious mushrooms, sir?” Zuli has a fake british accent.
“Ah, yes; thank you, chef.”
The pair snickers. “It’s very hot, by the way. Don’t burn yourself.”
“Yes sir.”
Mercury picks up a small mushroom on what appears to be a bamboo skewer. Zuli moves away from the camera, soon returning with his own mushroom skewer.
“Right. So.” Mercury takes a bite. He makes a face, but continues eating. Zuli seems to have to work up the courage to eat his.
“Obsidian is still around, as I thought. He’s locked in his room. It seems like they intentionally tried to fill his room with spores, because there’s more mushrooms and mold growing in there than anywhere else except the kitchen.”
“And the only reason the kitchen is so full is because someone left a bunch of food out,” Zuli says. “Mercury said he hasn’t been in there since everything started, but judging by the looks of it, it had been out for more than just a few days. My guess, given how high-functioning the others are, is that they intentionally left it out for the fungus to grow on, so that any food in there would be unsafe to eat for anyone who wasn’t infected.
“Some of the food in the fridge has small amounts of mold from this fungus growing on them, in addition to your average spoiled food molds and nastiness. It was probably contaminated for a long time, but clearly, it didn’t look it. It was probably an intentionally laid trap.”
Mercury takes another bite of his skewer as Zuli speaks. He finishes it quickly, and throws the stick away.
“Zuli’s got a good instinct for things. I’m extra glad he hasn’t gotten infected.” Zuli looks away.
“A lot of it is just pessimism.”
“Look, if it keeps us safe, I’ll take it.” Mercury pulls a notebook over. “Back to Obsidian for the moment, since we all love talking about that fuckwad-”
Zuli tries not to laugh with food in his mouth. Mercury gives a slight smile.
“He’s way, way worse off than Jade was. I’m not sure if it’s the time, or if they’ve been trying harder to infect him than Jade. It’s been about a week since I’ve seen Jade, so I can’t say for sure. Either way, he’s absolutely covered in the mushrooms, far more than anyone else, and their infections have been getting progressively worse as time goes on. They’ve almost completely covered his eyes, except for one small spot. He seems to be mostly immobile, and he didn’t talk much.”
Zuli finishes his skewer, and discards the stick.
“He barely even reacted when we came in. We almost thought he was dead, but when he heard our voices he looked over.” Zuli shudders. “He didn’t move his head that much, but it sounded like it hurt. He might literally be attached to his bed, now.”
Mercury shakes his head in dismay. “I can only imagine how much pain he’s in. I almost feel bad. It’d probably be a mercy to kill him now, and it sounds like he wouldn’t object.”
“Maybe we should check on Jade at some point?” Zuli suggests. “Might help us get a better idea of how this thing works if we can compare them.”
“I’d like to, but I’m not sure we could,” Mercury says. “His room was almost as ‘guarded’ as Obsidian’s, last time I was there. And they might’ve added extra precautions. It’s been a whole week since I’ve seen him.”
Zuli considers this, folding his arms. “I’d suggest going myself, but I don’t really think either of us should be alone out there if we can help it…Even if it does give you more time to work on the cure.”
“Yeeah…It’s safer to go together. If we really, really have to, we’ll see about…solo missions?”
Mercury looks uncertain, but Zuli gives a small laugh.
“Solo missions. I like it.”
Mercury snorts. It’s clear the company has done a lot for his mood and mental health.
“We might need something to defend ourselves, though. I’m not sure what we could use that wouldn’t need serious decontamination every time we go out with it.”
Zuli scratches his chin. Mercury stares at him for a moment before putting his face in his hands.
“Two weeks, and I never thought about finding a weapon.”
Zuli purses his lips.
“...There’s a joke to be made there about the doctor’s creed. ‘Do no harm.’ You didn’t even think to find a weapon.”
“Shut up.” Zuli laughs. Mercury mutters something unintelligible and reaches forwards.
The video ends.

hi i want you to know that i met one of my very good online friends through your blog a year ago!! i was going through the suggestions in the tags of your initial post and they mentioned a character from a podcast called gospels of the flood and it sounded really cool. so i went and listened to it and it was really good so i dm'd them and now we are besties. match made in tumblr heaven
Wowwie! Happy to hear a story like that. While this blog is far from one of the "big blogs of tumblr" it feels neat to know that (at least at the peak of the blog's popularity) there was a real community.
I hope your friendship is everlasting and brings many smiles!

