January 12, 2024 - Slender-billed Miner (Geositta tenuirostris)
Found in the Andes in parts of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina, and in a small separate range in central Ecuador, these miners live in grassland, scrub, and cultivated areas, frequently near water. Foraging alone or in pairs, they eat invertebrates, including beetles, caterpillars, spiders, and springtails, picking their prey from the ground and sometimes digging to reach it. They build pad-shaped nests in tunnels from dry grasses and cattle hair where females lay clutches of two eggs. Males perform flight displays while singing.
