January 12, 2024 - Slender-billed Miner (Geositta tenuirostris) Found in the Andes in parts of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, and in a small separate range in central Ecuador, these miners live in grassland, scrub, and cultivated areas, frequently near water. Foraging alone or in pairs, they eat invertebrates, including beetles, caterpillars, spiders, and springtails, picking their prey from the ground and sometimes digging to reach it. They build pad-shaped nests in tunnels from dry grasses and cattle hair where females lay clutches of two eggs. Males perform flight displays while singing.

Our final matchup of Round 1!
The smallest vultures in the world, lesser yellow-headed vultures have wingspans of 1.5–1.65 m (59–65 in) and weights ranging from 0.95 to 1.55 kg (2.1 to 3.4 lb). They are also known as savannah vultures because they live in seasonally wet or flooded lowland grasslands across Central and South America. They locate food by sight or their unusually developed sense of smell, but rely on larger scavengers like king vultures to open tough hides of carcasses. Besides being smaller, they have browner feathers and more orange faces than greater yellow-headed vultures.
Slender-billed vultures live in the savannah of Southeast Asia. They have a wingspan of 1.96–2.58 m (77-101.5 in) and weigh 4-7 kg (9-16 lbs). At carcasses, they are relatively laid back and tolerant. They were once considered conspecific with the Indian vulture. Unfortunately, they are critically endangered due to diclofenac poisoning, a widespread problem known as the Indian Vulture Crisis.

May 19, 2022 - Common Cicadabird or Slender-billed Cicadabird (Edolisoma tenuirostre)
These cicadabirds are found in forests in northern and eastern Australia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and Papua New Guinea. Foraging alone, in pairs, or in small flocks, they eat mostly insects. They build shallow bowl-shaped nests from twigs, grass, stems, leaves, bark, and spiderwebs. Females incubate clutches of one egg and brood the chick alone, though both parents feed it.

A fabulously colorful vulture vs the elegant sister species of the Indian vulture
King vultures live in tropical forests throughout Central and South America. Their wingspans range from 1.2 to 2 m (4–7 ft) and their weights from 2.7-4.5 kg (6–10 lb). These fabulously colorful birds have the strongest beaks of any New World vulture and are often the first scavengers to open a carcass. They are solitary when not nesting and keep their nests very stinky in order to ward off predators. The oldest known king vulture, a female named Vivian, lives in captivity and is 70 years old!