ok so i just read through chp15 of cml and like. it's an incredible story 10/10 would read again thank u so much for writing it. ++ ive been going through ur CML tumblr tag and i KNOW the ending is supposed to be up to interpretation but you mentioned that your personal headcanon was that hinata survived??? if ur willing to say, what're your personal hcs for the rest of the characters+the ending?? i am SO invested in this story and i would LOVE to hear any extra thoughts u have about it!!!
Wowwie, okay, your excitement has gotten me all fired up now. Thank you so much for giving CML a chance, and I am so happy you enjoyed it!! My headcanons are as follows:
DAICHI’S TEAM
*Kageyama- survived in Awa, eventually evacuated to a safer place, rebuilt his life and wrote a book on their experience during the war. *Suga: Eventually was taken off life support when Daichi realized that there was nothing left of his best friend in the body being ventilated in the bed. He was buried in Awa, outside the house the boys were assigned as a dorm. *Daichi: Beat himself up over the “what if"s of the conclusion to their journey until he decided to take Suga off life support, and got closure for all of his doubts and regrets. At that point, he focused on the boys he could still help, evacuated with them when help came, and is going to show up at the meeting 6 years later. *Oikawa: Never truly recovered his voice, but he can make sounds such as grunts, laughter, etc. He lived in Awa until the evacuation teams rescued them and then moved to a safe place with Iwaizumi, He shows up to the meeting 6 years later. *Iwaizumi: He finds solace in helping Oikawa move on from his trauma because that’s how he deals with his own repressed traumas. He sees himself in Oikawa, and by helping him, also helps himself. He sticks by Oikawa’s side ‘till the end and shows up to the meeting with him. *Kenma: Contributes to life in Awa, although he catches some sort of contagious disease (pneumonia, kidney infection, something not uncommon, but difficult to treat without proper medications. His condition deteriorates over time, with periods of remission and exacerbations, and he fights his infection for several months before he passes away. The goal of this death is to give the boys a death that they were allowed to prepare for. Everyone will have seen Kenma’s death coming, and they will have been ble to spend time with him and prepare both Kenma and themselves for the inevitable. It’ll give them the sense of control that’s been taken from them with both Tanaka (suicide) and Suga (accident), and they need that.*Noya: He becomes one of the rocks in the community of Awa, loved by all the citizens. He taught children, mentored teens, and helped out with work. Through his work with people, he developed his empathy and listening skills, and became an excellenet shoulder to lean on. After the war, he stuck with Daichi, and traveled with him, and wherever he went he quickly established himself as someone that people could trust with their problems. He goes to the meeting 6 years later and is more than overjoyed to see everyone again. *Asahi: As the legacy of their group, he does his absolute best to commit to memory every single adventure they’ve shared, not only during the war, but also before. He picks up artistic skills such as pencil sketching and painting, and is able to sketch out pictures of their lives that are immortalized in his many many sketchbooks. He collaborated with Kageyama to provide sketches for his book, and so stayed with him after everyone evacuated Awa. Throughout his travels, he always did charitable work; volunteered at soup kitchens, with cleanup and rebuilding, playing with orphans, etc. He shows up to the meeting and is so damn proud to be there.
KUROO’S TEAM*Hinata: Will survive the wasteland by learning and adapting to his environment. After extraction from the wasteland, he finds himself in a refugee camp in like… Vietnam, or South Korea, and settles there until the armistice is signed, then returns to Japan to help in the rebuilding effort. *Kuroo: Inevitably survives, no matter how crazy his plans are and no matter how dangerous the situation is. It gives him a reputation that he’s cheated death several times, and that haunts him because he feels like he’s stealing other people’s lives. Survivor’s guilt hits him hard and weighs on him, so after the war, he attempts suicide. Ironically, he fails, and takes it as a sign that he’s doomed to live. He doesn’t show up to the meeting because he’s scared of who he might (or might not) see there. *Akaashi: He learns very quickly to adapt to the wasteland, but an unfortunate encounter with the rogue soldiers causes him a lethal injury. He’s able to regroup and spend some time with his friends, but ultimately passes away. He never tells Bokuto the truth about his parents, and Kuroo respects that decisions by not telling Bokuto either. *Bokuto: Following in Kuroo’s footsteps, he learns to survive the wasteland and fights as hard as he can to help their team complete their trek across the wasteland. His energy is revitalizing for the whole team and he’s a precious memeber. However, Akaashi’s death changes him, and he becomes more reserved , ultimately just following orders quietly and not really taking any pleasure in life. After the war, he gets therapy and is able to come to terms with what happened to him, and he does show up to the meeting to see if he can reconnect with his friends. *Tsukishima: Survives the wasteland, sees some crazy shit and becomes hardened by it, but never truly loses the empathetic streak in him. When Kuroo starts to spiral, he sticks by his side, and stays with him during all the post-war years to rebuild a life at his side. He shows up to the meeting, promising to return to Kuroo afterwards with news, so that Kuroo can feel safe without having to confront anyone. *Yamaguchi: He becomes the most badass motherfucker in the team by learning from the surgeon traveling with them. He specializes in field medicine and trauma, and once the war is over, he moves around with Tsukishima and Kuroo to wherever they go, picking up nursing jobs and helping people with his medical knowledge. As the country begins to rebuild a little more, he settles down in a large university hospital, and works in critical care in a steady position. This distances him from Tsukishima a little bit, but he does stay in contact, and does show up to the meeting to see if everyone he left behind is still well.
