"I look fuckin' ridiculous," said Sergio, the tabby dressed in a cowboy outfit. "My short ass could neva even pass as a cowboy."
"And you think I'd pass as a sheriff?" Bonita walked by, dressed in a Western sheriff's costume. The main difference was the golden six-pointed sheriff's badge attached to her chest. Bonita was a lioness who had the same color eyes as Sergio did. She was taller by a few inches and had broader shoulders, but she was about as wiry as he was. She had golden brown fur and two round ears, differing from Sergio's pointy ones.
"I mean, you already a cop, so it works. I don't know how I'm supposed ta feel 'bout you suggestin' I be a cowboy. What, I'm supposed ta be an outlaw? Horse wrangla type shit?"
"If you wanted, we could switch so that you're the cop and I'm the robber."
"What I wanted was ta not be involved in this bullshit-ass Halloween party," he retorted. "Only reason I am is 'cause you payin' me ta go."
"I knew that you'd try to use work as an excuse. But I don't want to see you overwork yourself. I mean, people usually have hobbies. You just...work all day."
"Who gives a shit what I'm doin'? I ain't doin' nothin' that'll get me back into the clink. I ain't hurtin' people. I'm stayin' in my lane."
"Just saying...if your cousin works longer hours as an officer and still finds time to go to parties and hang out with friends, you could probably take some time off, too."
"So, what, you bringin' me ta this party ta flex on ya loner cousin that you got friends and I don't?"
"I'm hoping that you can leave this party with at least a few new friends. And...after what happened in town a few days ago, I just wanted you to be safe."
"You ain't my mom," he said, rolling his eyes. She certainly wasn't his mom, which was why he even gave her the time of day when they first met across the prison glass. That was about nine months ago, but Sergio still had to get used to someone other than Liv actually caring about him.
And perhaps Bonita was right. He was earning money, but it was hard to feel any sort of joy with Liv gone. A couple one night stands felt...all right at the moment, but didn't replace the hollow feeling within his soul. Deep down, Sergio knew that he was merely surviving instead of living, probably had been since his dad died. One night dressed as a cowboy wasn't going to kill him. Perhaps it would have been just the thing he needed to break through his shell.
"But...thanks. I...I'mma try ta enjoy myself." His expression softened as he uncrossed his arms.
"That's all I ask for. And if you don't end up enjoying yourself, you still got 300 dollars."
He scoffed. No argument there.