I think that’s everyone!! Thanks for the question, I really wrote a lot more than I thought I would at first. Feel free to share your thoughts as well! My thoughts are by no means to be considered "canon” to the fic, cause like I said time and time again- the ending of CML is an ending that only you can imagine.

Let’s see here...
Nickname/s : Rue, Ru, D
Zodiac sign : Scorpio
Height : I’m 5′0″-5′1″ or 160cm
Last thing you googled : Info about Bendy and the Ink Machine
Favorite music artist : I really love Muse! But... if we can include other non-commercial artists... and also include fan artists.. I also love Dorked (they do Inverted Fate AU!) and LucasPucas (works on a lot of Undertale music). I really just think they are the best around.
Songs stuck in my head : Legit, “Forlorn” from Undertale Yellow is stuck in my head. (Did I mention I am obsessed with Undertale fan music?)
Last movie you watched : Teen Titans: The Judas Complex. I actually enjoyed it, though I think the show was better in how it handled Terra and stuff... They had a lot to cover in this film, and I think it could have possibly worked better as a two parter.
What are you wearing right now : A gray dress with short sleeves.
Why did you choose your URL? : I am working on a fanfiction called BitterBlossoms! The universe seemed interesting enough to be its own AU. Thus “Official BitterBlossoms AU” was born.
Do you have a another blog: I did, but I don’t use it anymore. It’s tied to my job as a librarian, so I can’t share it, cause I am still from the internet generation of “keeping my IRL and OL sep.”
What did your last relationship teach you? : Ohh, my last relationship was like... years ago. Like 6+ years ago. I am married now... so let me be like an old woman and say that you shouldn’t date assholes. That is what my last relationship taught me. You’d think it would be an obvious thing, but I think everyone (male, female, or other) has made the mistake of staying with someone who was not right for them. If you have a bad feeling in your gut, evaluate it, and revisit the relationship. If you still feel bad about it, then you need to leave. If your partner (or partners depending) scares you... RUN NOW.
Religious or Spiritual? : I am atheist and areligious (there are some atheistic religions, I was told). I have respect for most beliefs as long as they don’t hurt anyone!
Favorite color? : Blue and purple and gray~~
Average hours of sleep? : LOL............ maybe 6?
Lucky numbers : 3, and all numbers divisible by 3!
Favorite characters? : THE GREAT PAPYRUS (you may not know this from my fanfiction, but I like Papyrus better than Sans LOL), Giroro (omg Peanutable and I have similar tastes XD), literally every character in the main cast of Ouran High School Host Club, Eleanor and Park from... Eleanor & Park (YA book, highly recommend), Cather from Fangirl (YA book, same author as E&P! Both written by Rainbow Rowell), The fake Neil Patrick Harris from Harold and Kumar, and Wally West (every version of him in DC’s animated universe. Not caught up on TV yet, but probably will love him too).
How many blankets do you sleep with? : Sometimes none, but usually at least one or two. Depends on how hot I feel! I run a bit warm...
Dream Job/Career? : I actually worked my dream job for a while, but it was at the wrong library system! I would love to be a Teen Librarian again, but for now, I am happy with what I got... but truth be told... I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL I AM RETIRED!!
So now I gotta tag some peeps? Here you are: @wickedhex, @apdubtalia, @eminiasian
Feel free to do this too! (Or not!)
